SSL Showcase Live Sound Console at ISE 2014

SSL signals long-term commitment to the installed systems sector by exhibiting at key EU show.

AMSTERDAMSolid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, is proud to announce that it will showcase the SSL ‘Live’ console at the 2014 ISE show (Stand 7.H18). Since its announcement at ProLight + Sound in 2013, the SSL Live console has rapidly become the audio console the industry is talking about. Coinciding with the roll out of a global resale partner network and the first commercial sales, SSL’s presence for the first time at ISE signals a strong long-term commitment to the installed systems sector.

“Industry reaction to the arrival of SSL in live sound has been extremely encouraging,” states Antony David, Managing Director at SSL. “Much of the initial attention has centered on the superb sound of the console and the excellent ergonomics it offers to engineers, but the console also delivers from a technical integration perspective. The combination of versatile inbuilt and remote connectivity, generous processing capability and extremely flexible console configuration and routing and powerful output matrix make Live the perfect product for installed environments. We are very excited to be exhibiting at ISE for the first time and looking forward to meeting the unique partner and user community that attend the show.”

About SSL Live
Live brings SSL’s unique approach to audio quality and console ergonomics to sound for live audio production. SSL has been at the leading edge of analogue and digital audio console innovation for over 35 years. Like so many multi award-winning, ground-breaking and much loved consoles for Music, Broadcast and Post production that SSL has created through the decades, Live brings something new and very special to the party.

Live is a flexible and extremely powerful digital audio console designed specifically to meet the demands of all aspects of live sound production. It is perfectly suited to touring or installation, FOH or monitors, to venues and arenas, houses of worship and concert halls, to anywhere where audio quality is important and engineers require power, complete flexibility and a user interface that puts them in control.

Live is all about power and control. Based on SSL’s new Tempest processing platform, Live has plenty of power and it is deployed in a uniquely versatile way. The headline numbers are impressive at the price with 976 inputs and outputs and 192 full processing audio ‘paths’ at 96kHz. How those ‘paths’ are utilised is extremely flexible with power allocated to Channels, Auxes, Stem Groups and Masters configured to suit the needs of each show. All processing is built into the console surface and it has a collection of I/O connectivity built into the frame. A full range of Stagebox I/O connects to the console via MADI with the potential for larger systems to make use of SSL’s own Blacklight technology that carries up to 256 channels of bi-directional audio and control via a single fibre connection.

Power really is nothing if it can’t be controlled and Live offers a truly excellent control surface. It combines multiple tablet style multi-gesture touch screens with elegant hardware ergonomics, excellent visual feedback and a collection of innovative new features. It enables engineers to work how they do today, whether they prefer new touch screen or classic hardware technology, or like to combine them both, and offers new and better ways of doing things that will make life less stressful and more creative.

Being an SSL, Live has legendary audio performance as standard. Impeccable audio quality is a primary design feature right the way through from studio grade SuperAnalogue™ mic preamps, 24bit/96kHz A/D D/A conversion, to 64bit internal processing and 96khz operation throughout. An obsession with quality also shines through an array of channel processing tools that bear the classic SSL tone but bring a completely new level of precision, flexibility and usability. Live features an impressive collection of 30 new Effects and audio analysis tools which take SSL’s acclaimed studio grade processing and re-craft it for live and they have their own dedicated processing power.

As has been the case so many times in the last few decades, SSL has taken a fresh look at the way professional engineers work and created an inspired console that builds upon the way things are done today and offers the potential for a new, exciting and more creative way to work tomorrow.

Masque Sound Supports Billy Crystal’s Return to Broadway for Reprisal of Tony® Award-Winning Play, 700 Sundays

When Billy Crystal returned to Broadway to reprise his Tony® Award-winning play 700 Sundays, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was on hand to support Sound Designer Steve Canyon Kennedy and Associate Sound Designer Walter Trarbach with a custom audio equipment package.

700 Sundays, an autobiographical journey, is an original two-act play centered on the legendary actor’s heartfelt and often hilarious story of growing up, growing old and the undeniable power of family. Crystal plays numerous characters that have influenced who he is today, taking audiences through his youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years, and finally his adulthood. The title refers to the number of Sundays shared by Crystal and his father, Jack Crystal, who passed away when he was 15.

“Masque Sound has been the audio equipment rental provider since the show made its Broadway debut in 2004. They have been with us for two national tours as well as the show’s Australia run, so they were the obvious choice for this reprisal,” says Trarbach. “We have enjoyed our relationship with Masque Sound, and their equipment and support is always top notch.”

For 700 Sundays, Masque Sound provided a custom audio package that included an Avid VENUE Profile digital mixing console. L-Acoustics dv-DOSCs made up the line array elements for the main speaker system and a selection of speakers from Meyer Sound, EAW and d&b were utilized as fill speakers for the rest of the theater. An XTA Electronics DP428/448 Audio Management System and Meyer Sound Galileo 616 Loudspeaker Management System as well as a wireless microphone package from Sennheiser and an intercom system from Clear-Com were also included.

“In addition to the high quality gear provided by Masque Sound, the sound system worked well thanks to the hard work of our team,” says Trarbach. “Production Sound Engineer Andrew Keister and John Cooper, who handled the backstage audio, both did a wonderful job.”

700 Sundays won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event and the 2005 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance. The limited nine-week engagement will continue through January 5, 2014 at the Imperial Theatre (249 West 45th Street). HBO will be filming the play for a special that is slated to air in 2014.

About Masque Sound
Founded in 1936 by a trio of Broadway stagehands, Masque Sound evolved into one of NYC’s most successful theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design companies specializing in theatrical, house of worship, sporting, corporate, TV broadcast and live concert events. Clear-Com to Present Scalable and Flexible Intercom Solutions at ISE 2014

AMSTERDAM, JANUARY 30, 2014 – Clear-Com® is showcasing several new intercom systems and product enhancements that make its solution capable of meeting communication requirements for a wide range of applications and environments. Ideal for theatres, convention centres, multi-campus venues and stadiums, the new Eclipse HX-Delta Digital Matrix System, extended HelixNet™ Partyline Intercom System and enhanced Tempest®2400 Wireless Intercom System will be on display at ISE 2014 (Stand 11.D54).

“At Clear-Com, we strive to provide our customers with intercom systems that work for most applications and in different environments, from a basic two-wire beltpack install to a multi-building campus,” says Simon Browne, Director of Product Management, Clear-Com. “The solutions we are presenting at ISE this year are designed to scale into larger systems and extend access to local or geographically-dispersed user groups without compromising audio clarity, reliability and system performance.”

Clear-Com’s all new Eclipse HX-Delta digital matrix system offers the perfect balance of speed, capacity, capabilities and performance in a compact 3RU frame. It offers up to 256 internal ports, features two CPU cards and houses four interface cards and three interface modules. The matrix has the potential to connect users over dedicated CAT5, IP infrastructures (LAN, WAN and internet), and fibre networks. It can also seamlessly integrate with digital wireless beltpacks and IP-based virtual panels. Additionally, interface modules allow external sources including four-wire audio, partylines, telephone lines and MADI, to be routed to user keypanels or beltpacks. Powered by the latest EHX v7.5 software, up to 64 Eclipse HX matrices can be connected to form a single networked installation.

The latest version of HelixNet Partyline provides a multi-system linking capability over Ethernet and fibre to permit a more sophisticated and cost-effective digital partyline intercom network for large stadiums or multi-campus venues. This function enables the distribution of many digital partyline channels, program audio feeds and auxiliary interfaced audio over a single XLR cable to a digital beltpack user. This new capability for HelixNet means that each of the possible dozens of HelixNet beltpack users can access any two of the available network partyline channels on the beltpack. Enabling the system linking capability are two modules: the HLI-ET2 Ethernet Module, for Main Station-to-Main Station networking over a LAN and the HLI-FBS Fibre Module, for daisy-chaining fibre interfaces to link Main Stations over long distances.

The new Tempest Digital Wireless Intercoms’ CCT-RT-EX Remote Line Extender is used to increase the maximum distance between a Tempest BaseStation and the Remote Antenna Transceiver. This increase can be as much as 914 meters with a single Line Extender, or 609 meters per Line Extender if using two or the maximum of three, for total coverage of up to 2,286 meters. Also featured is Tempest2400’s Seamless Roaming feature, which allows Tempest2400 BeltStation users to move freely between as many as 16 different BaseStations (coverage areas or zones) without interference or dropouts. These further extend Tempest’s wireless communications capabilities for live productions, multi-level facilities and sports arenas staged in RF-heavy environments.

Barix Introduces Next-Generation In-Store Radio Solution

SoundScape delivers comprehensive management and audio playout solution to help retailers, businesses efficiently engage consumers

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 29, 2014Barix has long been a global provider of in-store radio solutions, bringing value to retail shops and other businesses through brand awareness, consumer engagement and revenue generation. The introduction of SoundScape, its next-generation in-store radio solution, positions Barix as a technology leader in the retail market, helping businesses enhance flexibility and fuel new business opportunities from an advanced yet easy-to-use platform.

SoundScape is a comprehensive solution to manage audio distribution over IP networks, offering a centralized management portal and audio players at multiple locations. Music service providers can efficiently power in-store radio networks with SoundScape, using the portal to manage, configure, group and monitor SoundScape audio players and device status network-wide. SoundScape also enables content scheduling through built-in software, or allows service providers to use custom scheduling solutions.

Barix previously offered live streaming and Store and Play programs as separate applications, each available via software downloads for its IP audio encoders and decoders. SoundScape supports both applications on the same device, allowing retailers to switch between live feeds and stored playlists that play back at scheduled times. Both applications support targeted, location-based advertising insertions that seamlessly fade in and out of music programs.

The network-wide management capabilities of SoundScape further reduces costs and complexity by enabling customers to remotely deliver firmware updates, create and monitor logs, and track play reports for sponsors. This takes the onus off content providers who previously used in-house or third-party monitoring solutions to perform such services. Retailers can also integrate SoundScape with music suppliers to minimize licensing costs.

“Businesses of all kinds, including many retail chains, have long used Barix in-store radio solutions to deliver live streams and file-based playlists to stores and locations,” said Guggenheim. “SoundScape retains the core Barix competency of efficiently and reliably moving audio across IP networks, while introducing new features that will ultimately help businesses create better brand awareness, improve the shopping experience and increase basket size as part of their omni-channel strategies.”

SoundScape additionally provides value through an ability to target content across the network. The end-to-end architecture ensures that businesses can group devices to receive specific ads, other languages or completely different programs – whether by location, by department or otherwise.

The ability to switch between live streams and stored playlists brings additional flexibility. Retailers can take advantage of true, dynamic ad insertions within live, branded radio programs for part of the day, and switch to stored content at busier shopping times to preserve network bandwidth. The Store and Play application otherwise allows retailers to switch to special, customized playlists for holidays, events and local store promotions. To the latter point, retailers can easily take advantage of system flexibility to insert special ads for real-time promotion of price drops and other in-store specials.

Barix will demonstrate the complete solution in simulated retail environments at ISE 2014, taking place February 4-6 at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam (Stand 8-E275); and one week later at Digital Signage Expo (Booth 1716), taking place February 12-13 at the Sands Convention Center.

Barix supplies simple and reliable solutions and components to systems integrators and end users worldwide. We move high-quality audio across IP networks, adding value to customer solutions for more than a decade with hundreds of thousands of devices installed worldwide. High-Tech Meets Elegance at Iceland’s Hippest Bowling Lanes

Reykjavik, Iceland | January, 2014 – When a bowling alley houses 22 lanes plus a VIP/private party area, a sports bar, cafe, and restaurant, live DJs, and more than 50 screens to showcase all the best in live sports and entertainment, it’s clear that this is not just another blue collar beer-and-peanuts joint. Keiluhöllin Egilshöll, is a noteworthy blend of both high-tech and elegant design, boasting one of Iceland’s largest AV installations to date and being named Bowlers Journal’s “Best New Lounge/Restaurant.”

Inside this 30,000 sq. foot venue, club-like LED lighting pours over the lanes and neon bowling balls, with sleek, softly lit lounges with plush couches tucked away behind. LCD screens hover over the lanes and line the dimly lit brick walls of the bar and cafe. The restaurant, meanwhile, is free of screens, filling the space with decorative lighting and rustic stone walls.

Despite the venue’s singular elegance, it still presents all the acoustical challenges associated with any bowling alley — hard, reverberant surfaces, ever-changing audio material, and of course, the inevitable din of the game itself. Reykjavik-based AV designers ETOS designed and installed the high-end sound and video systems for this uniquely diverse venue. As ETOS General Manager Jakob Kristinsson explains, the audio system had to not only transmit intelligible announcements over the din of a cacophonous bowling alley, but also deliver full spectrum sound and hefty bass for music and live DJs – hence the decision to go with the power, pattern control, and full-range performance of the Renkus-Heinz CF/CFX series.

Across the six zones covering the 22 lanes and VIP area, ETOS installed 12 CFX151 cabinets, with six CFX18S subwoofers for low end reinforcement. Featuring a two-inch extended range titanium HF driver, and a 15-inch heavy duty woofer that can handle up to 700W, the CFX151s powerfully deliver the full spectrum performance required in the main bowling area. The built-in crossover also includes EQ and high-frequency protection, ideal for the dynamic changes in audio and occupancy levels.

Augmenting the primary setup, six CFX121 cabinets in three zones cover the restaurant area, with four more CF121 units across the four zones covering the sports bar and cafe. Audio networking is courtesy of two Peavey MediaMatrix Nion n6 systems.

The video component of this AV installation is extensive as well, including more than 45 LCD displays and 15 projectors from Philips, LG, and Panasonic. Rounding out the impressive look and sound of Keiluhöllin Egilshöll is a full Crestron controlled LED and lighting system, including five wireless control pads.

The installation’s intense schedule compressed about 800 hours into an eight week span to complete the entire project, from design to doors opening. Since then, ETOS reports the system has been performing flawlessly, blending the best in design with the best in technology.
