NEP Trio Video and NEP Screenworks Mark Seventh Year of Providing Production Services to Austin City Limits Music Festival

NEP Trio Video and NEP Screenworks Deliver Complete HD Video Solution for Webcasts and On-Site Big-Screen Presentations for World-Renowned Festival, Expanded to Two Weekends This Year

PITTSBURGH — Nov. 5, 2013 — NEP Trio Video has completed its seventh successful year as the exclusive provider of mobile video production facilities and services for the Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival, held Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 11-13 at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. Stretched to two weekends this year for the first time, the ACL Music Festival offered more than 30 hours of live HD video coverage over its two YouTube(TM) channels, all of it captured by NEP Trio Video’s trucks and crew. In addition, NEP Trio Video partnered with its sister organization, NEP Screenworks, to supply content to the ACL Festival Network — a private on-site network that delivered the live video to VIP areas and to large-format on-stage screens and monitors throughout the venue. NEP Trio Video and NEP Screenworks were under contract to festival video producer Springboard Productions and C3 Presents.

NEP Trio Video provided its Tango, Beta, and XL2 mobile units, more than 14 cameras, and engineering support to cover this year’s sold-out ACL Music Festival, which featured more than 125 bands over eight stages and drew more than 70,000 music fans each day. The live two-channel webcast was available at the festival’s YouTube channel and the aclfestival.com website.

In addition, the on-site Festival Network has become a valuable revenue source for C3 Presents, enabling C3 to offer the video feed to sponsors as part of an overall sponsorship package. NEP Trio Video (with support from NEP Screenworks) supplied eight entertainment channels to the ACL Festival Network — four channels of live music from the main stages, two HD webcast channels, and two specialty channels with changeable content.

During CCW 2013, Riedel Communications will feature its new CPX-AVB expansion card for Riedel Artist 1100 series control panels. The CPX-AVB provides the next generation of AVB interfacing for Riedel Artist digital matrix intercom control panels.

The CPX-AVB is a dedicated card that fits in the expansion slot of the Artist 1100 series OLED control panels. The card turns the control panel into an AVB-enabled device, in turn making the panel’s ports available within the entire AVB network. The expansion card converts two Artist ports to the AVB network and vice versa.

Thunder Audio Relies on HARMAN’s JBL Professional VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers for Massive Austin City Limits Music Festival

AUSTIN, Texas – Music festival specialist Thunder Audio added another notch to its list of notable music events in October when the Livonia, Michigan-based company made its debut at the renowned Austin City Limits Music Festival. The event, which for the first time took take place over two weekends (October 4-6 and October 11-13), saw Thunder Audio set up a huge HARMAN JBL VTX line array system, powered by Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

“We know what sound needs to be like for large outdoor music festivals,” assures Thunder Audio Vice President Paul Owen, who spent 23 years mixing monitors for heavy-metal legend Metallica. “We’ve done numerous major ones including the Orion Music + More Festival, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Faster Horses, and you need a powerful system with excellent low-frequency response and clarity that’s also incredibly reliable for long periods of time under sometimes pretty challenging conditions. And it can get pretty hot in Austin! But I have to say, VTX has proven itself to be just that system on previous occasions and it proved itself again at the ACL Music Festival.”

The system consisted of 36 VTX V25 fullsize line array elements flown 18 per side flanking the main stage, with an additional eight V25 cabinets per side for the outside hang. A total of 48 VTX S28 subwoofers were configured as two hangs of 12 each on either side of the stage, with 24 ground-stacked S28 subs across the front of the stage. Four JBL VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements were used for front fill along with a pair of V25 loudspeakers as left-right outside fills. The JBL loudspeakers were controlled using a pair of dbx 4800 system controllers. The entire system was powered by 86 Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers networked and controlled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ system setup software, which enables Thunder Audio to configure and tune an audio system in less time and with better results.

Owen said that in addition to challenging work, large music festivals are also excellent opportunities to viscerally compare the performance and sound of different PA systems in the field. “You can see how different systems handle throw distances, tightness and accuracy of pattern coverage, vertical and horizontal dispersion, and sonic accuracy,” he explained. “The VTX system was at the top of all of those characteristics.”

In particular, Owen said, the VTX’s throw was exceptional and just what was needed in the huge, 351-acre Zilker Park venue for the ACL Music Festival. “The reaction of guest engineers to the VTX has been just spectacular,” he added.

Greg Snyder, Project Manager for Thunder Audio at the ACL Music Festival, noted the performance of the S28 subwoofers was impressive. “The punch from the subs, especially during Muse’s headline set, was monstrous,” he said. “The people there that night got a real treat.”

White Mark Ltd Wins A Major Design Competition

Studio and design consultancy White Mark Ltd has won a major international concept design competition to reconstruct and modernise the recording studios and control rooms at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Poland.

Since 1963, this prestigious university has been headquartered in a five storey building in Warsaw. Originally designed to take into account the requirements of the Sound Engineering department, the building has studios in the basement as well as a concert hall and teaching facilities on the other floors. However, 50 years after its completion, the entire complex now needs significantly updating to bring its functionality in line with current technical and educational requirements.

To ensure that the best team was chosen for the project, the Fryderyk Chopin University held an international competition and encouraged entries from acoustic and architectural companies from around the world. The brief was complex as there were a large number of rooms to take into consideration including two recording studios, an orchestral studio, various editing suites, lecture theatres and a master control room linking all of these facilities together. There was also a requirement to design an Atmos mixing studio, the first of its kind in Poland.

Alan Cundell, Director of White Mark, says: “We approached the competition brief in the same way that we would approach any design brief – with a view to giving the client the best facility possible within the constraints of the budget and the available space. The main issues we faced were optimally configuring the large number of rooms that needed to be included in our submission and ensuring that our technical proposals were both appropriate to the University’s educational requirements and reflected current industry practice. The time frame was very short and we had to pull out all the stops to meet the deadline.”

White Mark’s main competition came from a design consortium consisting of team members from Canada, Poland and Germany. To ensure that the competition was entirely fair, all designs had to be submitted anonymously, identified only by reference numbers, so that no names were visible to the judges.

“The requirement for confidentiality was very stringent,” Alan Cundell adds. “We even had to make sure that everything we sent by FedEx only had reference numbers and no company name, just in case one of the judges saw it.”

Judging was carried out on a percentage basis, with marks allocated in three sections – compliance with guidelines, innovation and feasibility. White Mark’s overall rating was 92% –11% higher than the competition.

The Fryderyk Chopin University is now discussing the on-going project with White Mark as it hopes to start the design and building of its new Sound Engineering department at the beginning of next year.

“Winning the competition was a great achievement and one we are very proud of, but the bigger challenge will come when we start designing for construction,” Alan Cundell adds. “That’s when the hard work really starts!”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional CBT Column Loudspeakers Enable Firetron to Do More with Less at Guy K. Traylor Stadium

NORTHRIDGE, California – Home to the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District High School football team in Rosenberg, Texas, Guy K. Traylor Stadium is a 12,000-seat multipurpose venue. Seeking to upgrade its audio reinforcement system, the district called upon systems integration firm Firetron of Stafford, Texas, to install a unique new system highlighted by HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series column loudspeakers.

The previous system at Guy K. Traylor Stadium consisted of loudspeakers arranged at the end zones of the field—a setup that Richard Phillips, Sales Engineer for Firetron, saw as insufficient for the stadium’s needs. “I strive to bring the loudspeakers as close to the audience as possible to get maximum fidelity,” he said. “The stadium had an end zone system and it only lasted six years. As a general rule, I feel that distributed systems usually work better than end zone systems, so we developed a distributed concept utilizing CBT column loudspeakers.”

Firetron designed and installed a system featuring four JBL CBT 200LA-1 column loudspeakers on each long side of the stadium—four behind the home team stands and four behind the visiting team stands. The system is powered with Crown IT6000 amplifiers with BSS BLU-100 processing. “The wide coverage of the CBT’s enabled us to achieve high-impact sound and even dispersion with relatively few loudspeakers,” Phillips added. “The system is also broken into two discrete parts—one on the home team side and the other on the visiting team side—so each side can operate autonomously.”

At 6.6 feet tall with 32 drivers, the CBT 200LA-1 provides consistent pattern control over a wider bandwidth than is possible with shorter columns or fewer drivers. Vertical pattern coverage is adjustable to either 15 or 30 degrees to match the architectural characteristics of a wide variety of venues, and a variety of mounting heights. In addition, an innovative asymmetrical progressive-gradient coverage mode can be selected, directing more sound toward the far areas of the listening space to help reduce variation in SPL levels from front to back throughout the area.

“It’s the first time I’ve installed the CBT speakers and the project turned out great,” Phillips noted. “The school district is very happy with the quality of the sound and the system is very easy for them to operate.”

Alcorn McBride Helps Tell Story of Choctaw Codetalkers for New Museum Exhibit

The role of the Choctaw Codetalkers has been lost to history until recently, and a new exhibit at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Capitol Museum in Tuskahoma brings their exciting story to light with support from Alcorn McBride’s Digital Video Machine HD DVM8500 video player and Digital Audio Machine AM4 A/E professional digital audio player.

A refurbished gallery in the museum is dedicated to “the original Codetalkers,” members of the Choctaw Nation who served in the 142nd and 143rd Infantry Regiments of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. More than 20 years before the celebrated Navajo Codetalkers of World War II, these soldiers used the Choctaw language to foil the Germans who were intercepting allied communications on the western front in 1918. Discouraged from speaking their native language at home, the Choctaw were credited with helping to ensure an allied victory during the war.

The gallery features a kiosk with a 55-inch screen that displays a 20-minute video about the Codetalkers told through archival imagery and the recollections of their descendants. Push buttons activate the video, and a “field telephone” with buttons enables visitors to listen to Choctaw field commands and an English translation. Alcorn McBride’s DVM8500 operates the video display while the Digital Audio Machine AM4 A/E, with built-in amp, operates the phone.

Ko-Kwow Arts and Exhibits constructed the exhibit and Media Matrix installed all the components for audio and video playback here at the North Bend facilities of Ko-Kwow. The company previously partnered with Alcorn McBride on the permanent exhibition at the Luhr Jensen & Sons Gallery at The History Museum in Hood River, Oregon.

Sound Devices Latest Firmware Adds Additional Inputs to 664 Production Mixer

Unit offers 12 Analog Inputs and 16 Recording Tracks

REEDSBURG, WI, NOVEMBER 5, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, continues its tradition of adding significant features to its products through regular firmware updates. The latest update, Version 2.00 for its flagship 664 Production Mixer, unlocks six additional line-level inputs on this already powerful field mixer. The 664 now offers 12 analog inputs and 16-track recording without requiring the CL-6 Input Controller.

Sound Devices 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, and input trim control. Version 2.0 firmware provides access to six additional, menu-controlled, line-level inputs for a total of 12 inputs. Inputs 7-12 appear on TA3 connectors shared with the direct outputs. Inputs 1 and 6 can be set to accept AES3 or AES42 for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.

With version 2.00, the 664 can record 16 track files, which include all 12 inputs plus its four outputs, without requiring the CL-6 Input Controller. The CL-6 continues to be an important accessory for users requiring hardware fader control of inputs 7 through 12. Firmware revision 2.00 also brings additional LCD metering modes to support the expanded input capability. Three menu-set metering modes are selectable from the front panel meter button. Meter modes offer combinations of input and output levels.

The 664 records 16-track monophonic or polyphonic broadcast WAV files or stereo MP3 files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All inputs and outputs are individually selectable for recording, and feature up to three seconds of record pre-roll. With its dual card slots, the 664 can record content to either or both cards simultaneously, with the ability to assign different tracks to each memory card. With cards not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD display when starting a recording. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32.

The 664 offers greater flexibility and ease-of-use with its “LCD Daylight Display” mode, which incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme and solid-bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. In addition, it includes a high-precision, Ambient-based timecode generator/reader for multi-camera and double-system sound applications.
