Shanghai Mook Club’s Exhilarating Nightlife Created with HARMAN’s Martin LED Lights

SHANGHAI, China – Shanghai Mook Club, one of the most popular nightlife hotspots in the financial capital of China, recently installed a full HARMAN’s Martin lighting system, creating an exciting experience for Shanghai’s partying public. The club’s vibrant and urban-style interior design is complete with a vast number of Martin lighting fixtures.

Mook combines local music with international flavors for a premium clubbing experience, hosting world-renowned DJ’s and bands on a monthly basis. Therefore, it needed a lighting system as versatile as Martin to accommodate its broad music selection.

To bring an extraordinary party experience to the nightclub, Martin designed the system to be highly adaptable, yet consistent and reliable in each function. Its lineup of lighting fixtures, combined with hazers and fog machines, outfitted the Mook club with all the desired visual effects.

For the installation of visual effects in this club, Martin provided 16 MAC 350 Entour high power LED’s, 16 MAC 101 moving head wash LED’s, two Jem K1 Hazers, two Jem ZR-44 Hi-Mass foggers and one LightJockey 2 Controller.

The MAC 350 Entour does not fall short in high-powered brightness, coupling an 8000-lumen output with motorized iris. The fixture is Mook Club’s flagship lighting, co-existing with the club’s innovative design. The MAC 350 Entour’s dimming, strobing and shutter effects synchronize perfectly with a wide range of music, while its high rotational speed makes it an excellent partner to Mook’s fast-paced songs.

Smoke is an indispensable element to high-end entertainment and lighting systems. Martin Jem K1 Superior performance, sustainable operation and consistent fog output ensures a uniform release of smoke density. The Jem K1 creates the fog by intelligently and efficiently mixing air with smoke oil to accentuate the rich and varied lighting effects. A low quantity of smoke oil is consumed, leaving no soot or pollution after use. To increase visual effects, Martin installed a Jem ZR44 Hi-Mass fogger to suit a host of performances in the club, which has a continuous fog output of 1200 m3/min.

Martin systems are known to perform flawlessly throughout every hour of the night for club-goers. Through endless testing it ensures top-notch reliability and consistency of LED and smoke machine output.

A Martin LightJockey 2 console controls both smoke and lighting systems, which is one of the industry’s most popular PC control units in the past decade. The user-centric lighting control software is both user-centric and flexible. It is a crucial component for professional lighting performances.

Masque Sound Celebrates the Spirit of the Holiday Season with Christmas Live! 2013 at GraceWay Bible Church

As GraceWay Bible Church gets ready to stage its annual holiday program, Christmas Live!, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, returns with a custom audio equipment package to support Sound Designer Nathan Schmalbach and Technical Director Kevin Webb’s production.

Now in its fifth year, Christmas Live! is an immersive experience transporting visitors back 2,000 years to the very first Christmas. An hour-long guided walking tour, it features 11 interactive scenes with actors and animals located in and around the church grounds. The cast and crew total 300 people, with 15 involved directly in its technical aspects.

This is Masque Sound’s third year providing rental gear for Christmas Live!. As the program has grown over the past three years, so has the company’s support. In 2011, Masque Sound supplied a large wireless rig to distribute audio throughout the show. Last year, the rental package grew to include a semi-centralized system, and this year, Masque Sound provided a system that will allow the entire program to be centralized.

“Our goal over the past few years has been to centralize all of the controls for the entire program, which is no easy task when you are talking about remotely mixing and controlling 11 different shows, all of which are active at the same time,” says Schmalbach. “We have been working with Masque Sound for months to make sure we have the necessary equipment to execute this. It’s been a challenge, but Masque Sound has done a great job in giving us the gear and support to make our vision a reality.”

In order to mix the show from one central point, Schmalbach and his team will utilize a binaural audio (3D Audio) remote listening system. The system is composed of AKG C414 B-ULS and Earthworks M30 microphones, Genelec 1032A and 8030A monitors, XTA DP448s and Meyer Sound Galileo 616s for processing, XTA DS8000/D splitters, Rational Acoustics Smaart software and a Midas Venice 240 console. Audio is distributed from the control center with a Riedel RockNet 300 digital audio network. The speaker package consists of L-Acoustics MTD108As, 115XTs, SB218 and dB-SUB subwoofers, and Meyer Sound UPM-1Ps, UPA-1Ps and UPJ-1Ps. All of the L-Acoustics speakers are powered via Lab.gruppen fP Series amplifiers.

Figure53 QLab software running on Mac Minis with RME Fireface 800 interfaces handles the show’s effects and music playback. Masque Sound also provided a large wireless rig consisting of a Sennheiser 2000 Series 24-channel kit. To accompany the Sennheiser wireless package, Masque Sound supplied four Domed Helical Antennas from its sister company, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS).

“Masque Sound is always there for whatever we need. The program would not be as technically advanced as it is without their first-class equipment and support,” adds Schmalbach. “They do a wonderful job, and we can’t imagine working with anyone else.”

Christmas Live! will take place Friday, December 6 and Friday, December 13, starting at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 8 and Sunday, December 15, starting at 4:30 p.m. For more information and to get free tickets, visit www.gracewaybc.org.

Clay Paky Sharpys and grandMA2 Consoles are Winners at “Miss America 2014” Pageant

The Miss America pageant returned to its Atlantic City origins this year and lighting designer Allen Branton was charged with lighting the cavernous Boardwalk Hall and making sure 53 beautiful women looked their best whenever the TV camera turned their way. He was aided by Clay Paky Sharpy and Sharpy Wash fixtures and grandMA2 lighting consoles from Atomic Lighting in Lititz, Pennsylvania. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for both Clay Paky and MA Lighting.

Branton marked his sixth consecutive year lighting the pageant, which was televised on ABC-TV. After spending a number of years in Las Vegas the show moved back to Atlantic City where “the venue, audience and scenery doubled in size,” he reports. “Given the size of the hall and way the show was set in the room, every single element of production had to be rigged from overhead – and there’s no permanent rigging infrastructure. So there were 240 individual rigging points for lighting, sound, video, scenery, cable management, cameras. Atomic provided and managed all that, which we hadn’t needed in Vegas; their attention to detail is second to none.”

Branton mounted 24 Sharpys on truss for “Miss America 2014.” “Sharpys are a dramatic little effects light for music and variety programming, particularly for their size and cost,” he says. “They’re a wonderfully fun and dynamic tool. In beam arrays they add spice and energy to the Sharpy Washes.”

He also employed two dozen Sharpy Washes as utility and backlights positioned on truss in the gaps formed by the finger-like arches that created a ceiling over the stage. “Having a light with that much output in that small a physical package came in handy,” he says. “The Sharpy washes provided a nice delicate array of light for 53 women who needed a hairlight from the overhead zone. I’m glad we had them.”

Programmers Felix Peralta, Kevin Lawson and Laura Frank utilized a full-size grandMA2 and a pair of grandMA2 Lights with fader wings. Peralta was responsible for programming the scenic and effects lighting for the show, Lawson the key contestant and audience lighting, and Frank the media. “We carved up the show into three different aspects of lighting design, but all the consoles were networked so the programmers could work independently or collaboratively,” Branton explains.

Kevin Lawson praises grandMA2′s “fantastic multi-user capacity,” something he and Peralta took advantage of, and the system’s expandability. “We can keep adding universes and not hit a ceiling,” he says. “And grandMA2 doesn’t slow down based on the number of fixtures and parameters you use.”

Branton says his projects “never use anything but grandMA2 consoles anymore. Its architecture is user friendly, and there’s so much data to be managed these days.”

Branton notes that while “the faces of the 53 women competing change” over time, the Miss America pageant is remarkably consistent in its format and goal. “People tune in expecting to see these women in (quite literally) their best light; we never know which ones will be in close up. So we have to make their close-up photography really consistent woman to woman, act to act, show to show, year to year,” he says.
