Sound Designer Tony Meola: Meyer Sound Constellation Adds Dimension to Wicked in Mexico

Mexico City’s Teatro Telcel is hosting the first Spanish adaptation of the musical Wicked, with a record-breaking 50,000 tickets sold in its first five weeks. As with eight other Wicked productions worldwide, renowned Broadway sound designer Tony Meola has chosen Meyer Sound as the audio foundation, this time including Mexico’s first Constellation® acoustic system.

“Constellation works amazingly well with amplified musicals in houses like Teatro Telcel,” observes Meola. “Amplified sound in a dead acoustical environment makes it sound like the room doesn’t have any dimension to it. But with Constellation, all of a sudden the sound is given dimension, and everything sounds much more real. I was surprised when I heard the effect, and I imagine it would be very welcome in many of the road houses where Wicked tours will play well into the future.”

To ensure Teatro Telcel would accommodate events ranging from symphonic concerts and operas to hard rock shows and Broadway musicals, the architects specified a dry baseline acoustic signature so it could be augmented as needed through Constellation’s acoustical adaptability. The heart of Constellation is a D-Mitri® digital audio platform with 20 modules and 57 ambient sensing microphones. After the patented VRAS™ acoustical algorithms are applied, sound is distributed to the system of 114 Stella-4 and 18 Stella-8 installation loudspeakers, 48 UP-4XP 48 V loudspeakers, 38 MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers, 13 UPJunior™ loudspeakers, and 24 MM-10XP 48 V subwoofers. The Constellation system was installed by Naucalpan de Juárez-based Teletec.

“The effect of Constellation is remarkable,” says Meola. “In final rehearsals for Wicked, when we had the system off, the associate director commented that ‘It sounds very canned.’ We turned on Constellation, and I never heard that comment again.”

For sound reinforcement, Meola has specified main line arrays of 20 MINA™ and 22 M1D line array loudspeakers each, as well as six UPJ-1P VariO™ loudspeakers and seven UPA-1P, nine UPJunior, nine UPM-1P, 16 UPM-2P, and 52 MM-4 loudspeakers. Four 700-HP and two 600-HP subwoofers provide low end, while system drive and optimization are provided by a Galileo® loudspeaker management system with five Galileo 616 processors.

PRG (Production Resource Group) Mexico provided and installed the sound reinforcement system, in conjunction with the technical crew of OCESA. OCESA, Mexico’s leading theatrical and concert promotion organization, operates Teatro Telcel.

Meola points out that Meyer Sound systems have been a constant in the design of the Wicked franchise, and have made a significant contribution to its storied success. “There’s never been a time when I was unhappy with what I was hearing from the loudspeakers,” he says. “We’ve made major changes in consoles and radio mics in step with technology, but the base Meyer system continues as the foundation of the show’s sound.”

Located in Mexico City’s trendy Polanco district, Teatro Telcel was conceptualized by famed Spanish architect Antón García-Abril and executed by Mexican architect José De Arimatea Moyao.

Wicked currently boasts nine resident and touring productions worldwide, presented in six languages. It has broken numerous box-office records on Broadway, and on national and international tours.

Digital Projection Launches 10,000 Lumen Laser Projector with 20,000+ Hours of Illumination

Digital Projection International (DPI), an Emmy® Award-winning manufacturer of high-performance projection systems, announces the launch of the HIGHLite LASER WUXGA 3D, the world’s first production, high-brightness laser projector. Remarkably bright, the HIGHlite Laser delivers a stunning 10,000 lumens from a stable solid-state light source, capable of producing over 20,000 hours of illumination. Available in the WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution, the HIGHlite Laser WUXGA 3D will begin shipping in June, 2014.

Developed with a ‘Set it and Forget it’ directive, the HIGHlite LASER delivers an impactful imaging solution that installers and system integrators can deploy with minimal maintenance throughout the lifetime of the display. Equally compelling is the lack of lamp replacements due to the solid state illumination system. By bypassing regular lamp replacement cycles, almost all costs related to the HIGHlite Laser are incurred at time of purchase. This key characteristic allows the HIGHlite Laser to have a much lower cost of ownership over the lifespan of the display. Venues looking to produce a compelling visual experience will realize true cost-saving benefits through the HIGHlite Laser’s advanced illumination technology.

Combine the exceptional bright, long-life illumination source with a host of other precision features, and you have a projector solution that’s perfectly suited to a diverse range of professional venues. Image Edge Blending is included as standard, along with advanced geometric warp correction. Additionally, active 3D functionality with frame rates up to 144 Hz is included. Dual HDMI 1.4, DVI and 3G-SDI inputs enable the latest high speed video delivery. HDBaseT connectivity further augments the HIGHlite LASER’s input options, allowing for the transmission of uncompressed High Definition Video over a CAT5e/6 LAN cable. A diverse selection of both fixed and zoom lenses, with throw ratios ranging from 0.77:1 to 6.76:1 and extensive lens shift, ensure that integrators installing the HIGHlite LASER have complete flexibility with respect to projector placement.

DPI will begin demonstrating the new HIGHlite LASER WUXGA 3D at a private event associated with the InfoComm Live staging expo in Atlanta, Georgia, in February, 2014. Visit www.digitalprojection.com/laser for details on this extraordinary new projection solution.

Masque Sound Provides Audio Feast for Interactive Theatrical Dinner Experience, Queen of the Night

Install Part of $20 Million Renovation to New York’s Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel

NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 27, 2014 – Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was called upon by Co-Sound Designers Charles Coes and Darron L West to provide the house sound system for the new immersive, theatrical dinner experience, Queen of the Night, at the newly renovated Diamond Horseshoe at The Paramount Hotel. The limited run officially opened to rave reviews on February 2, 2014.

Queen of the Night is a fusion of performance, music, circus, cuisine, design and nightlife that welcomes the audience into a wholly interactive entertainment experience. From 1938 to 1951, Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe operated in the basement of the Paramount. Known for its vaudeville-style revues, the club featured the day’s top entertainers and even inspired a 1940s movie musical. Seventy-five years after the club first opened, and following a $20 million renovation, Diamond Horseshoe is a prime midtown nightlife destination and venue for environmental theatrical experiences, events and other unique programming overseen by Variety Worldwide, LLC and LDV Hospitality. The 6,000-square-foot ballroom features two bars, a brand new kitchen, banquet style tables and various private rooms.

Queen of the Night is very heavy in terms of audio playback and takes place in numerous rooms. Because of these factors, the sound designers turned to Masque Sound to provide a solution that would allow them to walk into any room with a tablet or computer, and be able to adjust the audio levels, so that they could define the very specific sound that they were looking for.

In consultation with Masque Sound, Coes and West put together a Dante digital sound network that allows them the ability to control anything in the space and send audio to anywhere within the space. “Because we are covering more than 20 individual rooms with more than 48-channels of playback and 36-channels of control beyond that playback, we felt the Dante system was the best option to achieve our goal,” says Coes. “With the Dante network, we can send instructions to any individual speaker in the entire venue through a combination of console, DME and QLab.

Considering Masque Sound’s superb track record, it comes as no surprise that the company was extremely helpful and knowledgeable in addressing the unique requirements of this interactive show. Because we had the support of a shop with such a large resource pool, we were able, as a sound department, to turn things around in one day.”

Dante is a combination of software, hardware and network protocols that deliver uncompressed, multi-channel, low-latency digital audio over a standard Ethernet network. In addition to the Dante network, the main room is made up entirely of NEXO sound system combinations, which is starting to generate a lot of interest within the New York sound reinforcement community. The room features GEO mains with PS10 and PS8 fills, and surround using NXamp 4×1 and RS 18s. The signal flow is entirely digital, from playback to amplifier, all using the Dante standard. This allowed Coes and West to be able to use the network and send audio straight from their computers to the console for the mix, making it very easy to direct signal.

“We have been through a lot of changes in what the soundtracks are and what the acts are,” adds Coes. “It has been a long developmental process but one that really started to gel and come together in the preview process, and Masque Sound was once again, incredibly supportive. Scott Kalata on the business side and the shop staff were extremely helpful in quickly finding solutions to problems as new things came up. The only real restriction on what we could achieve was how quickly we could turn our ideas into reality.”
