Musikverein Chooses Meyer Sound CAL: Bringing Sonic Depth and Speech Clarity to Vienna’s Distinguished Concert Hall

Home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein is described by the New York Times as “a model of acoustic perfection” for classical concert halls around the world. To optimize the speech clarity in this space characterized by its resonant, rich acoustics, the Musikverein has chosen the steerable Meyer Sound CAL™ column array loudspeakers.

“Everybody is very pleased with the intelligibility of the new system,” reports Martin Laumann, audio engineer contracted by the Musikverein. “Voices through CAL have more depth, reach, and clarity in a room where you often can’t understand a colleague talking to you from only five meters away.”

In specifying a loudspeaker for speech reproduction, Laumann reports that the room was faced with layers of acoustical and logistical challenges. First, the system had to cope with a reverberation time of well over two seconds—exquisite for orchestral music, but poor for speech intelligibility. The loudspeakers also had to be completely hidden from view behind a grille, fit inside a narrow space in a less-than-ideal location, throw clear sound nearly 50 meters to back of the second balcony, and present voices with a natural balance and timbre.

“We auditioned and measured systems from different manufacturers, and CAL was clearly the best solution,” says Laumann. “The CAL cabinets are more compact, the sound beam is better controlled, and the STI-PA intelligibility measurements show better values. CAL also fits neatly into the narrow space, so the loudspeakers remain invisible to the audience.”

Two CAL 64 column array loudspeakers are mounted side-by-side: the beam of one is aimed down at a 19-degree angle with a 20 degree vertical beam spread to cover the main floor; the other is aimed on axis with a 15-degree vertical beam spread to cover the two rear balconies. These two CAL loudspeakers are set up for failover redundancy. In addition, the system includes two MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers to cover small seating areas behind the stage on each side of the organ loft.

The CAL system has been used extensively for voice narration in performances such as Tchaikovsky’s Peter and the Wolf, as well as for introductions and commentary by conductors, rehearsals, and educational programs.

Provided and installed by Sommerein, Austria-based ATEC Pro Audio under the leadership of Manfred Prochazka, the complete system also includes an Allen & Heath iDR-8 matrix mixer and processor with remote capability, as well as Sennheiser wireless microphones.

In the Musikverein’s 600-seat Brahms Hall, ATEC also installed a Meyer Sound UltraSeries™ loudspeaker system. To accommodate the hall’s flexible seating and staging, loudspeakers are placed and timed to allow either longitudinal or transverse seating, with main loudspeakers in one configuration serving as delays in the other. The system includes four UPJunior-XP 48 V VariO™ and four UP-4XP 48V loudspeakers, plus eight MM-4 loudspeakers. An Allen & Heath iDR-8 with a PL-10 remote controller provides mixing and processing.

The Golden Hall of the Weiner Musikverein (Vienna Music Association) seats 1,744 with standing room for an additional 300. The room’s ideal reverberation envelope and balanced sound diffusion are attributed to its elongated “shoebox” shape and its richly appointed interior, which presents thousands of varied surface shapes for generating multiple early and late reflections.

RCF USA Invites Consultans and Contractors to Line Array Demonstrations May 20-21 at Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas

(Edison, New Jersey) RCF USA is proud to host the RCF World Tour product demonstration Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20-21 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. This is the only U.S. stop, with RCF providing live sound reinforcement demonstrations of their line array and stadium series loudspeaker products.
“This is a rare opportunity for consultants, contractors, and even prospective customers to be able to see and hear all of the line array solutions offered by RCF and dB Technologies in one place at one time,” notes RCF USA Manager of Installed Sound Ken Voss. “If anyone is looking at the investment of a line array, or at the design of any large sports facility, this is a golden opportunity to explore these solutions.”
Founded in 1949 in Italy, RCF is a renowned manufacturer of transducer products. In recent years, they have become a worldwide leader in line array technology. The storied 80 year history of the iconic Cotton Bowl is a perfect backdrop for the presentation of RCF products, filling the famed 90,000 seat bowl with the sound of RCF.
At the Cotton Bowl event, line array demonstrations will include full flown system configurations, with subwoofers, on the following products:
• TTL55-A – Three-way active line array module with dual 12” low frequency woofers, 10” midrange and three 1.5” neodymium compression drivers. 3500 watt (RMS) tri-amplified achieving 143 dB maximum SPL output.
• TTL33-A – Three-way active line array module with dual 8” low frequency woofers, 8” midrange and three 1” neodymium compression drivers. 1250 watt (RMS) tri-amplified achieving 134 dB maximum SPL

The series will feature three two-way cabinets featuring dual 12” woofers coupled with a 1.5” throat compression driver with 4” voice coil. The cabinets are designed with a 22.5-degree vertical coverage and choice of 40, 60 or 90-degree horizontal coverage. The series is rounded out with a single 18” subwoofer cabinet with same dimensions for array needs. Designed for high output with accurate voice and sound reproduction.
Other products to be demonstrated at the event include:
• TTP5-A – New high powered, two-way 15” point source array engineered to deliver high fidelity output for use both in indoor and outdoor medium and large spaces. The 22.5°x60° waveguide provides tight, accurate coverage. 1600 watt (RMS) bi-amplified achieving 138 dB maximum SPL
• TTL11-A + TTS26-A system – The TTL11-A is an active steerable column array system composed of two modules – one for the mid-high and one for the bass frequencies – which is stacked on top of the TTS26-A dual 18” subwoofer. 8000 total watts in the package achieving 140+ dB maximum SPL.
• P5228 – Providing a representation of the RCF Acustica Series of IP55-rated weatherproof outdoor speaker cabinets, the P5228 is a dual 8” two-way cabinet that can be used individually or arrayed for larger environments, as will be demonstrated here.

HARMAN’s Martin Professional MAC Quantum Wash™ LED Fixture Makes World Debut at Russia’s Arena Moscow Club

MOSCOW, Russia — Russia’s Arena Moscow Club recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Russian Internet—and the first registered domain name—with an extravagant concert event featuring an array of famous musical groups and musicians, such as Lyapis Troubetzkoy, Vasya Oblomov, Smyslovye Galljucinacii, Bravo, and Samsara. The event also marked the first official live performance of HARMAN Martin Professional’s MAC Quantum Wash LED fixtures in the world. Russian rental company Laser-Kinetics provided the lighting system.

The lighting design featured 37 MAC Quantum Wash lights that were placed on the web of trusses to provide the main wash effect with wide, powerful and bright beams, and to create decorative effects throughout the show. Twelve of Martin’s MAC Viper Profiles were also hung on the background and worked in tandem with 20 Martin MAC 700 fixtures that were placed on the top trusses to add flashes of energy to the concert and create bright mid-air effects. Additionally, the lighting designer installed 12 MAC 301 Wash lights on the side trusses above the dance floor for backlight and deployed 16 Atomic 3000 DMX strobe lights.

The Moscow Arena has a quiet ascetic design with no screens, scenery or any construction. Specialists from Laser-Kinetics, together with Lighting Designer Alexander Bel’kov and the production company, Art Koleso, decided to make lighting design the focus for this event. The creative design concept was based on the traditional Internet symbol – the web. Highlighted truss structures were placed in the corresponding geometrical order and a set of Martin lighting fixtures created an additional bright entourage with the new LED moving heads of the MAC Quantum Wash.

“We were in an extreme need of a powerful LED wash fixture,” said Alex Leonov, CTO Laser-Kinetics. “At the same time, we didn’t want to invest in another brand’s equipment. We are very loyal to Martin products as they proved to be reliable and efficient in rental business.”

The MAC Quantum Wash features tight beams, beautiful wash fields, a market-leading color palette, and uniform mixing that combines to accommodate the most demanding applications offering brightness and perfection. By combining an impressive 750-watts of RGBW LED power with Martin’s market leading optical system, the MAC Quantum Wash’s 1:6 zoom is guaranteed to operate with maximum output and ensure superior performance.

“MAC Quantum Wash fully meets our expectations,” stated Leonov. “We have received a powerful LED wash light, the one that we expected. Martin even added an ability to create decorative effects, and in fact, now we have a ‘2-in-1’ fixture. Evidently, it’s a time for a new generation of moving heads and MAC Quantum is a bright representative of this generation.”

“We just used the fixtures for the first time, so we don’t know all their features yet but we are going to experiment! The first impression is definitely positive! Now we can say that the MAC Quantum Wash has a brilliant color palette and ability to create beautiful effects due to the rotation of the lens.”

As a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural, and commercial sectors, Martin lighting and video systems are renowned the world over. Martin also offers a range of advanced lighting controllers and media servers, as well as a complete line of smoke machines as a complement to intelligent lighting. Bose® RoomMatch® System Selected for Wabash City Schools Auditorium

RoomMatch® loudspeaker arrays create a dual-hang sound system that provides even, consistent coverage throughout the 950-seat auditorium

Framingham, Massachusetts, April 30, 2014 – Until recently, the 950-seat auditorium used by Wabash City High School and Middle School (Wabash, Indiana) featured a sound system that had not been updated in 30 years. That has all changed since a new RoomMatch® sound system from Bose® Professional Systems was installed there recently. Now, students, faculty and visitors to the schools can enjoy high-quality sound and increased intelligibility for everything from school band and theatrical performances to graduation and other ceremonies.

In the auditorium, Indiana-based AV systems integrator Circle City Audio installed a RoomMatch system composed of three RM9040 modules, two RM7020 modules and two RMS215 subwoofers, configured in a dual-hang arrangement at the front of the hall. These are powered by three Bose PowerMatch® PM8500N amplifiers, with processing by a pair of Bose ControlSpace® ESP-88 digital signal processors.

The addition of the RoomMatch arrays has taken the school’s performance space to the next level. “It’s our school’s mission to provide our students the best possible opportunities we can, and now we’re doing that in the auditorium, with the installation of the new Bose RoomMatch PA system,” says Will Woodruff, band director and auditorium director of Wabash City Schools. “[The] first time I heard it I was blown away. And now that the rest of [the system is] in, it’s just incredible.”

Andrew Van Veld, of Circle City Audio, designed the sound system and handled the installation for the schools over the course of four days earlier this year. Van Veld used the Bose Modeler® sound system software and fine-tuned it with the Bose patented Auditioner® playback system, to establish exactly the dispersion patterns that the system would need to address. “RoomMatch arrays were the right option in this situation – we needed a dual-hang line array product that let us control patterns vertically and horizontally, so we can put the right coverage in the right areas of the room,” he explains.

“Using Modeler and Auditioner let me get to the point where I was comfortable with not only how the speaker [sounds], but if the speaker [will] cover the room properly, give us good speech intelligibility, and create music support,” Van Veld says. “The system really does all of that.”

The outcome has been all the school hoped for, and more. “The superintendent is very impressed so far, and the crowd has responded very positively to the fact that we can actually understand our announcer now,” notes Woodruff.

Adds Van Veld, “The system is wonderful. It’s a 950-seat auditorium [but] it sounds like a concert hall. We’d be happy to bring you out here and let you experience it.”

Acclaimed Engineer Paul Sandweiss Uses Focusrite’s RedNet 6 MADI-to-Dante Bridge to Connect His System

Founder of Sound Design Corporation interfaces his Yamaha CL5 with the rest of his system via RedNet 6, giving him the perfect portable setup for high-profile broadcast events, including the recent 86th Academy Awards

Los Angeles, CA, April 29, 2014 – Television Broadcast mixer Paul Sandweiss (the Academy Awards, American Music Awards, BET Awards, EMMY Awards, and Kennedy Center Honors, and founder of Sound Design Corporation), has chosen the RedNet 6 MADI-to-Dante™ Bridge to interface his Yamaha CL5 consoles with the rest of his systems on the road and in broadcast mixing situations. So far, Sandweiss has used his system with the RedNet 6 units on the recent 86th Academy Awards (with longtime associate Biff Dawes mixing the music performances on the live broadcast), the BET Awards, the EMMY’s, the American Music Awards, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 50th Anniversary Special, The BET Celebration of Gospel and a recent Conan O’Brien broadcast from the road in Dallas.

Sandweiss states, “I have flight pack systems, and the flight packs house a Yamaha CL5 console that works on the Dante network. To record from the CL5, we basically push the signal through a RedNet 6, which converts Dante to MADI; that feeds my two Fairlight Xynergi Recorders. I wanted something that easily converts Dante to MADI and MADI back to Dante, and that is exactly what the RedNet 6 does.”

We were immediately impressed with the RedNet 6’s ease of setup and use: “It’s so convenient. They have a RedNet controller that talks to the RedNet 6, and it’s very easy to set up. It’s a very easy box to get up and running real quickly for what you need to do. It needs to be flawless in the signal back and forth, and it manages to do that very well. And aside from that, it has that classic cool red look, it’s only one rack unit and it’s priced right. What more can I say?”
