R.L. Drake to Showcase High-Quality, Affordable IP and RF QAM Digital TV Solutions at Cruise Shipping Miami

MIAMISBURG, Ohio — Feb. 12, 2014 — R.L. Drake today announced that it will demonstrate a range of high-quality, affordable IP and RF QAM digital television solutions at Cruise Shipping Miami, March 10-13 in Miami Beach, Fla. Utilizing the company’s MPEG-2/MPEG-4 H.264 video encoders, encoder host platforms, and digital signage encoders, the cruise industry can cost-effectively deliver high-quality SD and HD digital television content to flat-screen displays located in guest rooms and other areas of the ship. The solutions will be on display at Cruise Shipping Miami at the Toner Cable Equipment, Inc./Drake booth 1719.

“High-quality customer service is paramount in the cruise ship industry,” said Andy Ruffin, vice president of sales at Drake. “At Cruise Shipping Miami, we’ll demonstrate how Drake’s IP and RF QAM digital television solutions provide cruise ship operators with the reliability, quality, and affordability needed to deliver first-class entertainment to guests.”

IP Encoding Solutions
A key highlight at the show will be Drake’s modular IP encoder host platform, the EH244-IP, which supports MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 H.264 video encoders. Compatibility with existing equipment, affordable pricing, and a small footprint ensures that the EH244-IP can easily be integrated into any infrastructure.

As a leading video integrator serving the cruise industry, John Boothe, owner of JJOB Technology, said Drake’s commitment to provide the highest quality products and service is key. “Drake is the leading video infrastructure vendor for maritime installations, supporting approximately 80 percent of the RF QAM projects we work on as a systems integrator,” said Boothe. “In addition to viewing Drake as an established provider of RF QAM solutions, many of our customers in the cruise ship industry are now expressing interest in Drake’s IPTV encoders, based on their ability to support up to 12 QAM and SPTS in a single two-rack unit.”

RF QAM Encoding Solutions
At Cruise Shipping Miami, Drake will also demonstrate its proven EH244 RF QAM solution that enables efficient digital video distribution on cruise ships. All of the products are compatible with existing RF QAM distribution systems, lowering the cost of digital video delivery for cruise ship operators.

The SDE24 and SDI24A encoders generate an MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 H.264 video stream derived from an NTSC composite or SDI/HD-SDI source, respectively. The scalable EH244 platform supports up to six encoder modules, offering customers maximum flexibility. All Drake encoder modules support Dolby(R) AC-3 encoding and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II to ensure worldwide compatibility.

All IP and RF QAM encoders include an optional EAS feature that enables the cruise ship captain to interrupt video and audio content on digital TVs to deliver important information to guests.

At Cruise Shipping Miami, Drake will also showcase its high-quality, affordable solution for delivering customized digital signage content to flat-screen displays via legacy coaxial cable networks. The DSE24 can encode a single uncompressed program derived from devices with HDMI, component video, or VGA outputs to HD MPEG-2 video. An internal modulator and low noise upconverter allows cruise ship operators to use their existing legacy fiber/coax networks as distribution channels for digital signage content, opening up additional revenue opportunities.

Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) Teams Up with ATK Audiotek and the NFL to Deliver Fumble Free RF Coordination for Super Bowl XLVIII

For the 18th consecutive year, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, teamed up with ATK Audiotek and Versacom to deliver interference-free RF management for its portion of the Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which included expert on-site frequency management for pre-game and halftime entertainment, as well as several referee microphones.

Preparation for the big game started back in mid-October when PWS General Manager Jim Van Winkle, Brooks Schroeder, lead RF coordinator working with PWS, and Matt Campisi from Versacom met at the stadium with ATK Audiotek’s Paul Liszewski to determine the staffing requirements and locations for the equipment— RF and intercom racks, antennas, cables etc. In addition, Van Winkle worked closely with ATK Audiotek General Manager Brett Valasek in regards to the detailed equipment list for the event.

PWS submitted a list of frequency requirements to the NFL Game Day Frequency Coordinators (GDC) who handled the frequency coordination for the entire event, including coaches’ intercoms, referee mics, network broadcasters, media and entertainment. Karl Voss, the NFL’s lead frequency coordinator, in turn allocated the frequencies PWS needed to seamlessly integrate the entertainment needs with all the other users at the Super Bowl. PWS’ expert on-site team of Schroeder, John Garrido and Mike Ward handled over 80 frequencies to ensure that spectrum users were not interfering with each other during the game’s entertainment segments.

“Karl Voss is the protector of all frequencies for the Super Bowl and does an amazing job in keeping things moving smoothly in what is an unbelievably complex event,” says Van Winkle. “We greatly appreciate Karl’s hard-work, and the entire NFL game day RF coordination program, in accommodating our needs for the big game.”

This year, PWS handled frequencies for Renee Fleming who sang the National Anthem, Queen Latifah who sang America the Beautiful, and all eight microphones and eight in-ear microphones for the half-time show, which featured Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers. In addition, PWS managed frequencies for two referee mics, each equipped with two frequencies.

PWS utilized the Shure AXIENT wireless system due to its ability to provide automatic, fail-over protection via a built-in backup frequency as well as Shure UHF-Rs and PSM-1000 Series in-ear microphones. The team also employed 3732 receivers with 5200 transmitters, along with a range of wireless gear from Sennheiser. Versacom provided a mixture of wireless intercoms, including HME PRO850 and BTR800s from Telex, for the event. PWS’ Domed Helical Antenna was also on-site. In addition, a combination of Domed Helicals and original PWS Helicals were used for the ATK wireless systems on the field.

Wohler 2014 NAB Show Product Preview

During the 2014 NAB Show, Wohler will feature a variety of innovations that reflect the company’s well-established expertise in signal management and monitoring for evolving audio and video formats, as well as its depth of experience in developing fresh, powerful IT- and IP-based solutions for highly efficient media processing in the file-based domain. With its move into the IT/IP realm, Wohler is shifting to a new South Hall location, where the company will highlight key solutions and product developments.

Presentation at the 2014 NAB Show — April 9, 2014
Kirk Marple, chief software architect of Wohler’s RadiantGrid(TM), will present a session titled “Intelligent File-Based Processing: Cost-Effective, Efficient Tools for Broadcasters,” on Wednesday, April 9 from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

AVB Monitoring Option Card
The new AVB Monitoring Option card for Wohler’s flagship AMP2 Series modular audio/video monitoring solution allows media facilities to take advantage of the AVB standard in the monitoring realm. The 2-RU AMP2-E16V has become the industry leader because it provides a complete suite of tools for analyzing and managing audio quality, level, and loudness; metadata; Dolby D, E, and DD+ decoding; and more. Now AMP2-E16V users can simply download the appropriate software update from Wohler and insert the AVB Monitoring Option card into the monitoring unit, and they’ve made their unit AVB-compliant without sacrificing any of their other inputs.

The Wohler AMP2-E16V AVB implementation employs a 100 BaseT Ethernet port and familiar RJ-45 connection. Users can install as many as five AVB cards in the monitoring unit. Each AVB Monitoring Option card decodes two AVB streams of eight channels each (IEC 61883-6 format), and these two streams must be locked to the same media clock. Just like any other module for the AMP2-E16V, the AVB card occupies a single card slot. AVB channels can be mixed, level-adjusted, and monitored just like — and along with — AES, SDI, analog, and other input types. The AMP2-E16V performs automatic sample rate conversion of inputs to the unit’s internal sample clock. AVB channels can be output via AES and analog outputs or re-embedded within an SDI stream.

MPEG DVB-ASI and IPTV Monitors
Wohler MPEG monitors decode and provide convenient at-a-glance monitoring of program content from MPEG-2/4 ASI and Ethernet IP streams, as well as 3G/HD-SDI inputs. The MPEG video monitors identify, decode, and display in high resolution both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 signals (input via BNC or Ethernet) while giving users the ability to browse the PAT, PMT, PID, EIT, and NIT data (both ATSC and DVB tables) for each selected stream. In addition to MPEG ASI and dual-input 3G/HD-SDI with loop-through, the MPEG monitors also accommodate HDMI video and audio with level meters, GPI, and tally.

Convenient monitoring capabilities include Dolby Digital and Digital+ decoding, as well as the capacity to decode as many as 12 audio groups. In-picture level metering of up to 16 channels of audio is provided for both average and PPM (peak) levels with selectable meter scales. At the 2014 NAB Show, Wohler will feature the MPEG-4290, a 4-RU system with two 9-inch screens; the MPEG-3270, a 3-RU system with two 7-inch screens; and the 2-RU MPEG-2443 with four individual 4.3-inch screens.

Insteo, BrightSign, Philips Commercial Signage and Peerless-AV Team to Create DSE 2014 Entry Way Signage

Insteo, BrightSign, Phillips Commercial and Peerless-AV announced today their collaboration to deliver a dramatic ‘Social Buzz’ wall and Entry Archway for DSE 2014. These video walls serve as a welcome to all attendees and highlight top social media posts and photos from Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Flickr.

DSE assembled an all-star team to create the entry display comprised of two video walls at the entryway to DSE 2014. BrightSign is providing its market-leading solid-state players that distribute content to Philips displays secured with Peerless-AV mounts.

The entryway includes two video walls – an elevated, eight-display archway running welcome messaging video loops, and an eye-level social media ‘Buzz Wall’ also comprised of eight displays. Although BrightSign players support HTML5 social media templates from the Insteo library, Insteo instead chose to implement an all-video solution that offers a more dramatic, curated and innovative presentation. Insteo’s creative team uses the powerful BrightSign Network to keep the video walls fresh and up to date.

“Insteo is more commonly known for HTML5 digital content, but our background is originally in motion graphics and animation,” said Jim Nista, CEO & creative director at Insteo. “We recognized that a pre-rendered video loop wouldn’t fit with the need for up-to-date social buzz – but we wanted to showcase more dynamic motion graphics. We’re using BrightSign Network to deliver frequent updates so we can have the best of both – eye-catching rendered video and fresh content.”

Insteo’s staff in Long Beach, California will curate social media content from around the web and render out new videos frequently throughout the show. These videos will push over the BrightSign Network and feed the eye-level displays to keep content relevant. BrightSign players control Ethernet synchronization of brilliant Full HD video wall content, and BrightSign Network provides the ability to send updates remotely.

“We’re dedicated to strengthening partnerships within the digital signage industry and continuing our work with DSE. It is always an honor to be selected by show management for the prestigious responsibility of powering an entry installation that becomes more impressive each year,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “The selection of BrightSign players is a testament to the reliability and flexibility of our solid-state platform.”

In addition to providing video content for the entryway, DSE selected Insteo to create an interactive registration map to illustrate the global origins of show attendees. Motion graphics on the social media wall show attendees how to register on a digital map, located near the entryway. This registration map, created by Insteo and powered by Elo Touch, Peerless-AV and Cradlepoint, allows DSE 2014 visitors to use their smartphones to add themselves to the map to highlight the international diversity of this year’s DSE attendance.

Masque Sound Turns Up the Volume for Touring Production of Musical Sensation, Rock of Ages

When the touring production of the hilarious, five-time Tony® Award-nominated 80’s musical Rock of Ages hit the road to rock its way across America for a third season, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, went along for the ride, supplying a custom audio equipment package to support Sound Designer Craig Cassidy and his team.

Set in 1987 on Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages tells the story of a small town girl who meets a big city rocker at Los Angeles’ most famous rock club, The Bourbon Room. This arena-rock love story is told through the mind blowing, face-melting hits of the greatest bands of the 80’s including, Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and more.

Recreating the heavy, arena-rocking sound that defined the big hair 80’s with a PA system that would be able to move in and out of the theatres quickly enough for the tour’s rigorous schedule was Cassidy’s biggest challenge in designing the sound. To make this happen, Cassidy collaborated with the team at Masque Sound.

“Gary Stocker at Masque Sound was instrumental in creating a tower design that would provide us with the flexibility and sound we needed for the production,” says Cassidy. “Getting the SPL of a rock concert without having the cast run around with handhelds all night long is not an easy task — Masque Sound’s support and technical services played a big part in pulling it off.”

In order to create the hard-rock sound Cassidy envisioned, Masque Sound provided a DiGiCo SD 10 Digital Console for the front of house and a DiGiCo SD 8 at the monitor console. A line array featuring Meyer Sound MICA compact high-powered curvilinear loudspeakers and Meyer Sound 600 HP subwoofers were incorporated into the towers. Masque Sound also provided the production with Sennheiser 5212 transmitters, matching 1046 receivers and coupled them with DPA 4066 omnidirectional headset mics. In addition, Masque Sound supplied its expert frequency coordination services for the over 30 channels of wireless that are being used for the show.

“I have enjoyed a long relationship with Masque Sound, and it is my shop of choice,” adds Cassidy. “I can really lean on the staff’s expertise in a lot of areas. If I run into any problems, they always have someone there who can solve it for me. They are really top notch.”

About Masque Sound
Founded in 1936 by a trio of Broadway stagehands, Masque Sound evolved into one of NYC’s most successful theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design companies specializing in theatrical, house of worship, sporting, corporate, TV broadcast and live concert events. The company also operates Florida-based Professional Wireless Systems, a leader in the development and implementation of wireless technology. Credits range from major Broadway shows and tours including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Lion King,” “Jersey Boys,” “Memphis,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Newsies,” “Once” and “Kinky Boots” to yearly Super Bowl broadcasts and installations of varying sizes, including New York’s New Victory Theater and historic St. Bartholomew’s Church. Revolabs Executive Elite(TM) Wireless Microphone System
At Enterprise Connect, Revolabs demonstrates its new Executive Elite four- and eight-channel wireless microphone systems. Using a new distributed architecture, the system’s remote antenna receiver and base units connect via a standard Cat 6 cable with power over Ethernet (PoE) support to facilitate installations. As a result, the system’s remote antenna receiver unit can be placed in the same room as wireless microphones, easing installation while vastly improving wireless connectivity. Executive Elite’s new redesigned microphones feature an elegant Fortune 500 look and feel, superior audio pickup, improved signal-to-noise ratio, easy operation, and enhanced digital signal communication over wireless links. For longer talk times, the various microphone types allow for up to 12 hours of continual usage and intelligently conserve power when not in use. To reach beyond the system’s standard four or eight microphone channels, the Executive Elite receiver can be synchronized with other systems, allowing up to 80 (Americas) or 160 (rest of world) audio channels for its wireless microphones in any given deployment.

MONTREAL, CANADA — February 12, 2014 — Haivision has unveiled the newest products in the Makito X Series of video encoders/decoders, providing customers with high performance solutions for video distribution, broadcast backhaul, remote monitoring, connecting facilities and Internet streaming.

Designed for the most demanding encoding applications in enterprise, broadcast and federal/military environments, the Makito X Series delivers higher performance, superior quality video, extremely efficient encoding and bandwidth use, and lower latency.

The expanded Makito X Series includes:

  • New Makito X encoder configurations, including the Makito X Single or Dual SDI and Makito X DVI.
  • New ruggedized Makito XR encoders for ground-based deployments that require resilience to harsh environments: Makito XR Harsh Environment and Ruggedized High Profile encoders are built to match the physical and mission-critical requirements of full motion video (FMV) in the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) segment.
  • New Makito X Decoder, a low-latency, High Profile dual channel decoder.

Built on Haivision’s field-proven encoding platform, the Makito X brings users a complete point-to-point video distribution solution with improved user experience, reduced costs and increased channel count. The Makito X encoders include all features from the original Makito encoder, including downscaling, de-interlacing, deblocking, forward error correction (FEC), encryption, closed captioning, and Key Length Value (KLV) metadata for full motion video (FMV) applications.

“With the Makito X series, we are continuing to push the boundaries of encoding technology,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO of Haivision. “By building on the performance, reliability and confidence of a proven platform, the extension of the X Series gives customers a future-proof encoding solution to meet the most demanding streaming video challenges.”

Addressing next generation encoding challenges, every model of the Makito X Series now includes Haivision’s new Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) technology, optimizing performance streaming across the unpredictable Internet by assuring quality of service to deliver the best video stream when faced with packet loss, jitter, latency, and fluctuating bandwidth.
