HARMAN and Intellitech Systems Take Part In A Detroit Revival at Bistro 82

Left to right: Chadi Shaya (Owner of Intellitech Systems), Andy Combs (Owner of IAV Sales, HARMAN Rep.), Aaron Belen (Owner of Bistro 82 & Sabrage), James Ure (Business Development Manager Eastern Region, HARMAN Professional).

ROYAL OAK, Michigan – Detroit has always been a city of resiliency, and that was resoundingly evident at the Valentine’s Day opening of Bistro 82 in the city’s Royal Oak suburb. Completely remodeled and renovated, the 2-story establishment offers superlative French cuisine in its restaurant while its Sabrage ultra lounge is a chic addition to the area’s nightclub scene. Bistro’s clean, contemporary design is accented by an open, spacious layout with splashes of color and plenty of natural lighting, with an audio system featuring HARMAN’s JBL, Crown and BSS Audio components to complement the world-class food and surroundings.

“This was a complete ground-up remodeling project, which gave us the freedom to perfectly tailor the audio installation to the first floor Bistro 82 restaurant and second floor nightclub,” said Chadi Shaya, owner of Detroit systems integrator Intellitech Systems. Bistro 82’s main and VIP areas are served by 14 JBL Control 65P/T full-range pendant speakers, mounted 10 feet above the floor using a suspension cable system. Additional first-floor speakers include six JBL ASB6112 single-12-inch subwoofers and five JBL AC16 2-way dual-8-inch speakers that are horizontally wall mounted. The speakers are powered by four Crown CDi 4000 amplifiers and networked using a BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 signal processor with digital audio bus and a BLU-8v2 programmable zone controller, which can independently route different audio and video sources to different areas in the restaurant.

The Sabrage lounge system is designed to deliver high-SPL audio – over 40,000 watts worth of peak power. Energy on the main dance floor area is fueled by six JBL AM7212/26 high-power 2-way loudspeakers, chosen for their clear, full-range, high-impact sound and compact design. The AM7212/26 loudspeakers are grouped to provide concentrated sound to the dance floor while not overpowering the rest of the nightclub. In addition, there are two ASB6125 and two ASB6115 single-15-inch subwoofers and seven JBL AC28 dual-8-inch loudspeakers, the latter mounted horizontally on the ceiling and aimed downward towards the dance floor. The loudspeakers are driven by Crown Macro Tech 12000i and 9000i amplifiers, networked together with a separate BSS BLU-100 processor.

All amplifiers, processors and A/V equipment are housed in a central ventilated equipment rack located on the first floor. In addition to its audio capabilities, the Bistro 82/Sabrage system features video and smart automation control that enables operation of the system via an iPad, iPhone or computer as well as the BSS wall controllers.

The team at Intellitech Systems invested over 200 hours of design and engineering into this project, using AutoCAD to lay out all the loudspeakers and subwoofers and EASE (Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers) acoustic modeling software to ensure optimum audio quality. Due to building architecture, there were some challenges – “On both floors, one entire wall consists of all windows,” noted Shaya, “and in the second floor night club we had to deal with a low ceiling.” To minimize the effects of the windows’ hard reflective surfaces, Intellitech sprayed surfaces on both floors with soundproofing material that not only helped reduce the amount of reverberation but also helped to separate both floors from each other acoustically. The EASE simulator enabled Shaya to choose the loudspeakers that would be best suited for each section of the interior spaces, and place and aim the loudspeakers for best sound coverage while minimizing unwanted reflections from the windows.

“I have to point out that the level of support we received from HARMAN Professional and the quality of their products helped make this project successful,” Shaya emphasized. “The all-HARMAN system architecture ensured total compatibility all around, and the BSS Audio Soundweb London processors allowed us to easily integrate iPad and iPhone control, which adds to the ease and convenience of operating the system.”

“We feel this is a breakthrough for the city of Detroit,” Shaya concluded. “It will definitely set a new trend for future bistros, bars and nightclubs.”

Wohler’s Kirk Marple to Present on Intelligent File-Based Processing at 2014 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference

SAN FRANCISCO — March 20, 2014 — Wohler Technologies today announced that Kirk Marple, chief software architect for the company’s RadiantGrid line, will present “Intelligent File-Based Processing: Cost-Effective, Efficient Tools for Broadcasters” at the 2014 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference (BEC). Marple’s presentation, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in room S228 of the Las Vegas Convention Center, will examine how automated file-based processing technology can reduce the cost and complexity of maintaining quality assurance and compliance.

“While content quality has become a key competitive differentiator across media platforms, budgets for monitoring and maintaining quality are falling and the complexity of delivering content is increasing,” said Marple. “Without some means of assuring that content meets both quality standards and regulatory specifications, broadcasters risk losing customers, compromising their reputations, and incurring fines for noncompliance.”

Marple will discuss how the addition of intelligence to automated file-based media transformation is enabling broadcasters to assure simply, quickly, and affordably that the content they ingest, transcode, edit, and otherwise transform for distribution retains its quality and integrity, or even improves through the application of appropriate audio and image processing. Attendees will learn how, through metadata extraction and indexing, cutting-edge media transformation platforms are using this intelligence to enable streamlined media pipelines by which broadcasters can maximize the quality of their assets and outputs cost-effectively.

New NTP Audio Synchronization Feature for Digigram’s IQOYA IP Audio Codecs Improves Continuity of Radio Broadcasts

Available as an Option With the Latest Firmware Update, New Capability Enables Radio Broadcasters to Manage Delay Across Transmitter Sites for Seamless Listening Experience

MONTBONNOT, France — March 20, 2014 — Digigram today announced the release of a new Network Time Protocol (NTP) feature for the company’s IQOYA *LINK, IQOYA *LINK/LE, and IQOYA *SERV/LINK IP audio codecs. Facilitating audio synchronization via an NTP server, this feature allows radio broadcasters to assure a seamless audio experience for on-the-go listeners receiving signals from a series of different transmitters in a multiple-frequency FM network and to resolve the audio delay caused when adjacent transmitters receive signals from different sources, such as satellite and terrestrial IP links.

“Enhanced with the ability to synchronize audio based on NTP servers, the IQOYA line offers an elegant solution for a critical issue that can adversely affect the listening experience,” said Stéphane Bert, IP audio distribution product manager at Digigram. “Without relying on additional hardware, these IP audio codecs reduce the audio delay between two contiguous transmitters to as little as 20 milliseconds on a WAN and fewer than five milliseconds on a LAN. Guaranteeing constant delay, the systems allow broadcasters to compensate for delay and eliminate awkward gaps in audio.”

Installed across transmitter sites, Digigram IQOYA IP audio codecs ensure that when a radio program is transmitted using several FM transmitters in a multiple-frequency network (MFN), in which all transmitters use different frequencies, the audio delay between two contiguous transmitters remains small and constant. This prevents undesired audio effects for a person in a car listening to an FM receiver that switches from one transmitter to another.

When a transmitter site receives an audio program through a terrestrial IP network and a contiguous transmitter site receives the same audio program through satellite, the IQOYA products can significantly reduce the audio delay — sometimes as long as one second — between these two transmitters.

Each IQOYA unit can be upgraded via a simple firmware update to activate the optional NTP feature, which slaves the codec’s sample frequency to the clock reference given by the NTP server. The Digigram encoder can then make the associated decoder play out the audio at the same presentation time. Playback on the decoder can be delayed up to two seconds for unframed audio formats (PCM, Eapt-X) and six seconds for framed audio formats (MPEG layer 2 and 3, AAC). The smart synchronization on the incoming IP audio stream ensures a constant delay between the decoder and the encoder.

NETIA Sponsors Archives du Monde’s Work to Digitize and Preserve Audio Collection of Togo’s Radio Kara

CLARET, France — March 20, 2014 — NETIA today announced that it is sponsoring work by Archives du Monde to digitize the archives of Togo’s Radio Kara and to train the broadcaster’s technicians in managing and maintaining this archive independently. Archives du Monde is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping radio broadcasters worldwide digitize and preserve their audio archives, and NETIA’s support and the company’s Radio-Assist(TM) digital audio automation software play a key role in this work.

Founded in 1976, Radio Kara is the second public radio broadcaster operating in the northern part of Togo. The facility has thousands of hours of audio stored on magnetic tape, and the gradual deterioration of this archive, mainly due to climatic conditions, requires urgent intervention. These archives represent a unique historical and cultural heritage, including programs on Togolese culture (music, stories, poems), politics, economy, and society.

“Radio Kara’s tape archive is a national treasure that excites the imagination with glimpses into the country’s rich past,” said Elisabeth Clémentin, project manager at Archives du Monde. “A significant part of Togo’s audio heritage is stored in this collection, and the creation of a digital archive will benefit all who appreciate African history and culture.”

The goal of Archives du Monde is to protect radio archives by facilitating implementation of a lasting and reliable digital audio archive solution that not only helps to preserve the region’s cultural assets, but also provides a valuable tool in everyday broadcast operations going forward. In addition to planning and executing the Radio-Assist installation, Archives du Monde will provide Radio Kara’s technical staff with the training needed to become self-sufficient. Ultimately, this project will enable Radio Kara to build a growing archive and make it available to the public via a digital catalog, populated with audio clips that highlight Togo’s history and cultural heritage.

“NETIA has been involved in the digitization of archives for broadcasters all around the globe, and we are intensely aware of the large volume of valuable audio assets urgently in need of digitization,” said Isabelle Sost Michoux, communication and field marketing director at NETIA. “We’re proud to be supporting Archives du Monde and the organization’s work to preserve unique audio content that brings Africa’s culture and history to life.”

NETIA and Archives du Monde are long-time partners. In the past, with NETIA’s support, the charity digitized the tape-based audio library of Radio Lome in Togo. The project was a success, with more than 2,500 hours of audio content digitized.

More information about NETIA and its product portfolio is available at www.netia.com.

Professional Wireless Systems RF Management Keeps the Show Going for 26th Annual Premio Lo Nuestro Gala

Television’s Longest-Running Latin Music Awards Captures 9.5 Million Viewers

MIAMI, MARCH 20, 2014 — Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, helped set the stage for the 26th annual star-studded Premio Lo Nuestro Latin Music Awards at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, coordinating the show’s wireless needs for all aspects of this year’s event, including the main show as well as the red carpet and post-awards segments.

Presented by television network Univision, Premio Lo Nuestro honors the year’s best Latin music. First airing in 1989, the awards show features appearances and dynamic performances by famous Latino actors, musicians and show business personalities, including Marc Anthony, Romeo Santos and Daddy Yankee, among others. The show is broadcast throughout the Americas and this year was watched by 9.5 million viewers in the United States.

PWS has been working with Univision for 16 years to provide frequency coordination for its three annual awards shows, Premio Lo Nuestro, Premio Juventud and the Latin GRAMMY® Awards. For this year’s Premio Lo Nuestro show, PWS worked side-by-side with Acoutech, the show’s PA provider, to ensure that 162 frequencies remained solid and interference-free throughout the evening’s performances.

“We have enjoyed a long relationship with Univision and the Premio Lo Nuestro show, and were excited to once again provide frequency coordination services for this year’s spectacular,” says Jim Van Winkle, General Manager, PWS. “Miami is always a challenging market since it is a highly congested RF area, but our expert team once again did an amazing job in ensuring the show went off without any issues.”

PWS utilized the Shure Axient™ systems’ wideband receivers, power management and remote control capabilities in addition to COMTEK BST-25’s for the host IFBs. Telex BTR-800s, provided by PWS and Univision, were used for the show’s wireless intercoms. PWS also deployed a combination of its Domed and Helical Antennas, all running through its GX-8 Combiners for transmission, in addition to its DB-IC Multicouplers for the receive end. Tying everything together, PWS managed the show’s frequencies with its own Intermodulation Analysis System (IAS). IAS is a complete frequency management tool that helps coordinators quickly chose the clear frequencies for each specific wireless system and tuning range.

Another challenge that the PWS crew faced while working at the show was managing to track down interfering ENG crews that were shooting in the building and not coordinated with the show’s wireless frequencies. PWS provided exceptional service in its RF coordination, immediately locating all interfering sources and correcting any potential issues that may have arisen during the show’s broadcast.

To personalize monitor disposition, the RL2460HT lets gamers easily adjust display height using an integrated precision scale system, which rapidly sets up the monitor to predefined settings. Both devices come with Display Pilot software, which offers users direct access to game-specific display settings for a truly optimized gaming experience. To further accommodate individual viewing preferences, Display Mode allows gamers to switch between nine monitor screen sizes from 17-inch (4:3) to 24-inch widescreen, while Smart Scaling enables players to adjust the screen’s content on-the-fly to virtually any custom size without impacting controller sensitivity.

STARPOWER ADDS SVS AS NEWEST HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO BRAND

SVS’ award-winning subwoofers are now available at Starpower’s retail and online stores.

Girard, OH – Mach 20, 2014SVS, a worldwide leader in high performance home audio products, proudly announces a new partnership with Starpower to become the newest high-performance audio brand available from the highly regarded Texas-based retailer.

“Starpower’s outstanding customer-focused approach to both the retail and custom installation experience makes them one of the premier technology retailers in the US,” said Gary Yacoubian, SVS president. “They have a future-facing business model, an innovative approach and a knowledgeable and experienced team. We are proud to be among the premium AV brands they represent.”

SVS is driving a “rising tide” in the AV market as more consumers seek impactful audio experiences to complement large-screen TVs. The launch of their PB-2000 and SB-2000 subwoofers at 2014 International CES have helped SVS set all-time monthly sales records in January and February, dating back to the company’s founding in 1998. $699 and $799 have historically been the best-selling price points for SVS subwoofers, and early indications bear that out for the 2000 Series.

Since its founding in 1995, Starpower has frequently been honored for its work with both customers and the industry, earning many prestigious accolades for its AV installation services and sales/support acumen. In addition to local business and media awards, Starpower has been honored as “Dealer of the Year” by several top AV brands and also earned the highly coveted CEDIA Installer of the Year.

“The passion SVS has brought to the subwoofer category is reminiscent of the glory days of audio, when there was nothing cooler than a killer audio system, and people got truly excited about getting the best performance possible,” said Daniel Pidgeon, chairman of Starpower. “This palpable energy, combined with a subwoofer line that accommodates wide-ranging budgets, listening preferences and room dimensions; has me genuinely excited about what the future holds for our partnership.”

SVS products are sold internationally, both direct and at retail, depending on regional preferences. The company’s hybrid go-to market approach and unilateral resale policy have proven to be a profitable model that helps raise the average selling price of audio products for dealers with real margins backed by expert service, when it’s needed.

“We want to engage customers on whatever level they prefer since a focused distribution strategy is core to our mission,” said Jack Travis, SVS director of global sales. “Great partnerships are in the DNA of both SVS and Starpower. We are thrilled that Starpower customers can now demo SVS products in a retail setting while benefitting from the highly skilled installation and technical support services they provide.”

Founded in 1995, Starpower was created to provide clients with the finest experience in high-end, custom installations of audio, video, security and electronic automation. The company recruits, hires and trains each member of its installation team to meet the highest industry standards and sells only the finest brands of equipment.

“Our job is to create a one-of-a-kind entertainment experience. SVS brings a unique energy, passion and product line that will help us deliver on this promise to customers,” said David Pidgeon, CEO of Starpower.
