NEP to Acquire Global Television From Catalyst

Unites Two Leading TV Technical Production Experts to Create a Worldwide Entertainment Powerhouse

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia, and PITTSBURGH — Dec. 18, 2013 — NEP Group Inc. (‘NEP’) announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire GTV Holdings Pty Ltd (‘Global Television’ or ‘Global’) from Catalyst Investment Managers (‘Catalyst’). Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction brings together US-based NEP and Australia’s Global Television, uniting two of the world’s most experienced and successful television technical services companies.

NEP is one of the largest broadcast and live event service companies with operations across the United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil, and supporting thousands of events annually around the world. The acquisition of Global Television further expands NEP’s presence into Australia and Asia. NEP is majority-owned by private funds managed by Crestview Partners, with a significant ownership stake held by NEP’s management team.

NEP CEO Kevin Rabbitt said, “Global Television has an outstanding reputation for excellence in live sports and light entertainment and is the clear leader in the Australian television market. Together, NEP and Global Television offer a much broader pool of expertise, resources, and facilities and extend NEP’s services worldwide, adding significant value for our clients and partners who work internationally. We are excited to work with Global’s CEO Keith Andrews and his management team to continue to grow their business.

“With the support of our private equity partner, Crestview Partners, we have expanded our geographic footprint and established NEP as a worldwide leader in the industry. The Global acquisition is an important step in that process.”

Global facilitates the majority of premium live sport produced and broadcast in Australia, and the most-watched live entertainment programs. Six of 2013′s highest-rating television shows were Global projects, including the top two: the My Kitchen Rules and The Block Sky High winner announcement episodes.

Global has also achieved international recognition for its technical expertise in host broadcasting, partnering with production companies and broadcasters to win major contracts, including the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2014 G20 Leaders Summit in Brisbane.

Global will remain an independent operating entity based in Australia, led by Keith Andrews and his executive team.

Catalyst Managing Director Trent Peterson said, “Catalyst counts Global among our most successful investments, and we’ve been proud to work with Keith and his managers in achieving that.

“Global’s reputation for excellence is well understood in Australia. It’s a credit to Keith and his team that Global has been acquired by a much larger industry player with the reach and capability of NEP.

“We are especially pleased that Global is now part of an organization that shares its passion for great television and outstanding client service.”

Global Television CEO Keith Andrews added, “This is a great outcome for Global’s clients, staff, and partners. We’ve worked closely with NEP over the last four to five years on various major projects. The two organizations know one another well and I can confidently say we have similar cultures based on providing superior service to our clients.

“On behalf of the Global team, I thank our board of directors and Catalyst for their confidence in Global and their support as we’ve grown the company to its current level. We are all excited about the next chapter for Global Television as part of the NEP family.”

Combined with Global’s top-tier fleet of outside broadcast and studio facilities, NEP will offer over 70 high-definition (HD) outside broadcast units; several HD flypacks; studio facilities in Los Angeles, New York, London, Cardiff, Sydney, and Melbourne; thousands of plasma, LED, and projection video display solutions; as well as a large team of industry-leading engineering and technical experts.

The transaction is being financed entirely with debt arranged by Barclays and Morgan Stanley, and is expected to close in early 2014. AGM Partners LLC, Barclays and Morgan Stanley acted as financial advisors to NEP. Jones Day; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP; and Kirkland & Ellis LLP acted as legal advisors to NEP. Greenhill provided corporate advisory services to Catalyst.

New Videos Detail Proper Way to Remove and Mount a FUJINON Digital Servo Drive and Unique Features of New PL 14-35MM Zoom

Wayne, N.J. – Two new videos from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation – one describing the proper way to remove and mount a digital servo drive and the other on the benefits and features of the company’s new Premier PL 14-35mm Cabrio wide-angle zoom [ZK2.5x14] – are now available on Fujifilm’s YouTube Channel.

The FUJINON PL lenses feature an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making them suitable for use as a standard Cine Style PL lens or as an ENG-Style lens. The digital servo featured on the PL 19-90, the PL 85-300, and the new PL 14-35mm has 16-bit encoding, so operators are assured of accurate lens data output. Removing a servo drive and mounting it are not difficult, but if done incorrectly, the user will not have access to the full range of the servo’s zoom or focus capabilities. The metadata output can also be compromised, if the servo is not installed properly.

“We’re very excited to bring the PL 14-35 Cabrio to market,” said Thom Calabro, director of marketing and product development for the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation, who is the featured spokesperson on both videos. “This wide angle addition to the Cabrio family gives cinematographers the ability to shoot with a full range of high-performance lenses – from 14mm wide to 300mm tele.”

With its detachable digital servo, the PL 14-35mm Cabrio lens can be used as a self-contained ENG-style lens or Cine Style lens. Without the drive, industry-standard cine motors can be fitted.

The Premier PL 14-35mm zoom is lightweight and comfortable to use with today’s smaller 4K cameras, and has an expanded focal length range to 14-35mm at T2.9, with 200-degree focus rotation. It’s ideal for shooters looking for a lightweight zoom that can be used as a handheld to capture wide angles in tight spaces.

Designed using the latest proprietary optical simulation software, the PL 14-35mm lens offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image and in the corners of the frame. The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—including the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate. The PL 14-35mm lens supports Lens Data System (LDS) and /i metadata formats, and can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

Martin Audio MLA Compact Unites Redemption Church

Gilbert, AZ––When Redemption Church recently committed to an expansion and retrofit of their multipurpose worship and conference center, they wanted an audio, video and lighting system that would provide a truly meaningful experience for each one of their members.

The first challenge was the center itself, formed from an irregularly shaped room caused by a large extension designed to redefine the space without negatively impacting the original. Measuring about 180 feet wide by 60 feet deep, it was hardly ideal for reproducing sound, representing a very real challenge for any audio system.

Fortunately, church member Jim Jorgensen was an experienced audio engineer who had a close relationship with Redemption Lead Pastor Tim Maughan. Because Jorgensen had worked for leading audio providers and Martin Audio as a product support specialist, he was a logical choice as a consultant for this project.

When Maughan set out to find the ideal system for the new center, “Jim was the first person I called because he’d done the previous install in our chapel using Martin Audio W8LM line arrays. I didn’t want to do anything without knowing what he was thinking, because churches invariably have rooms with certain acoustic problems and typically there’s not a lot of work done to make them sound better.

“I wanted the new worship center to sound as good as it could be,” Tim continues. “Jim’s first recommendation was the new Martin Audio MLA Compact system which he thought would be ideal for us because of its coverage and control. So we began to talk about it to confirm what I needed from the system. It had to do both music reproduction really well and the spoken word with absolute clarity. Most of the church systems do one or the other, but rarely do both.

“Once I realized what it could do—and I trust Jim––I went to the team I work with and told them the investment in MLA Compact was worth it because we had to replace the sound equipment in every church building we’ve ever been a part of at least two or three times, so it’s more than worth bumping up the budget to get the system that we needed and would last for a long time.”

After a yearlong fundraising effort, Redemption purchased the MLA Compact system from On Stage Audio, a certified MLA installation partner. The actual audio setup consists of 12 MLA Compact enclosures hung in left, center, right hangs of four boxes each with two MLX subwoofers mounted under the platform stage at the outer corners. The system is completed by Martin Audio Merlin Controllers for loudspeaker and network management and also includes a Yamaha M7CL 48 channel mixer and a custom Whirlwind 64 channel splitter. Technical Director Tim Smith and rigger Mike “Milk” Arnold did the in-house installation.

The multi-purpose center holds up to 1000 members at each of the three services held on Sunday. Designed by debartolo architects ltd. for optimum sound, the space has walls with 4” of acoustic material covered by 1” slats of Cedar for the first eight feet. According to Jorgensen, “the room sounds drastically different above 10 feet in the air. The control and phase coherence of the MLA Compact system and predictability of the software enables them to make it sound great where the people are and decrease the energy where people aren’t.”

Much of the wall space is devoted to video with two 16-foot sections on the sides and a 28 ft. wide and 16 ft. tall screen behind the stage. The rest of the white walls are used for colored LED projections, all of which determined that the speakers had to be hung out of sight high up in the ceiling from flying frames attached to an angle iron hanging from trussing. Martin Audio Display™ prediction software was used to determine the optimum curvature of the arrays.

“The system location actually grew out of a ‘wrestling match’ with video because everyone wanted the same space,” says Maughan, “so the challenge was finding the right location for the speakers. We’ve been fans of Martin Audio with the W8LMs and the F2s we use for a mobile outdoor system because they deliver exactly what we expect. This was a test of asking the MLA Compact system to do something for us, so putting it up in the ceiling and changing the points where it hits the audience and dialing that in worked perfectly. The sound is exactly where we need it to be, which wouldn’t happen with another cabinet.

“I have huge expectations for audio,” Tim emphasizes. “Not just to reinforce sound, but to really make it musical. In most churches that I’ve been, none of the audio they’re running does that. It’s just sound reinforcement and often sounds really harsh without much quality. The MLA system has outperformed my expectations, which is rare.

“We have bands with electric instruments, amplifiers, and live drums that run the gamut from bluegrass to rock music. I was concerned that the subs would overpower everything with that ‘wall of speaker’ type of bass sound, but we put just two MLX under the stage platform and they’re the best sounding subs I’ve ever heard in my life.”

Maughan feels audio, video and lighting is a very subjective area in any church, especially Redemption, which is moving towards a more contemporary style of worship. Pleasing every member of the congregation, from the youngest to the oldest can be a delicate balance.

As it happens, the congregation has not only accepted the upgrade, it’s united them as well: “Sound is always very challenging,” Tim concludes. “If it’s too loud or too harsh, we get a lot of comments. We have hundreds of older people in the congregation, and this is the first time we’ve done a technical upgrade where we haven’t heard one complaint about the audio. It has worked for everyone across the board and helped them experience the service in a much more meaningful and profound way.”

By Request: HARMAN Professional Components Are Installed In Houston’s New Indian Pentecostal Church

HOUSTON, Texas – Indian Pentecostal Church is a newly built house of worship in Houston, Texas that opened in October. The church’s 1,079-seat auditorium features a HARMAN JBL VERTEC®, Crown and BSS Audio-based sound system that wouldn’t be out of place in a major concert venue – in fact, the church specifically requested a VERTEC line array system when planning the facility.

Andy Tyndall, Co-Owner for Whitehouse, Texas sound contractor Cross Systems Audio-Visual Services (www.crosssystems.net) noted, “The church management did a lot of research before hiring us and actually told us they wanted not just a JBL system, but a JBL VERTEC system. They knew the level of performance they wanted and were well aware of the brand’s reputation.”

Cross Systems outfitted the auditorium with nine VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements per side, along with two VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers per side and four VTX Series S28 subwoofers. Four JBL STX812M 2-way floor monitors and two PRX612M 2-way powered monitors are deployed as stage monitors, augmented by seven AC15 compact speakers as stage fills.

Six Crown Macro-Tech® i Series MA12000i amplifiers power the line arrays and subwoofers, with two Crown CTs Series CTs2000 amps and a CTs4200 driving the stage monitors and stage fills respectively. In addition to the main system, 14 JBL Control 26CT in-ceiling loudspeakers and a Crown CTs600 amplifier provide audio to the church’s foyer, nursery, boardroom and restrooms. Signal processing and networking for the entire system is handled by a BSS BLU-100 12 x 8 signal processor with digital audio bus and a BSS BLU-BOB2 break-out box.

Cross Systems went with the VERTEC VT4886 line arrays because in Tyndall’s experience they have “a ton of headroom” and deliver the dynamic range necessary for a church service with live music in a larger space. Tyndall chose the Crown amps because of their high power output, outstanding reliability and the fact that they work hand in glove with VERTEC line arrays. “More importantly, the Crown amplifiers ensure we’re getting the most out of the JBL VERTEC system.” The Crown DSP presets are specifically optimized for use with VERTEC (and other JBL) loudspeakers and provide optimized frequency and phase response, horizontal coverage and other sonic advantages and enabled Tyndall and his crew to more precisely tailor the performance of the speakers to the auditorium’s acoustics.

In addition to providing sound reinforcement for the pastor’s and other speakers’ voices, Indian Pentecostal Church will be using the system for amplifying a full praise band during services and special events. Tyndall was well aware the church would settle for nothing less than the best. “The clarity, power and even coverage of the system from the front to the back of the room is superb. This is a brand-new building and we wanted to make sure we got it right the first time,” he stated. “I think anyone who hears it would say we did.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. To facilitate system setup, HiQnet Audio Architect 1.2 utilizes graphical, diagrammatic representations of the installed or live sound venue, and the components and loudspeakers in the system. Devices “understand” both their physical and logical placement – in racks, arrays and rooms – and the software “learns” how they are to be used in the real world, while offering extensive setup and configuration capabilities. Audio Architect 1.2 works with numerous HARMAN Professional products and is compatible with diverse digital audio platforms including AVB, HARMAN BLU link, Cirrus Logic CobraNet®, and Audinate® Dante.

HiQnet Audio Architect 1.2 now offers comprehensive support for compiling HiQnet control strings for third-party controller devices like AMX and Crestron. Information can now be exported from the HiQnet system design for direct import into the configuration software of the desired controller. To conveniently separate system-wide control parameters, any number of new third-party controller devices can be added into the system design file and then configured separately. For each controller, a dedicated full-screen mode is provided for compiling its parameters and presets. Within the single view for each third-party device, the properties of each HiQnet parameter may be set, the string format configured to match that expected by Crestron or AMX control software or a designer’s custom format, and the final list exported for repurposing in a third-party control system design.

HiQnet Audio Architect 1.2 provides support for the new Crown DCi Network Series DCi 4|1250N and DCi 2|1250N high-power networkable amplifiers, which recently began shipping. In addition, version 1.2 offers compatibility with the BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-GPX GPIO expander, a network-controlled component that facilitates the addition of control inputs, logic outputs and relays to systems that require extra analog control and interfacing capability.

Another significant upgrade is version 1.2’s ability to store Audio Architect venue files on Soundweb London devices for file archiving purposes. This enables compatible Soundweb London components that are connected to the network to be used as backup storage devices in a manner analogous to an external hard drive. A number of additional performance optimizations and firmware updates round out the version 1.2 upgrades.

“The new version 1.2 upgrades continue the progression of making Audio Architect a true universal software solution for professional audio system control,” said Adam Holladay, Market Manager, System Development and Integration Group. “With the addition of third-party controller device support and other upgrades, we have significantly broadened the usefulness and functionality of the application.”
