Bexel Heads Home for FOX Sports 1 Remote Studio Kits

Self-contained Broadcast Units Bring FOX Sports 1 Talent to Air

(BURBANK,CA) Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, recently built, tested, shipped, and installed 16 self-contained, crewless home studios for some of FOX Sports 1′s top talent. The innovative systems are permanently installed in the analysts’ homes, allowing them to go on air immediately when something pertaining to their specialty occurs.

“We had less than 30 days to procure, build, test and distribute all 16 systems, but we were more than ready for the challenge,” said Senior Vice President of Bexel ESS Scott Nardelli. “We were able to manage logistics and get the gear needed, where they needed it. From staging the units in various holding locations around the country before deployment, to installing the bonded T1s from the point of presence to the interior of the homes, to running the cables in a way that hid them from view and worked within the existing décor and framework of the houses, our team delivered at every step in the process.”

Since the network’s August launch, the in-home location segments have become staples of FOX SPORTS LIVE, FOX FOOTBALL DAILY and other FOX Sports 1 programming. Brian Billick in Queenstown, Md., Ken Rosenthal in New York, N.Y., Mike Garafolo in Hoboken, N.J., Jon Paul Morosi in Ann Arbor, Mich., Reid Forgrave in Des Moines, Iowa, and Alex Marvez in Miami, Fla., are among the analysts who have been prominently featured from the new installations. FOX Sports 1 simply connects into any of the in-home studios via a bonded T1 pair, and goes live with HD quality video.

The systems include AW-HE60SN Panasonic cameras that can be manned remotely from the FOX Sports 1 control room in Los Angeles, allowing them to pan, tilt, zoom or adjust color and saturation. Litepanels 1×1 Bi-Color panels were chosen to provide key light, fill light, and back light on stands, and can also be controlled remotely. The backdrops, approximately 6-by-6 feet and featuring the FOX Sports 1 logo, are customized to the individual home locations. Beyond the standard backdrops are smaller pull-up devices, and in one case, a motorized unit that comes down from the ceiling.

Rack mounted cases, approximately 48-by-24-by-30 inches, are at the core of the systems. Their contents include a UPS that controls power, an IP Power Switch which allows the system to be turned on and off remotely from Los Angeles, a network switch that keeps the circuit open, a Haivision Mako encoder, and audio and video support that provides the IFB and camera feeds.

While most functions of the in-home studios are controlled remotely, the units were designed to make it easy for the on-location users to complete the tasks they do have to perform. “We used a very straight forward audio system, so the talent doesn’t really have to do anything beyond plugging in their microphone,” adds Nardelli. “They also have a volume control for their earpiece right on the desk, so they can control the volume of the IFB easily, without having to go to the rack and figure out which knob to turn. We worked closely with the FOX team to create clear and concise ‘cheat sheets’ for the talent, so they’d be comfortable with the technology around them.”

AKD Luxury Cars Mall is using 350 BrightSign players to power the 700 screens that set the tone at its brand new car dealership in Shenzhen, China’s largest vehicle showroom.

Opened in 2013, the 1.29M-square foot AKD Luxury Cars Mall accommodates 3,000 luxury vehicles and is a magnet for car enthusiasts amongst China’s fast-growing affluent professional community. It specializes in high-end used cars, including exclusive marques like Bentley and Lamborghini, as well as luxury brands such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Land Rover and Audi.

The new AKD Luxury Cars Mall features 700 42” displays fitted to the front and back of each pillar on every floor of the showroom. The screens are powered by 350 BrightSign players, each driving two screens via a 1×2 HDMI splitter. Each floor plays its own content, which is identical on each screen on that floor. Synchronization between the screens is flawless – every screen shows the same video at exactly the same time, and is controlled and synchronized through the showroom Intranet and BrightAuthor software. ISE Line-up To Feature Presentation by FSR’s Jon Melchin

Melchin to Share Expert Insight on Benefits of Building Information Modeling

Woodland Park, NJ – Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), the world’s best attended tradeshow for the professional AV and electronic systems industry, will feature a comprehensive educational agenda including a presentation by Jon Melchin, FSR Inc.’s Director of Architectural Development. World’s First PCIe(R) Card Expansion Systems With Thunderbolt 2

IRVINE, Calif. — Jan. 16, 2014 — Sonnet Technologies today announced that its Echo(TM) Express III-D (desktop), Echo Express III-R (rackmount), and Echo Express SE II (desktop) Thunderbolt(TM)-to-PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) card expansion chassis are the first devices of their kind to ship with 20 Gb/sec Thunderbolt 2 interfaces. These models, which began shipping this week, are the newest members of Sonnet’s award-winning Echo Express family of expansion products that enable any Mac(R) computer equipped with Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt ports to interface with a wide variety of high-performance PCIe cards originally designed only for use in desktop computers.

The Echo Express III-D, Echo Express III-R, and Echo Express SE II incorporate ultra-fast Thunderbolt 2 technology, which delivers twice the throughput of 10 Gb/sec Thunderbolt and provides sufficient bandwidth to support many of the highest performance and most demanding PCIe cards. The new expansion chassis support every kind of Thunderbolt-compatible PCIe card available — enabling the use of professional video capture, audio interface, 16Gb and 8Gb Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, SAS and SATA HBA, and RAID controller cards with Thunderbolt-enabled iMac(R), Mac mini, Mac Pro(R), MacBook Air(R), and MacBook Pro(R) computers. Designed for users needing an optimum solution for connecting three PCIe cards to their computers, both the Echo Express III-D and Echo Express III-R provide one x16 and two x8 PCIe slots to support three full-length, full-height, single-width PCIe cards. Both chassis feature a built-in universal 300W power supply with a 75W auxiliary power connector to support PCIe cards with higher power requirements. In addition, the systems integrate two large ultra-quiet, temperature-controlled cooling fans to enable their use in noise-sensitive environments. The companion Echo Express III-R Mobile Rack Kit enables users to install one or two mobile rack-form-factor devices inside the Echo Express III-R chassis. Peripherals such as LTO tape drives, 2.5-inch SSD or HDD drives, 3.5-inch drives, Blu-ray(TM) burners, and memory card readers can be installed into the kit and connected to the PCIe cards installed in the chassis, saving rack space for other equipment.

The Echo Express SE II was designed for users needing a simple way to connect two adapter cards to their computers, and it supports all but long Thunderbolt-compatible PCIe cards. Weighing just 3.7 pounds and measuring only 6.5 inches wide by 11 inches long by 4.6 inches tall, the Echo Express SE II is compact and lightweight, and its rugged aluminum case provides excellent protection for the cards. The new chassis supports two half-length (up to 7.75 inches long), full-height PCIe 2.0 x8 cards and provides an additional space for a daughter card. Some specialty cards, such as RME’s HDSPe MADI FX card, Blackmagic Design’s DeckLink 4K Extreme, and the Lynx Studio Technology AES16e-50, include a daughter card that mates with and provides additional external connections to the main card. The Echo Express SE II provides the slot space and mounting support for an adjacent daughter card without sacrificing an entire PCIe slot.

How Sweet It Is! New Live Music Venue SRB Brooklyn Is Equipped With HARMAN Professional Audio System

BROOKLYN, New York — Brooklyn, the music-soaked borough that brought us Barbra Streisand, Foxy Brown, Barry Manilow, Jay-Z and many others now boasts SRB Brooklyn, a brand-new venue dedicated to live music, dancing and bringing back the energy of the clubs from the ‘60s and ‘70s. “SRB” stands for Soul, Rhythm and Blues, all of which can be heard with the help of SRB Brooklyn’s HARMAN Professional sound system featuring AKG, Crown, dbx, JBL and Soundcraft components.

“When we bid on the project, the owner of SRB Brooklyn told us he wanted to cater to all types of music and bring in national acts, and that he wanted a top-quality sound system,” said Jeff Kwan, Vice President of New York sound contractor Canal Sound and Light. “He specifically said, ‘I want the best speakers in tour sound for my club,’ so we immediately thought of JBL VERTEC® and recommended a HARMAN Professional system as the way to go for the 500-person room.”

“The building is a converted warehouse, so we had some architectural constraints,” Kwan continued. “It’s a long room but has a low ceiling so flying the main speakers was challenging. We went with two ground stacks of four VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements per side. However, the VT4888’s aren’t just plopped on the ground—they’re placed in a ‘notch’ in each wall on either side of the stage that’s about 10 feet high, so we get the sonic and coverage advantages of raising them off the ground. We also installed three JBL ASB7128 subwoofers under the stage—the ASB7128 is specifically designed to work well either ground-stacked or flown.”

A variety of additional JBL loudspeakers round out the system. Eight VRX915M and two PRX612M floor monitors are deployed onstage and two ASB7118 subwoofers are used for drum fill. Four STX835 loudspeakers and two ASB7128 subs are located at the rear of the club while four AC28/26 compact loudspeakers and one AM7212/00 provide additional fill throughout the venue.

“We installed Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers to drive the VT4888’s, ASB7128 subs and STX835 rear loudspeakers, and Crown XTi Series amps for the stage monitors and other fill loudspeakers. The I-Tech HD amps’ preset tunings and adjustable built-in DSP make them the perfect match for the bigger JBL loudspeakers, while the XTi amps offer a good combination of price and performance.” A dbx DriveRack 4800 Loudspeaker Management System provides speaker processing and control.

A variety of AKG mics fill out the HARMAN system, including D7 vocal mics, C3000, C451B and C535EB vocal and instrument condenser mics, C518M and D112 drum and bass drum mics, D40 instrument mics and a P2 low-pitched instrument/bass drum mic. In addition the stage is equipped with 20 BSS AR-133 active direct boxes.

There were challenges during the installation. “As it turned out the original design of the stage did not provide enough acoustical treatment for the subwoofers,” Kwan noted. “When we first put the system through its paces the subs really shook the stage. We had to add sand and concrete to the stage to eliminate the shaking and noise and direct the low-frequency energy forward towards the audience.”

The result was worth it: “The venue’s management wanted SRB Brooklyn to be a music venue that rivals any place in Manhattan. He definitely accomplished that. It’s an unpretentious place where people can really enjoy themselves and appreciate the best audio system in Brooklyn.”
