Mama Mia! Yamaha CL5 Fits the Bill for ABBA MANIA

BUENA PARK, Calif.—ABBA MANIA, formed in 1999 as the world’s number one touring ABBA tribute production, is promoted by Handshake Group of Manchester, England. The U.S. leg of the tour that began in Elkhart, Indiana and ends in Sedona, Arizona has Clearwing Productions (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to thank for handling audio production. The company provided a Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console with two Rio 3224-D input/output boxes for front of house mixing duties by Trevor Powers of Clearwing.

“The advantage of having the Yamaha CL5 in conjunction with two Rio i/o racks is the ultimate flexibility when interfacing with house PA’s, states Powers. Do you need AES? No problem. Do you need four outputs for your subs? No problem. The list can go on and on.” Powers said that by splitting up the Rio racks, he has eliminated the use of ANY sub-snakes on stage, which makes for a very clean looking stage. “Also, by not having long runs of mic cables before the mic pre’s, I have virtually eliminated any buzzes or hum.”

With regard to the CL’s Premium Rack, Powers is using the Rupert Neve Portico 5043 as a bass compressor and the U76 to compress/level the female leads. “I have been quite impressed with the sound quality of the CL as well as the flexibility the console offers.”

HARMAN’s Martin M6 Lighting Console Brightens Hong Kong’s China Day Celebration

AARHUS, Denmark — The National Day of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is celebrated every year to commemorate the founding of the world’s most populous sovereign state. The holiday is observed throughout Mainland China, as well as the nation’s Special Administrative Regions of Macao and Hong Kong with a variety of government-organized events including fireworks and concerts. Recently, the organizing Committee of Compatriots in Hong Kong presented a cultural show at the Hong Kong Coliseum for this year’s 64th Anniversary of the founding of the PRC. To ensure a lighting display worthy of the national holiday, the Committee turned to Tom Lee Engineering Ltd., who deployed several HARMAN Martin Professional’s lighting fixtures, controlled by Martin’s M6 lighting console.

The event featured performances by the Military Band of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, the Art Troupe of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, the Honor Guard of Army, Navy and Air Force of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Children and Juvenile Chinese Opera Troupe, as well as many popular local singers and bands. More than 6,000 people from the Hong Kong region joined in celebrating the founding of the PRC.

The main event stage featured 24 Martin MAC Viper Profiles and 24 MAC Viper Wash DX moving head fixtures with 1,000-watt lamps and a unique compact form to produce impressive speed and superior light quality. In addition, a Martin M6 lighting console, which operates on the M-series software platform for fast programming and extensive playback management, controlled the design.

“With the M6, programming was fast and easy. I was able to customize the console and show to meet my exact needs with its touch screens,” commented the FOH engineer from Tom Lee Engineering Ltd. “I was very comfortable relying on the M6 to control the main stage design and it proved to be an invaluable asset to the success of the China Day celebrations. Also, due to the rigorous environment and continuous operation, we relied heavily on the reliability and robust design of the Martin equipment that presented us with zero downtime.”

Christie Lights up “A New York Holiday” at Barneys New York

The “Empire State” meets state-of-the-art display technology from Christie® for a spectacular, fully immersive visitor experience this holiday season at the Barneys New York flagship store in Manhattan. Barneys and Christie have partnered again to bring back the traditional family shopping experience in a “bricks and mortar” setting, creating magical windows and an in-store gallery through the use of visual technologies. Inspired by music icon and native New Yorker Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, visual artist Joanie Lemercier and Barneys’ creative director Dennis Freedman, “A New York Holiday” is a series of unique windows facing Madison Avenue and an interactive in-store gallery brought to life by the latest generation of Christie digital display technologies. “A New York Holiday” experience is the ultimate demonstration of what happens when creative retail merchandising meets Christie displays and the company’s Managed Services’ solutions and technical ingenuity.

“A New York Holiday” will premiere November 20th, benefiting the Shawn Carter Foundation, a New York-based charity which awards post-secondary scholarships to students facing socio-economic hardships. Working with artist Joanie Lemercier and Mr. Carter, Barneys will utilize a wide range of Christie display technology, including projectors, Christie® MicroTiles® and Christie HD flat panel monitors, to create dazzling, multimedia events that completely envelop the customers in one-of-a-kind interactive experiences.

“Barneys New York had an overwhelmingly positive response from customers and designers last year to our holiday windows, which have become known for their innovative use of immersive and interactive narrative with cutting-edge technology that leads people into our store,” said Dennis Freedman, Barneys New York creative director. “Last year, Christie was instrumental in the success of our holiday display. With a musical, fashion and business innovator like Mr. Carter, we were confident that Christie’s superior technology and the expertise of its Managed Services team could help us bring his vision to light, not just to our store in Manhattan, but also to select flagship locations in other major cities.”

Tommy Dobrzynski, vice president of visuals at Barneys New York, added, “Everything that encompasses ‘A New York Holiday’ – the items chosen, the amazing designers that participated, the windows, the design of the BNY SCC Gallery, the Christie technology and their team’s unique ability to help us leverage technology to achieve our creative vision – represents a perfect example of groundbreaking collaboration that I hope will WOW customers and passersby.”

The third floor of the retailers’ Madison Avenue Flagship has been transformed into the BNY SCC Gallery, an immersive 1,200-square-foot space with a seamless 360-degree projection that utilizes projection mapping, exclusive content, lights, and movement, to transport customers into the world of New York. A 70-foot long “hall” with floor projection will guide visitors from the 3rd floor elevator to the Gallery. The BNY SCC Gallery Space will showcase limited edition products designed by Mr. Carter in collaboration with various designers which will be available for purchase.

MADISON AVENUE WINDOWS

Floating City
The retailer’s iconic Madison Avenue windows will mesmerize passersby and customers with moving content that demonstrates how light and shadow are experienced in New York City, incorporating the theme colors of black, white and gold. Among the highlights are a “floating city” projected upon a 16-foot-tall “rock” wall, which houses the viewing area for the projection mapped experience, and includes twinkling stars in a night sky and a slow-moving sunrise revealing the shimmering floating city – enhanced by a visual program that incorporates architectural language, changing geographical landscapes and climate (snow, rain) – all through dazzling 3D mapping technology.

Mirrors, Icicles and 3D lights
A large, abstract hanging resembling a rock or icicle formation will be covered in thousands of fragmented mirrors. With Christie projection mapping washing light over the formation to create a light show on the object itself, it will be reflected into the room as well as onto the window and finally the street.

Among the technologies used will be the Christie HD14K-M projector, Christie LW720, Christie LWU420, and Christie HD flat panel displays, including the new Christie WeatherAll flat panel.

A traditional favorite during the holidays will have a modern new twist, with a window housing the “BNY NYC Sleigh Ride” featuring a rotating cast of improvisational performers from Upright Citizens Brigade outfitted in modern Santa costumes who will take children on a virtual “sleigh ride” through an abstracted New York City. Through the use of experiential screens, the occupants will feel like they are up in the air and flying through New York. Christie WeatherAll flat panels on the outside of the window will show images of the children and “Santa” as they take the Sleigh Ride.

“New York is home to some of the most technologically sophisticated customers in the world, and the holidays are an especially competitive time for retailers to capture their attention and bring them into their stores,” noted Sean James, vice president of Christie’s Managed Services. “We are pleased to again be part of Barneys New York’s holiday display campaign, both in New York and other flagship locations across the country. Through visual technology and collaboration, Christie helped bring the creative vision to life.”

Christie display technologies will be featured in select Barneys regional flagship locations in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, where Christie HD flat panels will greet visitors and provide content to highlight the Shawn “JAY Z” Carter collection within that store.

“Barneys is demonstrating the possibility of taking a creative merchandising concept, marrying it with advanced visual technologies and deploying it on a varying scale in regional stores across the country,” added Sean James, “We were happy to work with the creative team to find solutions that would work in each of their five locations, from the larger Manhattan flagship store, to the smaller locations.”

Christie Facebook contest
To get everyone into the holiday spirit, one lucky Christie Facebook follower will have the opportunity to win a $1,000 Barneys gift card (redeemable online or in-store), courtesy of Christie and Barneys. Visit Christie’s Facebook page November 29-January 3, 2014 for details.

HARMAN’s Martin MAC Viper Profile Series Lights Up Les Francofolies Music Festival

AARHUS, Denmark — The annual Les Francofolies summer music festival, held in Spa, Belgium, promotes francophone music and attracts hundreds of thousands of fans over a five-day span. ARTO, a Brussels-based production company, handled the festival’s production and lighting design, which consisted exclusively of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures. As an integral part of the system ARTO deployed 28 Martin MAC Viper Profile moving head fixtures, in addition to several other Martin luminaires.

The MAC Viper Profile is a high-output profile luminaire that boasts superior light quality, an exceptional feature set and a highly optical system. With its 1000-watt HID source, the Viper consumes less power, making it over 50% more efficient than its 1200-watt rivals. Not only is the Viper Profile brighter, but it is also a faster and more compact solution. Housed in a slender and agile body, the Viper’s responsiveness and fast pan/tilt speeds have led it to become a favorite among designers.

“I chose to work with the MAC Viper Profiles for many reasons,” stated Lighting Designer Gilles Mathieu. “The colors are very nice. The red especially is a real primary red. The speed and range of the zoom is excellent and it only draws five amps of power. Logistically speaking the Vipers were really simple to hang and we were also able to place them on the floor when necessary.”

In addition, the main stage design also included 26 MAC 2000 XB Wash lights, 24 MAC Aura LED moving heads, and 8 Atomic 3000 strobe light fixtures. The MAC 2000 Wash lights offered a combination of power and color mixing, that Mathieu discussed, would not have been possible with other fixtures. The multi-function and zoom capabilities of the MAC Auras, paired with the robust color and unique power savings, were a huge asset to the live show especially during the daylight.

Martin equipment (main stage):
28 x MAC Viper
26 x MAC 2000 Wash XB
24 x MAC Aura
8 x Atomic 3000

Brian Pannier Goes Wild for HARMAN Studer Vista 1 Digital Audio Console

NEW YORK, New York — For more than 30 years, veteran audio engineer Brian Pannier has mixed sound for countless television programs including sports broadcasts, talk shows, soap operas and more. Most recently, Pannier has been mixing the audio for “Crowd Goes Wild” on FOX Sports 1, where he is using a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 digital audio console.

“Crowd Goes Wild” is a live sports entertainment talk show hosted by Regis Philbin with panelists Georgie Thompson, Michael Kosta, Trevor Pryce, Jason Gay and Katie Nolan, where the group discusses the biggest stories in sports, entertainment and more. “We have six to eight people talking at one time and it’s filmed with a live studio audience, so it’s a fast-paced and very lively show,” Pannier said.

“Crowd Goes Wild” began airing in mid-August and is filmed at a film stage at Pier 60 in New York City. With so many live microphones during tapings, Pannier is tasked with handling a multitude of audio sources. “The audio console needs to be able to accommodate that variety, which the Vista 1 does quite well,” Pannier said. “It’s a small desk but is being used to its complete and full capacity, and it’s performing great.”

While this project marks Pannier’s first experience with a Studer digital audio console, he found the learning curve with the Vista 1 to be minimal, thanks to intuitive features including the Vistonics™ interface and FaderGlow™. “The Vista 1 has proven to be very user-friendly, intuitively laid out and much easier to operate than a lot of digital consoles out there,” he said. “Just as importantly, the sound quality is top-notch.”

In addition, Studer’s commitment to customer service has paid off in spades. “The relationship I’ve developed with Studer has been great,” Pannier noted. “They’ve been able to give me quick feedback and that’s way above and beyond what I expect as a rental customer.”

Last but not least, the portability of the Vista 1 enables Pannier to transport and configure the console in any space imaginable. “Being able to pick up and move the Vista 1 is incredible and the entire console including the power supply is self-contained,” he said. “I consider this console to be a breakthrough.”

The Hills Come Alive with Antelope Audio and “The Earth Harp”

Artist and Instrument Craftsman William Close Turns to Antelope to Capture Unique and Unprecedented Recording, Using Natural Valley as the Instrument’s Resonating Chamber

Santa Monica, CA, November 20, 2013 – Ever since his art school days in the late 1990′s while attending the prestigious Chicago Art Institute, William Close pursued his dream of building and performing with unique, handmade instruments whose sounds have never been heard anywhere in the world. Now, The Earth Harp, his masterpiece instrument creation of unprecedented physical scale and sonic beauty, has been captured in astonishing fidelity in a brand new recording — thanks to the digital clocking and conversion technology of Antelope Audio.

His new album with The Earth Harp Collective, Behind the Veil, captures the authentic sound of this spectacular instrument — from its lavish root notes to its rich harmonics and heavenly overtones. Close attributes the success of the recording in large part to Antelope Audio’s new Rubicon A to D converter, which was used as the primary mastering device, and its Orion32 multi-channel interface, which was used during playback. “I’ve never heard The Earth Harp sounding so good on a recording,” he says. “The instrument has so many beautiful harmonics and overtones, and many times these are lost in the process. The Antelope equipment was awesome and helped us finally achieve a true representation of how The Earth Harp actually sounds.”

Marcel James, mastering engineer and Director of Sales and Marketing for Antelope Audio (USA), mastered the project. Interestingly, he was not familiar with The Earth Harp when he first heard the final mixes. When he stumbled on a video of Close’s performance on America’s Got Talent, he got chills: “When I saw his video on America’s Got Talent, suddenly it all made sense,” he recalls. “From that point on, the project took on a new meaning. Here was a relatively new artist, a new instrument and a special new piece of equipment from Antelope that had an A to D converter and a built-in atomic clock.”

While James used Antelope gear throughout the entire process, the starting point was the Orion32, which was clocked to a 10M. Despite using only two channels for playback, he considers the Orion32 a very capable playback converter for mastering: “The sound of the Orion is very neutral, but also very musical,” he says. “I use very high end EQs during the mastering process, and if you start EQing with an inferior sounding device, all you are doing is adding problems.”

After playback, James routed the signal to his Sontec mastering EQs for dynamics processing before sending it via USB to an Antelope Audio Rubicon, which was running Logic X off of a second MacBook Pro as the ‘final recording device.’ “I had just gotten the Antelope Rubicon, so I thought I would try its A to D capability on this project,” he recalls. “The sound of The Earth Harp suddenly had this larger than life sound that really lent itself well to the material.”

For monitoring, his D to A conversion was handled by an Antelope Zodiac +, which was also being clocked to the 10M. “I had the best clocking feeding the most neutral, transparent D to A converter,” he says. For loudspeakers, he used ATC 150 monitors in conjunction with an ATC sub. Finally, he used an Antelope Eclipse 384 as a monitor control. “The Eclipse384 is extremely viable as a monitor management tool,” he explains. “First, it has a very high quality headphone output as well as a sub management system built-in. Second, its preset capability allows instantly recall the original mix, the ‘post-analog’ stage where I introduce the EQ, and after the Zodiac + — the very end of the chain. It gives me a very clear picture.”

In the final mastering phase, James printed audio files for the CD at 44.1, but also made 96 kHz, 24-bit masters, which he wants to help Close make commercially available. Given the unique audiophile nature of the recording, he also ran a pass of 96/24 audio with no limiting and had vinyl records cut on a mastering lathe.

About Antelope Audio

Antelope Audio is the brainchild of Igor Levin who has more than 20 years’ experience and a number of innovations in digital audio and synchronization technology. The company is widely acknowledged as the leading manufacturer of audio master clocks.

In 2009 Antelope Audio launched its product line of high-resolution USB D/A converters, being among the pioneers designing a 384 kHz DAC. Antelope’s DACs employ their renowned 64-bit clocking and jitter management technologies and custom-designed circuits, achieving unprecedented precision and sound clarity.

Zylight to Show New F8 LED Fresnel at GV Expo

LOS ANGELES – Zylight, a leading manufacturer of innovative LED lighting solutions, will demonstrate its new F8 LED Fresnel at Government Video Expo 2013, which runs Dec. 4-5 in Washington, D.C. (Booth 838). While the F8 draws only 100 watts, it has close to the light output of a traditional 1000-watt Fresnel. Plus, it collapses to less than four inches thick for easy transport and storage.

“The F8 LED Fresnel is a great choice for government agencies that need to update their studio lighting grids, because it is much more energy efficient than traditional Fresnels and generates almost no heat,” said Charlie Collias, senior vice president, worldwide sales. “It’s also a great light on location because it’s water resistant, easy to transport, and you can plug it in or power it with a camera battery.”

Available in tungsten (3200K) or daylight (5600K) versions, the fully dimmable F8 maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping. Equipped with an eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens, it features a patented focusing system for spot and flood operations. With a CRI (color rendering index) of 97 or better, its beam spread is adjustable between 16-70 degrees for even coverage for widescreen productions.

Like other Zylight models, the F8 is equipped with ZyLink wireless technology, which makes it easy to link multiple Zylights for simultaneous remote control. The F8 ships with barn doors and yoke mount, but additional accessories are available separately.

Zylight will also demonstrate its IS3c LED light, an updated version of its acclaimed IS3 large panel cyclorama and beauty light, at GV Expo. Now shipping with a custom soft box produced exclusively by Chimera, the fully dimmable IS3c is a wide, high-output soft light with built-in controls for adjusting color temperature, color correction, and Zylight’s Color Mode, which produces millions of colors without gels or filters.
