Christie Display Technology Used at the Opening of Lusofonia Games 2014

The stunning visuals by award-winning projection designer and his team, BARTKRESA Design Inc., were displayed using Christie®’s compact, purpose-built projectors. This visual experience enthralled thousands of spectators who have gathered in Goa, India for the 3rd edition of the Lusofonia Games. The sporting event, which takes place January 18-29, features 40 Christie Roadster S+20K, Roadster S+22K-J and Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP® projectors at the opening ceremony that includes an impressive projection mapping show.

Audio Design, Christie’s local partner that is fully responsible for the Games’ visual display, collaborated with world-renowned projection designer BARTKRESA Design Inc. to create the stunning and engaging visual spectacle. The Christie projectors are installed strategically in six towers around the 22,000-seat Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – the venue of the opening ceremony – and they have been accurately calibrated for maximum projection coverage and seamless edge blending onto the field during the event.

“We’re thrilled that Christie’s high performance projectors are being deployed at the Lusofonia Games for the first time and we’re confident that the entire show will be a spectacular visual feast,” said Navneet Wadhwa, managing director, Audio Design.

Vijay Sabhlok, director, Video Design, added, “The opening ceremony of the Games will be the biggest projection event that has ever been staged in India. This beats our very own best of 30 projectors used previously for the Umaid Bhawan projection mapping project.”

“The Lusofonia Games is a prestigious international sporting event and we’re delighted to be in the beautiful city of Goa to create stunning visuals that immerse and transport viewers on a journey of sporting excellence,” said Kresa. “We’ve worked very closely with the show director of the opening ceremony to bring out the energy and vibrancy of this event to the whole world.”

The performances at the opening ceremony encompass the spirit of “unity and pride”, which are the key elements of the Games, as well as the rich history and heritage of Indian and Goan culture that are celebrated through the theme “Panchatattva” – the five elements of nature comprising fire, water, earth, air and ether.

Keshav Chandra, CEO, Lusofonia Games, said, “This spectacular launch is a fitting precursor to this international sporting event. Goa has geared up to host athletes from the participating countries and we are very happy and proud to host this exciting event.”

Widely referred to as the Portuguese version of the British Commonwealth Games, the Lusofonia Games is organized by the Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committee (ACOLOP). It involves athletes and officials from 12 Portuguese-speaking countries, formerly ruled by Portugal. Among the countries taking part in the 12-day tournament are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macau (China), Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe. Equatorial Guinea, India and Sri Lanka are associate members of the Games.

“It’s a great honor for us to be part of this major sports event for the first time and we’re delighted and proud that our high performance projectors are used in the grand opening ceremony to kick-start the Games in a big way,” said Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific. “It’s also wonderful to see thousands of spectators wowed by the awesome visuals that have definitely made the event even more memorable.”

SMPTE to Offer CCNA Security Along With Full Slate of CCNA Routing and Switching Courses in 2014

Intensive Courses Offer Unique Opportunity to Learn How to Address Critical Networking Security Concerns

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Jan. 21, 2014 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced the addition of CCNA Security to the Society’s current roster of Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) virtual course offerings. The SMPTE Professional Development Academy offers this intensive 12-week virtual course along with the four CCNA Routing and Switching courses — Introduction to Networks (CCNA1), Routing and Switching Essentials (CCNA2), Scaling Networks (CCNA3), and Connecting Networks (CCNA4) — through the SMPTE Virtual Classroom.

“In addition to the CCNA Security course, SMPTE offers all four CCNA Routing and Switching courses to help meet the educational needs of industry professionals as their work becomes ever more network-focused,” said Robert Seidel, executive vice president at SMPTE and vice president of engineering and advanced technology at CBS Television Network. “Whatever their experience and background, engineers today must understand current concepts and practices such as cloud-based computing, the use of Internet Protocol (IP) and internetworking technologies, and infrastructure considerations in the modern media facility. To this end, SMPTE CCNA courses cover the fundamentals of network administration and internetworking concepts, as well as the security concepts that are now essential engineering knowledge.”

The CCNA Security course now being offered by SMPTE provides a next step for individuals who want to enhance their CCNA-level skill set and to help meet the growing demand for network professionals. The curriculum provides an introduction to the core security concepts and skills needed for the installation, troubleshooting, and monitoring of network devices to maintain the integrity, confidentiality, availability, and overall security of data and devices. CCNA1 and CCNA2 are prerequisites for this course.

Each CCNA Routing and Switching course introduced for 2014 has been extended from nine to 12 weeks to help participants better balance professional, personal, and now educational commitments. Covering more advanced, comprehensive, and practical information earlier in the CCNA program assures that course participants are able to effectively apply advanced concepts in the workplace sooner. This real-world practical perspective is supported through the extensive use of Cisco’s Packet Tracer network simulation program during all CCNA courses.

Individuals who completed the previous CCNA Exploration courses and register for subsequent CCNA courses through SMPTE will gain free access to the supplemental self-paced materials developed by Cisco to address any differences between the old and new programs. This allows course participants to better prepare for Cisco’s CCENT and CCNA Routing and Switching Certification Exams, if certification is a goal.

“SMPTE’s CCNA course offerings give broadcast engineers and other professionals in motion imaging engineering a highly valuable and unique educational opportunity: to join other media industry professionals in a course of study that provides comprehensive coverage of crucial networking concepts and principles,” added Seidel. “The positive feedback we’ve received about these courses has been tremendous, and I encourage all industry executives and engineers who are responsible for media production, postproduction, or media engineering functions to consider this program for their technical and engineering staff members and even for themselves.”

These SMPTE Virtual Classroom programs are blended-learning courses utilizing a “flipped classroom” education model. In other words, participants spend time on independent study and ask questions via the virtual classroom’s online discussion forum, and then participate in live weekly instructor coaching sessions where the instructor answers questions and assists with clarifying more complex topics and activities in real-time. This approach allows for maximum flexibility and more effective use of the participant’s time with the instructor. In contrast to a self-paced program, each course has a specific start date, specific stop date, and recommended learning goals to help participants plan their studies and stay on track. Successful completion of these intensive courses is determined by completing graded Packet Tracer internetworking activities, chapter assessments, and a final online examination.

Class sizes for the SMPTE CCNA courses are kept small to allow instructors to provide individual attention to participants. Early registration is strongly encouraged, as space is limited. SMPTE members enjoy discounted pricing. When combined with other benefits of SMPTE membership, such as free monthly webcasts and discounts on key industry events, the savings on SMPTE CCNA courses can easily justify joining the Society.

Further information about SMPTE CCNA courses is online at www.smpte.org/education/courses. More information about SMPTE is available at www.smpte.org.

Sennheiser to Demonstrate its Unique Laser Drum Microphone Concept at 2014 NAMM Show

Daily Demonstrations Will Feature Concept Microphone Developed by Sennheiser Technology and Innovation Lab, San Francisco

Anaheim, CA – January 21, 2014: Audio specialist Sennheiser (Hall A, Booth 6577) announced that it will exhibit an advanced concept microphone at the 2014 NAMM Show, which is designed to improve drum sound pick-up. The concept, developed by Sennheiser’s Technology and Innovation Lab in San Francisco, is unique and based on a recording technology supported by lasers.

In the past, Sennheiser has used exhibitions such as the NAMM Show as sounding boards to gain insight and feedback on its latest developments in its Pursuit of Perfect Sound. The new laser drum concept will be demonstrated on the Sennheiser stage to visualize the idea.

Typically, many microphones are used to capture the sound of a drum kit. However, each single microphone usually captures many other sounds in addition to its intended source. This is why many engineers have used gating techniques to keep the sonic image focused and avoid what is commonly referred to as comb filtering: a series of delayed signals that create sonic interference.

Rather than relying soley on dynamics processing, Sennheiser’s laser drum microphone concept uses laser vibrometers to measure the vibration of the drum head. Instead of being triggered by acoustic waves, the gates for each drum are triggered using the laser beam which picks up the visual vibration of the drum head. This equates to less bleed across the pieces of the entire kit, and a more focused overall drum sound.

To experience Sennheiser’s unique laser drum microphone concept in person, please visit the Sennheiser booth between Thursday, January 23rd and Saturday, January 26th at 11:15 a.m., 1:50 p.m. or 4:50 p.m.

Montreux Jazz Festival and Montreux Music & Convention Centre Rely on Riedel MediorNet

WUPPERTAL, Germany — Jan. 21, 2014 — Riedel Communications, the leading provider of real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that the Montreux Music & Convention Centre (2m2c) used a Riedel MediorNet video and data signal transport network solution during the 47th Montreux Jazz Festival, the second largest annual jazz festival in the world. The organizers used the Riedel system to distribute signals throughout the various concert halls of the festival, which attracts an audience of more than 200,000 people and covers six venues. Besides the renowned jazz festival, the 2m2c is host to a number of events in Montreux including the Montreux Comedy Festival and more than 85 others.

“Our demands have changed drastically over the years,” said Pierre-Yves Nussbaum, audiovisual and multimedia facilities manager at 2m2c, which is responsible for the overall production of the jazz festival. “In 1997, we started with only seven network connections. Since then, and with the help of our MediorNet infrastructure, the system has grown to a capacity of more than 1,200 links, plus a fair number of A/V channels.”

The city of Montreux now uses the fiber-based MediorNet infrastructure for combined distribution and transmission of A/V and IP signals over a completely decentralized network. This infrastructure also allows for transporting the video signals for internal DVB-T TV distribution.

“The flexibility of the systems helped us meet a lot of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s A/V demands. The decentralized control system made it possible to distribute the various sources to the video walls and projectors we were using, and also helped us administer our internal TV programs — all capabilities that we’d been waiting for,” Nussbaum said. “The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has been assigned to administer and preserve the entire library of video material from the festival — more than 5,000 hours worth — so our goal is to expand the MediorNet infrastructure into the EPFL campus to enable direct access to this precious material. This move would be a crucial step toward a much-desired tapeless workflow.”

Further information about Riedel and its products is available at www.riedel.net.

Dan Corson Transforms Council Bluffs, Iowa’s River’s Edge Park Into Interactive Art Landscape With HARMAN’s Martin Professional Lighting

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — As an open space to accommodate community events and recreational activities, Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park sits on the Missouri River, creating a border between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Artist Dan Corson recently designed a massive light show for the park, complete with complex characters and simple, intuitive interactive games that spans across the park’s five acres. HARMAN’s Martin Professional light fixtures were installed by Bandit Lites to illuminate the artist’s vision.

Inspired by European baroque knot gardens, the ever-changing light environment showcases choreographed sequences and patterns every half hour. Additionally the piece interacts with visitors via thermal cameras and analytics program to track and “play” a series of simple, intuitive and fun games. The motions of park visitors can control the lighting and allow participants to be tracked with spotlights. The light show has been calibrated to utilize a different color palate for each of the three “park seasons” of the year: White, Brown and Green, coinciding with the snow, dormant grass and green grass states of the lawn.

“The city was originally expecting an artwork something along the lines of a laser light show, but the potential for a more ambitious interactive light environment was too great to pass up. I wanted a layer of activity that would engage visitors’ curiosity in the large space,” stated Corson. “I have been very impressed by the Martin lights and how they ended up meeting the power, brightness and area needs of this piece.”

A total of 16 Martin Exterior 1200 Image Projectors with custom gobos mounted on 35-foot poles and four MAC III Profile fixtures with custom gobos in Tempest enclosures mounted on 14-foot poles surround the 5-acre park to create the visual experience. A Martin MAX Module Cerebrum combined with a custom motion control system by David Beaudry of Beaudry Interactive runs the timing and interactive lightshow from a weatherproof station in the park.

Visual Terrain, Inc. worked with Corson to implement his vision. “With a project of this magnitude and a limited budget, we were concerned about providing meaningful coverage for the exhibit,” stated Lisa Passamonte Green, CEO and Principal in Charge at Visual Terrain. “We tested many products in terms of brightness, pattern capability and movement prior to selecting the Martin fixtures. The combination of their brightness, exterior housings, pattern and texture movement, and adjustability won us over. We have a long history with Martin and continue to come back to them when they fit the project application. We look forward to using Martin fixtures on our own future projects and those we do with artists such as Dan.”

The biggest challenge of the project, according to John Jenkinson of Bandit Lites was the sheer size of the space. “On the fixture side, every piece spec’d for this project was a perfect fit,” Jenkinson says. “The MAC 1200’s were one of the few tools that could have pulled off what we planned and the brightness and colors have performed perfectly.”
