RF Venue Releases RF Explorer® RackPRO™

ASHLAND, MASSACHUSETTS: Boston-based wireless audio manufacturer RF Venue has released the RF Explorer® RackPRO™ a unique hardware/software spectrum analysis platform designed to manage and monitor any size wireless audio system from a USB-connected laptop or directly onboard a wireless equipment rack. The RackPRO is the first easy-to-use, affordable RF spectrum analyzer in a standard 1-RU housing with included RF coordination, monitoring, and management software all available from RF Venue.

“The ability to visualize, monitor and manage RF has never been more critical as the wireless spectrum becomes a more hostile and unpredictable place for wireless mics and IEMs,” says RF Venue CEO Chris Regan. “To date this capability has been limited to expensive test equipment and the expertise of trained RF system coordinators. We are thrilled to finally bring this capability to the broader wireless audio market in a system tailored for live production and installed sound.”

The RackPRO can provide a quick assessment of RF activity in standalone mode via an onboard LCD screen and front panel hardware controls, or connected via USB to a Windows or Mac computer for expanded functionality. With the included Clear Waves software, users can see spectrum activity in their venue, calculate sets of intermodulation distortion-free frequencies, and export it all to PDF report files or to compatible Shure® Wireless Workbench® and Professional Wireless Systems® IAS file formats. Individual transmitter frequencies can also be labeled and monitored to catch dropouts or interference before they ruin a performance.

“Clear Waves strikes the right balance between ease-of-use and powerful functionality for Windows users. We will also soon be releasing a RackPRO compatible native application for Mac OSX,” continues Regan. “For our dealers and customers routinely frustrated by the unpredictable nature of wireless audio systems, the RackPRO will provide greater reliability and long overdue peace of mind.”

The RF Explorer RackPRO is now shipping and is priced at $849 MAP. For ordering information or to join the fast growing community of RF Venue dealers, visit www.RFVenue.com or call 1-800-795-0817.

SYMETRIX LAUNCHES SYMNET COMPOSER SOFTWARE VERSION 2.0

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON: Symetrix announces a new release of its SymNet Composer open architecture design software for Edge and Radius DanteTM network audio DSPs. In addition to a host of time-saving workflow enhancements, Composer 2.0 natively integrates select Dante third-party hardware supporting the discovery, signal routing, and other aspects of AtteroTech unDIO2x2 and unDX2IO and Stewart Audio AV25-2 and NetAV 2×2 devices. Composer 2.0 is the only programming environment needed to build a Dante networked system from start to finish, simplifying and speeding initial design, revisions, and troubleshooting.

Trent Wagner, senior product manager at Symetrix, noted, “I’m very excited to launch this version of SymNet Composer. To my knowledge, Composer 2.0 is the first full integration of third-party Dante devices in our industry. Contractors can now manage an entire Dante-based system from end-to-end (remote wall box I/O, to DSP, to power amps) using only SymNet Composer 2.0 with select products from AtteroTech, Stewart Audio, and Symetrix.”

In addition to third-party Dante device integration, Composer 2.0 offers a number of workflow enhancements. Remote control protocol can be accessed via TCP/IP and TCP/IP string output modules, simplifying integration with control devices and increasing the number of compatible control systems (e.g. projectors). Module input and output names can be automatically propagated to downstream modules, speeding and standardizing the labeling process, and presets can now be created and edited without going off-line. In addition to the 600+ DSP modules already within the Edge and Radius system, a new Transient Suppressor DSP module reduces random transient noise (e.g. pen tapping, silverware clanking) for clearer conference audio. Furthermore, a new “Trace Signal Path Forward” feature now traces through all Dante transmitters and receivers that significantly reduces the time required to understand, follow, and troubleshoot signal flows within large systems.

Added Symetrix Founder and CEO, Dane Butcher, “SymNet Composer 2.0 is yet another milepost in our ongoing mission to provide software and hardware tools that help our integrators achieve the greatest possible levels of technical excellence while at the same time expending the least time and effort.”

SymNet Composer 2.0 is available for free download at www.symetrix.co

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. Rick Camp Brings Earthworks WL40V Capsule on the Road with Jennifer Lopez

Milford, NH – With a career spanning 30 years and a roster that includes Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Burt Bacharach, The Isley Brothers, Baby Face, Anita Baker, and Kelly Clarkson, FOH Engineer Rick Camp has certainly been around the block. And in 2011, Camp added Jennifer Lopez to his impressive roster. Now Camp is taking the Earthworks WL40V wireless microphone capsule on the road with Jennifer as she tours the globe.

Camp first learned about the Earthworks WL40V capsule from a friend, Tim Kidwell, who does sound for Frankie Beverly and Maze. “Tim showed me how well the WL40V rejected sound.” recalls Camp. “During a performance Frankie would always turn around and walk straight toward the drum set, and his stage volume was always incredibly loud. The Earthworks capsule just rejected all of the sound from the drums.”

About a year later, Camp had an opportunity to use the WL40V capsule himself on Jennifer’s Sony DWX Digital Wireless. “I am an endorser of Sony wireless microphones, and in talking with my rep from Sony, he told me how the new Sony DWX series wireless mics were designed to use interchangeable mic capsules,” explains Camp. “He mentioned that one of the interchangeable capsules was the Earthworks WL40V. I told him that I had actually heard one of the Earthworks mic capsules in action, and that I wanted to try it.”

“The thing that impresses me with the WL40V is that the pickup pattern is really tight, which rejects all the stage noise coming in from the rear and sides,” explains Camp. “When a singer turns toward a drum set or guitar amp, it rejects all of that. The rear rejection is just great!”

“I also love the sound of the Earthworks capsule,” says Camp. “It is crystal clear and sounds like a studio mic on stage. The WL40V has a very smooth response and I love that, especially when Jennifer is on a ramp, 50 feet out in front of the PA speakers.”

Camp explains how the WL40V has improved Jennifer’s performance. “The WL40V capsule is incredible and there is nothing that I don’t like about it. It has made a world of difference for me, and especially with Jennifer, because she likes to work in front of the PA speakers for about half of the show, and I have no acoustic feedback problems,” explains Camp. “When she walks down the 50 foot ramp, when she faces the audience, her body blocks the speakers and when she turns around toward the stage, with the rear of the mic facing the speakers, it all works flawlessly. No matter which way she turns, I have no feedback problems when using the WL40V mic capsule. This capsule improved the performance by fifty percent, just by the rejection of all the outside elements such as side fills or wedges.”

Another challenge Camp faced during the performance? “There is a part of Jennifer’s show where she is doing a tango with some of her dancers,” says Camp. “One of the dancers holds Jennifer’s mic up to her, and she says a few words as she is spinning around and twirling. I could never dig out this little vocal, as it was so soft. However, when using the WL40V capsule, I have no trouble picking this up. It sounds just like she was standing still, singing into the microphone.”

Having had such a stellar experience with the WL40V on Jennifer’s tour, Camp is spreading the word. “I have already recommended the Earthworks WL40V capsule to other engineers,” says Camp. “I tell them that the WL40V has incredible rear rejection and a very impressive sound quality. It sounds like a studio mic on stage.”

“I have found Earthworks and its people wonderful to work with. When I needed something, they were right there to help me out,” concluded Camp. “I have been very favorably impressed with the WL40V wireless microphone capsule, so much so, that I am now looking forward to trying out the Earthworks High Definition drum mics and the PianoMic™.”

Veteran FOH Engineer Rick Camp has developed Master Mix Live, a Las Vegas, NV-based school devoted to training people in the art and science of live sound. For more info about Master Mix Live, go to mastermixlive.com.

Digital Nirvana System Ensures Confident 24/7 Monitoring of Live Feeds at Discovery Communications

Fremont, CA – Digital Nirvana, a provider of monitoring, compliance and content repurposing systems for broadcast, cable, and satellite networks, has announced that Discovery Communications selected its Monitor IQ™ broadcast monitoring system. The system will be used to provide 24/7 confidence monitoring for 45 live channels for Discovery North America’s broadcast operations.

“ASI functionality means less hardware for across the North America services and provides greater data metrics with regards to DPI and CALM logging,” said Tim Mazzacua, Director, TOC Operations, Discovery Communications, Inc. “By reducing the total equipment footprint, we can free up valuable rack space. Additionally, the Digital Nirvana system gives us a much better idea of what our customers are actually seeing.”

Arco Groenenberg, director of sales and marketing for Broadcast Products, Digital Nirvana, said Monitor IQ provides unique benefits to large, subscriber-based networks: “Networks run the risk of losing subscribers if there are frequent signal losses. Often the provider doesn’t know there’s a signal loss until a customer reports the problem. Monitor IQ lets operators keep track of their channel feeds and react to any signal loss or impairment before customers call.

“We look forward to a continued successful relationship with Discovery,” he continued, “and ensuring the network’s programming is delivered to its customers at the highest possible quality 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Professional Wireless Systems’ Stellar Frequency Coordination Dances to the Beat at the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards

On-Site Technical Expertise, Support and Equipment Ensures Interference-Free Coverage for Live Telemundo Telecast

MIAMI, MAY 5, 2014 – When the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards kicked off on April 24th at the Bank United Center at the University of Miami, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) was on-site to support Telemundo’s live broadcast of the star studded event. This marks the 16th year that PWS has been providing wireless solutions and equipment for the show.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards, the longest running and most prestigious awards show in the Latin music world, honors the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin Music, as determined by the actual sales, radio airplay, streaming and social data from Billboard’s weekly charts.

In addition to the main stage, PWS provided its wireless services for various indoor and outdoor locations before, during and after the live broadcast, including the red carpet, the press room, mun2 network coverage, the Telemundo Morning Show, Un Nuevo Dia as well as two digital media areas. Due to the extensive equipment requirements needed for the various components of the show, PWS worked with Bill Saltzer of East Shore Sound, an AV and integration company based in Jarrettsville, Maryland, to ensure that all the equipment needs were met.

“This was a large show from an equipment standpoint and James Stoffo, the main RF coordinator, once again did a great job of managing all of the wireless microphones, in-ear monitors and IFBs for the technical production and musical elements of the awards show and its associated broadcasts,” says Jim Van Winkle, General Manager, PWS. “Live broadcasts always present their own unique set of challenges and our team worked very hard to ensure that all wireless operations went off smoothly and without any interruptions.”

This year, PWS was faced with more of a challenge than usual due to the size of the video and lighting walls that ran across the main stage. “Our receiver antenna position was behind the stage, which placed all of the live music artists’ microphones and hosts on the other side of the lighting wall,” Stoffo says. “In addition, the overall frequency count was the largest it’s ever been, with more wireless positions than we have ever had, including two media centers operating inside of the venue. The PWS team ensured that everything came together seamlessly, and we had a flawless show.”

For the pre-show red carpet activities, PWS supplied 10 Shure UHF-Rs and five Telex BTR 800 intercom systems along with six Lectrosonic IFBs. PWS provided an additional 10 channels of Sennheiser wireless (3732-II receivers with 5200-II handhelds and 5212-II belt packs) as well as two Telex BTR 800s and nine Lectrosonics IFB’s for the Telemundo Morning Show, as well as four IFBs, eight Shure UHF-Rs and three Telex BTR 800s for Mun2’s coverage. In addition, the press room was outfitted with 30 listen-only Williams Sound FM Systems receivers and headsets.

For the main show, PWS employed 12 channels of the Shure Axient wireless microphone system along with the Shure PSM1000 personal monitor system. Four channels of Sennheiser wireless (3732-II receivers with 5200-II handhelds) were used for the main talent, including Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin and Andrea Bocelli. Laura Pausini used a Sennheiser SKM2000 Handheld outfitted with a 935 capsule. Nine Telex BTR 800s and 10 Shure UHF-R wireless microphones were also utilized. In addition, Masque Sound’s headphone monitor system was deployed to ensure that all microphones were interference-free before hitting the stage.

PWS provided its GX-4 and GX-8 Series Combiners, as well as the RAD TX-8 Transmitter Combiner. Several PWS DB Series Multicouplers were used for the microphone receivers and intercoms. PWS’ Helical Antennas and Domed Helical Antennas were also onsite, both inside and out throughout the full-day event.

“Our goal is to have a perfect, interference-free show every time and we do whatever it takes to accomplish that,” adds Van Winkle. “By creating customized equipment packages and bringing in our filtered products, RF monitors and antennas, we are able to pull off these large shows. This year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards was another successful event for us.”
