ASHLY EXPANDS nX AMPLIFIER LINE

WEBSTER, NEW YORK – DECEMBER 2013: Ashly’s nX family of two- and four-channel power amplifiers has been expanded with the addition of twelve new 800 Watt and 400 Watt models. These medium output amplifiers are the perfect complement to the high-output 3,000W and 1,500W nX models.

All nX Series amplifiers feature Ashly’s programmable outputs on each individual channel using rear panel DIP switches to select Low-Z (down to 2 Ohms), or High-Z, (70V or 100V) constant-voltage outputs.

The nX8004 has four channels rated at 800 watts per channel across all programmable outputs. The nX8002 is the two-channel version. The nX4004 offers four channels at 400 watts per channel, while the nX4002 is the two-channel model.

Ashly offers three nX amplifier feature sets. The nX Series is the base level amplifier with Ashly’s Energy Management System (Ashly EMS™), a defeatable sleep mode that draws <1 Watt of current when engaged. The nX Series also has an optional security lockout feature for the front panel controls. The nXe Series Net-Work-Able amplifiers feature an Ethernet connection providing the integrator with remote control and diagnostics, a programmable sleep or stand-by mode, AUX outputs and an internal Real-Time Clock with Event Scheduler. The nXp Series adds the Protea™ DSP Processor with 32-bit SHARC processors and full Protea DSP that includes Precision Impedance Monitoring on each channel output.

BLACKBIRD STUDIO CHOOSES API 1608 FOR ITS NEWLY CREATED BLACKBIRD ACADEMY

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – DECEMBER 2013: An API 1608 analog console will serve aspiring sound engineers at the newly created Blackbird Academy recording school in Nashville, Tennessee. The school is based at the prestigious Blackbird Studio and will draw on their history, expertise, and industry connections to offer three educational curricula, totaling over 720 hours of horizon-expanding coursework. Class sizes will be small and will feature extensive hands-on lab time, including time in two of Blackbird’s eight recording studios, now reserved exclusively for educational use. The classroom space was created by interior designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz of the HGTV television show, Home by Novogratz.

“We chose the API 1608 for a number of reasons,” said John McBride, who is co-owner and co-operator of Blackbird Studio with his wife, country superstar Martina McBride. “The 1608 is easy to use, it has a great sound, and it’s an excellent tool to teach students signal flow. We already have a couple of 1608s at Blackbird, and we’re very happy with them. Moving forward with the Academy, we wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Mark Rubel and Kevin Becka are co-directing Blackbird Academy, which began with a three-day summer camp designed for high school students. The Academy’s debut Studio Engineering Program kicked off on September 30, 2013 and will run for about 24 weeks.

Premiere Southern California Live Music Venue Steps it Up with VARIA

Long Beach, CA – December 2013…The Gaslamp is one of Southern California’s best-known night spots, with a rich history of great entertainment and an impressively eclectic roster. On any given night, the club’s stage plays host to artists ranging from hard rock and metal to punk, acoustic, and even contemporary classical performances, as well as comedy, DJs, tribute acts, karaoke, and even televised sporting events.

The Gaslamp offers up a full kitchen, with private booths and tables as well as a bar and dance floor, making it a great place for dinner, drinks, and a night out. But as owner Mike Newfeld explains, the club’s acoustics have long been a struggle.

“It’s a very boomy room,” says Newfeld. “It’s got high ceilings, concrete floors, and just not very good sound dispersion — a lot of pockets that are dead space or too loud. The challenge has been to find a system that would deliver consistent coverage and sound good, no matter where you are in the room.”

Engineer Tony Purvis agrees. “It was really, really hard to get a good mix throughout the whole club — to achieve that ‘comfortable loud,’ where everyone can enjoy themselves, enjoy the music and the performance but still be able to hold a conversation.”

The Gaslamp recently upgraded their sound system, installing the new VARIA modular point source line array system from Renkus-Heinz. As Purvis observes, the VARIA system has completely changed the equation for the club.

“The experience that I’ve had with the new VARIA system has been just amazing,” Purvis remarks. “The design of the system has enabled complete coverage. This system makes my life easier.”

360 degree immersive driving simulator upgrade delivers detail, color and lifetime illumination

If you’ve travelled a roadway in the United States, you’ve likely benefitted from the work accomplished at the University of Iowa’s National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) facility. Known worldwide for creating custom simulated driving environments for public and private organizations, the NADS facility offers a premier destination for driving data collection. In order to extend their reputation as a future-focused solutions provider, the facility is in the midst of a major video upgrade in their NADS-1 immersive driving simulator. The full system upgrade will be completed, to the relief of the NADS team, by the end of January, 2014, as the facility has, per Omar Ahmad, director of operations at NADS, “a huge backlog of studies waiting for the facility to reopen.”

Located within the NADS facility, the NADS-1 is a 360-degree driving simulator with one of the largest motion envelopes of any simulator in the world. Already well recognized for its immersive experience, the team is upgrading the NADS-1 from an eight-projector to an all-encompassing 16-projector imaging system. Sixteen M-Vision LED projectors from Digital Projection International (DPI) were chosen to deliver the immersive content in the wraparound simulator. “From the projector capabilities to the incredible support we received from Phil Laney throughout the research phase,” shared Ahmad, “DPI stood out as the obvious choice.” The 40 degree vertical field of view plus 360 degree horizontal plane ensures that when sitting in the seat of the NADS-1, the viewer experiences 100% projected imagery with no break in the content.

With federal funding from the Department of Transportation, as well as regional funding from both the state of Iowa and the University of Iowa, NADS was always intended to be a shared-use facility for both government and industry use. “Whether public or private, there are no restrictions on the type of client we take in,” commented Ahmad. “This alone allows for a remarkably diverse stream of testing and resulting data to pass through the facility.” The transportation industry in particular is a regular client, as the facility produces controlled risk studies that analyze driving performance based on controlled levels of impairment in a very realistic environment. From that data, the NADS team builds algorithms that can predict driving performance based on sleep deprivation, intoxication, distraction and other impairments.

Ahmad insists that, although the NADS facility contains remarkably forward-focused technological advances, the facility’s success is equally due to the personnel’s experience and expertise. The combination of a world-renowned staff of experts and the advanced simulation capabilities allows for the creation of very specific, customized in-house simulation experiences. “We have a diverse collection of experts from disciplines across various fields that can work together to solve complex problems,” Ahmad explained. “Our depth in personnel brings us clients that can’t achieve their required type of research at another facility.” The staff is fully supported by NADS projects, ensuring that the facility remains profitable by creating custom, differentiated data solutions not available elsewhere.

Phil Laney, director of simulation and visualization at DPI, commented: “By using DPI’s affordable WUXGA LED projector technology, the National Advanced Driving Simulator will benefit from a 63% increase in resolution that not only improves the display performance of the simulator, but makes maintenance minimal for years to come.” Laney continued, “Rich, saturated LED imagery will improve fidelity in day scenes, LED dimming will improve night imagery and Fast Frame blur reduction will help the realism of any projected scene.”

XP Control Processors

Wohler Appoints Michael Wright Senior Sales Executive for RadiantGrid Business Line in North America

SAN FRANCISCO — Dec. 4, 2013 – Wohler Technologies today announced the appointment of Michael Wright to the role of senior sales executive, North America, for the company’s RadiantGrid business line. In this position, Wright will be responsible for raising the profile of the RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform(TM) and related file-based processing solutions, as well as for managing sales of RadiantGrid solutions to both new and existing customers across North America.

“Michael’s expertise in strategic sales and his experience working with a variety of complementary media-related enterprises make him a great fit for this new role,” said Craig Newbury, vice president sales, RadiantGrid at Wohler. “His familiarity with major players in the broadcast, media, and entertainment markets will be particularly valuable as RadiantGrid’s unique file-based solutions continue to gain traction in North America.”
