AES Nashville Section Presents Awards at Eleventh Annual Spring Mixer

— Belmont trio takes Golden Mixer trophy —

New York, NY, May 7, 2014 — The Nashville Section of the AES held its eleventh annual “Spring Mixer” on April 10, 2014. First-place-winning team Belmont University took home the coveted “Top Mixer” perpetual trophy that will be proudly displayed until next year – Belmont’s fifth win over the eleven-year history of the event. All area schools with audio recording programs were invited to participate. Participating teams were from The Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville (Darrius Porter, Ryan Van Guilder, and Zach Helsinger), Belmont University (Anthony Dipiazza, Joey Doyscher, and Patrick Anderson), The Blackbird Academy (Jeff Todd, Brandon Schnierer, and Michael Freeman), Middle Tennessee State University (Charlie Garcia, Frank Gerdts, Luke Lasater), Nashville State Technical Community College (Gregory J. Bergeron, Destine Kaine Ellis, and Justin M. Osborne), and the SAE Institute-Nashville (Jeremy Moulder and Dalton VanVolkenburgh). Second place went to School of Audio Engineering Institute-Nashville, and third place was secured by The Blackbird Academy.

Each team was given identical raw original studio tracks recorded in a Nashville studio, identical mixing environments, and eight hours to create a stereo mix and complete the session documentation per guidelines from the AES and The Recording Academy® Producers & Engineers Wing®. Entering the competition, the students were only informed of the judging criteria and what equipment they would be using. The mixing was done over a two-day period in six identical Pro Tools HD mixing rooms in CMT’s audio post rooms in Nashville. The students were informed as to which version of Pro Tools to expect, which plug-ins would be available on those systems, and the studio monitors that would be supplied.

The final mix created by each team used tracks from a recording session of “Takin’ It Slow” by Canadian country artist Bobby Wills. The producer, Michael Pyle, spoke to the students via a video chat before the session and made them aware of the sound he was going for on the finished mixes. Rules prohibited any additional outside materials, re-recording of any new material outside of the given tracks, or any outside assistance.

The competition was judged by a panel of six industry judges: Producer/Recording Engineer Neil Cappellino, Recording Engineer Bob Clark, Mastering Engineer John Mayfield, Producer/Mixing Engineer Steve Marcantonio, Recording/Mixing Engineer Randy Poole and Recording/Mixing Engineer David Schober. The judging was based on aesthetic elements such as the fidelity, imaging, width/depth, dynamic range, mix balance, preparation for mastering and documentation-completion of page 5 of AES/P&E Wing Session Documentation. Held at the W.O Smith Music School, the evening was moderated by AES Nashville Committee Member/Recording Engineer Jill Courtney, and she awarded the winning teams their prizes.

AES Chairman Kerry Kopp stated, “The AES Nashville Section’s Spring Mixer is an event which we always greet with anticipation. This year’s event was one of the best in recent memory, with superlative judges who offered extremely beneficial mix evaluations. I believe each student that participated in this year’s event now has a much clearer vision of what they may experience when they enter the hyper-competitive environment of the technical side of today’s music business. Congratulations to the all of the teams that participated and benefited from this year’s event, with special accolades for the winning team from Belmont University!”

“It was a pleasure to participate in the judging of this event,” said Steve Marcantonio. “I enjoyed hearing the varied approaches to the mix from these eager, young minds, and they were receptive and positive when given creative input.”

Bose® Hosts RoomMatch® Demo Series in Nashville

At the legendary studio space formerly known as RCA Studio A, some of the Southeast’s leading engineers, system integrators, entertainers and more gathered to experience the RoomMatch® system live and in person

Framingham, Massachusetts, May 7, 2014 – Recently in Nashville, Tennessee, Bose® Professional Systems held a three-day series of events demonstrating its RoomMatch® modules. Presented in collaboration with studio designer/system integrator Steve Durr, these educational sessions were held at Ben’s Studio, the historic Music Row studio space formerly known as RCA Studio A and now operated by singer-songwriter and producer Ben Folds. The demonstrations featured in-depth discussions of RoomMatch systems – including product philosophy, design parameters and technical specifications – and attendees were encouraged to move freely throughout the venue to experience the RoomMatch system’s highly specific and precise coverage patterns during live performance and playback of contrasting tracks selected by Durr to highlight the system’s range.

A special highlight of this series was the evening of the second day, which featured a live performance from a group of Nashville-based musicians assembled as The Cunningham Willis Consortium (mixed by Durr) attended by leading engineers, system integrators, entertainers, management, press and more. The group was able to demonstrate the system’s range with a wide variety of musical styles, including rock, R&B, gospel, folk and more, with a number of different singers sharing lead vocals while Durr mixed as front-of-house engineer.

For these demos, the following RoomMatch modules were hung above the stage at Ben’s Studio: two RM7010’s, two RM9010’s, two RM9020’s, two RM12020’s and two RMS218 subs. Six RMU208 modules were used as floor monitors for the band. Five Bose PowerMatch® PM8500N amps provided amplification for the system. Processing was handled by a Bose ControlSpace® ESP-88 engineered sound processor and CC-64 Control Center.

“It is really hard to describe in words how pristine the audio is from a Bose RoomMatch system – you must actually experience it for yourself,” stated Durr. “RoomMatch is the most musical, most enjoyable speaker system that I have worked on, and from my perspective as an engineer and designer, I felt that it was important to let people hear and experience a RoomMatch system for themselves first hand. Our Nashville event clearly let attendees hear what is possible from a PA system if it is designed properly, and Bose totally nailed it with RoomMatch.”

Christie Mirage 4K Projector Screens Trumbull’s ‘UFOTOG’ in 3D 4K at 120 FPS

Filmmaker and Visual Effects legend Douglas Trumbull is partnering with Christie® on May 11 to premiere UFOTOG, a dramatic 10-minute experimental sci-fi story about a lone man attempting to photograph UFOs. Directed by Trumbull and created in 4K 3D at 120 frames per second (fps), the short film will be screened on a Christie® Mirage 4K35, the world’s first and only 4K DLP® resolution projector running at a true 120Hz, at the Seattle Cinerama Theater’s 2nd Annual Sci-Fi Film Festival.

“By using the latest technological advances in a smaller, less expensive space I can create and shoot live action content in a virtual environment at an actual 120Hz at full 4K resolution,” said Douglas Trumbull. “This ensures that the film will have the intended impact of an immersive, action 3D experience that can only be achieved on a Christie Mirage 4K at a true 4K 120Hz playback rate for a special venue or advanced immersive theatrical environment.”

With UFOTOG, Trumbull will demonstrate his ground-breaking MAGI process, which explores a new cinematic language that invites the audience to experience a powerful sense of immersion and impact that is not possible using conventional 24 fps or 3D standards.

“With Trumbull’s vision and process, he is taking the audience experience to an entirely new immersive story-telling level, beyond anything ever seen in the cinema world,” said Larry Paul, senior director, technology and visualization solutions, at Christie. “In fact, the use of the Christie Mirage 4K35 DLP® projector is the first screening of its kind showing in true 120Hz.”

DPA Microphones Fly The Flag For Denmark At Eurovision

As Europe braces itself for the annual spectacle that is Eurovision, DPA is already playing a key part in this musical extravaganza by providing the podium microphones in the official press room.

The venue for this year’s Eurovision Song contest is the B&W Halls in Copenhagen and all of the press conferences are taking place in a separate auditorium that has been specially equipped for this purpose.

Bent Iversen, Key Account Manager for leading Scandinavian PA company DPA Soundco (which, despite the similar name, is not affiliated with DPA Microphones) is the main sound technician for the press room. He says: “We have installed 20 d:screet™ Supercardioid Miniature Podium Microphones, which were specified by broadcast rental company Best Broadcast Hire (BBH). These are positioned on the press table where they are mounted on K&M Table Bases.

Iversen adds that DPA Microphone’s new podium microphones are ideally suited for the job and for the room acoustics.

“Most of the people taking part in the press panels are musicians and they have a tendency to be quite loud,” he explains. “We needed a microphone that could cope with a loud monitor system and with sudden changes in volume. We also wanted microphones that could handle a situation where singers decide to sing as well as speak, which does sometimes happen with Eurovision press conference.”

Introduced last year, DPA’s new podium microphones give AV installers and conference organisers the clear, transparent and precise sound for which the company is famous.

“The main Eurovision show won’t be using any instrument microphones because 99% of what the audience hears is playback,” he explains. “The hand held artist mics are specified by Eurovision as part of a deal they have with another manufacturer but if it was my choice I’d be using the new DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones on a Wisycom wireless system.”

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Danish Radio, which is hosting the event, already owns more than 200 wireless Wisycom systems, so it would have been the natural choice if contractual circumstances hadn’t made this impossible.

Christie Powers World Premiere of ‘X-Men’ at the Jacob Javits Convention Center

The West Ocean String Quartet Choose DPA Microphones

The West Ocean String Quartet, winner of The Irish Times/The Ticket’s Trad CD of the Year 2013 for their album An Indigo Sky, are now using DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to capture their unique sound.

Sounds And Silence Coexist Peacefully In New York Public Library, Made Possible By Holosonics’ Audio Spotlight Technology

Audio Spotlight Directional Speakers In Action At NYPL Recognizing the interests of neighborhood youth and their affinity for embracing future technologies, Rice+Lipka Associates sought out to provide the New York Public Library (NYPL) with an exciting, modern makeover of its Hamilton Grange Teen Center situated in the heart of New York City. By focusing on integrating fresh technologies to provide unique social experiences, Rice+Lipka were able to transform the aging facility into an open-concept hangout space full of interest, engagement, and community.

As the preservation of quiet is utterly synonymous with public library space, NYPL was faced with the challenge of catering to the increasingly multimedia-centric senses of today’s youth, without adding noise or distraction to the quiet library. Their solution was the unique Audio Spotlight directional speaker systems by Holosonics. A speaker technology unlike any other, the Audio Spotlight provides a narrow sound beam of coverage, with audio levels dropping over 90% only a single step away. Harnessing such directivity, the library could create a tight, well defined listening area, while maintaining quiet for all others outside this zone.
