Sabaton storms ahead with Sennheiser

Old Lyme, CT, February 19, 2014: Swedish heavy metal act Sabaton are currently preparing to head stateside in April to join two other bands – American metallers Iced Earth and the Dutch metal band Revamp – for the Worldwide Plagues tour which takes them to all four corners of the US and Canada. Sabaton will be using the tour to support their latest DVD, Swedish Empire Live. Filmed in front of 600,000+ enthusiastic fans at their headlining festival appearance at Poland’s Woodstock festival, Swedish Empire Live captures the band’s high-energy live stage show celebrating the triumph of the human spirit. Sabaton, who perform with a full complement of Sennheiser microphones and wireless systems, will be returning to European soil at the end of May where they will be headlining at some of Europe’s biggest heavy metal festivals.

Formed in 1999, in Falun, Sweden, the band’s massive popularity has remained unscathed even though many of the original members have chosen different directions. Band spokesman and bassist Pär Sundström and lead singer Joakim Brodén, whose distinctive vocals have characterised the Sabaton sound from the very beginning, remain at the core of the new line-up announced in April 2012.

When it comes to choice of equipment, microphones are a subject close to the band’s heart (not to mention vocal chords…). Sabaton uses Sennheiser microphones throughout, and for good reason according to monitor engineer Otto Kroymann. “Joakim Brodén, our lead singer, has such a wide dynamic range that we have had real problems finding a suitable microphone,” he explained. “However, when we had the chance to test the Sennheiser SKM 2000 wireless system combined with the MMD 945 capsule, we knew that our search was over. The microphone is really well suited to Joakim’s dynamic range and the sonic quality is exactly what both engineers – me on monitors and Elvis [Elfstrom] at FoH – were looking for.”

Brodén himself is very happy with the results. “I liked the feel of it from the start,” he said. “It has just the right balance for my style.” He uses a total of three handheld SKM 2000 / MMD 945 systems during the show as they have to be changed regularly to keep them dry.

As a result of this positive experience, it was decided to switch the rest of the band over to Sennheiser vocal microphones as well. “The audio quality and tone were just perfect for the whole show,” reported Kroymann. “In fact, we are also using the SK 2000 beltpack transmitters for our guitars and bass in combination with the SKM 2000/MMD 945 microphones – this was a solid choice for us from an audio point of view and also meant that we could benefit from the integrated antenna combiner of the EM 2050 and reduce the problems we had previously with RF interference.”

From here it was a logical step to move the drummer over to Sennheiser as well. “Personally, I always liked the evolution 900 Series for drums, so it was an easy choice to switch to Sennheiser for our drum kit. Once again it has been proven throughout countless shows that the high-quality sound and robust build of these mics make them a great choice for us. All in all, the entire Sennheiser package that we are using for Sabaton is working really well for our shows.”

However, Kroymann was quick to note that the sonic side of the deal is only part of the story. “In the touring industry, a lot can depend on the personal relationship with a company such as Sennheiser,” he noted. “It’s important to have the security and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that help is never far away should you need it. Sennheiser has given this peace of mind every step of the way. It’s a very good feeling to work with a company that is both willing and able to go the extra mile for us.”

Sabaton built their reputation by singing almost exclusively about historical wars and battles, a decision that was triggered after seeing the 1999 Academy Award-winning film, ‘Saving Private Ryan’. “For us it means a lot more to write about actual historical events than to make up stories,” says Pär Sundström. Topics are thoroughly researched to ensure the songs paint accurate and objective portraits of the historical event in question. Sabaton host their own three-day festival, Sabaton Open Air, in their home town of Falun during the summer, and have recently returned from their fourth annual Sabaton Cruise on the Baltic Sea, an event which sold out this year in less than a week!

Vinten Radamec now shipping the game-changing Absolute Positioning System

Bury, St Edmunds, England – Vinten Radamec®, a Vitec Group Company and world leader in robotic camera support systems, announces the availability of its ground-breaking Absolute Positioning System (APS) navigation system.

The APS, which was awarded the coveted “Best of IBC2012″ award when its beta model debuted at IBC, was praised for being a game changing, smart and valuable product. It also received the TV Technology Star Award at NAB 2013.

The revolutionary APS integrates seamlessly with Vinten Radamec’s Fusion robotic pedestals and delivers unrivalled positional accuracy and operational flexibility never before possible with robotic camera support pedestals. A Fusion pedestal equipped with APS no longer relies on a floor target or tile for navigation and positioning, even when switching from manual to robotic mode.

Instead, it detects unobtrusive, passive retro-reflective targets placed in the studio environment using a scanning laser-based measurement system. This frees up the whole studio floor for the pedestal while removing the need to go through time-consuming retargeting routines.

“We’re delighted the system is now available to all of our key markets,” said Karen Walker, robotics commercial manager for Vinten Radamec. “We have already received orders from broadcasters around the world, and anticipate a high demand, as APS is one of the most advanced products on the market.”

The APS removes all of the operational challenges associated with targeting pedestals using a floor target. It is available as both a factory-fit option on the Fusion FP-188 pedestal, or as an upgrade for existing FP-188 or FP-145 pedestals.

APS system is now available from Vinten Radamec and its partners.

Haivision’s Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) Tames Public Internet Connections to Allow Consistent, High Quality Video Streaming

Makito X Series of encoders and decoders now powered by SRT technology

MONTREAL, CANADA — February 19, 2014 — Haivision’s Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) technology is now available at no additional charge on all Makito X Series encoders and decoders, providing high quality, low cost video transport over the Internet.

Designed to deliver the best video quality at all times, SRT optimizes video streaming performance across unpredictable Internet networks, where packet loss, jitter and bandwidth fluctuations can severely affect the viewing experience. By combining end-to-end security, resiliency and dynamic endpoint adjustment, SRT tames common Internet streaming challenges by detecting network conditions in real time and realigning the stream to deliver the highest quality video to viewers. Now unique to the Makito X Series, the benefits of SRT technology will be applied to Haivision’s broader ecosystem of solutions.

One of the largest banks in Denmark, Jyske Bank, is using Haivision’s Makito X encoders with SRT to broadcast its financial news channel – Jyske Bank TV – to online audiences and displays in 120 branches across the country. Steen Mertz, head of communications technology at Jyske Bank commented:

“Haivision’s Makito X with SRT technology delivers a reliable, very high quality 24/7 live stream over the Internet from our news studio at NASDAQ MarketSite in New York’s Times Square to Jyske Bank’s corporate production center in Denmark. The end result is a very cost effective solution with remarkable quality at low bitrates.”

Using Haivision’s SRT, customers can gain significant operational flexibility and cost savings by eliminating the need to rely on satellite or dedicated network infrastructure. With SRT, organizations can now:

  • Stream events from any venue regardless of unreliable Internet connections
  • Monitor remote facility feeds without dedicated network provisioning, avoiding long lead times and costly annual contracts
  • Increase content programming while eliminating the need for satellite links that include high hourly charges
  • Introduce live video to digital signage networks without investing in additional infrastructure costs

“Makito X with SRT delivers the cleanest HD video over the dirtiest networks,” said Peter Maag, chief marketing officer at Haivision. “We debuted SRT at IBC 2013 where it allowed us to continuously stream from a hotel to the show floor over highly congested networks without special network accommodations. Now, we’re harnessing SRT within our Makito X Series to help customers successfully stream video in any Internet environment.”

Video Clarity NAB Product Preview

RTM Reduced-Reference Capability for Content Distributors
At the 2014 NAB Show, Video Clarity will showcase reduced-reference operating mode, the newest enhancement to its RTM real-time audio and video monitoring solution. Reduced-reference mode is intended for secondary content distributors such as cable, IPTV, direct broadcast, and satellite providers that receive programs from content originators and deliver them to the end customer. Unlike content originators, which can compare the entire original source signal to the entire processed signal nonstop in real time (i.e., full reference), content distributors do not have access to the original source signal. With RTM’s reduced-reference mode, content distributors can now use RTM to measure parts of the incoming signal against data sent from the originator (i.e., reduced reference), thus instituting an intelligent, accurate way of assessing signal quality and identifying faults.

When a content originator sends a satellite feed to secondary distributors, a device on the content originator end sends out a small amount of data via the Internet about portions of the source signal. Secondary distributors may subscribe to that data stream so that when they receive a satellite feed from the content originator, their RTM unit will compare the incoming video signal with the Internet data about the original source signal. RTM tests portions of the signal for video and audio quality and compares it with the pieces of reference data from the Internet (i.e., reduced reference), looking for noticeable differences such as breakups, freeze-frames, and black frames. RTM automatically records faults based on preset error thresholds so that the content distributor can take appropriate action.

All feeds and returns ride on the original camera cable and can be deployed to distances of up to 6 miles (10 kilometers) with local power, or up to 1,600 feet (500 meters) when powered remotely from the base station. The rugged, reliable Caddie units are easy to set up and troubleshoot, thanks to their modular structure and Bluebell Opticom transport modules.

New 4K Studio Caddie With Pull-Out Electronics Drawer
Building on the success of the award-winning 4K Studio Caddie, Joseph Fiber Solutions (JFS) will introduce at the 2014 NAB Show an improved version that employs a pull-out electronics drawer. All electronics are removable from the base for fast and easy reconfigurations and repairs, keeping the camera setup intact for quick turnarounds. The system is compatible with any 4K box camera and is user-customizable for different camera requirements. The unit is fully compatible with the new Caddie Series Modular case and power options. Signals include camera control, two returns, and five 3Gb/s video sends as standard, plus intercom and audio feeds.

Digital Fiber Transport Series DFT-8 and DFT-12 EXP
The DFT-8 is a 1-RU low-cost option for bidirectional flow of eight video signals on a signal fiber. (A dual fiber redundancy option is available.) Paths may be user-configurable in pairs of two for any order of send and receive requirements. The product includes redundant power supplies for total backup of critical paths.

The DFT-12 EXP is the newest addition to the DFT Series, and it features 12 paths of video over single or dual fibers and is user-configurable in pairs of two for any combination of send and receive requirements. Additional options are audio, MADI, RTS intercom, and data modules that are fitted into the front four slots.

The DFT Series provides the best customer-configurable signal transport package for its size. DFT units are perfect for ENG, small stadiums, and anywhere else that a simple point-to-point solution is required. All feature redundant power supplies for total backup of critical paths.
