SMPTE Updates SMPTE-TT Standard and Recommended Practices to Assure Interoperability

Update to 2010 Versions of SMPTE-TT Documents Includes Essential Corrections and Clarification, Adds New RP for CEA-708 Mapping

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Jan. 14, 2014 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced that the standards and recommended practices governing the SMPTE Timed Text (SMPTE-TT) caption format have been updated with critical corrections and edits that improve clarity and assure interoperability. SMPTE also has released a new recommended practice that addresses Consumer Electronics Association 708 (CEA-708) mapping.

“The updates to ST 2052-1 and RP 2052-10 correct and clarify text that could potentially lead to interoperability issues,” said Peter Symes, director of standards and engineering at SMPTE. “It is important that anyone using the 2010 versions of these documents be aware of these changes to SMPTE-TT.”

Adopted by the FCC as a “safe harbor interchange and delivery format,” the SMPTE-TT standard provides a means by which closed-captioning may be made available to the greatest number of media consumers. The updated SMPTE-TT documents, available for free at www.smpte.org/standards as a public service, facilitate compliance with the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (CVAA) that the FCC began implementing on Jan. 1, 2014.

For previously broadcast over-the-air programming, the CVAA mandates that consumers have access to closed captions via almost every type of device — including a smartphone, tablet, personal computer, and television set-top box — that is capable of receiving or playing back video programming. This mandate affects TV stations, cable systems, broadcast and cable networks, streaming online video services, and virtually every other professional video program producer that makes television programming available online.

SMPTE ST 2052-1, the standard governing SMPTE-TT, has been updated to allow tunneled data to be located in places other than in the head of the document and to include recommendations about timebase. Updates to SMPTE RP 2052-10, the recommended practice that addresses CEA-608 mapping for conversion to SMPTE-TT, include the addition of an extensive example of real-world caption translation and clarification of the XDS metadata. In both documents, XML schema has been separated from prose, which itself has been improved and made more precise.

The new document in the SMPTE-TT family is RP 2052-11, the recommended practice that specifies mapping of the enhanced captioning data defined by CEA-708 into the SMPTE-TT format.

Further information about SMPTE and the SMPTE-TT standard is available at www.smpte.org.

NUGEN Audio Launches Stereopack

Complete Toolset for Stereo Image Enhancement and Manipulation

LEEDS, U.K. — Jan. 14, 2014 — NUGEN Audio, creator of intuitive tools for audio professionals, today announced the launch of Stereopack, a complete toolset for stereo image enhancement and manipulation including expansion, positioning, and low-frequency control. Stereopack is designed to offer maximum flexibility in a highly accessible and configurable combination of powerful tools.

“Stereopack gives audio professionals everything they need to create the big sound they’re striving for, rapidly and intuitively,” said Jon Schorah, creative director, NUGEN Audio. “They can gain absolute control of their stereo panorama with no unwanted artifacts and the assurance of superb mono compatibility, without interrupting the flow of their creative process.”

With Stereopack, users can naturally widen or reduce the stereo image, focus and define low frequencies, and move specific captured spectra within the stereo soundfield. Each Stereopack component integrates advanced audio analysis feedback directly into the user interface, delivering intuitive control of all main parameters with clear and immediate dynamic feedback. All three plug-ins are highly mono-compatible, using unique algorithms that maintain the original character of the source audio without introducing any strange phase, reverb, or delay-related artifacts. Each tool is compatible with 64-bit OSX, AAX (32- and 64-bit), and the latest VST3 standards.

One component of Stereopack, Stereoizer, is a high-specification stereo image manipulation tool suitable for natural expansion, reduction, and introduction of stereo width at any stage of the audio production process. Developed for and tested by professional audio engineers, Stereoizer adds natural-sounding width and depth to any mono or stereo audio recording, leaving the inherent character of the original source intact.

Another Stereopack tool is the Monofilter plug-in, which enables users to align and balance low frequencies with a minimum of effort to create solid, natural-sounding bass. With Monofilter, users can define the center of the bass, which can be easily lost through stereo effects processing, synth sound generation, unwanted phase inconsistencies, and live recording mic bleed. The plug-in provides clear control over stereo spread, transition, and phase alignment, with a unique interface that delivers clear and exacting visual feedback. The result is a bass sound that is more focused and better defined.

The third tool in the Stereopack bundle is Stereoplacer, an advanced fine-tune parametric balancing control tool that allows users to tune each band to specific frequencies and move the frequency content around in the stereo sound stage. Stereoplacer maintains the character of the original sounds while the user chooses the position, providing fully adjustable curves (bell, high and low shelving, and additional linked-harmonic overtones). These characteristics enable the user to redistribute stereo information with subtlety or powerfully correct signals — even moving hard-panned frequencies from one side to the other — without affecting the overall level balance of the material.

New WohlerDPP, Powered by RadiantGrid(TM), Enables Rapid Repackaging of File-Based Media for Delivery to U.K. Broadcasters

New WohlerDPP, Powered by RadiantGrid(TM), Enables Rapid Repackaging of File-Based Media for Delivery to U.K. Broadcasters

Wohler Solution Is First to Address Full DPP Delivery Workflow

SAN FRANCISCO — Jan. 14, 2014 — Addressing plans by major U.K. broadcasters to require that file-based deliverables be compliant with the new Digital Production Partnership (DPP) standard, Wohler Technologies today announced the release of WohlerDPP, powered by RadiantGrid(TM). Marking the first in a series of new products, this turnkey solution leverages Wohler’s RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform(TM) to accelerate repackaging and delivery of file-based content in the AS-11 UKDPP file format specified by the DPP standard.

“Within less than a year, postproduction houses and other media facilities across the world who deliver programming to leading U.K. broadcasters will be required to package file-based content in accordance with DPP specifications,” said Craig Newbury, vice president of sales for the Wohler RadiantGrid business line. “As this requirement becomes a reality, WohlerDPP is the first product to streamline the entire DPP delivery workflow. By enabling and automating DPP packaging and compliance assurance, this powerful solution dramatically increases efficiency, saves our customers money, and reduces errors in the provision of DPP deliverables.”

The DPP is an initiative formed jointly by the U.K.’s public service broadcasters to help producers and broadcasters maximize the potential benefits of digital television production. The DPP leads the standardization of technical and metadata requirements within the U.K. broadcast industry to ensure that digital video content can be distributed easily and cost-effectively between content providers and content broadcasters.

By October 2014, broadcasters will require use of the group’s standard for file-based deliverables, and WohlerDPP will make it easy for content creators to get on board. The solution offers an intuitive, user-driven, data-driven interface for submitting details of the DPP deliverable — including source assets, segment timecodes, gamut legalization, loudness processing, and descriptive metadata. It then performs all asset preparation, ident rendering, assembly, transcoding, and metadata insertion required to produce a fully prepared AS-11 UKDPP MXF file. WohlerDPP can also create broadcaster-specific “sidecar” metadata files as required.

WohlerDPP includes the new RadiantGrid hardware platform, as well as the DPP Expert System(TM) interface, preconfigured DPP compliance and transcoding profiles, and preconfigured DPP-compliant lineup and slate assets.

Further information about the RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform and other RadiantGrid solutions is available at www.wohler.com. Details about the WohlerDPP product can be found at www.deliverdpp.com.

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour Rolls Cross Country With Clay Paky, MDG and grandMA2 Gear

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Mannheim Steamroller. The distinctive ensemble is marking the 29th anniversary of its Christmas concert tours with a multimedia display featuring a light show and big-screen images and videos synchronized with their music. Lighting designer Richard Jackson has included Clay Paky Sharpy Washes in his rig for the first time along with an MDG Atmosphere hazer and grandMA2 Light console. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of all of those brands in North America.

Mannheim Steamroller debuted their first Christmas album in 1984 combining the group’s signature mix of baroque instruments and rock ‘n roll beats to give a fresh twist to holiday classics. This year two tours of six-member ensembles are playing 80 dates on a Christmas tour running from mid-November to late December.

“Mannheim Steamroller is the longest-running, best-selling Christmas show of all time,” declares Jackson, who has been the tour’s lighting designer for the last five years. “I design the show with the production manager and lighting director for the other tour. I go out with one of the tours and do all the programming as well.”

This year Jackson opted for 16 Sharpy Washes, from long-time Omaha-based equipment supplier TMS, as his primary wash units. “Thanks to the versatility of the light, they have become workhorses,” he says. “We have ten in the air and six on the ground. They do a lot of graphical stuff, high-beam stuff. I can go from a wide wash with great smooth coverage from ten of them then tighten them up and get nice beamy graphical stuff.

“What I really like about them is that they work great in the range of venues we play – from a small place with low trim to a big college auditorium or arena,” says Jackson. “I also like their speed – not just movement speed but the ability to change from a color wheel effect to a color mix wash almost instantly. They have also lowered my power consumption, which is I great. I think they’re fantastic!”

Controlling the lights is a grandMA2 light, Jackson’s “console of choice.” A veteran grandMA user, he made the switch to grandMA2 Light on last year’s tour. “The power of the desk is great, and the software is extremely intuitive and very easy to use,” he says. “We can create a lot of things a lot faster; I can program complicated things and it’s always rock solid.”

Jackson, who is president of Last Minute Lighting, LLC, took advantage of running grandMA 3D on his own command wing to do previs for the tour. “grandMA 3D is a major tool, an absolutely wonderful tool that I use for all my jobs,” he says. “I did previs at home on my command wing to start programming, cloning fixtures and solving problems. It was great to get a feel for the desk. Then I spent a week at TMS while the crews were prepping the system to wrap up previs on the console we took on the road.”

Also on the tour is an MDG Atmosphere hazer, which Jackson calls “TMS’s go-to hazer – and my favorite hazer as well. I love that we can get it every year. It’s quiet, which is very important. And there’s no mess with it. I don’t get any complaints about using oily equipment. It’s really nice how it creates haze that hangs in the air, too. It lasts a lot longer than haze manufactured by other hazers. I can fill the room up, turn off the machine and still have haze in the air for an hour or more.”

Jackson seems to have struck just the right note for the Christmas tour with his trio of Clay Paky, MDG and grandMA equipment. “All the gear has performed flawlessly even in the extreme temperature changes we experience,” he reports.

The LDs for the two tours are Richard Jackson and Patrick Haines and the lighting techs are Justin Borgelt, Tony Gibson and Andrew Shaw.
