NAB 2014: Digital Nirvana Introduces FIFOPro Ingest Back-Up System for Broadcast Production

Creates edit-ready backups of all live ingested media, eliminating the need for manual recording, cataloging, storing and transcoding of back-up tapes

Fremont, CA – Digital Nirvana will give the broadcast industry its first look at the company’s new FIFOPro ingest back-up system at the NAB 2014 convention, to be held from April 5-10th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Digital Nirvana will showcase this powerful new production tool in Booth #SU11017.

The FIFOPro system was engineered to streamline workflows for news departments and live production applications. Traditionally for SAN back up, broadcasters have relied on recording onto multiple tape decks, one for each feed, with station personnel completing the cumbersome tasks of loading, labeling, cataloging and storing each tape for back-up insurance. In this mode of operation, if the need arises to restore from tape, it must be manually de-archived, taken to the editing bay, loaded and then transcoded into the proper format prior to editing.

With the FIFOPro ingest back-up system, the workflow is automated. FIFOPro continually records and archives multiple HD-SDI feeds on a rolling First-in/First-out (FIFO) basis, retaining all content for 72 hours before deleting it from the system. This data is automatically recorded in an edit-ready AVCi 50 format along with its metadata, including channel, date and time. If original content is lost or damaged, it’s a simple process to find and access the stored media via web browser and export the selected clips to the watch folder for immediate editing.

By eliminating the need for multiple tape decks, transcoding and time-consuming metadata management, the FIFOPro ingest back-up system is the perfect solution to streamline workflows, save time, space and money.

RTI Announces New Drivers for Fusion Research’s EPIC Movie Server Platform and Ovation Music Streamers

New Two-Way Drivers Facilitate Seamless Integration of Fusion’s Media Servers Into RTI Control Systems for an Unmatched User Experience

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — April 3, 2014 — Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI) has announced the availability of new two-way drivers for Fusion Research’s popular EPIC movie server platform and Ovation music streamers. Developed by Fusion, the new drivers make it simple for integrators to incorporate the media servers into RTI’s cost-effective control systems, providing their clients with powerful control and enhanced media navigation for the ultimate user experience.

Ovation streamers provide simple music distribution throughout the home with support for up to four sources in one box and up to 20 discrete sources with Ovation wireless players. Providing a complete music entertainment hub, the Ovation line supports over two dozen streaming apps, including Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM, MOG, and Slacker; thousands of Internet radio stations; full iTunes® synchronization; and CD ripping for personal collections.

Fusion’s EPIC movie servers allow users to rip, digitally store, and conveniently access their entire DVD and Blu-ray collection from a single-unit solution. Each server features a built-in single-zone player, and up to six additional Fusion players can be added to expand the system to independent zones throughout the home. A commercial server is also available for expansion to up to 40 zones.

With the new Fusion two-way drivers, users have an intuitive control interface that allows them to browse through their media easily, while viewing cover art as well as song and movie metadata, right on their RTI controller. The control experience is further enhanced with the RTI control system, which allows the end user to select the location they want to play music and movies in, control the volume, and make adjustments to any other electronic systems in the home or commercial facility — all without having to switch user interfaces.

“We’ve been receiving requests for tighter integration with the RTI control platform for some time,” said Joseph Storm, CEO of Fusion Research. “By working directly with the RTI team, we’ve answered the call with drivers that offer installers seamless integration of our media servers into RTI systems, while providing their customers with an unparalleled control experience.”

“Media servers are becoming an integral part of today’s home entertainment system, and we are working hard to expand our offering of two-way drivers to help our dealers meet this demand,” said Pete Baker, vice president of sales and marketing for RTI. “We are very excited to add Fusion’s popular line of products to our growing list, making it easier than ever for installers to put their customers’ complete entertainment world right at their fingertips.”

The Fusion drivers are compatible with all XP control processors. Using the latest version of RTI’s award-winning Integration Designer® programming software, installers can easily provide their clients with a completely customized, intuitive control experience, in a drag-and-drop programming environment.

The drivers for the EPIC movie server platform and Ovation music streamers are available now on the Fusion website at http://fusionrd.com/rti.html and on RTI’s website at www.rticorp.com in the Driver Store.

Women in CE Announces Shelley Zalis as Closing Keynote Speaker for ‘The Power of Connectivity’ Career Enhancement Forum

CEO of Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange to Deliver Address on the Power of Emotion

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — April 3, 2014 — Women in Consumer Electronics (CE), an industry organization that promotes the advancement of women in the CE industry, today announced the selection of Shelley Zalis as closing keynote speaker for the third annual Career Enhancement Forum, titled “The Power of Connectivity.” Her powerful message — “The Power of Emotion&Bring it to the Boardroom!” — will address how emotion and especially passion drive change, transformation, and commitment. Held in conjunction with CE Week, the Career Enhancement Forum will take place on June 24 at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

Zalis has been a leader of change in the market research industry throughout her career. As a self-described black sheep, she envisioned and pioneered the use of online research well before any other company recognized its full potential. Under her guidance as founder and CEO, OTX (Online Testing Exchange) became the 18th largest research company in the world and was acquired in January by Ipsos. She now leads Ipsos’ global innovation center, the Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange, which is pioneering next-generation research solutions, as well as heads The Girl’s Lounge, a social platform for women in the marketing, advertising, research, and CE industries. In 2008, Zalis was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year(R) award, and received the ARF Great Minds in Innovation award in 2010. In May, she will be honored by the UJA-Federation of New York’s Marketing Communications Division with the Global Marketing Leadership Visionary Award.

“As a strong proponent of entrepreneurial leadership and the advancement of women in key executive positions in the boardroom, I’m excited to headline the Women in CE forum as closing keynote,” said Zalis. “Men and women are equally important, and it’s a simple fact that we just deal with issues differently. I’m looking forward to sharing my views in hopes of motivating attendees to unleash the power of emotion and fuel their careers with a passionate drive to succeed.”

“We’re thrilled with the caliber and variety of keynote speakers, experts, and panelists at the 2014 Women in CE Career Enhancement Forum,” said Carol Campbell, founder of Women in CE. “We’re looking forward to Shelley’s keynote, which will touch on different aspects of personal and professional development, providing attendees with a robust set of tips and best practices they can apply to empower their own career advancement.”

At “The Power of Connectivity,” attendees will also be treated to an opening keynote by Charlotte Beers, CEO, chairman, Undersecretary of State, teacher, and author of “I’d Rather Be in Charge: A Legendary Business Leader’s Roadmap for Achieving Pride, Power, and Joy at Work.” Currently serving on the Board of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Beers has received a number of accolades throughout her remarkable career, including the Distinguished Service Medal — the State Department’s highest honor — and induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame.

Returning to the Career Enhancement Forum to lead a featured workshop is Sam Horn, ideapreneur and author of “POP! Create the Perfect Pitch, Title and Tagline for Anything.” In her presentation “Intrigue: Create Interest, Earn Respect, Connect With Anyone,” Horn will provide audience members with new and inspiring ways to scale their influence and win buy-in from busy, distracted decision makers for priority projects. In addition, award-winning news and technology journalist Andrea Smith will present the featured workshop “Social Media and the Power of Connectivity.” In this workshop, Smith will discuss social media best practices geared toward professional empowerment and promoting business success.

Featured panels at the event will be led by Samantha Smith, executive vice president of Etail Eye, North America, and Deena Ghazarian, vice president of sales and finance for Monster Products Inc. Smith will lead a spirited discussion, presenting success stories of women who have truly mastered the power of connectivity. Ghazarian, a 2014 Women in CE Legacy Award Honoree, will lead “The Power of Lean in Circles,” where she will introduce the “Lean in Circle” as made popular in the book of the same title by Sheryl Sandberg.

The forum kicks off with a networking breakfast, followed by a full day of sessions, and a closing reception that wraps up the day’s events. Held at the Rubin Museum of Art at 150 W. 17th St. in New York, the forum is open to women working in all segments of the CE industry, including manufacturers, major retailers, specialty retailers, suppliers, integrators, distributors, manufacturers’ representatives, buying groups, and consultants.

Euroshow Deploys HARMAN’s Martin Professional To Bring A Fairy Tale To Life At Moscow’s Olympisky Arena

AARHUS, Denmark — In conjunction with the beginning of Russia’s longest school holiday, Moscow’s famous Olympisky Arena hosted a 2-week children’s project, Circus of Ded Moroz – 2 (Father Frost’s Circus), at the end of December 2013. In order to showcase a stunning, mystical fairy tale light show, Euroshow and lighting designer Alexey Zhuravlev deployed a world-class lighting system featuring HARMAN’s Martin fixtures.

Euroshow supplied lighting fixtures for the event surrounding a large Christmas tree which included: 36 MAC Viper Profile, 20 MAC 2000 Wash XB, 12 MAC III Air FX, 48 MAC Aura, 96 MAC 101, five Atomic 3000 DMX, 30 RUSH MH3 Beam and three Jem Ready 365 Hazer fixtures.

The New Year’s project for children at Olympisky has gained a traditional status already, but for Zhuravlev, it was his debut. Producers of the event knew about Zhuravlev due to his successful work with numerous clubs and concerts, so they invited him to implement the basic idea of creating a dynamic event that children would love and remember.

The main story of the Circus of Ded Moroz – 2 was influenced by an enormous event – the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Fairy tale characters from different stories and different countries met each other on the arena space to compete for the highest sports prizes. This story needed a bright and colorful setting, something totally different from traditional theatrical drama.

Zhuravlev analyzed the individual elements of the script together with the director of the show, highlighting the key moments and offering an individual decoration for each. “I had a few ideas for this show,” explained Zhuravlev. “For example, I put the MAC 101’s around the arena at the bottom and made a ‘mirrored’ installation at the top, so that each fixture was above another fixture. This scheme allowed us to create a lot of different, interesting lighting pictures for numerous events.”

Because some events in the program featured aerialists in the space below the roof, it was necessary to change the lighting concept and make accents on the flights in midair. Zhuravlev chose the powerful MAC III AirFX fixtures based on a 1500W lamp and the new Jem Ready 365 fog generators in order to work with the challenges.

“It is my first work experience with MAC III AirFX”, Zhuravlev explained. “I had seen these fixtures before and I have known what I could get from them. Of course, I was attracted by their functionality to create midair and beam effects. MAC III AirFX is a perfect fixture to make magnificent decor for aerialists’ routines. Besides, these fixtures are very bright, so in other words, they were the perfect solution for this project.”

For the circus arena area, Zhuravlev deployed the MAC 2000 Wash XB, MAC Aura and MAC 101, along with the MAC Viper Profile with the gobo #1, which served as the main lighting tool.

“In the stage design we rarely use this gobo, but in this project it was very useful for me,” Zhuravlev said. “The action takes place in a circular arena, and it is very difficult to make smooth wash effects and stay within the borders, and I had to think about how not to confuse the audience. With gobo #1 of MAC Viper Profile, I could wash the necessary parts of the arena without compromising the main texture aspect.”

The MAC Viper also played a familiar role for Zhuravlev, creating bright and powerful projections that draw beautiful pictures on the surface.

“This fixture is very bright with excellent projection quality,” he continued. “Of course, I used this instrument at 100%. For example, when I needed to ‘move’ artists on the pavement in Sweden, I used gobo-imitating pavement, creating a very realistic effect. Another example is a traditional Russian theme, followed with the appearance of Samovar with cups. By the way, MAC Viper Profile has a very suitable gobo for this scene, as if designed especially for Russia.”
