PESA Receives 2014 Governor’s Trade Excellence Award

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of professional audio and video connectivity, was selected as a 2014 recipient of the 8th annual Governor’s Trade Excellence Award. The company received its honor from Governor Robert Bentley on March 5 in a ceremony at the State Capitol in Montgomery, Ala.

Presented by the Alabama Department of Commerce and the Export AlabamaTrade Alliance, the Governor’s Trade Excellence Award recognizes companies in Alabama that excel in overseas sales and service. The objectives of the program are to identify the state’s successful and innovative exporters, promote them as role models to encourage increased involvement in the global marketplace, and develop awareness of how exporting impacts Alabama’s economy. PESA is one of only eight companies to receive the award in 2014.

“We are very pleased to be recognized for our international efforts with the Governor’s Trade Excellence Award,” said Chuck Tillett, PESA president and COO. “International sales continue to be an important part of PESA’s business plan, as we roll out new products and services to video professionals in a variety of industries.”

“Alabama products are among the best in the country, and the companies recognized today show how successful Alabama products are reaching the global marketplace,” Bentley said. “In 2013, Alabama exports total $19.3 billion, which represents a 57 percent increase since 2009. Reliable Symetrix Zone Mix 761 Delivers Sound 24/7 at Brooklyn Luxury Low-Rise

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – MARCH 2014: Heatherwood’s newest luxury apartment building is the low-rise at 544 Union in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The newly-constructed six-story building is well appointed and includes a fitness center, a yoga studio, a game room, a resident lounge, a rooftop sundeck, and a large second floor terrace with a putting green, a fire pit, and plenty of places to sit, relax, and catch up with friends. Heatherwood wanted to improve upon the sound systems that had been installed previously in its other properties, and the A/V integration branch of Love Music (New Rochelle, New York) delivered with the rock-solid reliability and performance of a Symetrix Zone Mix 761 fixed architecture audio processor and Symetrix ARC-WEB user control for smartphones.

The electrical contractor on the job, Lippolis Electric, asked Love Music to design and commission the music playback system for 544 Union. “The client wanted something that would work 24-hours a day, seven days a week without fail,” said Mario Bilotta, vice president of Love Music and the person responsible for 544 Union’s sound system design. “They didn’t want to worry about the music playback system at all – they just wanted it to work. I knew the Symetrix Zone Mix 761 would give them that level of reliability and performance. I’ve been using Symetrix gear for many years now without any troubles at all. In addition, the Zone Mix 761 is easy to program and quick to install.”

The Zone Mix 761’s twelve inputs easily accommodate Internet radio, multiple iPod inputs, and multiple television inputs located throughout the building’s common areas. The unit’s six outputs feed as many zones: the fitness center, the lobby, the second floor patio, the rooftop patio, and two rec rooms. Three QSC amplifiers power thirty-six Community loudspeakers, both indoors and out. Users select both audio and video content in the rec rooms using a URC touch panel control. A Symetrix ARC-2e wall-mounted remote control in each of the other zones allows for intuitive source selection and volume control. Building staff can control the system using the custom-designed, password-protected Symetrix ARC-WEB control for smartphones and other internet-connected devices.

IMS Productions Builds New HD Mobile Unit With Beck TV

IMS-HD3 Expands IMS Productions’ Fleet of State-of-the-Art Trucks and Enables Company to Provide Dedicated Unit for Lakers Home Games

AUSTIN, Texas — March 6, 2014 — Beck TV (formerly Beck Associates), one of the United States’ premier design-build systems integrators, today announced that the company has completed a state-of-the-art HD mobile production truck for multimedia production company IMS Productions. Dubbed IMS-HD3, the new 53-foot expando unit is currently serving as a dedicated production unit for Los Angeles Lakers home basketball games at the Staples Center.

“We chose to build HD3 with Beck TV because we heard great things about the company and because the project price fit our budget,” said Paul Nijak, director of engineering for IMS Productions. “The build itself was smoother than I imagined it could be, largely because of the company’s clear commitment to getting the job done right, no matter what it takes. Beck TV’s work was very accurate, and we finished the truck on time and on budget.”

IMS Productions is located in Indianapolis just across the street from the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The company’s HD remote-production truck fleet crisscrosses the nation to provide live production services for national sports and entertainment broadcasts and events. IMS-HD3 is a 12-camera stand-alone truck that requires no B unit.

Among the systems built into the truck are Sony 2400 cameras, a Grass Valley Kayenne K-Frame HD switcher, a Calrec Artemis Beam audio console, and Sony and EVS machines, with Evertz audio and video routing. Nijak supplied the trailer design and worked with the Beck TV team in Texas to bring the project to completion.

“Once the trailer got to Beck TV’s Austin facility, I spent time on site, almost becoming part of the integration team,” added Nijak. “I knew already that the company’s integrators were part of the staff, and during the build I found that this approach allowed Beck TV to apply an uncommonly high level of quality control.”

“Working with Paul and the rest of the IMS team to build IMS-HD3 was a complete pleasure,” said Fred Beck, president & director of engineering at Beck TV. “The folks at IMS are professionals who know exactly what they want, and that always makes an integrator’s job easier. We are currently in the middle of building another truck with IMS — the new IMS-HD5, a very robust double-expando unit — and we anticipate another successful IMS truck rollout in the very near future.”

Cutting through Reverberation: Meyer Sound CAL at 15th Century Swiss Parliament Hall

At the Berner Rathaus (English: Bern Town Hall) in Switzerland, voice intelligibility has been greatly improved with the installation of two steerable Meyer Sound CAL 64 column array loudspeakers. The system is implemented in the Grossratssaal, the acoustically challenging main legislative chamber of the 15th century Gothic structure. Project design was handled by Daniel Zurwerra of Suhr, Switzerland-based Virtually Audio.

“Voice reinforcement in this space is challenging for several reasons,” recounts Zurwerra.  “First, the reverberation time is more than two seconds, and even higher at some frequencies. We have high background noise levels, and because of aesthetics and historic preservation requirements, loudspeaker placement and positioning is highly restricted. It was clear that beam-steering columns would offer the best results.

“The sound quality and visual aesthetics of CAL are just right,” continues Zurwerra.  “When choosing CAL, I considered the accuracy of simulation data, dedicated drivers for LF and HF, a digital audio network interface, relay closures for fault reports, and options for custom colors and mounting. In addition, I knew I could count on strong local support for Meyer Sound products.”

Kehrsatz-based Kilchenmann AG provided system integration under the direction of Michael Schmutz, while Hansjürg Meier of Adligenswil-based Tonspur AG facilitated technical support for the Meyer Sound portion of the project.

After installation was complete, Zurwerra thoroughly measured and evaluated the system. “The intelligibility figures were very good despite the reverberant room, and the government officials in charge immediately noticed that overall clarity was markedly better,” he says. “In addition, the excellent sonic performance of the CALs will allow the system to be used for a wide range of events, including musical performances.”

The new audio system for the Grossratssaal also comprises a Biamp Nexia CS digital signal processor, a Brähler Conference System, Shure wireless microphones, and an AMX control system.

The Water’s Edge Reincarnated After Super Storm Sandy

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Hurricane Sandy couldn’t have struck this regionally known restaurant/bar/catering facility on the Barnegat Bay at a more inopportune time. The Ziegler family had just purchased the Water’s Edge in Berkeley Twp, New Jersey weeks before when Sandy made its mark on the Jersey Shore. Unfortunately, the structure took a huge hit and the new owners had to rebuild from the ground up.

Calling on the services of Boulevard Pro of Ridgefield Park, N.J., Water’s Edge co-owner Dave Ziegler, requested a completely designed audio/video system solution. “We believe in the Yamaha CIS (Commercial Installation Solutions) Series complete system solution approach, and that is how I presented the new system recommendation to our client,” states James Cioffi, co-owner, Boulevard Pro. “Our experience and reputation combined with the Yamaha support network secured our involvement on this project.” Boulevard also recommended and installed POS, CCTV and DTV systems.

The Water’s Edge venue consists of three large indoor catering spaces including the restaurant, and is used for wedding and large events. An 8,000 sq. ft. outdoor space houses the Tiki Bar and Edge Live, which when weather permits, features live music. Patrons arrive all summer long by land and by sea.

“Our major challenge in designing and installing the new system was time itself! says Ziegler. We had to have a functional Tiki Bar for the summer or we risked losing our loyal customers. Our other major challenge was complying with the sound ordinance and containing the sound within the four wind-break glass walls that surrounded the Tiki Bar that literally sit on top of the water. With the help of Boulevard Pro, we were able to design several zones throughout the Tiki Bar to manage the sound levels out of respect for our neighbors. James Cioffi was one of my most patient vendors, able to do all of this with NO structure in place, plotting zones on our ever changing architectural drawings, and continually modifying the design until we had a final set of drawings.”

The indoor space is outfitted with a Yamaha CIS MTX3 audio processor, two DCP1VS keypads, and 48 Yamaha VXC4W ceiling speakers. The system controls eight audio zones and is using all 12 of the MTX3 inputs. “THE MTX3 is super powerful and sounds great,” says Cioffi. The Yamaha keypads are located in the head end interior location of the space and in the outdoor bar/lounge area, controlled completely via iPad/iPhone. The waterfront bar/lounge system consists of a Yamaha LS9-16 digital audio console, Yamaha TX4n amplifier, Yamaha DXR 12×2 monitors, and IF2112M95 speakers. The Yamaha StageMix App on the LS9 runs live entertainment via an iPad. “The entire venue is beautiful and really impressive, and the Yamaha system is working great,” Cioffi exclaims.

“We are proud to say that we are the premier spot on the Barnegat Bay hosting the best entertainment both inside and out, notes Ziegler. Bands and DJ’s couldn’t be happier coming to play at our venue because they no longer have to haul all of their heavy equipment in to play. It’s a win-win situation. When my general manager isn’t around, I like to take this Ferrari of a sound system for a true test drive!”

Masque Sound Has Its Latest Broadway Fling with Romantic Musical, The Bridges Of Madison County

Custom Audio Equipment Package Heats Up the Stage with Passionate Adaptation of Hugely Popular Novel

NEW YORK, MARCH 6, 2014 – Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, provided a custom audio equipment package for the new romantic musical, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The show officially opened on Thursday, February 20.

Based on James Waller’s best-selling novel, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY tells the story of photographer Robert Kincaid and his life-changing, four-day love affair with Iowa farm wife Francesca Johnson. Developed by a Pulitzer®- and Tony® Award-winning creative team, this new musical captures the lyrical expanse of America’s heartland along with the eternal question, “What if…?” Directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher and book by Marsha Norman, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY features a score by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown and stars four-time Tony Award-nominee Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale.

Sound Designer Jon Weston and Masque Sound began their collaboration on THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY when the musical made its world premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival last summer. “I have enjoyed a long relationship with Masque Sound and it’s great to be working with them once again,” says Weston. “They are an excellent sound shop to collaborate with and I can always count on them to provide me with the equipment that I like to use, which in some cases is not that easy to find since I like the characteristics of older gear. I specifically chose an older-era console, speakers and amplifiers for this production.”

Weston’s goal in designing the sound for THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY was to be as sonically transparent as possible. “In order to provide that organic, analog feel for the show, we walked the line of acoustic reinforcement very carefully and discretely, including an all-acoustic orchestra pit,” he adds. “I really wanted the sound to be as real as possible.”

At the heart of the custom audio equipment package Masque Sound provided was the Cadac J-Type analog console, which Weston considers the finest-sounding audio mixing console. Masque Sound’s custom equipment package also included Tannoy 3836 Dual Concentric 15-inch speakers, EAW JF200 and JF60 ultra-compact two-way range speakers, d&b audiotechnik E8 and E12X-Sub loudspeakers, Meyer Sound subwoofers and speaker processors, Yamaha H series power amplifiers alongside d&b audiotechnik power amplifiers, Sennheiser and Shure wireless microphones, XTA Electronics DP428/448 Speaker Management System and a Clear-Com intercom system. In addition, Masque Sound provided frequency coordination for the 24-channels of wireless in-use throughout the show.

“My biggest challenge on this project was finding the equipment I wanted because it’s not stuff that rents all the time and Masque Sound did an incredible job in accommodating my needs,” says Weston. “This was a true collaboration and my team, made up of Head Sound Engineer Jason Strangfeld; Assistant Sound Engineer Sean Luckey; Production Engineer Charlie Grieco; Sound Engineer Michael Eisenberg and Assistant Sound Designer Josh Millican, along with the designers of the other departments, were all on the same page on how we wanted the show to look and feel, and I think we were very successful.”

About Masque Sound
Founded in 1936 by a trio of Broadway stagehands, Masque Sound evolved into one of NYC’s most successful theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design companies specializing in theatrical, house of worship, sporting, corporate, TV broadcast and live concert events. Celebrating more than 75 years in the industry, the company is lead by Geoff Shearing, the firm’s 3rd generation owner, and Vice President and General Manager Stephanie Hansen. The company also operates Florida-based Professional Wireless Systems, a leader in the development and implementation of wireless technology. Credits range from major Broadway shows and tours including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Lion King,” “Jersey Boys,” “Memphis,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Newsies,” “Once” and “Kinky Boots” to yearly Super Bowl broadcasts and installations of varying sizes, including New York’s New Victory Theater and historic St. Bartholomew’s Church. Masque Sound’s 70,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters and main assembly facility is located at 21 East Union Ave., East Rutherford, NJ, 20 minutes from midtown Manhattan.
