ASHLY AUDIO’S NETWORK MATRIX PROCESSOR AND AMP SIMPLIFY USER CONTROL DURING STRESSFUL TIMES AT MICHIGAN FUNERAL HOMES

ROYAL OAKS, MICHIGAN: A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors have been serving families in suburban Detroit, Michigan for nearly a century. Now, an Ashly Audio ne24.24M matrix processor, a ne4250.70 multi-channel amplifier, and (critically) three WR-5 programmable remote controls give the funeral home robust, easy-to-use sound reinforcement.

“They used to have to go into the equipment closet to select input sources or change the gain for music or microphone inputs,” explained Mark Monarch, owner of Abel Electronics. “Different people would be in there, and none of them were necessarily technically inclined. It was easy for the gain structure to get messed up.” With an improper gain structure, of course, the sound quality wasn’t commensurate with the caliber of service that Desmond is known for. In addition, the sound system was old and ready for replacement. With Ashly’s modern user control solutions, Abel Electronics could robustly and inexpensively supply each of the home’s three visitation rooms with its own customized control.

At its heart, the new system consists of an Ashly ne24.24M processor outfitted with eight inputs and four outputs paired with a four-channel Ashly ne4250.70 amplifier. The amplifier delivers 250W per channel to new 70-volt SoundTube in-ceiling loudspeakers. In addition, a Marantz USB recorder allows loved ones to record a funeral service. Four new AudioTechnica wireless microphones (two handheld and two lavalier) join two existing CD players and two auxiliary inputs (suitable for iPods and the like) on the input side. Perhaps the most important improvement from the user’s perspective is the addition of three Ashly WR-5 programmable remote controls – one for each sub-dividable space. Monarch programmed them to allow appropriate selection of inputs, input volumes, and output volumes. In addition, they allow simple room combining functionality.

“We love working with Ashly equipment,” said Monarch. “It’s easy to use, easy to program, and we have zero problems with it. We have no customer call backs on account of Ashly gear. Once it’s set, it’s set, and the sound quality is excellent. Desmond loves the new user control because no one has to go into the equipment closet anymore. The closet is now under lock and key! They understand the WR-5 and are happy to have all of the relevant controls so accessible.”

Symetrix Zone Mix 761 and ARC-WEB Add Functionality, Sound Quality and Smartphone Control to Hampton’s Upscale Dockers Waterside

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Although it is one of the premier dining and entertainment establishments in the upscale resort villages of the Hamptons, Dockers Waterside went without a fully-integrated professional sound system until only recently. The attractions that draw vacationers, weekenders, and residents to Dockers Waterside include regular live music, two outdoor “living rooms,” three bars, scores of tables that overlook the bay, and, of course, five-star cuisine. Taylor Sound of Holtsville, New York dramatically improved the sound system with a cost-effective and comprehensive Symetrix Zone Mix 761 fixed-architecture processor and the owner and management are enjoying convenient control from their smartphones via Symetrix ARC-WEB.

“Dockers Waterside previously had some amplifiers and music-store-grade analog and digital processors,” explained Bill Taylor, owner of Taylor Sound. “Some of the components had gone bad, but the real motivation for upgrading the system was the owner’s inability to manage the inconsistent levels coming out of his music players. His solution was to try to compress the signal so as to achieve uniform output, but the compression sucked the life out of the music and killed the low end. It just didn’t sound good.” The automatic gain control (AGC) in the Symetrix Zone Mix 761, together with the rest of its processing power, produced vastly better results.

Inputs to the 12-input Zone Mix 761 include an iPod, a Sonos music player system, output from the live music system, and a wireless microphone for parties and other events. Taylor used all six of its outputs to feed six separate zones in Dockers Waterside via three new Crown XLS 1000 amplifiers and the existing loudspeakers. Additional improvements include a collection of AudioTechnica paddle antennas that provide coverage for the wireless microphone throughout the establishment. The owner and management select zone inputs and adjust volumes via Symetrix ARC-WEB, which they access from their smartphones. Staff can also make necessary changes using a hardwired Symetrix ARC-2e wall-mounted, menu-driven remote located near the main bar.

“We got the system up and dialed in very quickly,” said Taylor. “We were able to give Dockers so much more functionality than it had previously. Symetrix’ AGC algorithm is great, and the owner is very pleased with the quality and consistency of the sound now. Being able to hand him ARC-WEB put the installation over the edge. He loves having that kind of convenient, cutting-edge control!”

DANLEY SOUND LABS SH-50s AT THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST CHURCH – LIFECHURCH.TV

JENKS, OKLAHOMA: With weekly attendance topping 46,000, LifeChurch.tv is, by many counts, the largest church in the country. It has eighteen physical campuses stretching from New York to Florida and back to its headquarters in Oklahoma. As one might guess from its embrace of the “.tv” suffix, LifeChurch.tv also has a vibrant online presence, including a weekly online service and a virtual church in the online virtual world – Second Life. Its Jenks, Oklahoma location recently opened its doors and welcomed new members (or in LifeChurch.tv’s parlance, “partners”) to a progressive church experience anchored by a dynamic live band. As in many of the more recent LifeChurch.tv locations, stereo clusters of Danley Sound Labs SH-50 full-range loudspeakers deliver the full impact of the band and convey spoken word and video playback with crystalline intelligibility.

Summit Integrated Systems of Lafayette, Colorado began working with LifeChurch.tv six years ago and has designed and installed the A/V systems at most of the campus locations. “The fact that LifeChurch.tv continues to build new campuses has given us the opportunity to critique and grow with each design/build project,” explained Shane Beeson, church relationship manager and director of sales and Marketing at Summit Integrated Systems. “After every project, we meet with the LifeChurch.tv technical staff to evaluate the systems and discuss what we can improve upon. Danley Sound Lab products have been a part of Summit’s product line since Danley launched in 2005, and Danley became a part of the LifeChurch.tv conversation five years ago. We were exploring ways to improve the audio quality of their multi-site campuses while still being mindful of budget and to meet their request for a stereo system using point-source boxes.”

Although LifeChurch.tv requests stereo coverage of the worship auditorium at most sites, it also typically compromises on the architecture such that the ceiling height is lower than would be optimal. “Like every church, LifeChurch.tv operates within a budget,” said Beeson. “The ceiling height makes it challenging to get the right coverage and impact. Moreover, acoustic treatment is usually the minimum needed to get the space up and running. That was the case at Jenks, so we designed two 3-box clusters of Danley SH-50s. The supreme pattern control and smooth phase response of the Danley SH-50 gave us the control we needed for excellent coverage of the seats and minimal coverage of the walls. Danley’s innovative solution allowed us to increase performance and offset budget challenges by using a loudspeaker product with maximum pattern control to keep the sound in the seating areas without overexciting the room reflections.” In addition, Beeson noted that because the Danley SH-50 is passive, it required a minimum number of processor and amplifier channels, which helped the project stay on budget.

The Jenks system begins with a Yamaha CL5 paired with RIO stage boxes, which act as a digital snake and patch bay to collect inputs from the stage. The output from the CL5 feeds a Biamp Audia Flex, which handles loudspeaker management and processing. Lab.gruppen C-Series amplifiers power the system. Mounted at the seventeen-foot ceiling, three close-packed Danley SH-50s per side provide the main stereo coverage for the room with forty feet between them. Four subs provide low-frequency extension from below the stage. Six Danley SH-Mini loudspeakers complete the system by providing side-fill at the edge of each cluster and front-fill from the edge of a portable stage when needed.

Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante Networked Audio DSP Keeps Indiana Town Dancin’ in the Streets

GREENFIELD, INDIANA: Although the city of Greenfield, Indiana is now a suburb of Indianapolis, its history runs deep into the 1800s, when it was a railway stop and the birthplace of famed poet James Whitcomb Riley. The city celebrates that tradition for a long weekend every October with Riley Days, which ranks among the Hoosier State’s best-attended festivals. Because Greenfield also puts on a Christmas festival and numerous other smaller citywide events throughout the year, it recently decided to invest in a citywide sound reinforcement system. Local A/V integration firm Force Technologies designed and installed the system for future expansion and convenient control using the Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante networked audio signal processor and ARC-WEB user control for mobile devices.

“Riley Days is a big deal,” said A.J. Fager, owner of Force Technology Solutions. “Greenfield closes down its main streets, and vendors from all around set up tents. The city officials wanted a permanent sound reinforcement system that would serve Riley Days, as well as the other events that the city hosts. The Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 was the perfect processor because it is powerful, cost-effective, and easily scalable via Dante. Moreover, we could give them customized control via SymVue real-time user control panel application running on any Windows compatible PC and simultaneously give them simple, intuitive control for technicians’ smartphones via Symetrix’ ARC-WEB technology.”

In its initial deployment, the system is comprised of eight zones, each of which are independently tuned and delayed to minimize echo effects. Weatherproof Community R.5HP 8 Ohm and R.5HPt 70-Volt loudspeakers mounted to poles and powered by Crown CDi-Series amplifiers now dot downtown Greenfield. “Those loudspeakers and amplifiers are capable of delivering high sound pressure, and the design became a case of ‘less is more,’” said Fager. “When we modeled the system, it was apparent that more loudspeakers would have complicated the delay scheme and ultimately resulted in more harm than good.” Inputs to the system include two music sources and two wireless microphone systems.

The Greenfield IT department manages the citywide sound reinforcement system. Fager designed a custom Windows-compatible, PC-based control interface using Symetrix SymVue software. The interface consists of a map of the city broken down by zone. Within each zone, technicians can control volume and other aspects of system performance. Because such adjustments are sometimes better made from the zone itself, Fager also gave them a Symetrix ARC-WEB interface. Technicians access the password protected ARC-WEB interface from their smartphones and can thus make adjustments from anywhere.

Already, the city officials are excited to expand the system with four more zones. Fager anticipated this, and that was part of the reason why he went with the Dante networked SymNet Radius 12×8. Because its full processing power is far from tapped, Fager can simply add a Symetrix SymNet xOut 12 and, via the magic of Dante, the system will have the required additional outputs at little expense.

PRODUCER/ENGINEER NOAH SHAIN RECORDS BREAKOUT ARTIST DEAD SARA ON AN API 1608

MALIBU, CALIFORNIA: Producer Noah Shain recently purchased an analog API 1608 small-format console to record breakout artist Dead Sara in a Malibu mansion for a forthcoming release on Epic Records. The tracks will form the follow-up to the band’s 2012 eponymous self-release. Shain, who is best known for his work with Sonny Moore (Skrillex) and Atreyu, purchased the API 1608 because it was, in his words, “the only console available with a small enough footprint and a big enough sound.”

After recording their previous album with Shain at Sonic Ranch in Texas, the band members had their heart set on taking the laid back experience they had there to the next level. “They didn’t want to work in a studio at all,” Shain said. “They just wanted to work in a house. I said, ‘OK, but if we’re going to work in a house, we’re going to do it right. I’m not bringing my laptop over to your buddy’s apartment.’ In the end, we rented an 8,000 square-foot Malibu mansion for two months. All told, we paid about as much going that route as we would have paid going to any of the world-class L.A. studios that I tried to talk them into originally.”

As a self-described API-fan who had been considering a 1608 to complement his hybrid, bus-intensive mix style, Shain recognized the sonic and logistic advantages of having a 1608 for the two-month remote date with Dead Sara. “I like discrete transistor electronics,” he said. “That’s saying something, because Shain’s workflow is unique. Like Michael Brauer, Shain separately processes stems according to their role in the music. He uses eight passive busses and saturates signal on the other end with boutique gain make-up amps. “The 1608 is the perfect heart for that kind of system,” he said. “It’s small enough to make it easy, and I can still focus a lot on the computer for a truly hybrid workflow.”

With the remote recording date with Dead Sara finished, Shain has moved the new 1608 into his three-room studio located inside Bedrock, a 120-room rehearsal space in the hip Echo Park neighborhood of L.A. “Bedrock is a great place with a great community of musicians,” he said. “A lot of notable bands rehearse there. My door is open and a lot of people are going to see the new API 1608.”

Kramer Electronics is pleased to introduce the
614T/R detachable fiber optical transmitter and receiver set for sending and receiving single link DVI signals with resolutions of up to 1920×1200 at 60Hz, over one multimode fiber optic cable with SC connectors. Kramer is also pleased to introduce the 616T/R detachable fiber optic transmitter and receiver set for sending and receiving dual link DVI signals with resolutions of up to WQXGA (2560×1600 @60Hz) or WQUXGA (3840×2400 @33Hz vertical refresh rate) over duplex multimode fiber optic cable with two LC connectors.

Both pairs of transmitters and receivers operate up to a range of 1,640 ft. Systems integration specialist Broadcast Networks has consolidated its leading position in the broadcast market by appointing five key members of staff to its technical team.

Peter Timmons, Francis Lea, Ben Curtis, Nick Petty and Philip Walters have all joined the company from Sony Professional Solutions Europe where they worked closely with Malcolm Robinson, Broadcast Networks’ recently appointed Director – Media & Broadcast Solutions.

Clay Paky Sharpys Get the Justin Timberlake Experience on His New World Tour

Justin Timberlake kicked off his “20/20 Experience World Tour” in Montreal and Clay Paky Sharpys and Sharpy Washes were out in force.

True to its name, the tour is “an experience rather than a show,” says lighting director Nick Whitehouse. “It’s very visual with lots of projection and lighting and a lot of new technology. We got pretty creative with everything and had fun putting it all together.”

The tour is in support of Timberlake’s third studio album, which has a sophisticated vibe. The singer will play dates in North America, Europe, Australia and South America. Solotech was the lighting supplier for the tour.

“We did seven weeks of rehearsals,” Whitehouse reports. “The gear really got a work out – 20 hours a day.” On the tour “the whole rig is hidden behind a scenic back wall and ceiling. We have 80 Sharpys and 130 Sharpy Washes mounted on trusses, and all of them come through a grill and look amazing. When they’re not on you don’t see them at all. And when they’re on you can’t see the grill.”

Whitehouse selected Sharpys because he “needed something that was powerful, lightweight and low power. And they tick all those boxes.”

Although the tour is still in its early days the lighting designer says “everything is working great – all the Sharpys are holding up really well. The guys at A.C.T were awesome, too. A.C.T’s support has always been incredible. Day or night, we could make one call to A.C.T and get anything sorted out.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, was glad to see the Sharpys on Justin Timberlake again. “Our lights have been on Justin Timberlake before and we have worked with Mr. Whitehouse numerous times. We’re proud to be in the company of such artists once again.”
