deltatre and Vizrt expanding partnership for Magma Pro Football solution

Bergen, Norway – Italy-based sports media and technology company deltatre and Vizrt broaden their partnership with Magma Pro powered by Viz Libero for the upcoming Football World Championship. Magma Pro powered by Viz Libero extends deltatre’s Magma product offering typically used for TV graphics and tournament statistics (including tracking data) with the virtual graphic capabilities and 3D camera flights offered by Viz Libero.

Viz Libero, Vizrt’s 3D sports analysis tool, accesses the Magma database to attach and display deltatre statistics to a player within the Viz Libero analysis, either by applying tied-to-pitch graphics such as heat maps, or with player pointers to tag the players on the field. The integration of Magma’s player tracking data allows for very-fast turnaround analysis clip preparation, as well as direct and easy interactive analysis by the studio expert. In addition, Magma Pro powered by Viz Libero enables a very smooth and fast workflow for accessing the game events and video footage stored in Magma within Viz Libero.

deltatre has been using Vizrt broadcast graphics products since 2004. Earlier this year they added several new Vizrt products to their production setup. Viz Trio, Vizrt’s character generator (CG), is being used extensively for live production of all real-time graphics, including lower thirds, match-ups, and score boards. Viz Virtual Studio creates augmented reality graphics on set, providing presenters with a new way of highlighting key players and match-ups.

Jim Irving, Commercial Director at deltatre, said, “We have a successful track record of integrating Vizrt products into innovative solutions for deltatre’s clients. Therefore, it’s fitting that the culmination of this relationship, Magma Pro powered by Viz Libero, will be used prominently during the biggest sporting event of 2014.”

“This solution will make anyone’s coverage of the World Cup really shine,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, Vizrt CTO. “The mix of deltatre’s high-quality sports event data and production with our Viz Libero produces a system that gives viewers unparalleled insight into what is happening on the pitch. I can’t wait to see it live during the tournament.”

Magma Pro powered by Viz Libero will be unveiled for the first time this December in Rio de Janeiro in preparations for the upcoming Football World Championship. More information about the solution can be found at http://magma.deltatre.com and on www.vizrt.com.

DPA Microphones Win Popolski Family Approval

Members of the popular German cabaret act The Popolski Family are so delighted with their recently acquired DPA microphones that they have made a short video extolling their virtues for DPA’s German distributor, Mega Audio.

The comedy-music show is currently using three DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to capture the sound of its accordion and brass section.

Sound engineer Hans Wollrath, who is also CEO of The Popolski Family company, says: “The performance of these microphones has been outstanding and the hardware, cables and connectors appear to be virtually unbreakable. We have been really pleased with the sound they have delivered. They are very reliable in a touring environment because they are so tough, and they are equally good for video and television appearances because they are so small and unobtrusive.”

Founded in 2008 by Achim Hagemann under the pseudonym Pavel Popolski, The Popolski Family plays 70 live dates a year in Germany and is seen annually by more than 100,000 people. The show revolved around a pseudo-Polish family of musicians who weave popular rock classics into a comedy framework.

DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Mics Hit the Road on MKS Tour

DPA’s d:facto™ II Vocal Microphones have been proving their flexibility and giving great performances on tour with MKS, the original Sugababes line-up.

The mics have also been at work in the prestigious setting of the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. Charlie Dale, in-house engineer at Ronnie Scott’s and Front of House engineer for the band MKS and US rapper Angel Haze, is using DPA d:facto II Vocal Microphones across all these very different setups.

It was at Ronnie Scott’s that Dale first came across the microphones. DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network lent the club a unit to try out and Dale was immediately impressed.

“They instantly became my mic of choice for lead vocals, surpassing two big brands I had been using previously,” he says. “‘The d:facto’s mostly flat frequency response until its soft boost at 10 kHz gave me the ability to sculpt a very true representation of the performer’s voice with clear highs so that I don’t have to fight against feedback to pull out, and with all the warm tone one would expect from many jazz vocals.”

Dale decided that for the same reasons he wanted to use it on his pop gigs, again allowing him to easily create vocal sounds on a par with the studio-quality vocals of the artists’ records. And it’s not just the engineers who delight in the sound of the d:facto II Vocal Microphones.

“With performers, the clarity of the mic is often commented on,” Dale adds. “It allows a vocalist to hear the nuances of their vocal and gives them more control, even through loud stage wedges.”

Dale has had the opportunity to work with many big-name microphone brands in his career but, after hearing the d:facto, he believes that none of them offer the clarity and tone he wants from a live vocal.

“With MKS, all three of the girls have very different and distinct-sounding voices, and the d:facto II Vocal Microphone handled all of them with ease,” he says.

Dale’s work with rapper Angel Haze could hardly be more different.

“She rarely sings on a gig,” Dale explains. “Instead, she spends most of the time rapping hard and fast into the capsule at close proximity, often cupping the mic as many rap artists do. But the d:facto II handles all this well, making it much easier for me to pick up every syllable she spits out without loss of tonal quality on her vocal.”

Dale’s criteria for an excellent microphone are, he says, clarity, tone, excellent feedback rejection and low off-axis noise. To date, artists who Dale has used DPA’s d:facto with have all been very positive about the microphone, as have other engineers.

“Having a great vocal sound is often the hardest part of the mix, especially on noisy stages, and the d:facto helps on that front by offering a very clear and clean initial signal,” he says. “Its linear off-axis response means that what little bleed there is from wedges and back line is very clear, un-distorted and, most importantly, low-level, allowing me to get a great vocal sound every time, no matter how big or small the room, what the musical style is and how loud the band are. Studio-quality vocal tone on every gig – how could I say no to that?”

NBC Sports Group’s International Broadcast Center Adds Vista System Spyder for Studio 3

NBC Sports Group’s International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., is increasing its use of Spyder X20 systems, both companies announced today. Having previously used Vista Systems Spyder image processors, the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) has acquired a third Spyder for Studio 3 in Stamford, which is dedicated to Premier League soccer on weekends and the daily Pro Football Talk show.

NBC Sports Group is a long-time Spyder user, beginning with 30 Rockefeller Plaza’s Studio 8G for Football Night in America in 2006. “We were the first broadcast entity to use Spyder for multiple layers and display,” says Randy Raddatz, vice president of sourcing and production services. Since ’06, NBC Sports has embraced the Spyder while relocating most of its production to the new facility in Stamford.

Studio 3 in Stamford boasts “the largest indoor broadcast wall in the world,” according to Raddatz, which forms the main backdrop in the space. Two Spyder X20 systems are required to drive the approximately 36 x 12-foot LCD projection wall comprised of 28 70-inch Barco OL Series projection modules in a 7 x 4 configuration. The Spyders also drive a 3D rear-projection wall designed by Jack Morton and located upstage center.

“The projection wall shows many of the feeds from various soccer matches or a highlights package from a specific game with graphics,” says Raddatz. “The layering aspect of the Spyder allows us to use this very large template space and maximize production flow, graphics, the visual presentation and data feeds of the games themselves. We can have limitless configurations of pictures, video and graphics.”

Raddatz points out that Spyder “helps us tell the story, display the story and enhance the story. It’s all in support of the content – it never takes over. Spyder’s flexibility, layering capabilities, usage of total template and ability to show things in a different configuration with very high quality and resolution make Spyder an awesome tool.”

Raddatz reports that Vista Systems has been “a great partner” in supporting Spyder. “Once you have the box, the important part of the partnership is support,” he says. “Vista has been working with us to understand and define the capabilities of the system and work with the production design team to explain what Spyder can do. It’s a very collaborative process from design implementation through subsequent support. Spyder is great technology enhanced by a great team.”

RockWave Fiber Systems Deploys Riedel RockNet Audio Network for Red Bull and Traxxas TORC Racing Events

GLENDALE, Calif. — Dec. 10, 2013 — Riedel Communications, a leading provider of real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that RockWave Fiber Systems has used a Riedel RockNet real-time, low-latency audio distribution network to support the Red Bull AMA Amateur National MX Championship and the Traxxas TORC (The Off-Road Championship) Series. Enabling bidirectional fiber-based audio transport, the Riedel RockNet frames provided a copper cable alternative that allowed RockWave to cover the extensive race courses with much greater simplicity and ease.

“Managing the distance of various audio locations from the main audio mix is our primary challenge during race events, but Riedel’s RockNet solves this problem by providing flawless analog-to-digital conversion of audio, which then can be transported and distributed via fiber,” said Justin Maita, chief engineer at RockWave Fiber Systems. “The difference between using a couple of pieces of tactical fiber, rather than the many heavy DT-12 cables normally required, is impossible to convey. Ultimately, this approach saves us days on the install and a lot of time on the strike, thus allowing techs to spend valuable time working on other important technical details.”

Designed for heavy-duty road use, RockNet is a real-time, low-latency audio distribution network that conveys up to 160 24 bit/48 kHz audio channels on a single fiber core at distances of up to 12.4 miles. (Alternatively, the system can be used with RJ-45 CAT-5 cabling.) All devices feature locking IEC connectors for redundant power supplies, all other audio connectors are entirely gold-plated, and the circuit design is streamlined to assure ultra-low noise and minimum distortion for excellent audio quality.

RockWave used Riedel RockNet systems for the Red Bull AMA Amateur National MX Championship from July 28 to Aug. 3 at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., and at the Traxxas TORC series held in September at Nevada’s Primm Off Road Raceway. For production at both events, RockWave connected all locations with Riedel 351 and 352 fiber TX/RX devices and single-mode TAC fiber, to RockNet frames connected locally to one another via Riedel CAT-5 jumpers. In the field where audio required voltage for communications and IFBs, the company connected wetting devices to the frames.

Thanks to this Riedel solution, RockWave did not use a single piece of heavy DT-12 audio cable during the Red Bull AMA Amateur National MX Championship. Instead, the company used 16 RockNet frames, deploying half in the field and the other half in the main TV compound, where the network passed all the field audio, with signals going in both directions, to the main audio hub/mix over fiber.

With the numerous audio drops used during high-profile motocross and off-road races, production typically would require as many as 20 separate DT-12 cables, some going as far as 1,000 feet, to accommodate all the show audio. Installation of this cabling is easily a day’s work or more, but using the RockNet system and fiber, the engineer on site for the TORC event was able accomplish in one day the audio network configuration work that previously took two or three days.

At TORC, RockWave used 11 Riedel RockNet frames along with a Riedel MADI interface, which was installed in the broadcast compound to enable interfacing with primary audio. With this solution, the company was able to pass all audio for the show down two short pieces of coax cable, and then down TAC fiber to the field.

Further information about Riedel and the company’s products is available at www.riedel.net.
