Suntec Singapore uses HARMAN’s Martin Professional LED Technology to Enhance Customizable Exhibition space

SINGAPORE — As Singapore’s leading venue for meetings, trade shows, lectures and other events, Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre is an award-winning multilevel space that is home to the world’s largest HD video wall. Located in the central business district of Singapore, the convention center recently underwent a massive renovation that included an advanced LED lighting solution for the center’s fourth level. Suntec Singapore originally had a different plan in mind, however, when Bo Steiber Lighting Design introduced Suntec Singapore to HARMAN’s Martin Professional VC-Dot 1, the project took a different, positive turn.

Suntec Singapore takes pride in being an industry pioneer by using cutting-edge technology to improve business and minimize its carbon footprint for both Suntec Singapore and its clients. For the level 4 modernization, Suntec Singapore sought to change the way attendees interacted with the environment and revolutionize their perception of events and venues. In the downtown modern core of Singapore, space is extremely valuable. “To us, there was one particularly relevant question to bear in mind: How can we design a space flexible enough to host an exhibition today, a wedding banquet tomorrow and a conference the next day,” explained, Arun Madhok, CEO, Suntec Singapore.

The innovative renovation incorporated the venue’s ceiling into the design to allow for Suntec Singapore to quickly alter an event space or set the mood of an event. The new design is centrally programmed and controlled, eliminating the need for staff to climb the ceiling in order to make adjustments. As a result, Suntec Singapore is now a more flexible, marketable and efficient event space.

As part of the innovative ceiling design, Martin’s LED VC-Dot 1’s allows Suntec Singapore to offer its clients unprecedented flexibility for a single space as customers can now differentiate themselves by adding logos, messaging and graphics to their event.

Summarizing the importance of the new design, Madhok stated, “Our new system costs less to operate than our previous system. We save costs on power and cooling as well as the drastic decrease in breakdowns and necessary repairs. The installation is one of our key selling points and has definitely strengthened our brand as a venue. Saying that, we have to expect our competitors to catch up, and therefore we have to constantly renew ourselves and keep up to speed with new products and possibilities. For this, a close working relationship with Martin Professional Asia & Pacific is crucial.”

As a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural, and commercial sectors, Martin lighting and video systems are renowned the world over. Martin also offers a range of advanced lighting controllers and media servers, as well as a complete line of smoke machines as a complement to intelligent lighting. Martin operates the industry’s most complete and capable distributor network with local partners in nearly 100 countries. Founded in 1987 and based in Aarhus, Denmark, Martin is the lighting division of global infotainment and audio company HARMAN International Industries. French Radio Station Europe 1 Upgrades Audio with HARMAN’s Studer OnAir 3000 Digital Consoles

PARIS, France—Leading French radio station Europe 1 has recently outfitted its studios with a pair of HARMAN Studer OnAir 3000 digital consoles. The consoles were sold through Audiopole, Studer’s French distributor.

In existence since 1955, Europe 1 is owned and operated by Lagardère Active, a subsidiary of the Lagardère Group. As part of a redesign to its studios, Europe 1 required an upgrade to its audio system. After an extensive review of console options, the network opted for the OnAir 3000 consoles, installing the first one at the end of December 2013 and the second in April. The consoles are Modulo types, featuring rack-mountable mainframes that house the power supplies and host processing. The consoles are mounted into the studio desks, integrated with the attractive décor of the rooms.

“We already have had good experiences with an OnAir 3000 a couple of years ago, the console is reliable, modular, flexible and robust,” said Michaël Allouche, Europe 1’s head of engineering. “So it was quite natural to stay with the same model.”

The OnAir 3000 design is based on a completely modular desk and a new DSP engine. The fader module includes six fader strips, and up to eight fader modules may be fitted, giving a maximum console size of 48 faders. Layout options range from a highly comprehensive engineer-operated continuity console to a single fader panel for DJ and newsroom use or even a PC-operated system with no physical desk controls. The console has three main stereo mix buses plus an audition facility, four stereo aux. buses, 16 mix-minus sends, configurable as AUXes and three independent studio monitoring circuits and offers full dynamics, EQ and input/output routing in each channel.

Since the OnAir 3000 consoles have been installed, Europe 1 is very pleased with the results.

“The console is very easy to use and the users are happy to get extensive talk-back capabilities on the console from the control room to the headphones in the studio and to external phone lines and codec as well,” said Michaël Allouche. “Using the snapshots is also very useful, there are many different users and they have all their own configuration.”

Award-Winning Producer Steve Pageot Records and Teaches with HARMAN’s AKG Microphones and Headphones

NEW YORK, New York – Legendary producer Steve Pageot picked up his first HARMAN’s AKG recording microphone at the age of 19, from where he ambitiously combined his engineering skills with a passion for music, leading to an esteemed career in music production. Inspired by electronic engineering magazines, he taught himself how to mix and record songs three years later. Today, he uses several AKG microphones and headphones that have seen him through countless studio sessions.

Having worked on multiple high-profile albums with Krayzie Bone, Aretha Franklin, and even a movie with Nick Cannon, Pageot’s credits are as his audio engineering skills. To perform consistently at a top level, he exclusively uses AKG microphones for all of his recordings. His microphone inventory includes AKG C1000S, P820 and C414 XLII microphones, and he owns three pairs of AKG K240 MKII headphones at his home studio.

“I want to use the best out there, and AKG is the best,” said Pageot. “The C1000S was the very first AKG microphone that I owned, and it still works! It is a very professional microphone that is preferred by artists like Aretha Franklin, and can be used on many different aspects of recording for many years.”

“Later on, since adding the P820 microphone to my inventory, I’ve been amazed at the sound that it produces,” Pageot continued. “Artists love this microphone, because the harder they hit it, the better it sounds. You can really hear the harmonics, as an increase in power adds more color to the sound without any distortion. I personally like to record a lot of my flute tracks on this microphone.”

Pageot also enjoys the airy qualities of the AKG C414 XLII microphone. “It’s nice to be able to change the sound with the bass cut filters, which alter the color of the sound,” Pageot added. “It is an excellent microphone for enhancing those midrange notes.”

With regards to the K240 MKII headphones, Pageot is extremely pleased with how natural the sound output is and how comfortable the design sits on his ears. “They’re amazing, and I love how transparent they sound, reproducing the recordings perfectly,” he said. “You can wear them for many hours without ear fatigue, and that’s the reason why the vocalists and I have been using them for three years in my home studio.”

Currently, Pageot is feverishly working on multiple projects, including Krayzie Bone’s final album, MTV shows and the initial stages of the latest album by the Jacksons. However, his most admirable feat could be his one-on-one music production classes, where he teaches audio students how to produce records with AKG microphones.

“I teach students that what you use in the studio dictates how your music is going to sound,” Pageot said. “I swear by AKG microphones, because they allow vocals to cut through the music, regardless of how loud it is. I don’t need to add a lot of EQ to make the vocals sound good, because these microphones reproduce the vocals exactly how it sounds in the studio. That is why I will never record without AKG microphones.”

DPA helps Joel Compass Perfect His Microphone Technique

Emerging UK artist Joel Compass has become the latest in a long line of singers to join the DPA Microphones’ fan club.

Compass, a 21 year old from South London who is rapidly making a name for himself as an up and coming R&B star, was switched on to DPA’s award-winning d:facto™ Vocal Microphone by his tour manager Mark Portlock and his engineer Liam Halpin.

“DPA microphones are renowned for their audio quality and very low noise floor, so I initially considered the d:facto Vocal Microphone for another artist I am working with who has a particularly quiet voice,” Portlock says. “However, once Liam and I demo-ed it we realised it would also work really well for Joel’s voice, which has a great dynamic range. We introduced him to the microphone and he absolutely loved it. He is now using d:facto for all his live vocal performances.”

Liam Halpin adds that DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone has made his life as an engineer much easier because he can use it with any professional wireless microphone system.

“DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network supplied us with an adapter that gives us seamless integration with all of the professional wireless systems we usually encounter,” Halpin says. “I am a big fan of Shure’s wireless system but that doesn’t preclude me from using other brands of microphone. There is a correct microphone for every situation and in Joel’s case, when it comes to live vocals, it’s the DPA d:facto. With this microphone all I need is an adapter, a capsule and a grill and I can walk into any venue and use any wireless system – I don’t have to take in my own. That saves us having to rent in a wireless system and allows us to use the right microphone for the artist and the performance space.”

Joel Compass has been making waves in the UK after getting an early buzz from media outlets such as MTV and Digital Spy. As well as performing his own material, Compass also writes for other artists and is making a name for himself as a producer – indeed his ballad, Run, was written with Rihanna in mind. His latest single Forgive Me is currently climbing the UK Top 50 and he has been making high profile appearances at the MTV Brand New awards, at London’s Red Bull Studios and live support shows with Rudimental and US star J Cole. He is also working on projects with established artists and his own debut album Science. A busy summer including live shows at Glastonbury and Wireless and secret garden festivals awaits.

Mark Portlock and Liam Halpin believe that introducing Compass to the d:facto has had a number of hidden benefits, not least helping him redefine his microphone technique.

“DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone seems to work best when artists use In Ear Monitors, because that’s when they can really hear the difference it makes to their voice,” Halpin says. “With Joel, we started out using wedges but this was a real pain because he would sing right off the mic, often with his hands covering parts of the grill. Eventually, when we switched to d:facto, we persuaded him to move to IEMs, which he now has in both ear. The change this made to his mic technique was dramatic. Suddenly he could hear his own voice properly and he got right on the microphone because he was enjoying the improved sound so much. It’s made a huge difference to his performance and to the consistency of his sound – in fact I would go so far as to say that this microphone has done more than anything else to get his live performance to where it is now.”

DPA’s d;facto Vocal Microphone now features on the equipment rider for every gig that Joel Compass does and as a result Portlock and Halpin’s favoured rental company, Encore, has invested in its own stock. The microphone is also proving popular with the studio and broadcast engineers the team have encountered during the filming of some of Joel Compass’ gigs.

“It’s really funny how their faces light up when you tell them your artist is using a DPA microphone,” Halpin laughs. “Studio and broadcast engineers are usually pretty disdainful about live mics but with this one they are more than happy. They know all about the audio quality of DPA so the d:facto gives us credibility.”

Portlock adds that the d:facto Vocal Microphone also gives Joel Compass credibility, especially among other artists who recognise that it is a significant investment. He gives DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network much of the credit for making it possible to move Compass onto a d:facto – and for supporting the team while they made the switch.

“The d:facto is not cheap and there is no way we would have committed a developing artist to such an expensive microphone if we hadn’t had fantastic distributor support,” he says. “The fact that Sound Network was able to lend us the d:facto Vocal Microphone in various forms so that we could try them all out – with cable bodies, adapters, different coloured grills etc – made a huge amount of difference. It gave us the confidence to go with the microphone and it also inspired our rental company to buy stock of its own so we now have access to mics that we can rent through them.”
