Fred Falke Dubs Prism Sound’s Lyra the Pinnacle of ADA Conversation

Renowned French DJ, remixer and producer Fred Falke was so bowled over by Prism Sound’s Lyra II audio interface that he bought one after just one listen.

“It simply surpasses every other competitor by far,” he says. “The AD conversion is so clear that recording becomes effortless, and the DA is just unreal: you can hear every little detail in a mix in a way that you never thought was possible. It’s like watching the stars through the Hubble telescope.”

One of the most prolific and in-demand producers around, Fred Falke earned global recognition as a DJ, producer and remixer with his debut release Intro. Now based in Los Angeles, Falke’s career has spanned nearly two decades and he has consistently proven his versatility with releases such as Golden Cage and reworks of Nervo and Robyn tracks. His ability to bridge the gap between pop and electronic dance music is evident with his remixes for artists from Katy Perry and Ke$ha to, more recently, Lana Del Rey, Jason Derulo and Selena Gomez. He has also written and produced for Ellie Goulding and Florrie and co-wrote Amelia Lilly’s track You Bring Me Joy that reached #2 in the UK charts.

Falke says he first came across Prism Sound’s recently introduced Lyra 2 audio interface during a recording session at Metropolis Studios in London.

“It sounded so good that I immediately bought a unit myself,” he says. “I have subsequently gone on to use it on a number of tracks, including remixes of Tiesto’s Redlights and Foxes’ Let’s Go.”

Prism Sound’s Lyra has built up a loyal following among musicians and DJs because it is so portable and versatile – something that Falke says is essential to him. “It doesn’t matter where I’m working, I have this little ‘magic box’ in my bag and can achieve superb recording and mixing,” he says.

He connects the interface via USB to his MacPro, utilising the line-ins and also the preamp inputs. “When mixing, my DAW master out goes into the outboard through line-outs one to two, and comes back into the Lyra line-ins,” he explains.

Ease of use is also high on Falke’s list of criteria. Part of his signature approach is his love of crafting synth sounds and beats with synthesisers, drum machines and samplers.

“They all have a specific sonic signature,” explains Falke. “Instruments and vocals carry emotions. The Lyra manages to capture that with an unmatched perfection. The controller software is a no-brainer, offering the same zero-latency recording as working from a desk.”

In perhaps the ultimate testament to the quality of the Lyra, Falke explains that when he took delivery of it, he listened to many of his favourite songs and tracks through it right away.

“Even though I have heard these songs a million times before, all of a sudden I heard things I never heard before,” he recalls. “It’s hard to describe how good it is; you have to experience it to realize what you’ve been missing: Prism Sound is the pinnacle of ADA conversion.”

Based on the award-winning and critically-acclaimed Orpheus interface, Prism Sound’s Lyra allows music recording professionals to access the power and sophistication of the Orpheus audio path and clock circuitry, but in a smaller package and at a much improved price point.

The Lyra 1 interface has two analogue input channels – one for instrument/line and one for mic/line – plus two DA output channels and optical-only digital I/O. Lyra 2 includes two AD input channels with switchable microphone, instrument or line input modes and four DA output channels. Both versions incorporate new ARM Cortex processor design offering class-compliant USB interfacing that allows for seamless integration with both Macs and PCs. Both versions also offer digital volume control, a low latency ‘console-quality’ digital mixer for foldback monitoring and optical SPDIF capability.

Robert Juliat TIBO LED Profile Fixtures Shine a Light on New Newsroom at KTMD-TV, Houston

Robert Juliat TIBO 533 75w LED Profile lighting fixtures have been installed in a new newsroom at KTMD-TV by project lighting designer/director Bruce Aleksander. KTMD-TV is the Telemundo owned-and-operated station serving Houston.

Aleksander did a complete digital solid-state lighting installation for a new studio layout he designed that’s dedicated to news programming. “Everything was predicated on energy-efficient lighting from the start,” he explains. “Since it was new, we were able to build out the studio without the traditional heavy support for cooling down the lights and the full dimming load normally necessary for an incandescent approach. We used all fluorescent and LED lighting.”

Aleksander evaluated a number of fixtures then concluded that “for hard-edge, profile fixtures, the best bang for the buck came from the Robert Juliat TIBOs.” The TIBO 533 75w LED Profile offers a high-intensity LED array, double condenser optics and extremely low energy consumption. The fixture represents a new look in LED Profile design with a compact, aesthetic silhouette.

The eight TIBOs, which Aleksander obtained from Barbizon Light of Texas, serve primarily as set accent lights. “There are a number of logos and graphic elements on the set, and the TIBOs are perfect for picking them out,” he says. “Where some panels in the background are not well detailed, we used the TIBOs with defocused projection patterns to add texture and shape.”

Aleksander selected daylight-balanced TIBOs for “a much closer match for the video display walls, which are an integral part of the set.” In addition, the daylight-balanced fixtures were chosen because one wall of the newsroom is open with windows “and we wanted to match color temperatures so what the camera sees consistently carries proper color. We also needed to match color temperatures to insure the cameras could be properly white-balanced.”

In reviewing a number of LED profiles on the market Aleksander says “the very high optical quality of the TIBOs distinguished them” from other fixtures. “The patterns projected sharply, the focus was smooth and the beam of light was beautifully consistent edge to edge. With a number of other brands out there, I can look at their fields and see the unevenness where they weren’t able to blend the different emitter fields. But the Juliats have a smooth field and a very even focus field across the entire beam.”

“Not all LED manufacturers have done nearly as well as Robert Juliat,” he notes. “The TIBOs really exceeded my expectations for an LED profile fixture.”

Chris Boyd was the sales person at Barbizon Light of Texas; Robin Crews was the representative at Spectrum Lighting. At KTMD-TV Todd Taylor is the director of technology.

Landmark Oakland Church Gets VARIA

Oakland, CA – February 2014… Bishop Carl Smith is on a mission, and he’s unapologetic. The members of New Birth Church are encouraged not only to attend church, but to become the church by actively working to improve the quality of the lives of those they touch.

Housed in a mid-19th century Catholic Cathedral, New Birth’s 500-seat sanctuary was an acoustically challenged environment when Concord, CA-based Premier Media Integration, Inc., was brought in to design and install new audio, video, and lighting systems and acoustical treatment. Graham Cooper, President of PMI, contacted Rocky Giannetta, Principal of Layer 8 Inc., to assess the room’s acoustics and assist with systems design.

With Giannetta’s acoustical measurements documenting a reverb time of 3.8 seconds, Layer 8 created an EASE model and designed acoustical treatment and loudspeaker system that PMI would install. While the acoustical treatment reduced reverb to around 1.6 seconds, the environment was still challenging enough to demand an audio system that could keep reflections to a minimum.

“The church has beautiful stained glass throughout the structure,” adds Graham Cooper “Our job was to find places to put the panels that would be aesthetically and architecturally acceptable. Padded chairs, carpet, and, of course, people, also help.”

With reverb down to an almost reasonable level, Giannetta specified the new VARIA line array system from Renkus-Heinz. “We knew that despite our best efforts, the room was not going to be acoustically ideal, and we needed to maximize control of the energy,” he explains. “Typical line arrays would only provide the right directivity in one plane. The client wanted a line array system that would provide the output and headroom for the sound they create, and VARIA fit the bill perfectly.”

The system is comprised of six VARIA VAX101 cabinets per side, with three 7-degree boxes on top and three 15-degree boxes underneath. “With the VARIA’s variable pattern control, we were able to configure coverage from 60 degrees on top to 120 degrees on the bottom,” says Giannetta. Two VAX115S subwoofers per side, along with four DRS18-2 subs on the floor, provide low end reinforcement. The system is powered by Lab.gruppen amplification.

“We’ve been using Renkus-Heinz products on a number of projects, and the clients have always been happy with the results,” says Cooper. “The VARIA system does a great job of focusing the sound on the congregation and keeping it off the walls and reflective surfaces, and the speakers integrate nicely with the room’s architecture. Bishop Smith was emphatic about maintaining the building’s aesthetics, and the VARIA system looks great.”

Giannetta agrees, “the VARIA system was an ideal choice for this project.”
