HARMAN’s JBL Professional, Crown, and Soundcraft Provide Versatile Audio Solution for Rhema Bible Church

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The popular Rhema Bible Church in Randburg, Northwest Johannesburg, is a house of worship dedicated to learning and growing. With a seating capacity of 7,500, the Rhema Bible Church was in need of an upgrade to its sound reinforcement system for its large 180-degree bowl-shaped auditorium. Senior Pastor Ray McCauley turned to audio consultants SoundGP and HARMAN Professional South African distributor, Wild & Marr (Pty) Ltd., who provided an integrated audio infrastructure and broadcast/production facility consisting of HARMAN’s JBL Professional, Crown, and Soundcraft components.

The audio system had to support the multi-functional needs of Sunday morning services, with spoken word being the top priority. In addition, it needed to deliver high-end concert performance over the substantial audience noise levels generated in the large auditorium, while providing the necessary capability for international touring artists, without the need for additional equipment.

“The previous system was unable to cope with the new high-energy content being generated in many forms — from live music to AV,” stated Pastor Alan Plant, who heads logistics for Sunday services. “Due to its age, the speech coverage was uneven and not up to the level of consistency required to ensure a pleasant listening environment.”

Wild and Marr chose JBL’s VTX line array system powered by Crown’s flagship I-Tech 12000 HD power amplifiers. The system is controlled by the latest version of JBL HiQnet Performance ManagerTM software. The system needed to be transformed into one that communicated to a fast-growing, youth-focused audience. “This market consumes media in a different way with expectations of seamless integration of varying media streams from acoustic rock to low-end electronica bass tracks to multimedia streaming,” explained Gustav Teitge, Wild & Marr Systems Engineer.

To fulfill the church’s requirements, Wild and Marr outfitted the auditorium with four arrays of six JBL VTX V25 loudspeakers and two JBL VERTEC® VT4886 subcompact enclosures per array acting as down fills. The system also includes three JBL VTX S28 subwoofers per side in a cardioid array. Eight JBL STX815M loudspeakers were also used to provide delays to the rear seating area.

By using a specially designed MADI routing solution, the church now has expanded routing flexibility and is capable of future expansion. This is a first-of-its-kind solution in such an environment, enabling the sound operators to mix 96 channels from the Soundcraft Vi6 stage box mic pre-amplifiers. Sixty-four of these channels are made available to the monitor Soundcraft Vi1 or the Soundcraft Vi1 in the broadcast/production facility as well as the permanent recording PC, which also doubles as a virtual sound check playback device.

The Soundcraft Aviom expansion card provides flexibility of routing to any console bus feed. This digital signal backbone also provides adequate tie lines for signal interconnection between the various consoles while passing AES/EBU signal to the main PA via the MADI router. An analogue signal routing system provides redundancy from the main PA ensuring reliable signal transport to the Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

Gustav Teitge adds that the system performance objectives had been clearly met by installing JBL VTX. “The new technology incorporated into the D2 driver, as well as other innovations, like decreased component gaps and structural changes, make seamless audio interconnectivity when moving around the auditorium a priority — thus lending itself to extremely smooth and accurate audio distribution.”

SoundGP owner, Cristo Hattingh, was responsible for the voicing of the system. In addition, challenges faced and overcome along the way included restricted height due to the funnel shape of the space’s profile (incline floor,

decline roof towards the rear) creating unique standing waves in the low-mids and making it very challenging to achieve an even low-end distribution.

The implementation of a collaborative HARMAN product line was the first of its kind in Africa using this type of technology. “Utilizing the new VTX loudspeaker system all the way down to a MADI integrated Soundcraft fiber signal distribution and control backbone provided an innovative and successful solution to the many challenges the Rhema Bible Church presented,” concluded the design team.

SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition Drives Progress Toward Next-Gen Images and Audio

SMPTE Event Enjoys Record Attendance as Experts Examine Transformative Technologies Including 4K/UHD and Beyond

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Oct. 31, 2013 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced that the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition concluded successfully on Oct. 24 with record attendance following a series of presentations, debates, panel discussions, and technology exhibitions that demonstrated why this has become the premier annual event for motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, and the allied arts and sciences.

“UHDTV drove much of the conversation this year, and we saw creative approaches and innovative thinking everywhere, from the preconference technical symposium and 4K/UHDTV demo area through three days of presentations and the conclusion at our honors and awards ceremony,” said SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange. “Key players in the worldwide media and entertainment industry came together to discuss state-of-the-art technologies and techniques for working with moving images, often breaking new ground in the journey toward even better consumer experiences with media.”

More than 2,000 people attended the technical conference and exhibition, which drew world-renowned technology thought leaders from motion picture studios, broadcast and distribution networks, production and postproduction communities, software companies, systems integrators, manufacturers, distribution providers, over-the-top providers, and others leading the evolving motion-imaging industry.

The preconference SMPTE 2013 Symposium, held Oct. 21 and titled “Next-Generation Imaging Formats: More, Faster, and Better Pixels,” featured technical and business tracks, as well as a first-of-its-kind demo room, all focused on the next generation of image formats. The day-long event addressed higher frame rates, wider color gamut, and increased dynamic range along with 4K (UHD-1) and 8K (UHD-2) resolutions.

The conference and exhibition itself launched with a keynote by Thomas Gewecke, chief digital officer and executive vice president for strategy and business development at Warner Bros. Entertainment. He stressed that industry members have an opportunity to redesign what entertainment experiences will be and thus must act to drive innovation.

Building on this imperative, conference sessions covered topics ranging from the cloud and immersive audio standards to image processing and multiview production. With respect to the latter, Disney’s Howard Lukk described a new “hybrid 3D” approach that uses a prototype trifocal camera system, and ARRI’s Johannes Steurer presented a “motion scene camera” that incorporates a time-of-flight sensor to generate depth information.

NHK’s Hiroshi Shimamoto reported on development of a 120 fps 8K 12 bit CMOS image sensor that the broadcaster recently built into an 8K compact camera. During his presentation on lens considerations for digital cinematography, Larry Thorpe of Canon treated attendees to a preview of “The Human Voice,” a 30-minute short shot with the Canon C500 camera in 2K 12 bit, using Cooke S4/i Prime lenses and Canon zooms.

Complementing these presentations and sessions, the sold-out exhibition hall featured displays and demonstrations from leading technology and solution providers. While Cisco(R) hosted a display showing imagery using its 4K HEVC compression in 6 Mbps (1000:1 compression of the original file) in 4:2:0 color depth, Fusion-io showed playback of 4K uncompressed imagery at 120 fps on a Sony(R) 84-inch 4K display from an HP(R) Z820 workstation equipped with four Fusion-io ioFX cards with 1.6 TB capacity.

On the final night, 2012 SMPTE Progress Medal recipient David Wood served as master of ceremonies for the annual awards ceremony, bestowing this year’s Progress Medal honor on NHK’s Keiichi Kubota. The society celebrated numerous other luminaries with awards recognizing their unique contributions to the industry, and 14 SMPTE members were raised to prestigious Fellow status. The evening concluded with the second annual SMPTE Jam, which featured the “Resolution Blues,” written by SMPTE Governor Richard Welsh.

Sound Image Tops Off Brad Paisley’s Tour With HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers

NORTHRIDGE, California – Country music star Brad Paisley is currently in the final leg of his 2013 “Beat This Summer Tour” throughout the United States and Canada. To support Paisley’s exceptional voice and talents, Sound Image of Escondido, California, is providing HARMAN’s JBL VTX line arrays and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

A total of 44 VTX V25 fullsize line array elements comprise the system on Paisley’s tour, along with 16 VTX S28 subwoofers, all powered by 40 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers. “When I first heard the VTX system, I was shockingly impressed. I was amazed by the sound quality when we first fired it up,” according to Greg Hancock, Audio Crew Chief for the tour.

“There were specific sounds that Brad was looking for because he plays in a distinctive style. We were able to accommodate that, because with its high-frequency range, the VTX offers a lot more detail than our previous systems,” said Brendan Hines, FOH Systems Engineer.

Sound quality is not the only area where VTX exceeds expectations. It also enables extremely quick setup times, as VTX’s patented S.A.F.E. suspension system is streamlined for speed and efficiency with improved hardware for faster setup with fewer pinning operations and greater security.

“The flexibility and ease with which the VTX is set up benefits us in terms of completing the necessary system configurations to control feedback,” Hines added. “Having that much control over the feedback of those PA’s makes it much easier for tuning.”

The state-of-the-art performance of the VTX PA’s is further enhanced by the Crown I- Tech HD amplifiers, the pinnacle of advanced professional touring amplifier technology.

“The Crown I-Tech HD’s are a huge improvement, their reliability is outstanding, the sound quality is phenomenal, and the flexibility it gives you as a systems engineer is awesome,” said Hines. “We’ve taken another step in the right direction,” said Kevin Freeman, Production Manager.

CTS Audio Continues Tradition of Success With HARMAN’s JBL Professional VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers

NORTHRIDGE, California – Longtime HARMAN Professional customer and prominent live sound company CTS Audio of Brentwood, Tennessee recently added JBL VTX line arrays and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers to its inventory to accommodate the needs of recent large-scale events. CTS Audio recently put its new VTX/I-Tech HD system to the test at the Delta Country Jam in Tunica, Mississippi and the Dove Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.

CTS Audio has seen its business grow in recent years, both in the frequency of projects as well as size. Eventually, the scale of the projects necessitated an addition to CTS’ inventory of audio equipment. “We started working enough large-scale events where it made sense to buy a large system instead of continuing to rent them,” said Mike Taylor, Vice President of CTS Audio.

So when the time came to add large-scale components, CTS Audio stuck with its winning formula. “We’re very committed to HARMAN,” Taylor said. “We’re deep into their line of products and are very happy with every HARMAN product we own, plus their customer service is second to none.”

CTS Audio first put its new products to the test at the 2-day Delta Country Jam, which took place outside the Hollywood Casino in Tunica and drew 15-20,000 fans each day. Performers included Billy Currington, Thompson Square, Randy Houser, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert and Kellie Pickler.

The system at the Delta Country Jam featured 24 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array elements (12 per side), supplemented with 24 VTX S28 arrayable subwoofers with 12 VERTEC® VT4886 subcompact line array elements for front fills and 12 VT4888 midsize line array elements for out fills (six per side). Crown I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers powered the system, which was managed with JBL HiQnet Performance ManagerTM software.

“The HARMAN system performed extremely well at the Delta Country Jam,” Taylor noted. “We worked with Drew Dedo of Harbor Entertainment, who produced the Delta Country Jam, and the collaboration with Drew, plus the addition of the new HARMAN gear, made the event a tremendous success.”

A couple weeks later, CTS serviced the Dove Awards, which took place at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena in Nashville with hosts Amy Grant (who also performed) and Kirk Franklin, with performances by Bart Millard, Andy Mineo, For King and Country, Newsboys, Toby Mac, Michael W. Smith and more.

The system at the Dove Awards featured 18 V25 fullsize line array elements (nine per side) with 16 S28 subwoofers (eight per side), along with 20 VT4888 line array elements for side fill and six VT4886 line array elements as a flown center cluster for front fill. Crown I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers powered the system, which was managed with JBL HiQnet Performance ManagerTM software.

“The VTX system has been very well received,” Taylor said. “It’s the first time we’ve owned a loudspeaker of the V25’s size and although we were initially concerned with running out of headroom, that has not been a problem at all. We’re finding a very present sound at the 300-foot range.”
