SMPTE Announces Calls for Student Papers and Louis F. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Applications

Student Paper and Scholarship Awards to Highlight Up-and-Coming Generation of Industry Leaders and Innovators

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — April 22, 2014 – The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(R) (SMPTE(R)), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced a call for papers for a special student issue of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, as well as for the SMPTE Student Paper Award. SMPTE is also accepting applications for the Louis F. Wolf Memorial Scholarship.

“Education is one of SMPTE’s three pillars, and there is no better way to demonstrate our commitment to education than by recognizing and supporting students, who are the future leaders of our industry and our future members,” said Pat Griffis, education vice president at SMPTE. “We look forward to reading the submissions every year because they highlight the insight and vision of up-and-coming innovators in the field, which gives us all an indication of where the industry is headed.”

SMPTE’s Student Paper Award honors an outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a SMPTE Student Member that deals with some technical phase of motion pictures, television, photographic instrumentation, or their closely allied arts and sciences. The paper receiving the Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, providing recognition both for the author and the institution at which the work was done. The Louis F. Wolf Memorial Scholarship is open to SMPTE Student Members who are full-time students enrolled in an accredited high school or two- or four-year college or university. The scholarship offers as much as $2,000 toward the cost of tuition at the student’s educational institution. The application form and requirements are online at www.smpte.org/scholarships. As with the Student Paper Award, the application deadline is July 15.

The award winner and the scholarship recipient will each receive a full conference registration to the SMPTE 2014 Technical Conference & Exhibition, Oct. 20-23 in Hollywood, Calif., where they will be recognized during the SMPTE 2014 Honors and Awards Ceremony.

SMPTE has issued a call for papers for a special student issue of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. Students in the field of motion pictures and television with an emphasis on technology are encouraged to submit papers on technical, engineering, and scientific developments in motion pictures, television, and related fields. Chosen papers will be published in the November/December student issue of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal.

Each paper must describe work done by the author as a student, and each paper must address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media technology industry. Papers that are commercial or promotional in nature will not be considered, nor will those that have already been published. An award-winning broadcast music mix engineer, Ollie Nesham has a wealth of experience in coordinating music recording and broadcast requirements for major live festivals, shows and stadium concerts. NEP Upgrades Mobile Fleet With Embedded Audio as Part of Large-Scale Technology Enhancement Project

With Upgrade to Grass Valley Switchers Now Well Underway, NEP to Install 16-Channel Embedded Audio Support on Seven Units by Fall

PITTSBURGH — April 22, 2014 — NEP has begun phase two of its large-scale, fleetwide technology enhancement with major audio infrastructure upgrades for seven of the company’s U.S.-based mobile broadcasting vehicles. The enhancement includes router upgrades to support 16 channels of embedded audio across all recording and playback devices, as well as inbound and outbound paths to remote outside broadcasting locations.

“The transition to embedded audio over HD-SDI video will be a huge asset for both our engineering crews and our broadcast customers, especially those that need to create multiple audio streams in 5.1 to support various international markets,” said George Hoover, chief technology officer, NEP. “In addition to reducing engineering and operating costs as well as weight, rack space, and power consumption — always important factors on mobile units — embedded audio will better equip us to support the channel payloads required for multichannel audio in large-scale, live mobile productions.”

Although the audio will eventually be upgraded on NEP’s entire fleet of U.S. mobile broadcasting units, the company is planning to complete the upgrade on seven HD vehicles over this summer. They include PESA router upgrades for full embedded audio with LED legend-able panels in SS18, SS16, SS20, ND5, and ND6. The audio upgrade is a full-featured retrofit that will enable channel swapping, shuffle, delay, and phase adjustments for each path while maintaining full sample accuracy. This audio enhancement project will also include audio console upgrades to NCPX and NCPVII, including the addition of BlueFin technology.

Since announcing the massive fleetwide enhancements in January, NEP has made significant progress on the first phase, upgrading 30 HD vehicles to state-of-the-art Grass Valley(R) K-Frame(TM) modular video processing engines with Kayenne(R) Video Production Center switcher platforms. In addition to the switcher and embedded audio retrofits, NEP will launch other phases of the enhancement program in the coming months. These include improving the vehicles’ slow-motion replay capabilities using EVS XT3 servers, replacing copper cable with fiber-optic cable to interconnect multiple vehicles on larger productions, and new monitor walls in several mobile units. NEP has also begun a refurbishing and upgrade program for its B units and a project to install The Wall(TM), the company’s new Apple(R) iPad(R) app for fast and easy configuration of complex monitor walls. The fleet upgrade will take place in cycles over the next three years in order not to disrupt scheduled productions.

TG Baker Delivers Supreme Audio to Waterloo Station with HARMAN’s JBL Professional Intellivox Loudspeakers

LONDON, United Kingdom – In a multi-phase, multi-year undertaking, TG Baker (Sound) Ltd. recently completed an upgrade to the audio system at the London Waterloo station with HARMAN’s JBL Professional Intellivox loudspeakers.

After the successful completion of several other major station projects throughout the United Kingdom, TG Baker Sound was approached by Network Rail framework contractors to put a design together for the London Waterloo station. With the goal of improving system intelligibility throughout the station (beginning with the concourse area for the 2012 London Olympics, followed by the rest of the train shed and ancillary station areas after the games), TG Baker Sound faced a number of challenges.

London Waterloo is the UK’s largest and busiest railway station and like many large railway stations it provided the sound system designers with a significant challenge. Designing a system that can deliver clear and intelligible messages to the passengers in a station with a high reverberation time and high levels of background noise is never easy. For this reason, TG Baker chose loudspeakers from the Intellivox DDS (beam shaping) range to enable them to aim the sound where it was needed, at the passengers.

“In addition to the hostile acoustic environment of the station, there was also a number of other projects going on in the station simultaneously, which not only dictated the heights at which we could install the loudspeakers on the concourse, but also affected the general layout of the system,” said Scott McLucas, Senior Project Engineer, TG Baker Sound. “The design on the main concourse changed several times due to advertising and retail balcony projects.”

The final design on the concourse includes 21 JBL Intellivox DS180 loudspeakers mounted in pairs at a height of 7.4 meters, with a single unit filling in the access route to platform 18. The main train shed has 50 Intellivox DSX280 loudspeakers spread across 18 platforms. “This design for the concourse is unique in that the ideal mounting height of the beam-steering loudspeakers in this environment is typically 2.1 to 2.5 meters,” McLucas noted. “However, with the pressure from the other projects, we have the concourse loudspeakers mounted much higher.”

To overcome this challenge, TG Baker worked to develop the unusual design that would not only meet the architectural challenge, allowing the loudspeakers to be mounted at 7.4 meters, but would also do so while delivering an acceptable level of acoustic performance and intelligibility of the system. “We have worked with Duran Audio on a stadium project previously in Dublin and have since been appointed the preferred Intellivox partner for the UK rail market,” McLucas added. “We continue to work closely with them on other major station projects and also tunnel projects which is a new market sector for us.”
