ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K Used at Justin Bieber’s Australia Concert

Fremont, CA – Blackmagic Design today announced that ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was used at one of Justin Bieber’s recent Melbourne, Australia concerts, providing all of the concert’s video switching. Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Studio Pro, SmartView Duo and SmartView HD products were also used for the live event and recording of the concert.

The concert, sponsored by Vevo TV, was held for a special fan of Justin’s who had recently been in a car accident and was unable to attend his main concerts held in Australia. The fan, along with fifty of her friends and family, were treated to a private concert, which was also captured for future replay on Vevo TV.

Rapid TV and Power AV, Melbourne, Australia based video production suppliers, handled the live switching facilities for the event with Blackmagic Design equipment provided by New Magic Australia. Peter Morris of Rapid TV was the OB manager for the concert and said the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was used with five HD cameras. Feeds from the cameras were switched to a number of large monitors around the stage and then pulled together into a line cut.

“This was a very special night for Justin’s fans, and he wanted to provide the feeling of a full concert but still have a small, intimate setting,” said Peter. “There were 50 fans there and a crew of approximately 30, so it was a very intensive production. It had to be a high quality live broadcast and we had to get high quality concert footage. That is why we chose the ATEM switchers, because it gave us broadcast quality switching that could handle the scope of the event, and they were reliable,” finished Peter.

Grant Villiers from Power AV commented, “We had two fixed, one dolly, one steadi and one crane camera, all being fed into the ATEM. These were all straight shots, without any graphics or effects, and they were sent to several large monitors around the stage, as well as to SmartView HD and SmartView Duo monitors used by the crew. A cut of the show was recorded in a HyperDeck Studio Pro, with a second being used as backup.”

ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K is an advanced Ultra HD live production switcher with 6G-SDI technology that is available for only US$2,495. It includes ten independent 6G-SDI inputs each with frame sync, built in DVE with zoom, scale and rotate, four upstream chroma keyers, three independent aux outputs with front panel control and a large media pool that holds both still frame graphics as well as motion video clips. ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K also features a strong and elegant machined aluminum front design, the ATEM Software Control Panel for complete control of the switcher from a laptop or desktop computer and built in multi view monitoring so customers can view sources on a single SDI monitor or HDMI TV.

“The ATEM was perfect for the event. I was able to work in 25p through the whole workflow and I had all the inputs and outputs I could have wanted. The whole Blackmagic setup worked great,” finished Grant.

NAB DEBUT FOR SAMASERVE & NIPROS CAMERA SYSTEM

LAS VEGAS, NAB BOOTH #N314: At the upcoming 2014 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in April, Samaserve, the exclusive North and South American sales and support company for the Nipros line of camera-agnostic systems and accessories, will show attendees how to get the most out of their 4K digital cinema cameras while simultaneously producing a 4K and full (1920x1080p) high-definition production.

“The Nipros System empowers users to maximize the potential of any camera and, for any type of shooting situation,” said industry veteran Bob Ott, a Samaserve co-founder. “With optical and multi-core camera adapters, viewfinders, camera sleds, mounting plates, shoulder camcorder mounting accessories, and audio mixers, Nipros covers a tremendous range of production needs.”

In Booth N314, Samaserve will spotlight its flagship Nipros LS-750/GT Camera-Mounted Fiber Adapter System, which works with any 4K camera-acquiring and flawlessly passing simultaneous uncompressed 4K and HD signals – The new LS-750/GT camera-mounted fiber adapter system provides users with five 3G SDI downstreams directly out of the camera, as well as one return of 3G/HD-SDI/SD-SDI signals. All types of 4K plus HD, or five separate HD streams, can be transported simultaneously, with the ability to mix the five asynchronous 3G/HD/SD streams independently

The innovative fiber adapter also offers: Active loop-through output for each 3G-SDI input; the ability to transmit complete SDI signal payloads, including embedded audio as well as all ancillary data; Tally (green and red) signal transmission; Time code (TC) Input/Output; two lines of Intercom (PROD & ENG); full two-way camera RCP remote control; LANC remote control; LAN (Ethernet) IP communication link (100Base-TX); HD-SDI/SD-SDI & VBS/HD-Y return video transmission; high capacity power supply capability for the camera plus accessories. The optical fiber conversion system also enables signals to be transported (from camera to OB truck and/or from cameras to studio control room) up to 2 Km (1.2 miles) with 60W power or 200m (more than 650 feet) with 300W power supply over standard SMPTE 311M hybrid optical fiber cable.

“The LS-750/850GT fiber adapter system is designed to be completely flexible with all camera manufacturers,” said Sal Sandoval, another Samaserve co-founder. “Users can produce all types of projects with different cameras and ultimately get a faster return on their investment since they aren’t using a system that only works with one camera model. There is no need to maintain different fiber adapter systems for each camera manufacturer. The system supports five 3G HDSDI signals – that’s full 4K (using up to 4 HDSDI 3G connections) plus an HDSDI connection for live, simultaneous, HD transmission. This (5) 3G SDI capability offers overall simplicity to the system. Additionally, Nipros systems do not require additions like power blocks, power enhancers, etc.

The Nipros HDS 300 Camera Sled:
This is a professional studio build-up rig designed to quickly convert most compact handheld or shoulder type camcorders from Canon, Panasonic, Phantom (Vision Research), JVC, Hitachi, Ikegami and Sony. The sled’s rugged aluminum die-cast chassis is designed to handle daily production tasks with a variety of professional functions that supports a wide range of optional equipment. This takes a non-studio, camera / camcorder and makes it ready for the Broadcast / Professional user.

Also included with the sled are multiple attachment points for accessories, such as the Nipros 7 inch, HDF-700 View Finder, and other essential items

Nipros ES-Series of Multicore Systems:
The Nipros ES-500 (for shoulder mount camera); ES-600 (base station, compatible with both 500 and 300); and ES-300 (for handheld camcorder) will also be on display. ES-series multi-core camera conversion systems provide a cost-effective fully featured HD/SD SDI studio camera conversion solution for all types of handheld or shoulder mount cameras/camcorders. They can be used to transfer two lines of HD or SD SDI signals through a specially developed multi-core cable that incorporates two HD/SD SDI cables within a 26pin multi-core cable assembly.

This means both camera and return signals can be HD/SD SDI. It also supports video component signals, HD-Y return, camera remote control, tally, time code, power, etc., – all of which are transported down the one single multi-core cable. It offers high-quality and cost-effective field and studio production performance and an extendable distance between camera adaptor and base station of more than 50 meters (with a 50W DC power supply).

Nipros Shoulder-Mount Rigs:
The NEW Nipros ST-7S300 shoulder-mount rig is designed to offer an elegant, ergonomically pleasing solution unlike any other rig on the market today.

New HD Viewfinders/Monitors:
Samaserve will exhibit a brand new line of viewfinders and on-camera monitors for all types of live and studio applications. For example, the new Nipros HDFR500 5-inch full HD (1920×1080) unit provides the full color gamut HD image on screen without scaling, and supports 3G SDI inputs as well as HDMI inputs, SDI outputs, and analog inputs.

New Nipros Camera System Accessories:
Samaserve’s NAB Booth (N314) will also feature a full line of Nipros camera accessories, such as a rear lens controller (for zoom and focus demand) and several viewfinder interfaces for manufacturer-specific cameras that provide return video. This includes optional full lens control with the AS-1P for zoom and the FR-P1 for focus/iris.

Note: Samaserve will conduct a live demonstration (TBD) of an end-to-end 4K workflow, in tandem with Canon, whereby a Nipros LS-750/GT camera-mounted fiber adapter tied to a Canon CF500 digital cinema camera will be shown acquiring and sending 4K raw information. The resulting images will be projected on a large screen within the Las Vegas Convention center.

Masque Sound Takes Flight With Peter and the Starcatcher

When PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, the five-time Tony
Award®-winning musical play written by Tony® Award-nominee Rick Elice and directed by Tony® Award-winner Roger Rees and Tony® Award-nominee Alex Timbers, set out on its first U.S. national tour Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was along for the ride with a custom audio equipment package to help bring Designer Darron L West’s Tony® Award-winning sound design alive.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, a grown up’s prequel to Peter Pan, is the innovative and imaginative musical play based on the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. A company of a dozen actors play more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? This epic origin story of popular culture’s most enduring and beloved character proves that your imagination is the most captivating place in the world.

Both West and Masque Sound have been involved in the play from its original production at NY Theatre Workshop to its successful run on Broadway, as well as its post-Broadway run at New World Stages, so collaborating on the tour together was a natural fit.

“I depend on Masque Sound to provide me with the gear I need for my shows, so when the PETER AND THE STARCATCHER tour became official, there was no doubt that it was going to be the shop I called on to take the show on the road,” says West. “When a problem arises that needs to be solved, there is never a moment that I feel like I can’t call on Masque Sound to provide a solution, equipment recommendations, etc. Scott Kalata at Masque Sound has been great to us since the very beginning.”

West’s goal for PETER AND THE STARCATCHER was to try to create and preserve a simple and minimally invasive design. “We wanted the play to feel like it was an old Victorian show, so we thought a lot about our microphone choices and speaker positions,” he says. “The show features two musicians and ‘musicians towers’ in direct view of the audience, and we designed the system to sound as though the audio was coming from these points, since the musicians are crucial to how the show is received by the audience. We utilized our surround sound capabilities through a story-driven approach, and we really tried to keep the audio as centralized around the sound effects and music that those musicians were creating.”

In order to create the atmosphere that West was looking for on the tour, Masque Sound provided a DiGiCo SD10 digital console. The SD10 is a super-flexible, complete integrated system powered by Stealth Digital Processing and floating point Super FPGA technology. According to West, “There is a lot of really intricate reverb work that happens in the show that is really being driven by the SD10. The SD10 works incredibly well with the theatre software we are using and is crucial to the show’s success.”

Additional equipment provided by Masque Sound includes both Meyer Sound and D&B speaker rigs, as well as wireless gear from Sennheiser.

Putting together a traveling production is not without its challenges and West credits Masque Sound as well as his associate Charles Coes for helping to pull it all together. “We really needed to figure out the amount of gear we needed and how to set it up for 22 different sized venues for a show of this magnitude,” concludes West. “Masque Sound has a great crew at the shop and we really depend on them to bounce ideas off of and to figure out exactly how to put on a production of this size. Between Masque Sound and the Proof crew who built the towers, we couldn’t believe how incredible it worked. Charles did an amazing job in designing the tower and putting it all together.”

Tour dates and additional show information can be found at www.peterandthestarcatcher.com.

Planar Showcases the Industry’s Largest Interactive Display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass

LAS VEGAS, February 12, 2014–Today, at the Digital Signage Expo 2014 in Las Vegas, Planar Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLNR), a global leader in display and digital signage  technology, unveiled the breakthrough 84-inch 4K Planar® UltraRes™  Touch with ERO™ featuring Corning® Gorilla® Glass.

By combining Planar’s exclusive Extended Ruggedness and Optics (ERO) optical glass bonding technology with Gorilla Glass, an industry-leading cover solution, the 84-inch 4K Planar UltraRes Touch is durable and scratch resistant,  making it ideal for digital signage and public venue applications. Planar UltraRes Touch now also supports up to 32 simultaneous touch points, offering the ultimate solution for multi-user applications, including collaboration walls and touch tables.

“The addition of Corning Gorilla Glass to our proprietary ERO optical bonding technology further enhances the durability and visual performance of the Planar UltraRes Touch display,” said Becky Connors, product marketing manager at Planar Systems. “By dramatically increasing the number of touch points, we’ve made it possible for organizations to create highly immersive and engaging experiences.”

For retail stores, museums, hospitality and corporate lobbies, Planar UltraRes Touch offers the durability and flexibility needed for a robust interactive experience.  Planar UltraRes Touch also provides the key features necessary for corporate meeting rooms where touch capability enhances group collaboration.

Built for Unsurpassed Durability and Performance

With Planar’s ERO technology, Corning Gorilla Glass is optically bonded to the LCD cell using a proprietary process unique to Planar, providing exceptional durability and performance.  The ERO process keeps out dust and moisture and improves image contrast by eliminating the air gap between the display and the glass. Gorilla Glass is more than four times stronger than tempered soda-lime glass, which enables a substantially-thinner design, and it better resists scratches that can cause the glass to break. Due to the Gorilla Glass’ thinness, parallax and the resulting touch errors are reduced, weight is decreased, while touch sensitivity and display responsiveness are improved.

“We are thrilled for the launch of Planar’s 84-inch UltraRes Touch featuring the world’s largest piece of Gorilla Glass,” said David Loeber, business director for Large Cover Glass at Corning Incorporated. “Planar’s expertise in commercial signage hardware and optical bonding paired with Corning’s expertise in advanced glass solutions yields an innovative product and a great opportunity for collaboration.”

Designed for Style and Function

Planar UltraRes Touch offers a sleek design with an attractive, narrow bezel of just 1.3 inches, providing an elegant backdrop for stunning ultra-high resolution content. It has a mounted depth of only 3.6 inches, making it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for protruding objects in public environments. The display supports both landscape and portrait orientation, and a logo-free bezel makes it equally practical to use the display in either mode.

With a native 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160, Planar UltraRes Touch provides four times the resolution of a full HD display for advanced clarity—even at short viewing distances for touch users. And with optically-clear Gorilla Glass, every detail is displayed with outstanding color rendition, contrast, and resolution.

Planar UltraRes Touch displays come standard with Planar MediaPlex™ software, which allows up to eight directly attached sources to be viewed, four at a time, in 42-inch diagonal full HD quadrants. Upon command, any of the quadrants can be upscaled to fill the entire 4K display area. Available only from Planar, this feature provides a unique way to display both touch and non-touch content on the same display.

Planar UltraRes Touch displays featuring Corning Gorilla Glass and 32 touch points will be available through Planar’s global network of authorized resellers in the second calendar quarter of 2014. Visit Booth #405 at the Digital Signage Expo 2014 to learn more about the Planar UltraRes Touch and to see a demonstration. Additional information is available at http://www.planar.com/ultrares.

The Planar Simplicity Series now features four sizes, 32” and 42”, introduced in Fall 2013, and 46” and 55” announced today.

“Planar Simplicity Series displays are a sleek, commercial-quality digital signage display solution that’s both economical and easy to deploy, making it the perfect canvas for commercial content,” said Becky Connors, product marketing manager at Planar Systems. “And with the availability of the 46” and 55” sizes, we’ve now expanded the series, offering our customers a broad range of choices for their digital signage needs.”

The Planar Simplicity Series redefines simple signage, both in terms of functionality and design. With built-in media playing, the cost and complexity of installing third-party media players is eliminated. Planar Simplicity Series displays are easy to install and allow users to create and display content using tools they already have—including videos, photography from cell phone cameras, stock photos and music libraries.

From a single-display installation to a multi-display network, the Planar Simplicity Series was designed to bring simplicity to nearly every digital signage project. The displays are highly versatile, supporting playback of a wide variety of media formats. They also come with a full array of inputs and can be controlled remotely through LAN or RS-232.

In terms of design, the displays feature an elegant, slim profile—less than 1.7” deep— blending naturally into any environment and achieving compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for protruding objects in public spaces. In addition, the bezels contain no distracting logos, keeping the focus on the content itself.

With prices starting at $595, the Planar Simplicity Series extends the benefits of digital signage to a wider range of organizations, including those with limited budgets. Moreover, the displays use LED backlight technology allowing the displays to operate at industry-low levels of power consumption, making them highly energy efficient.

Planar Simplicity Series displays are available through Planar’s network of authorized resellers. Visit Planar’s You Tube channel to watch a video about the Planar Simplicity Series or visit www.planar.com/simplicity for more information.
