SSL ‘Live’ Console Comes to the 2014 NAMM Show

“Initial industry response to the SSL Live console has been phenomenal… we are expecting a very busy demo schedule at the show.”

ANAHEIM – Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, is featuring Live, the company’s first console for live sound production, at the 2014 NAMM Show (Booth 6900). This will be the first west coast presentation of the console in a trade show and thus the first opportunity for hands-on demos for the professional live audio engineer community in the region.

“The initial industry response to the SSL Live console has been phenomenal,” says Piers Plaskitt, CEO of Solid State Logic, Inc. “We have been continuously busy at each event where we have shown the console, and we expect NAMM to follow the trend. It is extremely satisfying to see the responses of engineers during product demonstrations as feature after feature exceeds their expectation, and the realization grows that this console is really rather special. It is going to be another exciting show for SSL.”

About the SSL Live console:
Live is all about power and control and is perfectly suited to touring or installation, FOH or monitor systems for venues, arenas, houses of worship and concert halls. Featuring complete flexibility and an intelligent user interface, it is especially ideal for any situation in which audio quality is important.

Based on SSL’s new Tempest processing platform, Live is deployed in a uniquely versatile way. The headline numbers are as impressive as the price, with 976 inputs and outputs and 192 full processing audio paths at 96kHz. How those paths are configured is extremely flexible with power allocated to Channels, Auxes, Stem Groups and Masters, configured to suit the needs of each show. All processing is built into the console surface as well as a collection of I/O connectivity built into the frame. A full range of Stagebox I/O connects to the console via MADI, with the potential for larger systems to make use of SSL’s own Blacklight technology that carries up to 256 channels of bi-directional audio and control via a single fibre connection.

Console power is really nothing if it can’t be controlled and Live offers a truly excellent control surface. It combines a tablet-style multi-gesture touch screen with elegant hardware ergonomics, excellent visual feedback and a collection of innovative new features. It enables engineers to work exactly how they work today, whether they prefer new touch screen or classic hardware technology, or a combination of both, and offers new and better ways of doing things that will make the operator’s life less stressful and more creative.

Being an SSL, Live has legendary audio performance as standard. Impeccable audio quality is a primary design feature from studio-grade SuperAnalogue™ mic preamps, 24bit/96kHz A/D D/A conversion, to 64bit internal processing and 96kHz operation throughout. An obsession with quality also shines through an array of Live’s channel processing tools that bear the classic SSL tone, but bring a completely new level of precision, flexibility and usability. Live features an impressive collection of 30 new effects and audio analysis tools that take SSL’s acclaimed studio-grade processing and re-crafts it for live, with the additional benefit of giving the effects and analysis tools its own dedicated processing power.

As has been the case so many times in the last few decades, SSL has taken a new approach to the way professional engineers work and created an inspired console that builds upon the way things are done today while offering the potential for a new, exciting and more creative way to work tomorrow.

Live is now shipping.

DPA Microphones Camps Out at Hume Lake

California-based Christian Camp Relies on d:fine™ Miniature Headset Mics for Chapel Services, Performances and During Road Trips

HUME, CA, JANUARY 9, 2014 – Whether the staff at Hume Lake Christian Camp are performing services at home or on the road, one thing is certain, they will be using DPA Microphones’ d:fine Miniature Headset Microphones. With services held at four camps situated on 360 acres in Sequoia National Park, its campus in San Diego and its 400-acre camp in Connecticut, as well as during outreach trips to locations such as Hawaii, South Africa and Papua New Guinea, Hume Lake needs high-quality headset microphones that will stand up to the rigors of repeated use.

A popular Christian Camp, Hume Lake is not just active during the summer. Throughout the year, the facility hosts as many as 35,000 people between its 10-week winter camp, off-site trips and a variety of weekend retreats – such as those for mothers/daughters, marriages and firefighters. During Hume Lake’s 10-week summer series, as many as 3,000 students (age K-12) can be found in the four Sequoia campuses and upwards of 1,000 at its San Diego location, each week. With such a large attendance and broad spectrum of events comes speakers, services and drama performances, all of which rely on the DPA d:fine Headset Microphones and d:fine 4066 Miniature Headset Microphones.

“A typical camp chapel service at Hume Lake entails a featured speaker as well as live drama with as many as 15 mik’ed actors,” explains Rob McInteer, Hume Lake Camp technical arts director and Hume Lake Studios engineer. “A couple of our camps also have live plays that run nightly throughout the week. We usually use the wireless d:fines for these dramatic performances. Needless to say, with the environment that we’re in, the mics get handled quite a bit and we needed something that was robust and rugged, and the d:fines have held up really well.”

An audio professional first and foremost, McInteer was most impressed with the sound quality of the d:fines. “Sonically there’s no comparison between the DPA d:fine and other mics on the market,” he explains. “Because of that, there’s a whole lot less work for us. You put it on someone and it’s a real, natural sound right out of the gate. This is nice for our summer staffers, because it takes little effort for them to get an even and smooth sound from the pastor or speaker.”

In addition to the sermons, a wide variety of dramatic and musical performances, as well as audio playback, take place at the venues during the week. As the variety of people who perform during these events may not be familiar with using headset microphones, the camp needed a solution that would provide a high level of comfort.
“The one thing I’ve heard from my seasoned speakers is that the mics are comfortable,” adds McInteer. “Over the course of the year we have as many as 150 speakers come through, and everyone compliments how the mics feel. As soon as the mics are on, they fit the speakers really well and stay in place. We’ve had problems in the past with other mics slipping or rolling, or even peeling off the side of their face, but not the d:fines. They always stay in place. They’ve been a really stout and stable solution for us.”

Founded in 1946, Hume Lake Christian Camps’ Sequoia Park location is comprised of the Ponderosa, and Wild Wood high school camps, Meadow Ranch junior high camp, and Wagon Train elementary camp. Hume Lake also hosts a five-week camp at Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego and recently purchased over 400 acres of property in scenic New England, where they are building and recruiting for an east coast campus, which currently hosts as many as 200 summer students each week.

Acclaimed Film Scoring Mixer Dennis Sands Uses Focusrite’s RedNet 6 MADI-to-Dante Bridge to Connect His System

While planning for the first mix room in the world with Dolby® Atmos™ capability, Sands knew RedNet 6 – a 64-channel MADI-to-Dante bridge – would be the perfect solution.

Los Angeles, CA, January 6, 2014 – While outfitting the first dedicated film music mix room in the world with Dolby® Atmos™ capability, multi-award-winning film scoring mixer Dennis Sands needed an elegant solution to connect the multi-channel surround processor to his monitor system. When Sands and his design consultants, Ron Lagerlof of Visioneering Design and Andy Potvin from Dolby Laboratories, Inc., learned that Focusrite would shortly begin shipping the RedNet 6 MADI Bridge, they knew they had found that solution, and—sight unseen—ordered and installed one of the first units to be produced.

Sands generally records the film music projects on which he works at the major L.A. scoring stages, and in the past has brought many of those projects back to his Sound Waves SB studio in Santa Barbara, CA, about 95 miles up the coast from Los Angeles, to mix them. Then, at the end of 2012, he heard a demonstration of the Dolby Atmos multi-channel surround sound system and decided that he had to start mixing film music in the new immersive format. “I’d never heard anything like that. The clarity, transparency, the richness, the dimension, the spatial context of it all was really incredible,” he recalls. “I knew right away that this will be the way people will hear movies. Period.”

But with the installed base of Dolby Atmos systems thus far limited to re-recording stages, “I had no way of actually working in this format,” he says. Sands decided to upgrade his room with a Dolby Atmos processing system, at the same time making a significant investment in a new multi-channel speaker setup to support the format. But there was still one challenge to overcome: the outputs of the Dolby Atmos Rendering and Monitoring Unit, the system’s processing core, are on MADI optical and coaxial connectors, but the inputs to the BSS London that Sands uses to manage his monitoring set-up and switch between multi-channel formats accepts a Dante input.

When Sands and his team heard about RedNet 6, which provides a bi-directional link between any 64-channel MADI and a Dante-based audio network, they realized they had their solution: “Of all the options, the RedNet 6 was the pre-eminent choice, because it did the job elegantly, simply and at a very, very reasonable price. It was a fraction of the cost of the other options, which would have been a combination of units—and every time you start combining units there’s obviously a possibility for failure or difficulty or confusion.”

But as Sands also notes, “When we were first discussing interfacing all this technology into my studio the RedNet 6 wasn’t available yet,” so the unit they purchased would be the first unit they would even see. As it turned out, the team’s faith in the Focusrite brand and the reputation the company has earned as a manufacturer of world-class analog and digital audio equipment over the past three decades proved to be completely justified. “I have unit number one,” he reports. “Ron picked it up from GC Pro, brought it in, connected it, and it worked beautifully. It’s the perfect device for the application. It’s just this great-looking single rack space box that sits in my rack and just cruises along. It’s an absolutely integral part of the signal chain.”

Thanks to the Dante audio network’s plug-and-play capability, the RedNet 6 was very easy to install. “There were no issues at all,” says Sands. “There was no configuration, there was no learning timeframe; it just plugged in and worked. It did everything we hoped it would do.”

The Cat 6 cabling also made installation a breeze. “It’s a single line. It’s all just elegant, simple and easy to deal with. And Cat 6 is relatively cheap: it’s one of the great things about the electronics world, really. Quality is increasing, the price is decreasing—and this fits right into that,” says Sands.

“Without the RedNet 6, I wouldn’t be on the air with Atmos,” he says. “Or, at least, it would have been a lot more complex and a lot more expensive.”

Sands has worked on nearly 300 feature films as a music scoring mixer, plus over two dozen more as a re-recording mixer, earning four OSCAR® nominations — for The Polar Express, Cast Away, Contact and Forrest Gump — and winning two CAS Awards, including one for Lifetime Achievement, plus a Golden Reel in the process. But as Sands comments, “I consider myself an audio artist, specializing in music.” Over the years, mixing music releases and for television, he has also collected GRAMMY® and Primetime EMMY® Awards.

David Wiener Ventures (DWV) Orchestrates Sale of Soundsphere to MSE Audio

— DWV’s industry expertise leads to successful sale of historic speaker manufacturer —

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 2, 2013 —The Mergers & Acquisitions arm of David Wiener Ventures (DWV) has helped broker a successful acquisition in the audio industry: after more than 25 years as a leader in omni-directional speakers for commercial installation applications, Stratford, Connecticut-based industry innovator Soundsphere has been acquired by MSE Audio of Kansas City. MSE, known for its wide variety of commercial and consumer-based audio brands, led by speaker giant SoundTube Entertainment, has acquired Soundsphere in an all-cash transaction. David Wiener Ventures was chosen to orchestrate the acquisition, based on DWV Chairman David Wiener’s business acumen and extensive knowledge of the audio industry.

In describing the acquisition, David Wiener stated, “The integration of Soundsphere into MSE’s existing infrastructure will provide even greater sales and marketing opportunities along with immediate benefits for distribution, delivery and support. This is a true win-win for both parties, and the result will be a more powerful position and future for parent company MSE and the Soundsphere brand. DWV is proud of our two deals for MSE in the past six months.”

David Wiener – known for driving multiple businesses in the audio and music world, including founding SoundTube Entertainment, partnering with Ferrari of Italy on a line of Ferrari-branded high-end audio products, and creating DWV Entertainment, which owns pro audio brand Aphex – has created the Mergers & Acquisitions arm of DWV to assist companies with sales and acquisitions. The DWV organization’s 30 years of product and technology development, engineering, design, manufacturing and marketing give it unique capabilities to assist and drive deals in ways that typical M&A consultants cannot. Real-world experience and a wide variety of business ventures, spanning audio, automotive, aircraft, fashion, furnishings and digital technologies, allow DWV to ask the right questions and specify operational, marketing, positioning and production improvements, giving buyers greater value as they consider and execute acquisitions. At the same time, DWV provides sellers with true understanding of their needs and desires, given DWV’s experience developing, selling and acquiring its own brands.

“David Wiener did an amazing job, managing the entire process for both our company and MSE,” stated Soundsphere General Manager Pete Hamilton. “From early stage due diligence, planning and negotiations, to bringing both parties together in a positive and productive way, all in an unusually short period of time. What David and DWV did was truly impressive. No wonder Ferrari wanted to work with them.”

MSE CEO Chris Combest stated, “David has helped us grow our business in a variety of ways, most recently with two successful acquisitions. I am very pleased with the management and coordination DWV provides, not to mention the added value that makes these deals work.”

BenQ Adds New BE Light, Compasso and Hatha LED Lighting Fixtures to QisDesign Luxury Line

Premium LED Lamps Blend Sophisticated Design and Innovative Technology to Provide Sensory-Rich Experiences

LAS VEGAS, 2014 International CES — Jan. 7, 2014 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of digital lifestyle innovations, announced today the addition of three new elegant designs to its QisDesign brand of premium LED lighting fixtures. The BE Light, now available in stylish black, and the entirely new Compasso and Hatha bring contemporary designs inspired by the world around them to deliver sensory-rich lighting experiences with interactive features that brighten any environment.

“BenQ’s new QisDesign premium light fixtures bring a new level of sophistication to LED lighting,” said Bob Wudeck, Associate Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at BenQ America Corp. “The collection’s newest additions blend form and function by combining innovative LED technology with inspired designs. They are made to complement any setting, stimulate the imagination, and provide significant energy savings to users.”

The entire QisDesign collection offers table, floor, wall, and suspension lamps that mimic the real-life wonder of a variety of life forms. The new models include:

BE Light: With its clever hinge design, the BE Light can be extended or folded to make efficient use of desk or floor space. The LED lamp’s refined new metallic black finish further gives the light a stylish and sophisticated look. By capturing the inspiration from origami, the ancient art of folding flat sheets of paper into sculpted three-dimensional forms, the BE Light desk lamp provides both adjustable desk lighting and the ability to be contracted into a flat, seamless surface of only 0.75 inches, keeping desks and tables spacious and clutter-free. As with BenQ’s entire line of QisDesign lamps, the BE Light uses light guide technology to evenly distribute its warm, white LED light without the slightest amount of glare from its light source. To adjust brightness and light intensity, users simply place their finger on the touch-sensitive power key, which automatically fades-in or dims down the light to provide just the right glow for any lighting situation. Also available as a floor lamp, BenQ’s BE Light features SMT LEDs for longer lasting brightness than regular LED light sources. Available now, the BE Light Table Lamp retails for $550, while the BE Light Floor Lamp has an MSRP of $980.

Compasso: Inspired by the clear-cut precision of a geometry compass, the Compasso Light has been engineered for flexibility to allow users to customize the warm white LED light using the lamp’s touch dimmer switch. For further lighting comfort, Compasso’s sliding track along the lamp’s arm lets consumers adjust the lamp to any height or placement preference — even 360 degrees via the unit’s swivel base. Constructed using a combination of rubber, aluminum, zinc alloy, and LED light guide technology, the Compasso Light produces an even distribution of abundant light while consuming a maximum of only 12W of power. The result is a mixture of soft and ample light for illuminating any living space or work environment without compromising the lifestyle of design and energy-conscious consumers. The Compasso is available now at an MSRP of $680.

Hatha: With a flexible spine embedded into a rubber lamp shell, the new Hatha Light mimics the bend of the human body, allowing users to freely adjust the lamp to different angles and heights to meet their specific needs. Adopted with high power LEDs and lens design, the Hatha Light delivers sufficient brightness for reading use, and offers high light efficiency. The Hatha Light is available and retails for $450.

BenQ Takes Entertainment and Portability to a Whole New Level With New GP20 Ultra-Lite LED Projector

For the Home or Office, HD-Ready Projector Supports MHL-Equipped Smart Devices for Optimized Delivery of Mobile Entertainment

LAS VEGAS, 2014 International CES — Jan. 7, 2014 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of visual display solutions, today unveiled the latest addition to its popular mini projector series: the BenQ Ultra-Lite GP20. Designed to provide enjoyment anywhere in the home or enhance presentations in the office, the easy-to-use, portable GP20 brings higher brightness and Colorific(TM) image quality to the mini projector series. In addition, it introduces powerful features such as mobile high-definition link (MHL) connectivity and PC-less projection.

Building on the success of the GP2 mini projector, the GP20 offers the perfect balance of size and performance. While larger than the palm-sized GP2, the 720p GP20 Projector maintains its portability while offering a higher brightness of 500 ANSI lumens and native WXGA (1280×800) resolution, with support for resolutions up to UXGA (1600×1200). With new features including mirroring for MHL-equipped devices, the GP20 enables easy notebook PC, cable, console gaming, or smart device connection for transferring small-screen content directly to the projector from any portable device.

In addition, the GP20 offers simple plug-and-play and wireless streaming to allow users to share HD-quality presentations, movies, videos, photos, and games on a display up to 240 inches. For a big viewing experience in tiny spaces, the GP20 Projector provides a display of 60 inches at distances down to 1.5 meters. Audio can be played through the unit’s two built-in 3-W SRS speakers or through external speakers via the Audio Out port.

The GP20 Projector is packed with multimedia connectivity including USB and SD card viewers and a document viewer for Microsoft(R) Office and PDF documents. A plug-and-play USB feature allows for a PC-less experience. Users simply save content to a USB thumb drive, plug the drive into the projector, and project the content without the need for a PC or file conversion. In addition, a USB file transfer function lets users store their multimedia files to the unit’s 2GB on-board memory.

Based on high-efficiency 3LED illumination and DLP(R) projection technology, the GP20 projector is designed to produce exceptional picture quality, providing users with clearer, brighter, and more vivid Colorific images without relying on traditional projection lamps. This allows users to enjoy the ultra-lite projector without worrying about issues such as decreasing brightness, color fading, or the expense of lamp replacement.

“The GP20 Projector brings a host of new capabilities for an exceptional viewing experience, whether you are entertaining the family at home or making a presentation in the office,” said Bob Wudeck, Associate Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at BenQ America Corp. “In addition to its portability and increased brightness, the ultra-lite projector offers an intuitive interface and the ability to enjoy cloud-based content with great ease. All of this is complemented by an elegant design and its new remote simplifies the control experience.”

The BenQ Ultra-Lite GP20 is available now at an MSRP of $1,099. Information on the GP20 and the full line of BenQ products is available at http://www.BenQ.com.
