WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY’S KOCH ARENA UPS GAME DAY WITH DANLEY HORNS AND SUBS

WICHITA, KANSAS – MARCH 2014: Originally constructed in 1953 and renovated in 2003, the 10,500-seat Charles Koch Arena is home to the Wichita State University Shockers’ basketball and volleyball teams. The men’s basketball team is a ten-time contender in the NCAA finals, and its home games usually sell out the arena. Recently, Daktronics (Brookings, South Dakota) designed and installed a new center-hung video board in Koch Arena, which prompted a simultaneous renovation of its previously disappointing sound reinforcement system. Now, twenty-four Danley Sound Labs Synergy Horn loudspeakers join four Tapped Horn subwoofers to deliver high-volume, high-fidelity audio to Shockers fans.

“Men’s basketball at Wichita State University attracts large, mostly sold-out, crowds,” said John Olsen, a Daktronics regional sales representative for large sport venue audio. “Because the shape of the building is circular and because the roof is curved, the sound level in Koch Arena can be challenging to overcome when the action on the court heats up. The old system lacked the proper design and performance to cover the entire arena with intelligible speech and impactful music, and there was a definite lack of low-end performance. The school had invested a lot of money in past improvements, but they were ineffective for the whole facility. The new system had to be more inclusive of their immediate in-game needs for all the fans.”

In addition to Olsen, who provided the client contact and communication necessary to understand and meet the university’s expectations, the Daktronics team consisted of Aaron Louwagie, project manager, Dan Eckert, system design engineer, and Doug Dodge, field installation engineer. Decker Electric of Wichita, Kansas provided the high- and low-voltage installation and rigging of the clusters, which required extensive welding to existing roof structures. Larry Lucas of Anthony James Partners (Richmond, Virginia) assisted with system design and commissioning.

Owing to its circular architecture (designed to give everyone a better seat), Koch Arena is known locally as “The Roundhouse.” “It’s a symmetrical room with a highly reflective dome,” said Lucas. “The acoustical challenges that come with that are extreme. The new system would have to have exceptional pattern control so that energy would hit the fans and not the ceiling. Danley Sound Labs’ unique horn-loaded designs offer that kind of precise pattern control. Moreover, they’re very cost-effective, especially when you factor in that each Synergy Horn loudspeaker or Tapped Horn subwoofer requires only one processing and amplifier channel.”

The system is comprised of eight clusters that circle the top ring of the new center-hung video board. Each cluster contains a Danley SH-96, a Danley SH-64, and a Danley SM-80. In addition, four Danley TH-118 subwoofers round out the bottom end. “The tight pattern control of those Synergy Horn boxes worked well within each cluster and between each cluster,” continued Lucas. “When we commissioned the system, one box was inadvertently set 6dB hotter than the rest, and it upset the acoustical balancing act that we had designed for the symmetry of the room. Once we brought it back down, the whole system tightened up nicely.”

A Yamaha LS9-16 manages all of the inputs to the system and in turn feeds a QSC Q-Sys processing system. Twenty QSC PL240 and four QSC CX1102 amplifiers power the Danley boxes, whereas two QSC CX302V and two QSC CX108V 70-volt amplifiers power thirty-six JBL Control 25T wall-mounted speakers that cover seats below a balcony lip that is shaded from the video board.

“On the surface, projects like Koch Arena can sometimes seem straightforward, but in reality they are very complex,” explained Olsen. “The SPL and intelligibility required in a facility like this can be very tricky to obtain. The complexity of equipment and the engineering know-how that is needed to properly design, install, test, tune, and fully commission this kind of system takes experience. At Daktronics, we are fortunate to have a team that includes experienced people who can make a project like this look easy. We are pleased with how the Danley speakers perform. They fit well at Koch Arena and the Wichita State University Athletics Department is pleased with the clarity of music and speech that we have achieved. Their fans immediately noticed the upgrades. With a high-performance audio and video system in place, the production team at Wichita now has a broad palette with which to work. Just like viewing a standard-definition video signal on an HD screen reveals hidden flaws, so too, a modern high-definition sound system reveals details in audio content that could not be heard before!”

NPI Audio Visual Solutions Adds First Vista Systems’ Spyder to its Inventory

Cleveland-based systems integrator NPI Audio Visual Solutions has invested in its first Vista Systems Spyder X20 for use in live events and for its demo room where the company showcases equipment for permanent installations. NPI serves customers nationwide with a primary focus in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia.

“Our installation/integration division provides engineered AV systems for broadcast facilities, corporate installations, K-12 and higher education, mobile facilities and portable AV flight packs” says director of sales Sam Avellone. “In addition, we have a staging and rental division, an in-house AV services division for hotels & conference centers, corporate event production, and an HD video truck, trailer and portable AV flight pack systems for live event production, broadcasts & web streaming, with an in-house production studio for content development, editing & duplication.” “So we can pretty much handle anything in the AV realm (sales, rentals & production).”

Recently, NPI was looking for a device to “zone content and edge blend,” Avellone explains. “After a little research we discovered that Spyder was the product that delivers those capabilities.”

He notes that NPI has developed a control system for scoreboards, which Spyder has augmented. “A lot of the scoreboard companies only have one video input on their control system which limits what they can display on the scoreboard. But now that we have Spyder we can plug in a head end system that allows them to also show branded/sponsored videos, advertisements and instant replays which can be placed ( in any configuration ) on the video display. The customer gets a next-level scoreboard and a system that not only enhances the “in-game” experience, but can also generate revenue for them”.

Avellone reports that the Spyder has been “working great and everybody is happy with it. Vista trainers came here to provide training for our technicians, and they’ve been great in terms of sales support, too. We did a tradeshow with Vista for the annual Ohio Association of Broadcasters Engineers conference. Vista was very helpful in assisting us to show off the product and even came and worked the booth. Spyder looked great and got a lot of attention on the show floor.”

About Vista Systems
Vista Systems’ switchers have become the industry standard for live multiple-destination video and data mixed signal switching with real-time windowing and composition. For more information on Vista Systems, visit their website at www.vistasystems.net.

DPA Microphones Allow Jure Tori To Move Freely On Stage

Slovenian accordionist Jure Tori is using DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to bring extra energy and quality to the sound he is achieving on stage. The internationally acclaimed musician recently bought two d:vote microphones from DPA’s Slovenian distributor, Sonus, and is now using them for all of his live performances.

“When you’re playing an accordion, the whole body is involved,” Tori says. “Therefore I need microphones that enable me to move and express myself without limitations. With a DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone attached to my accordion, I am able to pick up the sound of the entire keyboard and really capture the sensitivity of my music.”

A unique and charismatic musician, Jure Tori has performed on stages all over the world, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians such as Austrian double bass player Ewald Oberleitner and guitarist Ariel Cubria. He also plays as part of the group Orlek and recently established the Tori Trio with Oberleitner and percussionist Ganesh Anandan. His reputation as an accordionist is now so well established that his songs are part of the curriculum programme for students of accordion and his compositions have been published by the Slovenian Music Information Center. His music has also been used to accompany animations by Dušan Kastelic (Bugbrain Institute), in movies by Metod Pevec and in various Slovenian and Austrian documentaries.

“My compositions express my personality, traumas and pleasures – sometimes in a funny way and sometimes in a sad way” he explains. “DPA microphones have brought real progress to my music, especially the work I am doing with the Tori Trio. With DPA, I have achieved more live musical energy, improved the quality of the sound and found it much easier to play my instrument.”

DPA’s d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones are renowned for their audio quality and their versatility. Despite their tiny, discreet size and lightweight design, these clip mics are rugged, stable and perfectly suited to the rigors of touring and live performance. Intended for fast-paced settings, the mics can easily be unclipped and repositioned or moved to another instrument with only one hand. Additionally, the d:vote’s microphone mounting system is designed to be extremely gentle, never marring the finish of an instrument.

“On an accordion, the constant sound of the bass is very important and these microphones enable that sound to be properly picked up,” Tori adds. “They also make it much easier to record live concerts. I have managed to find a good solution for fixing and positioning the microphones on both sides of the instrument and as a result I am really enjoying the sound these microphones are delivering.”

Yamato Drummers Use DPA Microphones On European Tour

Netherlands-based Sound Adventure has purchased a DPA d:vote™ 4099 Rock Touring Kit featuring 10 d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones and accessories. The kit was immediately put to use by the Japanese drumming troupe, Yamato, for which Sound Adventure has been providing live audio services during its recent European tour.

“We have been using DPA mics on stage for a few years now,” explains Erik Bouwmeester, Sound Adventure’s owner and Yamato’s FOH engineer. “We use the d:fine 4066 Headset Microphones for vocals or flutes and the d:screet™ 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones for string instruments such as the guitar-like Japanese Samisen.”

Yamato have become something of a cultural phenomenon in recent years. Founded in Japan’s Nara Prefecture in 1993, they have given more than 2,500 performances in 51 different countries and regions of their spectacularly choreographed taiko drumming. The troupe tours for between six to ten months a year, creating and presenting original compositions on an impressively global scale.

This level of touring means that all equipment has to be very hard wearing to survive the demands of life on the road. Added to this, Yamato’s artistic director Masa Ogawa insists that the audience must not see any microphone during the show. Happily, the new d:vote 4099 clip mics used by Sound Adventure are discreet enough to ensure that remains the case.

Bouwmeester was introduced to the d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones on Yamato’s previous European tour by DPA’s Belgian distributor Amptec Belgium.

“They are a perfect match with our beltpacks and can easily handle the SPL of the drums, which is sometimes more than 132dB,” he says. “Also the variation of good clips and clamps is very useful. For example we use four guitar clamps with an elastic extension on the medium drums called the Myadaiko. We also use a single d:vote 4099 on the biggest drum Yamato plays, the Odaiko which weighs almost 500kg, but it has no problems in picking up that sound as well.”

In total Bouwmeester uses 32 wireless channels, 14 of which are miked with DPA mics. These are fed through a d&b audiotechnik PA system via a Digidesign venue profile/mixrack Front of House console.

Having successfully used the DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones in Europe, Bouwmeester says the Yamato troupe is now considering buying another DPA Rock Kit package for their own shows in Japan. They are currently back in their home country for various performances but will be returning to Europe in June for shows in Germany and Eastern Europe.

“Obviously I will be using my DPA Rock Touring kit for those shows as well,” Bouwmeester says.
