Turkey’s National Public Broadcaster Selects Litepanels(tm)

CHATSWORTH, Calif. – The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, TRT, has selected a range of fixtures from LED lighting pioneer Litepanels(tm), for its brand new studios in the company’s Ankara headquarters. The Litepanels’ equipment was selected as part of the organization’s bid to improve efficiencies in both costs and energy savings across its multiple studios.

The two studios, home to the network’s rolling and hourly news programs, have recently been installed with 82 of Litepanels’ renowned 1×1 Mono daylight fixtures, together with range of 2×1 manual yokes, which mount two 1×1 fixtures side-by-side.

TRT has been operating out of its Ankara base for more than forty years, and transmits a wide array of international and domestic programs, from news and live sports, to popular music and magazine programs.

Litepanels’ regional partner in Turkey, Asimetrik Sound Lighting and Visual Systems, managed the TRT installation. Mehmet Sabri Erman, Asimetrik’s project manager said, “In the past TRT used traditional tungsten lighting in its studios and since the introduction of the Litepanels fixtures the organization has seen a significant reduction in its air conditioning and energy bills. The cost savings have been substantial, and TRT has also been equally impressed with the outstanding quality of light from the 1×1 fixtures.

“We received excellent feedback from Halil Parlak and Ufuk Genç, the project managers at TRT,” adds Erman. “They were very satisfied with the installation and the level of support offered.”
The Litepanels family of 1-foot square LED arrays offers a number of options with daylight, tungsten, variable colour and variable focus fixtures that output the company’s signature full spectrum white light. This revolutionary modular lighting system provides 1×1 of pure, luminous, soft, directional output and gives an unmatched level of lighting control.

The 1X1 Mono panels are used by many of the world’s biggest broadcasters and have been deemed the most versatile production light ever built. One of the many advantages the fixtures have brought to studios like TRT is that they are absolutely heat-free, so the fixture can be placed comfortably close to talent and creates an unmatched soft, wraparound light for the broadcaster.

NYIT’s Communications Department Relies on FOR-A’s HVS-390HS Video Switcher

Cypress, CA – When the Communication Arts Department at the Long Island campus of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) began the process of upgrading its studio to HD last year, the school looked for a reliable, cost-effective switcher. NYIT uses video production for hands-on classroom training and for show production for its global digital network, so the video switcher had to be easy to use and flexible for a variety of production scenarios. The school selected FOR-A’s HVS-390HS switcher, which has proven an ideal fit since its installation last September.

“Our 2 M/E HVS-390HS is a cost-efficient unit that provides NYIT with a variety of features, including extensive DVE and keyer options on each channel, and a variety of multi-viewing and routing capabilities built right into the switcher,” said Herb Savran, NYIT’s Chief Engineer of the Communication Arts Department. “The switcher gives us the flexibility we need to produce a variety of fast-changing shows. We love the light-up buttons and alphanumeric display over the keys and the ability to easily reconfigure settings.”

NYIT’s global digital network, Globesville, allows students to leverage the power of social media and engage with students and alumni from across the world. Students at NYIT rely on FOR-A’s HVS-390HS to produce online shows about sports, news, and pop culture. Roundtable discussions with participants from around the world, utilizing Skype and FaceTime technology, is just one way that NYIT leverages the switcher’s flexibility.

The HVS-390HS switcher is also used in classroom settings to train and educate students. NYIT has found the ease of setting up and configuring the switcher as an aid in catering to its different classes and programs.

“Not only are we very pleased with the switcher itself, but we have been overwhelmed by the service from FOR-A,” explained Savran. “Our sales manager, Jay Shinn, has been extremely supportive and proactive in making sure we’re happy with the product. I’ve had over 25 years of experience in using FOR-A equipment, and they’ve always been a reliable technology provider with a track record of great products and support.”

John Meyer, Audio Pioneer behind Meyer Sound, Enters TEC Awards Hall of Fame

John Meyer, CEO and co-founder of Meyer Sound Laboratories, was inducted into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame at the 2014 NAMM Show. Following an introduction by Dennis “Wiz” Leonard, long-time FOH mixer of the Grateful Dead, Meyer received the award as he joined Frank Zappa, Phil Spector, T Bone Burnett, and 30 other luminaries who have shaped the art and science of music, recording, and sound reinforcement technologies.

“Throughout my career, I have worked to create technology that brings audiences closer to musicians in a transparent way,” Meyer says. “There are products designed specifically to make art, but my interest has always been to create a high-quality listening experience without interfering with the artist’s creation. By providing these tools, we strive to enhance the shared entertainment experience that will surely remain a way of life for generations to come.”

John Meyer’s role as an audio innovator extends to the late 1960s, when he consulted on audio for the Steve Miller Band. Since establishing Meyer Sound in 1979, John Meyer and his wife, Helen Meyer have led an engineering team that is responsible for not only pioneering self-powered concert loudspeakers, but also introducing breakthrough developments including dedicated loudspeaker processing, SIM™ source independent measurement tools, trapezoidal loudspeaker cabinets, directional subwoofers, and more. Products designed and manufactured under Meyer’s direction are now installed in many of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, and have toured with artists ranging from the Three Tenors to Michael Bublé.

“New products start with an idea, but turning a concept into useful technology requires hard work and risk-taking that may or may not result in financial success,” says Meyer. “By rewarding the contributions of the engineers in our industry, the TEC Awards have inspired us to pursue ambitious new ideas and fostered an innovative spirit. I’m extremely honored to be inducted into the TEC Hall of Fame.”

Sharing the honors with John Meyer as the other 2014 TEC Awards Hall of Fame inductee was Hal Blaine, the legendary “Wrecking Crew” studio session drummer. Musician and engineer Todd Rundgren received this year’s Les Paul Award.

Capital Sound Chooses Self-Powered Meyer Sound MILO for Adrenaline-Filled “Nitro Circus Live”

A self-powered Meyer Sound MILO® line array loudspeaker system recently accompanied the 15-city European arena tour of “Nitro Circus Live,” the extreme stunt show featuring daring stunt specialists on motorbikes, skateboards, and BMX bikes.  Over the roar of both frenzied fans and motorbikes, the Meyer Sound system from London-based Capital Sound delivered clear, powerful audio for the show’s announcements, interviews, and music playback.

According to Capital Sound, the MILO system offered ample power and crisp intelligibility, as well as the logistical advantages of self-powered technology.

“With the show being on the floor of the venue, the cable routings, power distribution, and any amplifiers that would normally be sited on the ground would get in the way,” says Paul Timmins, general manager of Capital Sound. “Also, with the tight schedule for rigging and de-rigging, speed was of the essence. To achieve all these aims, we deployed a customized MILO system with dedicated power distribution on top of each hang. This meant we could put any hang in any position in the building, all linked via an Optocore fiber optic digital network system.”

For most shows, the coverage requirement was for either 270 degrees or 360 degrees. The general setup featured six hangs of nine MILO loudspeakers over three MICA® line array loudspeakers, with two arrays of nine MICA loudspeakers each for delay, eight UPA-1P loudspeakers for fill, and 16 700-HP subwoofers positioned under the lander ramps. A Galileo® loudspeaker management system with three Galileo 616 processors supplied system drive and optimization.

“The MILOs did most of the work, with the MICAs hanging off the bottom and supported by a clever Meyer Sound transition frame,” says Timmins. “This worked exceptionally well, allowing us to configure the hangs depending on the room.”

As directed by George Gorga, head of sound for “Nitro Circus Live,” the main hangs were flown just off-center in each venue. With this positioning, and the arrays pre-cabled and on dollies, the Capital Sound team could rig the system clear of everything else that was going on, significantly decreasing setup time.

Inputs for the show principally came from ten Shure UHF-R handheld and headset microphones, plus a pair of Denon D-630 CD players, all mixed by Gorga on a Yamaha M7CL digital console. In addition to the main Meyer Sound system, console outputs also fed eight Sennheiser 2000 series IEM transmitters with 16 receivers, plus Sennheiser HD-25 headphones for local monitoring.

Hosted by and featuring daredevil entrepreneur Travis Pastrana, the “Nitro Circus Live” tour was spawned by the success of the “Nitro Circus” reality TV series which started in 2006.

Meyer Sound Reinforces Live Jazz at Chef Claus Meyer’s Copenhagen Restaurant Venue

Globally renowned chef Claus Meyer has recently opened The Standard, a live jazz and restaurant venue in Copenhagen, Denmark. The jazz club features a compact, self-powered Meyer Sound UltraSeries™ loudspeaker system installed by Kastrup, Denmark-based Stouenborg.

“The Standard has a small, powerful, and flexible system that offers excellent dispersion and reproduces sound perfectly,” says Anders Jørgensen, project manager and sound designer for Stouenborg.

The installation in the 68-seat club combines two UPJ-1P VariO™ and three UPM-1P loudspeakers with one UMS-1P subwoofer. Performances are mixed on a Roland V-Mixer mixing console, and musicians use DPA microphones.

“We considered a number of options, but the combination of UPJ-1P and UPM-1P loudspeakers best provided the necessary audio fidelity and visual unobtrusiveness,” says Jørgensen. “The challenge was to ensure a pristine sound with no coloration, and the UPJ-1Ps have been really terrific in this regard.”

Recent performers at The Standard’s jazz club include Roberta Gambarini, The Oscar Peterson Legacy Quartet, Viktoria Tolstoy, and other leading Scandinavian jazz musicians. The venue is also equipped to stream its performances via HD webcasts.

Claus Meyer is co-founder of two-Michelin-star Noma, a Copenhagen restaurant named best in the world three years in a row by Restaurant magazine.
