LynTec Products on Display at USITT 2014

Remote Power Control Mobile (RPCM)
LynTec’s all-new, award-winning Remote Power Control Mobile (RPCM) is the first intelligent power distribution panel to bring three new features to the mobile power distribution market. First, the RPCM uses switch-grade motorized circuit breakers to provide remotely managed electrical protection and on/off control within a single enclosure. Second, the unit offers current monitoring at the branch circuit level — enabling real-time current draw on a branch breaker, phase, or panel basis in addition to notification alarms that alert users of electrical panel anomalies via text or email. Third, the RPCM’s built-in Web server enables users to monitor and control distribution with ease, directly on the network, from a Web interface on any browser-enabled smart device. RPCM also interfaces with most third-party control systems using IP, DMX, and sACN protocols.

Ideal for temporary live events in settings including houses of worship, stadiums, and theaters, the RPCM provides direct on/off control for LED lighting and takes loads out of standby mode by directly shutting down circuits — reducing energy and system maintenance costs, and facilitating more sustainable setups within a portable, road case design.

Remote Power Controller (RPC) — New Version!
LynTec’s Remote Power Controller (RPC) Series Panel version 2 combines the latest motorized breaker technology with a new and improved controller featuring more memory, a faster processor for real-time monitoring down to the circuit level, and the capacity to use multiple control protocols simultaneously — now including sACN. These new features complement the device’s onboard server with network or smart-device access, load-specified switch-grade motorized circuit breakers, built-in auto-off brownout protection using controlled circuit breaker shutdown and restart, optional sequential circuit level on/off capabilities, and ability to interface with third-party control systems via contact closure, TCP/IP, DMX, or RS-232.

This new version also provides the market’s only auto-on function to activate egress lighting via contact closure inputs from fire alarms in the event of an emergency. Supporting UL 924 requirements, the upgrade replaces the need for separate emergency lighting panels and high voltage switches. The software also turns on lighting circuits regardless of control protocol or zone assignment — similar to the function of existing emergency-off or kill features used for silencing sound reinforcement systems during alarms.

RPCR Relay Panel
Ideal for houses of worship, schools, performing arts centers, auditoriums, and other large assembly spaces, LynTec’s RPCR is the only relay panel built specifically for the entertainment industry. Based on LynTec’s popular RPC series panel, the RPCR brings branch circuit control and monitoring to any existing breaker panel, regardless of brand, make, or model. The unit combines relay functionality with a built-in Web server to provide remote electrical control to applications, including LED lighting, powered amplifiers, and energy management programs. Additionally, a Web-enabled browser-based interface allows users to set up, troubleshoot, control, and monitor relay status remotely across existing networks — resulting in simpler, more efficient power management from any computer, tablet, or handheld smart device. The point-and-click interface enables users to set up zones easily, perform sequential on/off switching and scheduling, activate emergency overrides, and provide dependable brownout protection.

Archimedia Technology at the 2014 NAB Show

Conceived at last year’s NAB Show out of the need to deliver and read files originating from 4K cameras, Archimedia Technology offers a range of tools that allows video engineers and archivists to access, play, manage, and test files in mastering formats, including JPEG 2000, ultimately making content deliverable more quickly at higher quality. In its inaugural run at the NAB Show, Archimedia invites visitors to its booth to experience the power of this unparalleled line of tools on HD and UHD screens, including the foundation of its product line, the Archimedia Master Player.

Archimedia Master Player
At the 2014 NAB Show, Archimedia will display its inaugural product, the Archimedia Master Player. Designed for video engineers, producers, directors, manufacturers, and archivists who work with video mastering formats such as JPEG 2000, Archimedia Master Player is the first software player to support all common master formats in use around the world today — including the long-awaited, studio-driven SMPTE IMF — and the first to allow users to view, test, and measure archival-quality files on a standard UHD/HDTV and traditional SDI equipment. Even XYZ files such as DPX and TIFF can be viewed on an RGB projector or TV that many people already own. This revolutionary capability not only makes content deliverable more quickly at higher quality, but also makes it unnecessary to create and store the content in other formats. The latest release contains features that make the player a true 4K-era replacement for videotape machines for master-grade quality control and archiving functions. Key among them is the ability to control audio and video remotely using RS-422 jog/shuttle wheels, with smooth scrub sounds for all supported formats in slow-motion, forward, and reverse. The Archimedia Master Player is available in both HDTV and 4K/UHDTV/Digital Cinema versions.

Archimedia Workstations
Visitors to the Archimedia booth at the 2014 NAB Show will get a close look at Archimedia Workstations driven by Archimedia’s breakthrough Master Player software. For QC operators, producers, directors, archivists, managers, and other media professionals in the digital cinema and broadcast industries, Archimedia Workstations take the guesswork and headache out of buying hardware for critical viewing and quality control of master media files. Available in broadcast HD, 2K Digital Cinema, and 4K/UHDTV versions, each Archimedia Workstation comes with a state-of-the-art HDMI output up to 4K@60Hz, 70 alignment test patterns up to 4:4:4 12 bits, and remote control support for the user’s choice of jog/shuttle/scrub device by Sony 9-pin protocol. Optional HD-SDI, 4K-SDI, and Quad 4K-SDI cards are available for SDI monitoring, and an optional Fibre Channel card enables use with a storage area network. Optional advanced test patterns up to 4:4:4 12 bits allow the most sophisticated users to set up critical workflows and systems.

Archimedia HD, 4K, and Quad 4K SDI Cards
At the 2014 NAB Show, Archimedia will display the Archimedia HD-SDI, 4K-SDI, and Quad 4K-SDI cards for the Archimedia Master Player. The cards, made by Bluefish444, include a Master Player installer that will flash the cards’ firmware so that they behave properly under control of the Master Player. By deploying the cards, video engineers and archivists can use an Archimedia Workstation as a HD or cinematic-quality videotape player or disk-based SDI video server. (The most sophisticated users could even deploy the cards with the Archimedia Master Player software on a standard Windows(R) 7 or 8 computer.) Under the control of the Archimedia Master Player, the user’s HDTV or UHDTV can display a video file at the same frame rate as the original when in full-screen mode, marking the first time that an HDMI monitor and SDI monitor can be faithfully compared up to 4K resolution alongside a computer desktop. For quality control, the file’s technical metadata can be viewed while the file is playing.

Archimedia Advanced Test Suite
Along with other products that accompany the Archimedia Master Player, Archimedia will demonstrate the Archimedia Advanced Test Suite, a set of advanced test patterns developed by renowned video test and measurement company VideoQ specifically for aligning monitors precisely and pushing codec systems to the limit. Designed for use with the Archimedia Master Player and available in HD and 4K versions, the Archimedia Advanced Test Suite allows users to test, align, configure, troubleshoot, and stress any equipment with an SDI or HDMI input. Such devices include encoders, transmitters, video recorders, monitors, projectors, standards converters, editors, and ingest and capture devices. When combined with partner VideoQ’s VQMA-3 software analyzer and one of Archimedia’s SDI conversion cards, the Master Player and Advanced Test Suite offer the industry’s first full-featured test environment that is far less costly and far easier to transport than previous comparable test environments.

Autoscript Launches WinPlus Remote

Unique, mobile teleprompting system brings speed and accuracy to field operations

TWICKENHAM, UK
Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, has announced the launch of WinPlus Remote, an iOS-based teleprompting system that delivers up-to-date scripts to users in the field, anywhere in the world. The technology is also suited to remote news bureaus and smaller newsroom operations.

When WinPlus Remote is installed on a networked PC in the production facility, the latest version of the script can be seen by journalists on location, as well as in the studio. The software enables the script to be automatically uploaded to an FTP site where it can be downloaded onto an iPad by talent in the field and kept constantly updated. WinPlus Remote, developed by market leader Autoscript, works in conjunction with an iOS app, picoPrompt, and is supplied with a hand control.

“There have been iPad prompting apps on the market for some time,” says Robin Brown, product manager, Autoscript. “However, the link to the newsroom has been missing, which effectively means that there is no access to live, updated scripts on location. Now, with WinPlus Remote, field talent can quickly and easily download the latest script from the FTP site by simply connecting their iPads to the network.

“This brings both speed and efficiency to remote staff, as well as increased accuracy. Instead of having the director conveying the script changes via an ear piece and a journalist having to manually make the changes, this system allows them to refresh the script with the click of a button. In this way they will always have the latest version of the script on their iPad, allowing them to focus on the task at hand, such as reporting on breaking news.”

The WinPlus Remote system is ideal for use in applications where news is being updated constantly, such as sports reporting. It is also suited for use in locations where a prompting system with full camera unit and software products isn’t available or practical. In addition, WinPlus Remote can be used as an add-on in facilities where other prompting software systems already exist.

“You don’t need to be a current WinPlus user to benefit from WinPlus Remote,” adds Brown. “If a newsroom is running other prompting software, WinPlus Remote can be used in parallel. It effectively runs in the background and enables technicians to take the same script as their current prompting solution and upload it to the FTP site where the field talent can access it.”

The system is therefore also ideal for smaller news operations with limited budgets as it is a cost-effective alternative to a full software system.

WinPlus Remote is being officially launched at NAB in April and will be available from Autoscript. picoPrompt can be downloaded via the Apple App Store.

Litepanels has also released an upgrade of their popular 1×1 Traveler Kits to now feature the company’s more cost-effective LS models. The collection of three kits features the company’s signature 1×1 panels in convenient trolley-style hard cases. The 1×1 LS Traveler Duo Kit provides a pair of daylight color balanced 1×1 LS LED fixtures; one Mono Daylight Flood, with a beam angle of 50°, and one Mono Daylight Spot, with a beam angle 30°. The 1×1 LS Traveler Trio Kit offers two Mono Daylight Floods and one Mono Daylight Spot. The third kit in the collection, the 1×1 LS Traveler Trio Plus Kit, features two Bi-Colors, with a 50° beam angle and color adjustment between daylight and tungsten color balance, and one Mono Daylight Flood.

“Our new, more affordably priced 1×1 LS Traveler Kits are the perfect solution for news crews and professional videographers,” added Marchitelli. “They feature Litepanels’ 100 percent to zero dimming, with no noticeable color shift or flicker at any frame rate of shutter angle, and they can be battery powered for field use. Our LS fixtures were designed and priced to meet the needs of field productions, and our LS Kits now make them even easier for our customers to use.”

Get Fiber’d Up

Optical fiber use is heating up just as surely as summer in June. First it was Google Fiber. Then, AT&T. And now, Century Link. Everyone is getting fiber’d up for 4K video and Big Data apps. In about 12 to 18 months, when all those services and more are in full bloom, you’re going to be feeling the heat, too. Here are a couple things you can do between now and then, according to FiberPlex Technologies.

Graft in optical to existing copper infrastructure. Sure, copper’s days are numbered, but you don’t have to rip out all that copper cabling from the ‘80s and ‘90s in one day. Add fiber one branch at a time. FiberPlex’s  SFP/SFP+ modules let you run optical into a copper network by converting between the two.

Beef up fiber capacity without trenching for new fiber cable. FiberPlex’s WDM-16 active wave division multiplexer can run 16 channels at 3 Gb/s each down an existing fiber pair. In fact, one college saved almost $400,000 in trenching costs by using the WDM-16 in front of an existing fiber network installed years ago.

Extend an existing fiber build-out. Add to an existing multi-mode optical fiber network with newer, faster, longer-range single-mode optical fiber. FiberPlex’s FOI-6010 gives you bidirectional communication between the two.

Go for the green. We’re not talking Franklins, either, although the cost of optical cable systems are now on par with copper systems due to advances in fiber and the high cost of copper. Large corporations love green initiatives, and it doesn’t get any greener than optical fiber. Energy efficient. Lower maintenance. Reduced cabling heat. Fiber’s list of green benefits is as long as a warm summer day.

Washington Family Ranch Extends Campus Reach with Barix IP Paging

Outreach ministry informs guests and staff with clarity and consistency across multiple zones

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, February 26, 2014 — The Washington Family Ranch in rural central Oregon had a problem last summer: With 400 youth guests per week, the Young Life-owned ministry camp’s expensive, network-based paging system was failing. Receivers were transmitting live pages in a staggered manner, creating unintelligible messages — along with guest confusion and complaints.

Based on the suggestion of audio engineer/integrator Alan Stricklin, Washington Family Ranch installed a multipoint Barix IP Paging system this off-season. The system is fully tested and ready for the upcoming 13-week season, and delivering punch and clarity at all playout points thanks to low latency and exceptional audio quality.

“Our previous system was billed as Hi-Fi, but it was very hard to understand the messages with the various amps and receivers responding at different times,” said Andrew Pratt, guest services manager at Washington Family Ranch. “This past year we just turned the amps off, which left us exposed on the liability side. We were limited in how to alert our guests if something were to happen.”

Enter Barix courtesy of Stricklin, who also uses Barix solutions at Minnesota Public Radio. The complete solution gives Pratt and his staff a compact, easy-to-use master paging station in the main office that connects over the network to playout points in high-traffic locations. Pages are streamed live to Barix IP audio decoders at these locations, which prepare and deliver the messages over loudspeakers.

The result is clear messages for guests and staff in four dormitories, the main activity center, campus store, snack bar, dining hall, kitchen and main reception building. Pratt notes this is especially important in the event of a dangerous weather or a security situation, given the camp’s rural location.

“The intelligibility is exceptional and all our speakers are firing at the same time,” said Pratt. “We’re confident that wherever guests are standing that they will clearly hear the announcements, instead of trying to translate the messages.”

In addition to quality, Pratt cites low cost and simplicity as major benefits of the Barix IP Paging solution.

“This operates like a set it and forget it system, and I’m excited that it requires minimal management,” said Pratt. “We believe it will be the kind of system where we train people to use it at the beginning of the summer, and that’s it. The low cost of the system makes it seem as though we will absolutely get our money’s worth.”

The complete Barix IP Paging solution installed at Washington Family Ranch includes an Annuncicom PS1 master paging station, and Barix Exstreamer 205 IP audio decoders at playout points — the latter of which include built-in amplifiers to reduce costs and infrastructure. Looking forward, Pratt expects to take advantage of Barix scalability by adding more playout points via additional Exstreamers, and exploring multicast delivery — a Barix specialty — to minimize network bandwidth.
