TNDV Captures Creative Energy of Amnesty International Show at Barclays Center

Mobile production specialist’s use of film-style cameras for musical performances enhances dramatic feel of charitable event

NASHVILLE, March 26, 2014TNDV has had a busy mobile production schedule through the first quarter of 2014, with Amnesty International’s Bring Human Rights Home Concert last month standing out as its most unique project. The event, which took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, featured a roster of interesting musical acts aligned with the organization’s mission of fighting injustice and promoting human rights.

TNDV brought its 40-foot expanding side truck, Aspiration, to capture live performances for in-venue image magnification; and to serve as the central command center for content acquisition. The uniquely dramatic elements of the event – which included a rousing speech and performance of two recently-imprisoned members of the Russian musical act Pussy Riot — influenced TNDV to make some changes to its mobile production workflow. This included the use of Canon EOS C300 cinema cameras, which introduced new production possibilities while challenging the crew.

“It was going back to Truck 101,” said Nic Dugger, president and owner, TNDV. “We basically reverse-engineered the truck to work with a camera designed for the film industry, making adjustments across the infrastructure to ensure that the cameras worked with every component. We also lost of a lot of the creature comforts we are used to with the cameras themselves. However, we gained a look and feel that is not easily achievable with broadcast cameras, thanks to a shallow depth of field and some incredibly high resolution images.”

Dugger and his team engineered nine HD video outputs to support the cameras, with feeds frame synched and time-code locked content for delivery across Aspiration’s switching, routing and multiviewing infrastructure. In addition to magnifying performances from The Flaming Lips, Tegan and Sara, and other performers on large venue screens, live feeds were recorded to in-camera memory cards and Aja KiPro recorders on the truck for future use by the organization. The KiPros recorded the feeds using a progressive segmented frame rate, allowing TNDV to capture the content in the 24p-style preferred by the film director.

But there were a number of more unusual compensations for which the TNDV team needed to engineer solutions.

“The most important element we offered this show was a way to monitor cameras and fully understand what was happening,” said Dugger. “Being cinema cameras, the C300s don’t have tally lights, which means there is no obvious way to know what camera is on the air. They also don’t have return video, which means we can’t press a button and watch the line cut in the viewfinder. It made for even higher reliance on our Imagine Communications multiviewer system, while actively listening to the director to understand his next move.”

TNDV achieved that last point by taking advantage of the Barclays Center’s extensive fiber infrastructure. Dugger used Aja Fido bricks to convert HD-SDI signals to fiber and transport signals from every corner of the venue to the loading dock, where Aspiration was parked. That same infrastructure carried multiple RTS intercom feeds, enabling digital point-to-point communications with anyone connected to the matrix.

“That is where the world of film and TV really came together for this project,” said Dugger. “The film director and his camera crew were able to use a mix of matrix-station intercom connections and belt packs on a party line to communicate across the venue — something they typically don’t get to do. This enabled very effective communications across all cameras and departments.”

Dugger added that using the C300 cameras provided a taste of what’s to come with 4K, as he and other truck companies start to consider the most effective upgrade strategies to meet those next-generation production requirements.

“We’ll have to retrain our brains to become more familiar with the film approach to production, where lens millimeters and F-Stops have a major effect on high-resolution image characteristics,” he said. “This project helped us understand how to achieve better light-balance in the absence of traditional shading, for example. The transition to 4K is going to force us to pay more attention to focus, resolution and other aspects related to the intensive imaging requirements.”

Bittree Reseller OM Systems Completes Two Large Patchbay Installations

Leading Uruguay Broadcaster Chooses Bittree for First OB Vehicle; Patchbays Also Chosen for DTH Satellite Provider’s New Facility

GLENDALE, Calif. — March 26, 2014 — Bittree today announced that its Argentinean distributor, OM Systems, has recently completed two high-profile customer projects integrating Bittree patching equipment. OM Systems installed a suite of Bittree’s high-bandwidth Micro-Video patchbays in the first OB van for a major broadcaster in Uruguay, and completed a large installation of Bittree three-row monitor patchbays for a leading direct-to-home satellite provider serving the Argentina and Columbia markets.

“As one of the leading patchbay manufacturers in the broadcast market, Bittree was the ideal choice to meet both of these customers’ complex requirements,” said Gabriel Sfara, technical manager at OM Systems. “The Bittree patching equipment is well-known for its reliability and durability; for instance, we did a major installation for a telco in Argentina several years ago, and the Bittree patchbays are still working perfectly.”

For its new OB van, the Montevideo, Uruguay-based broadcaster purchased five Bittree 2 x 48 Micro-Video patch panels and two high-density, 2 x 48 front-programmable Audio Bantam patch panels together with video and audio patchcords.

After comparing technical specifications and pricing among different patch panel suppliers, the satellite provider chose Bittree for its new headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There, OM Systems installed 100 2 x 24 high-bandwidth WECO video patchbays, 58 high-bandwidth Mini-WECO video patchbays in 1×32 to 2×32 configurations, and eight internally programmable audio patchbays. The installation also includes 200 WECO video patchcords, 200 video-to-BNC patchcords, and 50 Mini-WECO patchcords.

“In both of these customer engagements, OM Systems did an excellent job of demonstrating the reliability of Bittree patching systems and selling the breadth of our solutions,” said Glenn Garrard, CEO, Bittree. “The satellite provider, for instance, needed a patchbay vendor that could provide a wide selection of different solutions. OM Systems knew Bittree was well-equipped to provide a full range of models that would meet the customer’s exacting requirements.”

More information about Bittree’s full range of video and audio patching systems is available at www.bittree.com.

Joseph Electronics Releases DFT Series for Economical Signal Transport Over Fiber

NILES, Ill. — March 26, 2014 — Joseph Electronics (JE), the premier one-stop shop for the broadcast industry and provider of fiber termination and custom fiber solutions through Joseph Fiber Solutions (JFS), today announced its Digital Fiber Transport (DFT) Series of signal transport solutions. Designed for low cost and minimal rack space, these solutions can be customized to accommodate a variety of production requirements, especially for electronic newsgathering, small stadiums, and anywhere else that simple point-to-point solutions are required.

“In response to customer feedback, it became obvious to us that we needed to provide a solution that could be easily reconfigured, occupy only a single RU, have built-in redundancies, and not break the budget,” said Carl Roszczybiuk, director of engineering at Joseph Electronics. “With the DFT Series, we have combined some of the best fiber transport components available on the market with our integration and packaging strengths to come up with a solution that, we believe, sets the mark for economical signal transport over fiber.”

The DFT-8 is a 1-RU, low-cost solution for the bidirectional flow of up to eight video signals on a single fiber, with an option to equip the unit for fiber redundancy.

The DFT-12 EXP, new for this year and requiring only 2 RU, features 12 paths of 3G/HD-SDI and ASI signals over one or two fibers. Additionally, modules for AES or analog audio, MADI, 1 Gb Ethernet, RTS intercom, POV interface (genlock and video), or data can be fitted into the four available expansion slots to provide a complete signal transport solution for remote announce booths or split feeds. More modules are in development.

All signal paths for any unit in the DFT Series are user-configurable in pairs of two in order to meet any send/receive requirements, and redundant power supplies are standard for ensuring a complete backup of critical paths. In addition, full-fiber redundancy with automatic fail-safe switchover is available as an option for all DFT Series frames.

Wohler Offers AVB Card for Company’s Flagship AMP2 Series Audio/Video Monitor

Simple, Economical Solution Opens Door to Cost Savings and Operational Benefits Afforded by New AVB Standard

SAN FRANCISCO — March 25, 2014 — To allow media facilities to take advantage of the AVB standard in the monitoring realm, whether now or in the future, Wohler Technologies today announced a new AVB Monitoring Option card for the company’s flagship AMP2 Series modular audio/video monitoring solution, including the acclaimed AMP2-E16V system. Once the card and software update are installed on the AMP2 Series unit, AVB channels can be mixed, level-adjusted, and monitored alongside AES, SDI, analog, and other input types, and in the same fashion.

“AVB promises compelling benefits including simpler network infrastructure, lower implementation costs, unified management, and the ability to deliver current and next-generation video and audio applications with high quality of service,” said John Terrey, vice president, sales at Wohler Technologies. “We are making AVB support available within the widely used AMP2-E16V audio/video monitor to assure that Wohler customers have an economical and practical means of taking advantage of this important standard.”

The Wohler implementation of AVB is unique in that AMP2-E16V monitoring units already deployed in the field may be upgraded easily to support AVB. No additional dedicated system is necessary. Rather, as a result of the series’ modular design, users can add AVB support via a 100 Base-T Ethernet port and familiar RJ45 connection when needed. Just like any other module for the AMP2-E16V, the AVB card occupies a single card slot. Because users can add AVB inputs without losing any of their other inputs, they retain the full power and flexibility of their AMP2 monitoring systems.

Each AVB Monitoring Option card decodes two AVB streams of eight channels each (IEC 61883-6 format), and these two streams must be locked to the same media clock. AVB channels can be output via AES and analog outputs or re-embedded within an SDI stream. Going forward, those Wohler customers who employ the AVB card will be able to update its firmware just as they would the firmware for any other I/O module.

“The AMP2-E16V’s open architecture and ease of use have made it a popular choice for broadcasters’ most demanding applications, and these characteristics allow for a seamless upgrade of the system to support AVB,” continued Terrey. “Users simply download the software update from Wohler and insert the AVB Monitoring Option card into the monitoring unit, and they’ve made their unit AVB-compliant.”

Further information on the AMP2 Series and other Wohler products is available at www.wohler.com.
