MIKO Event Equips New 15-Ton OB Van with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 Digital Console

TELFS, Austria – Austrian OB broadcast specialist MIKO Event & Rental has purchased a HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 for installation in a newly configured OB van. The hub of a fully redundant system, the all-in-one Studer control package—which had been one of the specification prerequisites—has provided MIKO with a ideal solution.

The company runs a fleet of trucks that provide outside broadcast services, mainly for ORF, the Austrian public service broadcaster, and Red Bull Media House, the multi-platform media company with a focus on sports, culture, and lifestyle.

The new MF11D 15-ton Ü-Wagen (OB van) has been designed as a hybrid solution for video and Internet broadcasts or as high-quality radio. The sound infrastructure can also support complete live recording (up to 7.1). Originally built by Krämer in Germany it was rebuilt by MIKO to handle these video broadcasts.

According to Michael Kogler, who founded MIKO Event & Rental in 1991, “Although the truck was built for a total weight of 15 tons, we reduced it to 12 tons to give us fewer limitations—leaving around 1.5 tons available for other equipment.”

He immediately highlights a key advantage of the Vista 1. “Our previous console weighed 600kg and required 2,100W of power [as well as its own conditioning circuit]. The Vista 1, run in conjunction with our existing Studer MADI Compact Stagebox (CSB), is substantially more economical on weight and power draw—and it doesn’t need an air conditioning circuit. So we can drop the electric power consumption from 3-phase 400V-32A to 16A.

“But best of all in Austria the climate is only extremely warm in July and August, so we only need to circulate fresh air; it means we can drop the electric power consumption again to a single phase 230V-16A—this is really amazing for such a truck!”

Following on from their existing 3.5-ton Ü-Wagen, MIKO believe this is the logical progression to enable image handling and allow third video production companies to rent space and install their own equipment (whereupon the sound area can be compacted if necessary). Kogler adds that it also provides their technicians with a more enjoyable experience when handling events ranging from Ski Alpine to live music events and other high profile TV shows for ORF.

“Having an all-in-one package such as Vista 1 means that this compact control platform can be used as a standalone system outside the truck—for example at classical and musical sound reinforcement events—and also places where the ÜW cannot go, such as high up in the mountains or on a ship,” he continued.

“We really like the Vista’s compact form factor, its ease of use and the excellent sound quality and we are now looking forward to adding the Vista FX option.”

Meanwhile, the existing CSB, with 48 Mic/Line In and 16 Line Out, is linked via two Neutrik DuoCon Extreme 150m long fibre cables.

The new MF11D Mainframe was commissioned at the beginning of April and used successfully for an ORF and RAI Bolzano worship transmission. Then on April 19, the first live ski transfer from St. Anton in the Arlberg region was tackled successfully with Pilger Film-und Videoproduktion from Innsbruck renting the van.

In conclusion Michael Kogler confirms that the MIKO technicians are satisfied that the Vista 1 meets all their technical requirements, while the OB-van itself conforms to the ARD SWR and VBG BGI -811 standards for Ü-Wagens.

Christie D4K25 Projector Wins PIPA Award

Christie®, a global audiovisual technologies company, is proud to announce that it recently received the first ever PIPA Award for the Christie D4K2560 DLP® 4K projector with TruLife™ electronics at Prolight + Sound 2014 in Frankfurt, Germany.

For the past 15 years, the Musik Media Verlag publishing house in Germany has organized the highly regarded Musikmesse International Press Award (MIPA), which honors the outstanding products for the music industry. Following the success of MIPA and to celebrate its 15th year, Musik Media decided to create the Prolight + Sound International Press Award (PIPA) for the first time. PIPA is an award that recognizes the best products in the professional audio and video industry, and is voted for by a global community of over 100 trade journalists working in the Pro-AV industry.

Nominated in the “Video / Projection Devices” category, the Christie D4K2560 with TruLife™ electronics won the award, having fended off competition from Digital Projection’s HIGHLite Laser 12K and Panasonic’s DZ12K projectors.

The award-winning Christie D4K2560 is a high-end 3-chip DLP® projector that has native 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution, offering ultra-realistic images and smoother video. In addition, the PIPA award particularly highlights the achievement of the unique Christie TruLife electronics, a breakthrough in high frame rate and high-resolution video projection. Christie TruLife enables 4K DLP® at 120Hz performance through its support of a video-processing pipeline of up to 1.2 Gigapixels per second – 10 times faster than full high-definition bandwidth – which not only benefits the Christie D4K25 and D4K35, but also permits the Christie Mirage 4K25 and Christie Mirage 4K35 to support various 3D interconnectivity formats.

Klaus Hilles, regional sales director DACH (Deutschland, Austria, Switzerland) for Christie, was presented with the award at a joint evening ceremony for the MIPA and PIPA awards at the Prolight + Sound show in Frankfurt; over 300 representatives of international manufacturers and distributors were in attendance.

Afterwards, Michael Garrido, senior product manager, Christie, commented, “It gives us great pleasure to receive this PIPA award and I would like to thank the international press for voting for our Christie D4K2560 DLP projector with TruLife electronics. DPA Microphones d:vote™ 4099 Adds More Bravura to Break of Reality Performances

Company’s renowned Instrument Microphone provides quartet with quality audio and ease of use on tour

NEW YORK, APRIL 29, 2014 – When a group of cellists decided to blend their classical music skills with their love of rock ‘n’ roll, the result was a cello-rock band known as Break of Reality. Comprised of three cellists and a percussionist, the group has been performing for more than a decade. During that time, the quartet has experimented with a series of audio setups, including both pickups and microphones, but continuously fell short of finding an ideal audio solution. That is, until they discovered DPA Microphones’ d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphone and its clip for the cello.

As the quartet takes to the road, the members praise their recently purchased d:vote 4099 setup for creating a new sense of comfort that previously did not exist when miking the cellos. The group has tested a variety of audio amplification setups, which evolved from an early dependence on pickups, and they say they can already recognize many benefits of the DPA mics, including a pristine natural sound and the unique mounting solution.

“We love the d:vote, I don’t know any other microphone of its kind that is designed specifically for the cello and that makes it a lot easier to work with,” shares Patrick Laird, cellist and Break of Reality co-founder. “Before we switched to DPA, we went through every type of pickup and eventually we got sick of the lack of a real cello sound. After that, we moved to a microphone system that had clip-on mics, but they weren’t specialized for string instruments like the d:vote 4099. With the old mics, we created a cable tie system to hold the mic securely to the instrument, because if we didn’t, the mic would occasionally fall off. We don’t have any of these problems with the d:vote 4099.

“We were very limited with our setup,” he continues. “If we had two back-to-back gigs in different places, we would have to cut off our whole cable tie system and take the microphones off. Now, the d:vote actually can fit inside the cases while still mounted to the cello, which provides a quick and simple setup. The mics have a great sound, too. The frequency response is much more balanced than anything we’ve used before, so it requires a lot less treatment in the venue.”

Now avid users, the quartet has familiarized themselves with DPA’s reputation for providing a highly durable and pristine sounding microphone. Plus, the d:vote 4099, designed with the touring musician in mind, can easily be unclipped and repositioned on the instrument, without any cable ties or other obstructions. This creates an effortless solution for the group. The accurate natural sound, balanced EQs and functionality of the microphone will come in handy as Break of Reality goes on tour through May.

“What’s especially cool about the mics is that we’re going to be using them in all types of venues on this tour, and that’s a big thing for us,” shares Laird. “Previously, when we performed at nice venues, we placed higher quality mics in front of the instruments to produce a better sound. When we played rock clubs, we had to go back to using pickups because our mics had feedback issues. But all that is behind us now. The d:vote is so versatile that we can use it as a professional microphone in 15,000-seat performing arts center auditoriums or for a simple amplification setup in small rock clubs.

“People in the industry, sound men, engineers, they have always told us we should really consider DPA Microphones,” he adds. “We didn’t make the switch for a while because of the cost of changing over our whole setup. But, we finally decided to make the move to DPA Microphones and we couldn’t be happier. They’re awesome, we love them.”

With the help of fan donations through the group’s Kickstarter campaign, the quartet is putting on a Music Education Tour, at which they will perform free concerts and host workshops at 10 school districts across the U.S. These performances will be held in conjunction with their regular tour schedule, in support of their latest album, TEN. In addition, 100 percent of the money raised at each performance will be donated to each school’s music programs. The overall goal is to collect more than $50,000 in support of music education. For its role in the campaign, DPA Microphones is donating additional d:vote 4099s, to be used as prizes on tour.

Formed in 2004 by Laird and percussionist, Ivan Trevino, who met at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, Break of Reality also features cellists Laura Metcalf and Adrian Daurov. Since its founding, the group has self-produced three records, with a forthcoming album appropriately named TEN, to celebrate a decade of success, released on March 25, 2014.

SoundTube IP-Addressable Speaker System Now Available

InfoComm 2014, Booth C9025 — SoundTube Entertainment’s STNet IP-Addressable speaker system is now in stock and available for delivery. The system provides a rack mountable 16-port switch and 40 watts PoE (Power over Ethernet) input power to its speakers along with report-back functions. Current speaker models include the in-ceiling IP-CM52-BGM, IP-CM52s-BGM, IP-CM62-BGM and IP-CM82-BGM, and the surface-mount IP-SM500i-II. Additional speaker models are slated to be added to the system in the future.

Using the CobraNet® audio standard as its backbone, the system allows each SoundTube speaker on the network to be powered via its Ethernet cable and individually set up and equalized. Each speaker can receive different audio signals and is continuously monitored by the system to provide report-back status to the main control point. Any failure in the speaker will immediately trigger an alarm (either visible or audible), and the system can be configured to send an e-mail message to the installer. The STNet is compatible with all other CobraNet-enabled control systems, and multiple SoundTube switches may be linked for large speaker systems.

In addition to the 16 Ethernet ports, the STNet-Switch includes two gigabit ports for linking of switches and a WAN port for connection to an outside network.

“IP-addressable speakers are a great way for system integrators to manage networked audio throughout an installation,” said Duke Ducoff, MSE Audio VP of Sales. “With our speakers’ higher input power, IP-addressable systems can now have better room coverage along with the alarm reporting that makes these systems so useful.”

Visitors to InfoComm are invited to the SoundTube booth for a hands-on demonstration of STNet.

Dugan Auto-Mixing Technologies Abound at InfoComm

InfoComm 2014, booth C10545 — Technologies from Dan Dugan Sound Design, the originator of automatic microphone mixing technology, have been integrated into audio products from three major manufacturers exhibiting at InfoComm.

New from Yamaha are QL Series mixers, first unveiled at ISE 2014. 16 channels of Dugan Speech System™ automatic mixing are incorporated as a standard in these new products, allowing the user to quickly insert Dugan processing for automatically optimized microphone gain distribution. Along with automatically managing gain of live microphones, the system effectively reduces feedback, studio noise and comb filtering to allow operators to concentrate on overall system performance.

Integrated Dugan mixing comes as a successor to the Dugan-MY16 plug-in card, jointly released by Yamaha and Dugan in 2011. The Dugan-MY16 is compatible with the Yamaha 01V96, DM1000, 02R96, DM2000, M7CL, LS9, DSP5D, PM5D, and DME24/64N. It also incorporates the Dugan Speech System for management of multiple live mics. The Dugan-MY16 card is available from Yamaha distributors worldwide.

The Dugan Automixer plug-in from Waves Audio is a software emulation of the Dugan Speech System™ for Waves MultiRack Native and MultiRack SoundGrid® systems. Like all Dugan automatic mixing controllers, this software automatically manages the gains of multiple microphones in real time to create fast, transparent cross-fades. It dramatically reduces feedback, studio noise and comb filtering from adjacent mics without introducing sonic artifacts.

The Dugan-VN16 plug-in card was developed and released during the past year in partnership with Avid. This 16-channel automatic mixing controller plugs into a slot on selected Avid digital mixers and patches into the Avid’s mic channel insert points. The Dugan-VN16 uses the Dugan Speech System to detect which mics are being used and makes fast, transparent crossfades. It may be configured with 16 automixing channels or 8 automixing channels and 8 channels of ADAT I/O, and may be linked with up to seven other Dugans to expand the number of microphones in the system.

The Dugan Speech System™ is one of three auto-mixing technologies developed by Dan Dugan, who invented the automatic microphone mixer in the late 1960s. The Dugan Speech System automatically manages any number of live mics in unscripted talking situations. The Dugan Music System™ offers automatic downward expansion to help reduce feedback and noise pick-up in live performances, and Dugan Gain Limiting™ provides a continuous, stepless, number-of-open-microphones master gain adjusting system. All three technologies were designed to provide the best possible mix of live microphones, providing fast, transparent cross-fades without upcutting, choppy sound or shifts in background noise. Dugan products are used in corporate meetings, political events, broadcasting, live theatre and other applications. The products are not mixers in themselves; rather, they are accessories to sound mixing consoles. The “Dugans” patch into the input insert points of a mixing console, giving the board operator all of the features of the board such as EQ and sends, plus Dugan automatic mixing.

Lighting Designer Robert Coleman and Bullet For My Valentine Find the Perfect Match in HARMAN’s Martin Professional M1 Console

MOSCOW, Russia – Moscow’s Arena Club played host to the famous Welsh band, Bullet for My Valentine, on March 6 with HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures and the M1 Console, provided by Moscow’s Euroshow Rental Company. Robert Coleman, the lighting designer for the tour and Moscow show, deployed Martin to bring out the most of his creative ideas.

The set of lighting fixtures included 10 MAC 700 Profiles (six on the middle truss, four on the back truss), 14 MAC 401 RGB Zooms (four on the side truss, five on the middle and five on the back), nine Atomic 3000 DMX strobes, six MAC Viper Profiles and the M1 Professional Lighting Console.

Coleman, who was introduced to the M1 console a few years ago but never previously had the opportunity to use it, worked with Alexey Zhuravlev, Lighting Designer, Euroshow Rental Company, to program the Moscow show.

“I thought the design was good, and I found the layout really easy to pick up. Everything seemed to be where you would expect it,” Coleman stated. “I only had a few hours to program before the show. I like that the desk was ready to go, and I didn’t have to spend ages setting up all my user preferences, window displays, etc. The same with creating effects –
certain other desks have made this process way too complicated and time-consuming. I found the desk perfect for making quick and easy effects.”

Coleman was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to learn how to operate the console and the logical programming. “Everything I asked from Zhuravlev seemed to be possible. I’ve had experiences with other desks, when asking the programmer something, only to be told, ‘I don’t think that’s possible on this desk.’”

The M1 surface has more than enough playbacks and buttons for Coleman. “Up until the Russian shows we had been touring our own desk. I had seen the M1 in a few of the venues as the house desk, but never got the chance to use it,” Coleman said. “Now I am more than happy to use the M1 in the future. I really enjoyed using the desk, and it certainly made for a better show than a couple of the others I could mention.”

Coleman also deployed the MAC Vipers in the rig partly because of the size. “The crew had to work at different grounds, from small to big, and because they were mainly placed on the floor and on the set, I didn’t want a big fixture but I still wanted something bright and powerful. That’s why MAC Viper Profile became the obvious choice.”

SunBriteTV Introduces Groundbreaking New 32” and 46” Signature Series Models

THOUSAND OAKS, California, April 28, 2014 — SunBriteTV, manufacturer of the world’s best-selling outdoor television, today introduced the Signature Series SB-3270HD 32-inch and SB-4760HD 46-inch outdoor TVs. Both models are dramatic upgrades to the industry’s first consumer-centric weatherproof televisions, boasting 50% slimmer profiles and LED displays to make the 3270HD and 4670HD the most affordable high-performance outdoor TVs currently available.

“We’ve taken the best-selling outdoor TV in the world and improved it by leaps and bounds,” said Tom Dixon, VP of Marketing, SunBriteTV. “Our new design features powder-coated aluminum casings that make the new Signature Series models 50% thinner but actually stronger and more durable. By adding newer, brighter LED displays, SunBriteTV will take the outdoor viewing experience to a new level.”

SunBriteTV’s new design employs a new patented cooling system that allows for an impressively thin design while actually improving the unit’s ability to operate in extreme heat (up to 130° F). The new powder-coated aluminum exteriors deliver improved strength and durability and are far lighter than earlier models. The new bright LED panel further improves picture quality in a multitude of outdoor viewing conditions.

“The outdoor living market is expanding rapidly as more consumer technology products become optimized for outdoor use,” said Dixon. “It’s critical to consider not only performance, but also how these products are integrated aesthetically into existing backyards.”

SunBriteTV’s outperform indoor televisions used outdoors on a number of important variables. All models withstand temperatures from -24°F to 122°F and completely resist rain, humidity, salt corrosion, dust, and insects. Insulated electronics and specialized sealing technology reduce the risk of personal injuries associated with using electronic equipment outside.

The new 32- and 46-inch Signature Series models are now available in black, silver and white colors at www.sunbritetv.com for $1,495 and $2,895 MSRP, respectively. They include a two-year warranty, a weatherproof remote and 20-watt built-in speakers.
