Sennheiser & Shanghai Concert Hall Collaborate Long-Term Naming Ceremony of Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall

Shanghai, PRC, March 25, 2014: Sennheiser Group and the Shanghai Concert Hall have agreed to terms that officially renames the Shanghai Concert Hall, “Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall”, effective March 10, 2014. This is the first time in Sennheiser’s history that a performance centre has been named after the company and signals a new beginning for Sennheiser Group. This prestigious event also introduces the formation of Sennheiser-owned record label, Sennheiser Media. Sennheiser Media is a subsidiary of Sennheiser. Famed Chinese musical prodigy, A-Bu is the label’s first signing and Sennheiser is pleased to launch A Bu’s first album at this event.

Sennheiser and the prestigious Shanghai Concert Hall have had a longstanding relationship in China. Through the renaming of the Shanghai Concert Hall, both Sennheiser and officials from the Shanghai Concert Hall will sign a contract that renames this historical concert hall that includes the opening of an official Sennheiser music store within the venue to sell different variety of headphones. The Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall was the first professional concert hall in China and aims to become a new platform to promote the development of arts in music in Shanghai and for the rest of China.

In this cooperation, Sennheiser will install a full set of top theatre and sound equipment, as well as design a state of the art centralized audio recording control system. Sennheiser will provide some of their most popular & sophisticated products such as 9000 series microphones. The world-renowned 9000 series wireless microphone is another favorite microphone among international artists and it was no surprise when it won “Outstanding Technical Achievement for Wireless Technology” at the 29th TEC. Italian loudspeaker company K-array will also be used as part of the installation.

Sennheiser Recording Facility:

Parts of the plans include a commitment to set up a professional, world-class recording studio inside the Shanghai Concert Hall, scheduled for completion in 2015. This part of the concert hall will ensure future live performances in HIFI levels can be recorded. Once the facility is ready, the Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall will introduce a new project called “Young Talent Inspires“ to help young up and coming artists to record an album and promote it through Sennheiser’s global sales network.

The Shanghai Concert Hall is one of China’s heritage architecture buildings. Originally named the Nanjing Theater, it was designed by a Chinese architect and completed in March 1930.The Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Juilliard Quartet, violinist Isaac Stern, pianist Alicia de Larrocha and Chinese symphony orchestras all once performed there. “The Spring of Shanghai” festival also began at the concert hall. Nexidia’s Drew Lanham to Present at 2014 PBS Technology Conference and NAB Show Broadcast Engineering Conference

ATLANTA — March 25, 2014 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced that Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s Media and Entertainment division, will give a presentation at the 2014 PBS Technology Conference and two presentations at the 2014 NAB Show’s Broadcast Engineering Conference in Las Vegas in early April.

The PBS Technology Conference session, titled “Search in the Absence of Sufficient Metadata and Automated Closed Captioning, Descriptive Video, and Language Verification,” will take place on Thursday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the Caesars Palace Conference Center in the Emperors II ballroom. Steve Wynn, director of engineering and maintenance at the PBS Media Operations Center (MOC) will be the co-presenter. Lanham and Wynn will discuss Nexidia’s patented phonetic search technology including how PBS has used it to enhance searchability of its digital archive, and how it has helped PBS’s efforts to repurpose existing media assets. The presenters will also detail how PBS is using Nexidia QC(TM) automated techniques to verify captions, video description, and language within the MOC’s workflows.

At the 2014 NAB Show Broadcast Engineering Conference on Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m., Lanham will present a paper titled “Automated QC Technology Verifies Captions and Languages” as part of the Video Description and Captioning section. In the 30-minute session, to be held in room S227 of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Lanham will describe the technology behind automated quality control and explain how media operations can incorporate the technology into their own workflows to ensure content is being distributed in the right languages with the correct captions at the right times.

On Thursday, April 10, at 9 a.m., Lanham will address NAB Show Broadcast Engineering Conference attendees again with a 30-minute session on “Phonetic-Based Search of Dialogue: The Key to Unlocking an Archive’s Potential.” As part of the conference’s Media Asset Management section, Lanham will explain Nexidia’s phonetic-based dialog search technology and how it can change the way all kinds of organizations discover and use media assets. The session will convene in room S228 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

New Broadcast Pix Software Upgrades Include Next Generation Chromakey, Dual-Channel Clip Server

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ will debut ClearKey, its next generation chromakey, as well as a dual-channel clip server and several other upgrades in its Version 4.0 software for Granite™ and Mica™ integrated production switchers. Available in May, the new software features will be demonstrated at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth SL6325), which runs April 7-10 in Las Vegas, Nev. The company also announced Version 3.0 software for its Flint™ end-to-end integrated production switchers, with most of the same upgrades.

Part of Broadcast Pix’s Fluent™ workflow software, ClearKey features precise, highly adjustable keying that can handle challenging visuals, such as glass or fast-moving or out of focus objects. Robust color correction removes the most stubborn spill from chromakeyed objects, which is important for virtual set use where color contamination is almost unavoidable. A key crop function can be used to confine the keying effect to certain areas of the screen.

ClearKey also creates more realistic shadow and lighting effects. Shine a spotlight on the background, for example, and it will shine on the virtual set as well. If a subject casts a shadow on the green or blue background, ClearKey can make the shadow appear on the virtual set, if desired. A simple eye dropper tool simplifies chromakey color selection, and intuitive controls make it easy to adjust lighting, shadow and spill correction effects.

The V4 upgrade includes a dual-channel clip server for Granite and Mica, which handles playback of SD and HD footage in a variety of file formats. (Flint already includes a dual-channel clip server.) Both upgrades add new device controls for Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio and Studio Pro video recorders, as well as all AJA Ki Pro recorders, over a TCP/IP connection. Clips can be recorded and played back from the PixPad, and all controls can programmed into a macro for simplified control. The new upgrades also include device control for Lumens VC-G50 and VC-G30 HD PTZ cameras. Plus, Fluent-View, Broadcast Pix’s customizable multi-view, includes a new snap-to-grid feature to make it easier to build new screen layouts.

“When Broadcast Pix has a major software release, you know we’ve listened to our customers and added some pretty significant improvements,” said Steve Ellis, general manager, Broadcast Pix. “ClearKey in particular represents a major step forward that will improve productions for customers who rely on virtual sets. Joseph Electronics’ Exclusive Camera Caddie-FP Simplifies HD Acquisition Over Fiber

NILES, Ill. — March 25, 2014 — Joseph Electronics (JE), the premier one-stop shop for the broadcast industry and provider of fiber termination and custom fiber solutions through Joseph Fiber Solutions (JFS), today announced the availability of the new Camera Caddie-FP Series of fiber acquisition tools optimized for use in flypacks and other portable broadcast systems.

Designed to reduce setup and teardown time while providing all of the fiber signal transport components necessary to streamline live video acquisition workflows, the Caddie-FP Series maximizes the amount of time camera operators can spend getting their shots. White Mark Completes Its First Dolby® Atmos™ Theatre In The UK

Acoustic consultancy White Mark Ltd has designed and installed a Dolby® Atmos™ screening theatre for technology solutions and servicing company the EIKON Group.

The 12-seater theatre, which now forms the centrepiece of EIKON’s 3,000 square foot London post production facility, is the first of its kind that White Mark has built in the UK.

David Bell, White Mark’s Managing Director, says: “The Dolby® Atmos™ Premier film mixing theatre that we built for Cinelab in Moscow was our first experience of designing a facility for this new format. Since then we have seen a significant increase in interest, not only from companies like EIKON that deliver services to the cinema industry, but also from companies that deal with cinema advertising.”

Bell adds that, in terms of cinema sound, Dolby® Atmos™ is the most exciting development to have come along in years.

“The fact that it is a cinema-only format and can’t be replicated in the home makes it very important for the film industry – one that could give it a whole new lease of life,” he says. “You only have to look at the recent Oscar success of Gravity to see how well 3D Atmos sound can complement 3D pictures, and how much cinema audiences appreciate this enhanced experience. EIKON’s screening facility may be the first Atmos theatre we have built in the UK but it certainly won’t be the last as we are already working on designs for six more.”

Located in London’s Poland Street, EIKON specialises in creating foreign versions of feature films for major studios and independent distributors. The company also handles VFX for foreign localisation, soundtrack replacement, censor editing, subtitling and Digital Cinema Package mastering.

Equipped with an Alcons Audio professional sound system, EIKON’s new theatre was completed at the beginning of this year and is already being used as a client screening room and quality control facility for grading and mastering.

Laurence Claydon, EIKON’s Director of Technology, says: “Our screening theatre supports the latest cinema picture and sound formats and was built with optimum viewing quality in mind. As the first ground-up, purpose-built Atmos facility in the UK, we were able to adhere perfectly to the specification set down by Dolby and create the best possible listening and viewing environment for our customers.”

Claydon, who also runs the internationally acclaimed technology consultancy Cinefilm, has worked with White Mark on a number of projects in the past. These include the design and build of two preview theatres at NBC Universal’s international headquarters in London.
“White Mark consistently achieves excellent acoustic isolation on all their builds and I have never been disappointed with any of their facilities,” he says. “Internally, their studios always have incredibly tight bass, and just the right balance of absorption and diffusion for a perfect listening environment. You really can hear every detail.”

Claydon adds that client reaction to EIKON’s screening theatre has been very positive.

“We recently completed mastering work on foreign versions of Robocop, and our client, Sony Pictures, was incredibly happy with the result,” he says. “There is definitely something special about our White Mark room. Another customer commented that, having seen and heard a recent feature film over 50 times in various venues, he’d not heard or seen it better than in here.”

In today’s security world, it needs to be at least 10-Gig rated, cable compatible, and field-terminate capable. “Our 10-Gig Cat6A shielded connector not only meets, but exceeds these requirements,” Phillips added. “Used along with the Tele-TitanXg Crimp Tool, our cable stripper and external shielded crimper you achieve an optimal termination every time.”

Meyer Sound Cinema Line Expands with HMS-15, Its Most Powerful Surround Loudspeaker to Date

Meyer Sound has announced the new self-powered HMS-15 surround loudspeaker, which will debut during CinemaCon 2014 in Las Vegas, March 25-27. Easily the most powerful in the company’s expanding line of surround loudspeakers, the HMS-15 delivers both the intensity and subtle nuances of soundtracks to every listener, without compromise.

“The HMS-15 was specifically designed for the extreme demands of today’s dynamic, multi-channel immersive sound formats,” explains Steve Shurtz, technology director for Meyer Sound’s cinema products. “Mixers can now move music and other sound elements off the screen, while still keeping the sound ethereally in front of the audience with undiminished clarity and impact. This opens up the screen for more distinct dialog and sound effects.”

The HMS-15 is designed for high-power, longer-throw applications in cinema exhibition auditoriums as well as in post-production and screening rooms. While it offers exemplary performance in 5.1 and 7.1 formats, the HMS-15 is ideally suited for the extreme demands of immersive formats such as Dolby® Atmos™ and Barco Auro. Pre-release HMS-15 units have been in use to great acclaim at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Sound in Marin County, Calif.

Inside the cabinet, the HMS-15 houses a 15-inch long-excursion LF driver; a three-inch diaphragm HF compression driver coupled to a consistent 80° H x 50° V horn; and two-channel amplification with active crossover, driver protection, and correction for phase and frequency response. With a resultant frequency range of 50 Hz to 18 kHz and a maximum peak SPL of 133 dB (@ 1 m) with very low distortion, the HMS‑15 far exceeds the performance level of conventional, passive cinema surround loudspeakers.

The versatile HMS‑15 can be mounted on walls or ceilings at fixed or adjustable angles with the optional wall-mount brackets or U-bracket, adapting easily to the physical requirements of any surround or immersive sound format.

Although designed primarily for cinema applications, the extraordinary power and clarity of the HMS-15 also make it an effective surround loudspeaker for theatrical productions and themed spectaculars.

The HMS‑15 is available in two models. The 48 V DC version, HMS‑15, is powered by the MPS-488HP external power supply, which eliminates the need for wiring conduits while preserving the advantages of self-powered, bi-amplified loudspeaker systems. The HMS-15AC model is ideal for installations where AC power is readily available.

The HMS-15 joins a full line of Meyer Sound cinema surround loudspeakers that also comprises, in descending size, the HMS-12, HMS-10, and HMS-5.

The HMS-15AC begins shipping in July 2014, and the 48 V DC-powered HMS-15 in October 2014.
