A Full EDM Immersion: Meyer Sound LYON and 1100-LFC Power Germany’s MAYDAY Festival

MAYDAY, a 20-year-old electronic dance music (EDM) tradition in Germany received a sonic power boost this year with a brand-new Meyer Sound LYON™ linear sound reinforcement system. The 2014 “Full Senses” edition drew 21,000 to the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, with headline DJs Fedde Le Grand, Moguai, and Sander van Doorn playing in the main arena through an immersive surround sound configuration.

“The sound was clean, clear, crisp, and had loads of headroom,” reports Bernd Görgen, co-managing director for Wiesbaden-based schokopro, which has supplied technical production, including sound, light, video, and kinetics for the third year. “We received very good feedback from the promoter during soundcheck, and the performance throughout the night proved us right in our decision to use LYON.”

The main system comprised arrays of eight-each LYON linear line array loudspeakers in each corner of the arena, bolstered by side arrays of six-each MICA® line array loudspeakers. Low-end reinforcement was supplied by an array of 24 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements, and auxiliary and fill systems comprised two hangs of ten-each M’elodie® line array loudspeakers for front entry, five MICA loudspeakers for near fill, and 12 UPA-1P loudspeakers for side tiers. Drive and optimization were supplied by a Galileo® Callisto™ loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 616 AES and six Galileo Callisto 616 array processors and two Galileo 616 processors. Four JM-1P arrayable loudspeakers and four 600-HP subwoofers provided DJ monitoring.

The LYON system was recommended for MAYDAY by Jörg Rapp, head of sound for schokopro, based on his recent experience using another member of the LEO™ Family, the larger LEO linear large-scale sound reinforcement system. Audio engineers Dirk Maron and Dennis Siebert coordinated system design for schokopro and worked as system technicians on site.

“We had the pleasure of working with a crew that could get the best out of a sound system,” says Wulf Issinger, co-managing director for schokopro. “With the effortless power and even coverage of the LYON arrays and the tremendous performance of the 1100-LFCs, the system provided an amazing experience for the crowd—from the front of the stage to the very back of the venue.”

Denmark’s Victory Adds Both Meyer Sound LEO and LYON to Rental Inventory

Denmark-based Victory Tour Production has updated its rental inventory with two systems from Meyer Sound’s newly expanded LEO™ Family of products: the LEO linear large-scale sound reinforcement system, as well as its more compact and flexible sibling, the LYON™ linear sound reinforcement system.

“LEO is already being requested by major tours,” says Frank Grønbæk, project manager for Victory and head of the Copenhagen office. “Its power and long throw opens us to not only the largest stadium and festival shows in Denmark, but also to a wider market elsewhere in northern Europe. And LYON’s size and weight is ideally suited to most shows in the relatively small Danish market.”

The pivotal point in Victory’s purchase decision was a convincing LYON demo in Amsterdam. “The coverage and power were very impressive,” recalls Grønbæk. “I went back 65 meters, up in the balcony, and the sound was still right there, in my face. Then when I walked around the side and came out of the coverage, it just dropped off, like pulling down a console fader. That was amazing. Even all the way off to one side, way in the back, I could still hear a solid left-right stereo image.”

Victory’s LEO family purchase comprises 24 LEO-M line array loudspeakers, 20 LYON-M main line array loudspeakers, eight LYON-W wide-coverage line array loudspeakers, and 28 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements. Also purchased were eight JM-1P arrayable loudspeakers, six UPA-1P and two UPQ-1P loudspeakers, a Compass® RMS remote monitoring system featuring six RMServers for real-time loudspeaker feedback, and a Galileo® Callisto™ loudspeaker management system featuring four Galileo Callisto 616 and two Galileo Callisto 616 AES array processors and two Galileo 408 processors.

The first outing for Victory’s new LEO and LYON systems was a large-scale Danish television broadcast of the TV 2 music show “Top Charlie,” taped at the 50,000-capacity Parken soccer stadium.

The system configuration was anchored by left and right main arrays of 12 LEO-M loudspeakers each, with two LYON-W loudspeakers each for downfill. Two end-fire directional arrays of nine 1100-LFC loudspeakers each provided low end, with two UPQ-1P and six UPA-1P loudspeakers used for front and corner fill, respectively. Four delay arrays utilized a total of 18 LYON-M and two LYON-W loudspeakers. System drive and optimization were supplied by a Galileo Callisto loudspeaker management system with one Galileo Callisto AES 616 and six Galileo Callisto 616 array processors. Theis Romme of Victory was system tech for the event.

“The client requested delays because of the particular show set-up,” explains Grønbæk. “But we did some tests before sound check, and found we could bring the levels up to the point where, with a higher hang, we could have covered the entire stadium without using any delays. In the future, that will certainly save our clients time and money.”

Victory Tour Production is one of Scandinavia’s leading providers of sound, light, staging, and technical event production services. The company has offices in Aarhus and Copenhagen.

H-P Products Vroom® Garage Vac Conveniently Tackles Car and Garage Messes

A valuable add-on product for garage door installers and other technology integration specialists, the Vroom Garage Vac comes in flush-mount and surface mount models and installs in 10 minutes or less.

Louisville, OH – May 14, 2014 – H-P Products, a leading manufacturer of central vacuums and custom tubing-related products, is proud to announce the launch of its new Vroom® Garage Vac, the perfect accessory for any modern garage, workshop or condo. Needing only 2.5 square feet of wall space, the Vroom Garage Vac uses a 40-foot expandable hose to remove tough-to-reach dirt and debris from nooks and crannies without requiring users to lug a bulky shop vac or awkward handheld vacuum everywhere they go.

The Vroom Garage Vac comes in two models; a flush-mount model that can be recess mounted inside a 2×4 stud wall for low profile hard wire installations, or a surface mount version that can be installed anywhere. Both models come with five attachment tools to tackle any cleaning job, including: a telescoping wand and floor tool, a two-piece upholstery tool with horsehair, a dashboard brush, and a flexible crevice tool, all of which are integrated  into the tool caddy or a convenient wall mount.

Putting traditional “shop-vacs” to shame, the Vroom® Garage Vac is equipped with a 12-amp motor for maximum suction and performance, and it comes with an industry-best six year warranty. The easily-replaceable five-layer, one-gallon microfiber filtration bag ensures no dust, debris, or allergens are exhausted, significantly improving the air quality where the Garage Vac is used.

“It’s no secret garages and basements tend to be some of the messiest areas in the house with some of the poorest air quality,” said Amy Wesely, H-P Products Marketing Manager. “The Vroom Garage Vac was designed top to bottom for the demands of garages and workshops and it is the best offense against sawdust, car dirt, sand, and all the other debris that invade and accumulate. Plus, it’s great as a low-profile central vacuum system for condos or smaller homes.”

According to the 11th Annual State of the Builder Market Study done jointly by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB), 18 percent of all new homes included central vacuum. That is a 64 percent increase since 2007, making it the second-fastest growing technology product category installed in new homes behind only home theater. It is also one of the most profitable categories for installers, frequently earning 50-point margins.

The Garage Vac presents easy upsell opportunities when working with new build projects and clients getting new garage door installations. The Garage Vac’s size and weight (only nine pounds) make it a great buy for workspaces, small businesses, and condos that would benefit from a convenient, space-saving wall-mounted vacuum system.

Wesely continued, “From an installers perspective, there’s never been a better time to sell central vacuum systems. Demand is high, competition is low and there are innovative products like the Garage Vac that are ideal for a multitude of difference customers and projects. ”

‘Anchorman’ DP Thomas Ackerman, ASC, Impressed with Zylight F8 LED Fresnel

LOS ANGELES – When he’s not the director of photography for commercials or major motion pictures like Beetlejuice or Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Thomas Ackerman, ASC, teaches cinematography at the School of Filmmaking at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C. When his lectures inevitably turn to lighting, he has a surprising setup of choice.

“Ideally, my ideal lighting scheme is nothing,” he admitted. “When the existing light is sweet, why re-invent the wheel? Many of my colleagues would probably say the same thing. Of course, we would also agree that this almost never happens. Over the years, I’ve shot some huge sets with a power draw to match. But we can always dream.”

Because the lion’s share of his work is not done in natural light, Ackerman continues to explore new lighting options to create images that support the story or script. “When I’m working, I’m sort of an illustrator telling a story. There’s always a target in mind,” he said. “Clearly lighting technology and the choices of lighting systems have grown exponentially since I started doing this. It’s crazy. Now we can choose equipment with almost surgical precision.”

According to Ackerman, cinematographers render images based on contrast as well as the color and volume of light, but some shoots are more artistically challenging than others. New DPs, for example, sometimes have difficulty with night scenes. “They get hung up on naturalism, where is the light supposed to be coming from?” he explained. “Light should be motivated, but you don’t have to be a slave to reality. At night, you have the ability to create a world of your own choosing.”

With today’s advanced camera technologies, Ackerman is not concerned with whether or not he can capture a nighttime image; instead, the challenge is in balancing the lighting. He suggested that high quality LED instruments like the Zylight F8 LED Fresnel, which is portable but delivers close to the output of a traditional 1000-watt Fresnel, can be valuable on night sets. “LEDs as high output, low-power tools can splash light virtually at the last minute on a night exposure that could be tremendously helpful,” he offered.

While his toolkit continues to grow and now includes LED lights, Ackerman is not ready to abandon his more traditional lighting options. “There’s a lot of mediocre LED equipment,” he said, “and claims are often ill-founded with significant limitations.”

One LED that has not disappointed, however, is the Zylight F8, which Ackerman and his students used during the Spring 2014 semester. He said it has an extremely fine build quality and a thoughtful design, which includes the ability to collapse the entire

Students at the School of Filmmaking at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts used the Zylight F8 during the Spring 2014 semester.

instrument, including its eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens, for easy transport. He also said the option to power the F8 using a standard 14.4V camera battery is a significant asset for location and documentary-style shoots.

As far as the quality of the output, the F8 delivered “an amazing amount of punch with miniscule power draw,” he said. “It has a very nice, creamy smooth spread of light, but when you want to spot it in, it concentrates and accordingly picks up. This lamp is officially added to my list. It’s a lot of quality in a very small package.”

Available in daylight (5600K) or tungsten (3200K) versions, the F8 has a high CRI (color rendering index) and Its LED engine features quantum dot technology to provide a more refined and balanced natural light output, which is tuned to work with today’s digital camera systems. The fully dimmable F8 maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping and offers an adjustable beam spread (16-70 degrees), with a patented focusing system for spot and flood operations.

RTW Exhibits Masterclass PlugIns, LQL Software and TouchMonitor Family of Meters at BroadcastAsia 2014

Broad Range of Tools Give More Customers Access to Renowned Company Products

MARINA BAY SANDS, SINGAPORE, MAY 14, 2014 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to exhibit its new RTW Loudness Tools from the new Masterclass PlugIns range of software, the LQL Loudness Quality Logger software and its TM3, TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitor audio meters at this year’s BroadcastAsia Show (Booth 5E6-01).

Masterclass PlugIns
The new Masterclass PlugIns software provides RTW’s renowned metering tools as standard-format plug-ins for Windows and Mac OS platforms, allowing a larger number of RTW customers to access the tools. The RTW Loudness Tools are the first of the company’s products available as part of the new software.

The RTW Masterclass PlugIns Loudness Tools visually depicts audio with all relevant level and loudness values as specified by international standards. Conforming to the EBU R128 loudness standard, as well as ITU-R BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85, ARIB, OP-59, AGCOM, CalmAct and custom as well as SPL mode, it is a handy tool for quality control, offering the precision and ease of use required to ensure compliance with custom specifications. Operation of the plug-in is highly intuitive, so that even users without a great deal of experience in monitoring loudness can use it effectively. The plug-in includes RTW’s Peak Program Meter, TruePeak, and Spot Correlator instruments and also offers all common loudness displays plus MagicLRA mode or SPL view.

The user interface of each plug-in is based on the award-winning RTW TouchMonitor TM7 and TM9 units, and offers the same degree of functionality and clarity as the hardware models. The instruments provide graphical/numerical, as well as bargraph views, and can be freely rearranged and scaled. Various function parameters, such as integration time, operational range and tolerance, along with a number of viewing options for metering data and scales, offer extra flexibility. The plug-in window dimensions can be set to the native resolution of RTW TouchMonitor display screens, including 480×272, 800×480, 1024×800 (landscape view) or 272×480, 480×800, 800×1024 (portrait view). Users can store all setups and layouts as presets in their DAWs.

The RTW Masterclass PlugIns Loudness Tools require Windows 7/8 (32-bit or 64-bit) or Mac OS 10.6 or higher. RTW has first made them available in the VST 2.4 format for Windows systems and the RTAS format for Mac OS. VST, RTAS and native AAX64 support on the two platforms will follow.

LQL Quality Logger Software
The LQL is a natural extension of RTW’s range of innovative software options for the 7- and 9-inch line of TouchMonitor audio meters, as it was developed for logging, true-peak data analysis and reporting. It is compatible with the TM7, TMR7 and TM9 TouchMonitor line of products running with the Logging Data Server license (SW20014).

Once activated, LQL enables measured Loudness and TruePeak data to be derived directly via an IP connection from a capable TouchMonitor audio meter, as well as from external storage media such as a USB stick. The software also includes dual limit weighting, status information, marker and various other reporting features. The new PC software is free of charge to users; however the SW20014 Logging Data Server license is required to enable a TM7, TMR7 or TM9 series meter to be compatible with data export and additional display functions.

TM3, TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors
Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 TouchMonitor has a budget-friendly base price, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. It includes a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel and summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. It offers comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85,ARIB, OP-59, AGCOM, CalmAct and custom as well as SPL mode. As with all TouchMonitor products, it features the Magic LRA instrument, designed by RTW for intuitive visualization of the loudness range and integrated-loudness parameters.

The TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors, which include the innovative Magic LRA instrument, feature a seven- and nine-inch touch-sensitive display, respectively, and provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. Both support displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. The system visualizes up to 16 analog and/or digital sources at the same time.

The TM9 is also capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels when the 3G-SDI option is implemented. Along with RTW’s entire TouchMonitor range, the TM7 and TM9 were created to help adhere to all major industry loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85, ARIB, OP-59, AGCOM, CalmAct and custom as well as SPL mode.

About RTW
RTW, based in Cologne (Germany), has nearly 50 years of experience in designing, producing, and marketing advanced recording-studio systems. The company focuses its business on professional audio signal metering tools that are in use in the leading recording studios as well as by radio and TV broadcasters worldwide.
