Cinecolombia Turns to International Datacasting for Digital Cinema Solutions

Company brings leading digital cinema technology to Latin America’s
expanding digital cinema market.

Ottawa, ON – As a global market leader in digital cinema technology, International Datacasting Corporation (TSX: IDC) is pleased to announce that Cinecolombia, one of the region’s leading movie theatre chains, has selected IDC’s digital cinema distribution technology. IDC’s Latin American digital cinema partner, Grupo ChileFilms and their affiliate, Cinecolor Colombia, managed the sale to Cinecolombia.

This installation of SuperFlex Pro Cinema Cache Servers further strengthens IDC’s growing presence in the Latin American market. At present, about 70% of the cinemas employing electronic delivery solutions use IDC’s technology to transmit the latest blockbuster films and live 2D and 3D events via satellite. Today these solutions are deployed at over 4,000 sites on six continents.

“With IDC, we have great confidence that we can provide Cinecolombia’s movie theatres with exceptional value by offering outstanding technology that is already in use worldwide by leading digital cinema networks,” said Carlos Acero, General Manager of Cinecolor Colombia.

Cinecolor Colombia is a part of IDC’s partner Grupo Chilefilms, which operates extensive digital cinema networks throughout Latin America. ChileFilms owns and operates the CinecolorSAT digital cinema satellite distribution network, which not only delivers motion pictures, trailers and advertising, but live and alternative content as well. ChileFilms live content offerings including major sports events delivered to cinemas across Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.

“IDC’s proven track record as the supplier of choice for digital cinema content distributors worldwide really sets the stage for us in Latin America,” said Alexandra Villamizar, Technical Manager at Cinecolombia. “With IDC, we get the same extraordinary technology here in Colombia that powers 70% of electronic content distribution to cinemas worldwide.”

“As Latin American countries, like Colombia, transition to digital distribution of cinema content and live events, IDC is focused on bringing leading-edge solutions to this market, which have garnered such a high level of confidence from our customers elsewhere in the world,” said Doug Lowther, President and CEO of IDC.

BEN FINDLAY MIXING FOH AND STUDIO FOR GABRIEL WITH SONNOX

New Concert Film Being Prepped For Theatrical Release

WILTSHIRE, UK: Having mixed extensively at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios throughout the 90s, Ben Findlay is primarily a live engineer these days. Having mixed live shows for Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Cat Stevens, Sting and other major artists, he clearly enjoys ‘life on the road.’

Two concerts from Peter Gabriel’s “Back To Front Tour” were filmed last October at London’s O2 Arena, and are currently being edited for release as a 4K Cinema feature this year. Findlay is mixing the audio for the movie and DVD release, utilizing Real World Studios’ Dolby certified Exigy speaker array.

He reports the Sonnox Oxford EQ is playing a crucial role in the project, with the GML Option a particularly helpful asset. “Most of the EQ’s in this mix are Oxfords, and the Inflator is my secret weapon,” Findlay says. “I use it primarily on Peter’s vocal channel, to give it a presence that dominates the mix. It’s proved extremely effective in bringing extra life to the drum bus as well.”

“Oxford Reverb is also a great favorite of mine, Findlay adds. “It’s really flexible, you can tailor it do exactly what you want. There’s a very comprehensive EQ section built in to the reverb too. I’m using it on the drums, on some of Peter’s vocals, and on David Rhodes’ acoustic guitar. With two guitars on some songs, I need to separate them. I find using a subtle amount of Oxford Reverb helps define a space for each instrument.

“When we played the show mix back to Peter we put the ‘Warmth Function’ on the Dynamics plug-in across the entire mix, which he loved. So the whole show has that process added to it in varying degrees. That made the sign-off process much easier and was a bit of a lifesaver! Sonnox feels to me like a very solid brand, and the support is always great,” Findlay concludes.

New JVC ProHD Shoulder-Mount Camcorders Feature Advanced HD Streaming for Live Broadcast or Webcast

GY-HM850 and GY-HM890 Feature Exclusive Dual Codec Design with 12-Bit Image Processing, Interchangeable 20x Zoom Lens

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today introduced its new GY-HM890 and GY-HM850 ProHD shoulder-mount camcorders, which set a new benchmark in ENG camera IP integration. Complemented by a new interchangeable Fujinon 20x autofocus zoom lens, the new cameras deliver outstanding full HD image capture and delivery, while the built-in streaming engine, FTP and 4G LTE connectivity allows live HD transmission directly from the camera without being attached to external costly and cumbersome bonded cellular solutions.

“We believe the future is with the live video streaming and FTP service fully integrated into the camera, as demonstrated with the new GY-HM890 and GY-HM850,” explained Edgar Shane, general manager of engineering, JVC Professional Products. “With the recent advancements in 4G LTE availability and bandwidth, service providers can deliver reliable high-speed connections that can support HD streaming with a single modem. This technology is here now, and will continue to progress and improve.”

The new 800 Series cameras significantly expand on the live HD streaming and file transfer capabilities introduced in the popular GY-HM650 mobile news camera. JVC’s exclusive dual codec design allows the new cameras to transmit live HD footage or transfer files in the background while shooters continue to record footage in their normal workflow. When paired with a Verizon 4G LTE modem, which is connected directly to the camera via USB, the camera transmits footage to a broadcast facility in real time. JVC’s Advanced Streaming Technology (AST) provides content-aware error correction, bandwidth shaping, and real-time feedback of streaming status.

Each camera features a built-in processor with proprietary algorithms that maximize bandwidth to ensure reliable transmission even under difficult conditions. Plus, advanced content aware error correction compensates for up to 30 percent packet loss. Streamconfidence provides stream and LTE status in the high-resolution 4.3-inch LCD monitor and LCOS color viewfinder.

The cameras provide secure FTP file transfer on location, as well as live monitoring and extensive camera and lens control via Wi-Fi from a smartphone
or tablet (iPhone, iPad, or Android). For broadcasters who use metadata, a built-in GPS allows location information to be recorded. Plus, metadata can be edited
on a smartphone or tablet and transferred to the camera via Wi-Fi.

The GY-HM850 and GY-HM890 are also compatible with JVC’s Professional Streaming Services, also announced today, which include the new JVC Broadcaster server powered by Zixi for reliable live content delivery to variety of hardware decoders, CDNs, and Web.

Both cameras feature three, 1/3-inch 2.07 effective megapixel CMOS sensors that capture full 1920×1080 images. The imagers provide 12-bit readout, F11 sensitivity (60Hz), and excellent signal-to-noise ratio. The new Fujinon wide angle 20x zoom lens features auto focus, built-in optical image stabilization, and chromatic aberration correction. The interchangeable 1/3-inch bayonet lens also includes manual focus, zoom, and iris rings.

Beyond ENG, the GY-HM890 is a versatile studio or multi-camera field production camera, with a 68-pin connection that accommodates JVC fiber or multi-core camera modules. Compatible with a full range of components, including customized studio sled, zoom and focus controls, CCUs, and 8.4-inch LCD viewfinder, as well as box-style lenses from Canon and Fujinon, the GY-HM890 is an ideal choice as an HD studio camera.

Dual SDHC/SDXC card slots allow simultaneous recording (for instant client copy/backup) or relay recording (for continuous shooting) to low cost, non-proprietary media. During simultaneous recording, one card can act as a continuous backup that overrides the pause function triggered by the operator. Relay recording allows virtually unlimited recording capability in the field.

Continuing JVC’s commitment to native file workflows, the GY-HM850 and GY-HM890 record HD or SD footage as Final Cut Pro (.MOV), XDCAM EX (.MP4), AS-10 (.MXF), AVCHD (.MTS), or H.264 (.MOV) files for compatibility with most major NLE systems. Footage can be recorded using MPEG-2 or H.264 compression at a variety of bit rates, frame rates, and resolutions.

The dual codecs offer simultaneous recording of a full HD file on one memory card and smaller, Web friendly H.264 files on the other. Plus, a new H.264 Extreme High Quality (XHQ) recording mode, commonly used in HD SLRs, offers virtually lossless H.264 50 Mbps recording.

“The new HM800 Series are the most feature-rich ProHD camcorders we’ve ever produced. They truly provide broadcasters the tools to be first on-air and first online,” said Craig Yanagi, manager, marketing and brand strategy, JVC Professional Products. “With a 4G LTE modem that you plug directly to the camera or a 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot that you keep in your pocket, you can go live to the broadcast studio or the Web. Add the new technology standards of broadcast ENG delivery with the full studio capabilities of the GY-HD890 and this is by far the most innovative line of professional camcorders available today.”

Both models include genlock and time code terminals for multi-camera setups, HD/SD-SDI out, HDMI out, 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, and a four-channel audio system with stereo AUX inputs and two XLR mic/line inputs with phantom power. Other features include 12 assignable user buttons, 10-second Pre Rec (retro cache), focus assist, interval recording for time lapse footage, and variable frame rate recording for over/under crank effects,

The GY-HM890 also includes an HD/SD-SDI Pool Feed input that can record and stream video and audio from another camera or SDI source during press conferences or other pool feed environments. The cameras also support LANC remote controllers as well as JVC’s proprietary wired remote control system.

Including lens, the GY-HM850 has a suggested list price of $7,995, while the GY-HM890 has a suggested list price of $9,995. Both models will be available in March.

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Fixtures Shine For Saddleback Church’s Powerful, Music-Inspired Services and Global Broadcasts

LAKE FOREST, California — With a flourishing network of worship facilities across southern California, internationally and via webcasts, the Saddleback Church, with a congregation of tens of thousand around the world, has grown accustom to the bold sermons from Pastor Rick Warren in an exciting atmosphere. Highlighted by a wide variety of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures, the church has developed a type of service that’s evolved from a single preacher on a stage to an all-encompassing music and light show experience. Flashing lights, passion-filled songs and roaring applause breaks are the norm for Saddleback.

Saddleback’s main worship center, out of the six in the Lake Forest, CA campus, boasts six MAC Viper Profiles and 18 Auras along the stage. The main worship center seats 3,000 members per service, averaging more than 17,000 worshipers per weekend. The additional worship areas on the Lake Forest campus range from 50-600 capacity limits, offering different takes on the Church’s sermon for the day, whether a more traditional service, hard rock, or other genre, to keep parishioners entertained and engaged. Each of the remote campuses features a wide variety of Martin fixtures as well.

In-house lighting designer Alex Fuller has played a large part in the implementation of Martin lighting fixtures into Saddleback Church. “We’re here to provide an experience for the community, not just a stage for your average worship service,” stated Fuller. “The Vipers perform perfectly once they’re up in our venues, and the Auras are workhorses that we can rely on week after week, without worry.”

A routine day of service in the main worship venue transitions between the band performing five to six songs, regular and guest speakers and videos playing. Two 24×13-foot screens flank the stage for an enhanced visual experience.

Recently, Saddleback has added satellite campuses in Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, and Berlin. In addition to creating delightful, custom light shows for each sermon and concert, the church broadcasts each service live to its congregation around the world. “Our worship center has become more of a broadcast room, with thousands of people both participating live and watching abroad,” says Greg Baker, Global Technical Director, Saddleback Church. “Lighting is a huge part of broadcast and the Martin fixtures allow us to provide top-notch quality over our high-definition broadcast channel every day. Martin translates very well on air and that’s something our remote members appreciate.”

“The support system Martin has developed for its customers has solidified my appreciation for its lights. I’m a Martin fan through and through,” continued Fuller. “Every type of fixture in the industry eventually will require service and Martin is on top of it immediately. We are never down and can always rely on Martin no matter what our worship services, in any part of the world need.”

Martin operates the industry’s most complete and capable distributor network with local partners in nearly 100 countries. BrightSign 4K Digital Signage Media Player Takes 4K to New Heights

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage media players, took the wraps off its much-anticipated 4K digital signage media player. While a handful of niche players claim 4K support, BrightSign’s new player is the first to deliver a true end-to-end 4K solution that accepts H.265-encoded content and delivers 60 fps output via HDMI 2.0. Each of these characteristics is necessary to deliver a true 4K solution, and BrightSign is the first to deliver on all fronts.

“There’s a great deal of excitement and anticipation around 4K, but unfortunately many of the purported 4K solutions currently available fall short and don’t deliver a true 4K experience,” said Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign. “However our BrightSign 4K player complies with the new standards to preserve video quality from encoding to output and support the complete 4K ecosystem, start to finish.”
4K in the digital signage market has been met with much enthusiasm, as well as some confusion about how to deliver “true” 4K. For content to remain 4K native and be delivered at the highest visual quality, video must be captured on a 4K-capable camera, encoded and decoded using the new H.265 compression standard at 10 bits/channel, and fed to the display via HDMI 2.0 to preserve the original 60 fps frame rate. Any broken link in this chain of events adversely impacts video quality and the output falls short of what 4K is made to be.
Elemental Technologies supplies the encoding horsepower required to deliver a true 4K viewing experience. Elemental is the first to implement the HEVC specification with the capability of processing 4Kp60 H.265 content in real-time. The company’s award-winning work in HEVC video processing helps BrightSign create the high-quality viewing experience available with its new player.
“Early 4K claims should be met with scrutiny, as some vendors rush to bring 4K solutions to market that lack the technical components essential to preserving 4K content as it’s encoded and passed through the player for display,” said Keith Wymbs, VP of marketing at Elemental. “We look forward to working closely with BrightSign to deliver encoded HEVC content of the highest quality to create an immersive digital signage experience.”
True 4K output possesses two primary characteristics; a resolution of 3840×2160, and a frame rate of 60 fps. The BrightSign 4K is the first player of its kind to successfully playback both.

Sennheiser and P!NK soar to new heights during 56th GRAMMY Awards

Los Angeles, CA, February 3, 2014: Once again, music’s biggest event of the year did not disappoint as the 56th GRAMMY Awards featured exquisite performances by P!NK, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Madonna, Beyoncé, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Queens of the Stone Age – all of whom used Sennheiser microphones and wireless systems. Hosted for the third time by LL Cool J, the spectacular event was telecast live from the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles on January 26, drawing no less than 28.5 million viewers around the world.

Perhaps the most dramatic performance during the evening was from P!NK, whose flawless vocal performance was only matched by her breathtaking mid-air acrobatics before a live audience of nearly 20,000. For the duration of her aerial segment, she used a custom earpiece with an integrated boom microphone built to specification by Sennheiser – the result of a highly collaborative project that helped her engineers achieve all the technical aspects required by the performance.

“There is so much physicality in P!NK’s show with her spinning and flying around that we needed a reliable microphone and IEM that sounded great and would be as unobtrusive as possible,” commented Jon Lewis, monitor engineer for P!NK. “So Sennheiser worked with our engineer Horst Hartmann to create a custom design and integrate the microphone with the earpiece, providing both stability and stellar audio. The earpiece features a single driver which provides plenty of definition without any significant ear fatigue.” The microphone features a Sennheiser HSP 4 capsule with a cardioid polar pattern.

“Because of the circus aspect of P!NK’s performance, she is in a totally different environment at any given time,” Lewis continued. “Whether she is being flung in the middle of the air in front of the PA or in the middle of the stage, it is reassuring to know that she has a reliable microphone and an IEM that is her primary reference throughout the show.” Following the aerial performance, P!NK switched to a Sennheiser SKM 2000 transmitter coupled with a custom MD 9235 capsule.

Delivering on a promise of reliability, versatility and performance
Dave Bellamy, who already has 16 GRAMMY Award events under his belt, handled the on-site RF coordination, deploying a total of 22 channels of Sennheiser wireless during the show including the units used by P!NK: “We used a Phoenix 8 antenna system with 10 arrays, put in place specifically to handle the in-air acrobatics,” he says. “The only thing I need to be concerned with was the effect of the costume and body on her transmitter. In this application, the Sennheiser SK 5212 propagates extremely well and is very compact in size. It isn‘t affected as much when being used on the body as other transmitters and I like that.”

On the receiving side of the signal, Bellamy had several Sennheiser EM 3732-IIs, which he says is a robust, reliable receiver. ”I like the way we can change frequency ranges to about anywhere we want to go,” he observes. “I am using channels 62 and 67 because of the high number of RF devices in the show – these are the only receivers that will hit these upper range frequencies on the market, and I really need them.”

In addition to the wireless channels used for performances, Bellamy also utilized two channels for LL Cool J, who presented through a Sennheiser SKM 5200 transmitter coupled with an MD 5235 dynamic microphone, as well as an SK 5212-II bodypack transmitter. “The bodypack transmitter is working just as good as the handheld transmitter,“ says Bellamy. “Having this level of predictability means I can sleep at night!”

Several Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun mics and Neumann KM 184 condenser microphones were used to capture sounds of the audience, and were later mixed with performances, providing millions of music fans the next best thing to being there. “We use the MKH 416s on the front line, and the KM 184s as surround mics,” explains Tom Holmes, production mixer for the GRAMMY Awards. “We always use these microphones because they sound great and don’t get in the way of the show. Our ultimate goal is to have listeners at home feel like they are in the same environment.“

Tymphany Launches Into Professional Branded Transducer Market

Tymphany’s new line of professional transducers resets the relationship between performance and cost by building on proven design and manufacturing principles from Tymphany’s Peerless and Vifa heritage.

Tymphany pro transducerAnaheim, CA – The NAMM Show 2014 – February 1, 2014 – Tymphany HK Ltd., the leading expert in transducer and audio system design and manufacturing, announced today the FSL Series of woofers, the TC Series full-range column transducers, and the BC and H Series tweeter line. These professional audio transducers are built on 85 years of design and manufacturing expertise from Tymphany’s Peerless and Vifa brands.

Tymphany’s international team of acoustic experts leveraged the latest FEA multi-physics techniques to create transducers that reset the performance to price relationship for professional branded transducers. Independently verified measurements and production tolerance data validate Tympany’s leadership in transducer design and manufacturing. The company seeks to push the industry standard for power handling and sound quality upward, while helping audio companies hit cost targets.

“By combining an innovative, western-led design philosophy with the speed and efficiency of our Asian-based engineering and manufacturing teams, we optimized the new Tymphany transducers to handle the most demanding professional applications while lowering costs for our customers,” said George Bullimore, head of the transducer business unit for Tymphany.

FSL Series Pro Woofers
Available in 5, 6.5, 8, 12, or 15-inch versions, each FSL Series Pro Woofer is voiced with a smooth frequency response and designed for optimal large signal performance. The Ferrite magnet steel frame ensures reliability and enables custom variants for unique or large-scale installations.

BC Series Tweeters
Tymphany is the world leader in tweeter design, and the BC Series is a reflection of the work done by top audio industry minds over eight decades. The series includes a one-inch damped fabric soft dome tweeter with compact faceplate and finned heat sink for improved power handling and enhanced voice coil cooling. Tymphany’s H Series Tweeters feature a one-inch titanium dome and offer compact, high-strength Neodymium designs or cost-effective ferrite designs. All tweeters produce a smooth, extended frequency response with high sensitivity and consistent performance.

TC Series Column Transducer
The TC Series of full-range transducers were specifically designed to meet the needs of the column loudspeaker market. The TC Series was optimized to have an extremely smooth frequency response through the mid-range with a rising response at the top end of the curve. With industry leading sensitivity and low-frequency extension, the TC series sets a new standard for column transducers. The TC series is available in 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4-inch models.

“Tymphany is already designing and manufacturing transducers for the world’s leading professional loudspeaker brands; a branded transducer offering is the natural extension of our complete ODM system solutions,” said Bullimore. “Guitar amps, PA systems, live sound, we really see no limits to what the future holds.”
Tymphany’s new line of professional transducers are available now for evaluation and can be seen at NAMM 2014 in booth A6260.

Yamaha R Remote App For Rio Line

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced today the launch of R Remote software. R Remote joins the Yamaha R Series input/output rack units, which since their inception, have made significant advancements in audio, creating natural sound quality, Dante audio networking, and system flexibility. The new Windows™- based PC standalone application, R Remote enables remote control of R Series Rio3224-D, Rio1608-D, and Ri8-D rack unit head amplifiers directly from a computer.

With R Remote, a live recording system can be created with just R Series I/O racks and a computer running Nuendo Live or similar DAW software. Combined with the I/O racks, R Remote can be used with consoles that up until now have not been able to support remote head amp control, such as the 02R96 or 01V96i. For this application, however, a Dante-MY16-AUD expansion card must be installed in the console. The end user will also be able to operate a stand-alone R Series Dante infrastructure independently from a console.

“There is great potential for advanced systems that provide enhanced portability and expandability,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “The development of R Remote is another example of listening to recommendations from our customers in order to provide them with even more advanced system possibilities.”

Yamaha R Remote will be available today, free of charge, via download at www.yamahaca.com.
