New Endemol Sport Studios Back HARMAN Studer Vista 5 Digital Consoles

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands –Situated at the MediArena in Amsterdam, the new Endemol Sport studios have been equipped with two 42-fader HARMAN Studer Vista 5 digital mixing consoles as part of an innovative production design, involving three studios and three galleries on the same fiber backbone.

The consoles were supplied by Heynen, Studer’s Dutch distributors, and installed by system integrator DutchView. These form the audio control of a sophisticated fit-out initiated by Eredivisie Media & Marketing to mark the start of the 2013-2014 Dutch football season. Three new HD studios and production galleries, dedicated to match-day programming and highlights, have been built and equipped for this purpose.

The project’s primary objectives were to improve both the quality of content contribution across multiple platforms and the overall experience for viewers tuning in to the Fox Sports Eredivisie football pay-TV channels.

Undertaking the conceptual design and specification was a team comprising Victor Winkelhage (head of production Endemol Sport), Jinne Tania (consultant Fox/Eredivisie) and SjaakVreeburg (Resources Manager Endemol). It was Vreeburg who produced the tender document, and later acted as project manager for the construction of the studios.

The aim was to achieve an innovative mix of cutting-edge studio technology and IP-based platforms, with direct access from, and full integration between, technology and editing using Riedel MediorNet media networking.

“We can now handle three different live programmes on three different channels, using one video/audio router for the three studios, one intercom system, Virtual studio manager and other software solutions,” said Vreeburg. “The workflow from EVS is directly streamed to the storage facility. We can start editing instantly on up to 12 sets for direct playback in the studio by IP-directory or file transfer to the Fox play-out facility and master control room in Hilversum.”

The conceptual difference of the sports studios is that the content sits right at the center—not only for TV but also for Internet streaming (and C-Cast) of mobile devices and tablets. “This enables us to deal more with sport and less with technical issues,” Vreeburg added. “The combination of incoming lines and the connection to the Studer mixer and the intercom givers us so much more flexibility.”

The Studer solution was adopted on the recommendation of DutchView, supplier of technical facilities and crew, working with Dutch system integrator D&MS. “We knew the quality and flexibility of Studer’s Vista series and were deliberating between the Vista 1 or Vista 5. Jinne and I visited the Integrated Systems Europe Show to satisfy questions about the MADI router, number of faders and stage boxes, Input/Output boards, de-embedding and routing. Niels [Mijnlieff, product specialist from distributors, Heynenbv] provided all the answers we needed and DutchView advised us to opt for the Vista 5 in view of the configuration required.”

The Studer platform was recommended for its audio quality, ease of setup, control and operation, the analog approach of the console and the experience DutchView has in working with the consoles. “We have lots of trained audio engineers who are extremely familiar with Studer Vista consoles and operating systems,” stated DutchView’s Robert Reparon. “There is also the possible expansion of the system with additional Studer preamp stageboxes from our own stock.”

Although DutchView has historically been the house supplier for Endemol, and supplied the facilities for the Eredivisies Studio (Dutch Premier League League channel) it nevertheless had to participate in a 3-way tender process. Having nominated DutchView, Endemol and Fox then addressed the configuration details—namely to build three complete new studios (designated 4, 5, and 6) each with four cameras and LED lighting, while Studio 5 and 6 each have six projectors for background projection in the set. The two Vista 5 consoles will mix programs in Studio 5 and 6, alongside Grass Valley vision mixers, Vizrt studio and match graphics.

Each Vista 5 is equipped with the SCore Live processor and accompanied by a 6U 19” Input Output Frame, with a Studer D21m 3U I/O Frame, each frame equipped with redundant power supply. This is populated with five SCore Live DSP boards; SCore Live Bridge board; Sync Generator board; GPIO Board; 12 Mic/Line inputs; 16 analog Line inputs; 24 analog Line outputs, eight digital AES/EBU inputs (stereo); eight digital AES/EBU outputs (stereo); MADI I/O board; threeMADI input/output board (Hub) optical with single mode fiber I/O; two HD board for link to DSP core; two 19” 1U Fan units and two 19” 1U air deflection panels; two19” 1U air deflection panels with cable feed-through; Serial Merger Card; Vista 5 System Software; and Configuration Editor software.

All the signals coming from the venues, the master control room and local play out servers are merged into MADI streams via a third-party audio router. Local studio audio sources (such as mics) are patchable directly to the Studer D21 I/O frame.

The configuration was undertaken by DutchView, whose senior engineers also provided operational training, while Heynen commissioned the systems. In addition, the systems integrator also provides two OB vans for covering four soccer matches during a weekend—both equipped with Vista consoles and D21 routing systems.

Summarized Robert Reparon, “All our audio engineers are very satisfied with the Vista setup in the studios. They feel comfortable during the shows and are confident with a system on which they rely.”

And SjaakVreeburg concluded, “There is no comparison between the present configuration and the situation before, with usage of all eight audio channels, the incoming lines, live studio production, commentary positions and playback from EVS via the excellent interface between Riedel and Studer. This has given us greater flexibility, speed, multitasking, fewer faults and a better operation/understanding between directors and audio technicians.”

Calrec Audio Broadcast Console Introduced as Callisto Now Goes by Name ‘Summa’

Rebranding of Elegant Audio Console Reflects Function as Summing Engine While Resolving Potential Trademark Issue

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — March 25, 2014 — Calrec Audio today announced that it is rebranding its Callisto audio console with a new name: Summa. The console, which will make its NAB Show debut next month in Las Vegas, is designed for broadcast professionals who need a straightforward solution for producing creative and engrossing broadcast audio, but not all of the resources offered by Calrec’s Apollo and Artemis consoles.

“The term Summa is mainly used for texts that ‘sum up’ knowledge in a field, and the name also reflects the fact that a mixing console is essentially a summing engine,” said Henry Goodman, Calrec’s head of sales and marketing. “More fundamentally, we took the decision to change the name because Callisto was recently registered by another pro audio company! We missed the registration, and we have consequently been asked to change it, which of course we have agreed to do.”

Designed to ensure intuitive operation in live broadcast applications, Summa simplifies even complex workflow tasks, such as creating mix-minus feeds, with a highly intuitive GUI suitable for a broad range of operator levels. Users control the console via a 17-inch multitouch screen inspired by familiar tablet technology. The crisp, high-resolution display provides elegant controls and clear presentation of information. The console’s other large displays are fully configurable to display bus, output, and loudness meters, and they feature dedicated metering, routing, and processing information per fader.

The physical control surface is available in fixed 20-, 32- and 44-fader configurations with a streamlined layout. Each channel strip has only the most essential mechanical controls, featuring a fader, two flexible control cells, and a dedicated gain pot.

The console uses Calrec’s award-winning Bluefin2 technology at its core, and the same integral Hydra2 technology as the Apollo and Artemis consoles. Bluefin2 provides Summa with a pool of 180 channel processing paths, which can be assigned as mono, stereo, or 5.1 channels. Because there is no resource-sharing across the DSP, all facilities are available on all channels at all times. Summa has eight groups, four mains (all of which can be mono, stereo, or 5.1), 16 auxes, and 32 tracks. The broadcast-focused feature set also includes complete system redundancy, dedicated delay on all paths with additional assignable input and output delay, mechanical PFL overpress on all faders, and three 5.1 studio monitor outputs.

Calrec will showcase Summa consoles in 12+8, 24+8, and 36+8 iterations at its booth (C1746) at the 2014 NAB Show. Further information about Calrec and its products is available at calrec.com and community.calrec.com.

NUGEN Audio to Showcase Advanced Loudness Solutions for American Film and Television Industry at 2014 NAB Show

Increased NAB Presence and Recent Opening of New York Office Re-affirm Company’s Commitment to North American Marketplace

LEEDS, U.K. — March 25, 2014 — With a special emphasis on the emerging loudness requirements of American broadcasters, NUGEN Audio is presenting its complete family of industry-leading solutions for loudness compliance at the 2014 NAB Show. In its booth, C561, the company will introduce MultiMonitor, a versatile new software solution for multichannel loudness and true-peak monitoring. In addition, NUGEN Audio will highlight the latest enhancements to its existing products — including new features for its Loudness Management Batch (LMB) processor; Pro Tools 11 support for the Stereopack toolset for stereo image enhancement and manipulation; and an update of the VisLM visual loudness metering plug-in that addresses key 7.1 audio requirements of the games and motion picture industries.

Also at the NAB Show, NUGEN Audio will preview its new SEQ-S linear spline-based match equalizer and the latest upgrade of the company’s Visualizer audio analysis suite with support for the Avid(R) AAX 64-bit format on both PC and Mac(R) computers. Both are expected to ship by late May 2014.

“With the ramifications of the CALM Act sinking in, North American broadcasters are facing the new realities of loudness monitoring and management and the changes they have to make to ensure compliance,” said Jon Schorah, creative director, NUGEN Audio. “The NAB Show is the perfect opportunity for us to maintain visibility and communicate with the North American marketplace. We’re looking forward to showing broadcasters just how easy, intuitive, and cost-effective software-based loudness management can be.”

MultiMonitor is a powerful new loudness and true-peak monitoring software application ideal for master control facilities. It offers up to 16 individual loudness and true-peak meters in mono, stereo, and 5.1 formats for up to 96 individual audio channels, with flexible window configurations and logging tools. MultiMonitor is standalone software for Windows(R) that provides flexible, real-time monitoring in full compliance with CALM, ITU-R BS. 1770, ATSC A/85, EBU R128, and other global loudness regulations and standards.

For high-throughput applications, NUGEN Audio’s LMB is an off-line file-based loudness analysis and correction program designed for rapid assessment and correction of files for loudness and true-peak content to ITU-R BS.1770 based specifications. With a drag-and-drop interface and/or specific watched folders, LMB saves operator time by automatically handling the process of checking and conforming files to multiple broadcast criteria. The solution also includes an MXF file-handling option that enables direct analysis and correction of audio in an MXF container while preserving all other data within the file. New for the 2014 NAB Show, NUGEN Audio has added new loudness range features to its LMB batch processing loudness correction tool that make it easier for operators to repurpose audio content for different types of playout; for instance, repurposing audio from a feature film to be used in a broadcast.

NUGEN Audio’s Stereopack will be making its North American debut at the 2014 NAB Show. Stereopack is a complete toolset for stereo image enhancement and manipulation including expansion, positioning, and low-frequency control, providing maximum flexibility in a highly accessible and configurable combination of powerful tools. The Stereopack plug-ins include Stereoizer, a high-specification stereo image manipulation tool; Monofilter, which enables users to align and balance low frequencies with minimal effort to create solid, natural-sounding bass; and Stereoplacer, an advanced fine-tune parametric balancing control tool that allows users to tune each band to specific frequencies and move the frequency content around in the stereo sound stage. Each plug-in is compatible with AAX, RTAS, VST, and Audio Unit standards.

In addition, NUGEN Audio will introduce a new version of its VisLM visual loudness metering plug-in. VisLM provides an easy-to-use, standard-compliant way to measure, compare, and contrast loudness during production, broadcast, and post-production, on the fly or for entire sections of audio. The latest release includes added support for 7.1 audio channels and VST3 audio, a new RTAS AudioSuite plug-in for fixed continuous reset in auto mode, improved routing in the stand-alone mode, and a new analyze/render option.

In February, NUGEN Audio announced the opening of a North American office in New York City and the appointment of Simon Kerr as chief marketing officer. In addition to overseeing the company’s global marketing strategy, Kerr manages the company’s North American operations. More information about NUGEN Audio products is available at www.nugenaudio.com.

SunBriteTV’s Backyard of the Year Contest Concludes with Stunning Backyard Featuring Poolside Outdoor Television

THOUSAND OAKS, California— After receiving dozens of spectacular submissions throughout 2013, SunBriteTV’s inaugural Backyard of the Year contest came to a close with Creative Audio Video and Automation named the Grand Prize Winner! President and Owner Kevin Burnley was responsible for the beautiful winning installation, which featured a custom mounting surface, poolside swim-up bar and, of course, a SunBriteTV outdoor television.

“We had worked with the client before and he had already built the pergola and the swim-up bar,” said Burnley. “Our biggest challenge was finding a way to mount the SunBriteTV to the pergola while preserving the view— a custom mount ended up being the perfect solution!”

The installation, which spanned three months from planning stages to completion, features two Polk Atrium6 speakers mounted to the pergola, two concealed Atlas Sound GST-G speakers in the ground, and a SunBriteTV Signature Series 32” 3260HD.

Creative Audio Video and Automation, based in St. Louis, MO, was established in 2011 and has been anchored by Burnley’s 18+ years on experience in the custom install business.

“We’ve exclusively used SunBriteTV in all of our outdoor installations since day one,” said Burnley. ”Many customers approach us and ask about installing an indoor TV outside — this is something we refuse to do not only for their safety, but our own liability.”

Designed for permanent installation outdoors, SunBriteTV’s outdoor televisions are superior to indoor televisions when it comes to both safety and performance. Specialized gaskets and insulated electronics keep all wiring safe from every kind of natural element from moisture to insects. All models function flawlessly in temperatures spanning -24 to 122°F and feature ruggedized exteriors that can handle any climate. The bright, anti-glare screens are specially designed to deliver bright HD images outdoors, day or night.

Vista Systems Spyders Start the Day Inside and Outside NBC’s “Today” Show

There are Spyders on the new set of NBC’s iconic “Today” show, and the image processors from Vista Systems play an important role in delivering the engaging visual look of the program to audiences nationwide. The first new set in seven years combines modern and homey vibes and showcases multiple high-resolution LED displays of various shapes and sizes. The redesigned set for Studio 1A skillfully unites the interior home base with fans and happenings outside in Rockefeller Plaza.

Three Spyder X20s drive LED displays provided by D3, a global technology company that designs, engineers and manufactures turnkey LED display and lighting solutions. Two Spyders, a main system and back up, are dedicated to the interior set where D3 has positioned a retractable 1.9mm high-resolution LED display at the studio’s main interview area; a curved 2.5mm high-resolution LED display above the anchor desk; a 2.5mm high resolution LED column display; and a modular 1.9mm high-resolution LED window display capable of separating into six different panels and rotating 180 degrees to face Rockefeller Plaza.

D3 had previously designed the custom LED video and ticker display system that wraps the entire corner of the studio’s glass-walled exterior. The 8×8-inch modules consist of over 1,000 6mm LED panels; one Spyder is devoted to this display, which serves as a dynamic backdrop for special events and show features-and showcases live video and text headlines.

“There are five display elements in the studio, and all are different sizes, resolutions and shapes including LEDs, microtiles and video walls,” said Meric Adriansen, managing partner at at D3. “They all need to be driven by a variety of different content: DVI signals, HDSDI signals. D-TOOLS TO DEMONSTRATE WORKFLOW-ENHANCING MOBILE QUOTE APP at ISC WEST 2014

Companion app to SIX 2013 enables security systems integrators to remotely generate bids and later import them into D-Tools SIX 2013 for full project design and management.

D-Tools Mobile Quote is a Companion App to D-Tools System Integrator that extended the user's workflow to a mobile environment for onsite consultations.

CONCORD, CA (ISC West 2014 booth #26135) MARCH 26, 2014 D-Tools, Inc., the worldwide leader in system integration software, today announced that the Company will demonstrate its new iOS-based iPad® companion app for its flagship product, SIX 2013 at ISC West April 2-4, 2014 at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas (D-Tools booth #26135). Available now for D-Tools partners worldwide, the new release adds mobile quoting capabilities that enable Commercial and Residential AV integrators to generate quotes natively on an iPad, then import them into the full D-Tools SIX 2013 software platform for further project design and management. Delivering on D-Tools’ commitment to streamline product updates and enhancements by consolidating them into an annual release, this new companion app will immediately extend the highly functional D-Tools workflow to mobile sales and specification teams.

A native iOS application, the D-Tools Mobile Quote app leverages D-Tools’ extensive manufacturer product library by enabling integrators to access and integrate product category and package data from their SIX 2013 catalog while working with customers in the field. Integrators can enter client and contact information into the iPad app, then walk prospective customers through available installation scenarios in order to create a quote for approval. Once complete, the resulting quote can then be imported into SIX 2013 for additional design work and synchronization.

The Mobile Quote app uses many of D-Tools’ workflow concepts, including the specification of locations and systems, which allows integrators to provide packages or pre-configured systems for inclusion in the quote. Labor and general pricing will be calculated to give the customer an accurate proposal, which can then be signed off for approval on the spot.

“Delivering features that enable our users to create quotes in the field is a natural evolution for us. The D-Tools Mobile Quote app is an important component that ensures our platform continues to meet the growing needs of our expanding security customer base,” said Adam Stone, President and Founder of D-Tools. “The Mobile Quote app release is just the beginning. In fact, we are already working on additional mobile capabilities that significantly enhance our product roadmap. As we have demonstrated since the release of SIX last year, our new platform enables us to deploy new features as part of rapid and regular release cycles, which will ultimately provide our customers a clear path for sustained growth. We think ISC West attendees will be excited by the capabilities of this powerful new app. ”

More than 4,500 companies worldwide use D-Tools Systems Integrator Software to streamline the estimation, design, and project management processes associated with the installation and integration of low voltage systems.
