HARMAN’s Crown Introduces Its DCi Network Display Amplifiers With Front Panel Display and AVB Connectivity

ELKHART, Indiana — HARMAN’s Crown Audio today announced it is expanding its DriveCore Install (DCi) Series amplifier range with the introduction of its DCi Network Display 8|600ND and 4|1250ND power amplifiers, featuring front-panel status displays and AVB (Audio Video Bridging) connectivity. The new eight- and four-channel DCi Network Display amplifiers will be the first professional audio amplifier to be certified by the AVnu Alliance. DCi Network Display amplifiers will deliver reliable audio performance and networked operation in AVB-based audio/video systems.

“Since their recent introduction our Crown DCi Series amplifiers have set a new standard for installed sound, and our new DCI Network Display amplifiers build upon this industry-leading performance by offering certifiable compatibility with AVB-based installations, along with easy setup and operation and unshakable reliability. Combining DriveCore technology with AVB represents another first from Crown as we continue to lead the way for professional amplifier innovation for the most demanding large-scale environments,” said Daniel Saenz, Business Segement Manager, Crown Audio.

Both DCi Network Display amplifiers feature a front-panel display and LED indicators that provide at-a-glance indication of key parameters. A large multifunction knob and push buttons enable instant access to control functions. The amplifiers are compatible with HARMAN’s HiQnet Audio Architect™ system setup and control software and utilize TCP/IP-based protocol in HiQnet for network monitoring and control.

The eight-channel DCi 8|600ND delivers 600W into 8 ohms (300, 600 and 300W into 16, 4 and 2 ohms) and the four-channel DCi 4|1250ND provides 1250W into 8, 4 or 2 ohms (625W into 16 ohms). Both amplifiers offer direct drive “constant voltage” capabilities for 70Vrms and 100Vrms amplification without the need for a step-up transformer, yielding higher audio quality in distributed audio applications with power outputs of 1250W and 600W respectively.

Like all Crown DCi Series amplifiers, the DCi 8|600ND and DCi 4|1250ND utilize HARMAN’s proprietary DriveCore amplifier IC chip for powerful, highly efficient operation from a compact form factor measuring just 2 RU high. The DriveCore chip combines the amplifier driver stage into the power output stage along with additional audio-signal functions, yet is about the size of a postage stamp. The DriveCore-based Class D, next-generation PWM design dramatically reduces size and power consumption and yields much more energy-efficient operation.

Both amplifiers provide a host of networking and control features to ensure reliable operation, including continuous load monitoring, comprehensive error reporting, pilot tone monitoring and programmable general purpose input/output (GPIO) ports. The DCi 8|600ND and DCi 4|1250ND offer extensive DSP capabilities such as LevelMAX™ limiters for the inputs and outputs, with thermal limiting, input and output delay, input and output EQ, built-in crossovers and a built-in signal generator.

The amplifiers incorporate an exclusive Power Factor Corrected (PFC) universal power supply that is designed to deliver maximum power in any country and their universal AC input accepts voltages from 100 – 240 VAC, 50/60Hz (+/- 10%). A newly-designed cooling system focuses the airflow on where it’s needed most, yielding maximum efficiency even under demanding operational conditions.

Crown DCi Series amplifiers are built for the most demanding conditions of continuous professional use and carry a 3-year, no-fault fully transferrable warranty.

d3 Technologies and Mediatec Solutions Sweden Partner on Eurovision Song Contest 2014

The 4U v2.5 media server from d3 Technologies made its Eurovision Song Contest debut at the 2014 competition just concluded in Copenhagen. Approximately 180 million viewers in 45 countries tuned in to the show, which delivered a strong, masculine look without sacrificing any of the gold, glitter and glamour the ESC is known for.

Named the Official Event Supplier for the ESC 2014, AV rental house Mediatec Solutions Sweden partnered with d3 Technologies to provide a powerful media server solution for all the LED and projection content at the B&W Hallerne venue, a former shipyard.

The media-rich show featured a diamond-shaped stage featuring LED strips with individual pixel control, a huge wall of LED light cubes (with 70 glass display surfaces projected by worlds largest Barco HDQ2k40) configured like the prow of a ship, an enormous 110×12-metre (1170 sqm) LED screen that acted as a backdrop, and 169m2 of the Mediatec tecViz BS10 Interactive LED floor.

“You give the content creators a totally new point of view in show creation when they can use a real interactive touch LED floor,” says Niclas Ljung, Manager Technology of Mediatec.

Selected for its real-time 3D pre-visualization, advanced mapping features, its ability to handle a limitless amount of layers on the time-line and to sequence directly to the beat of a song, the d3 4U media server delivered an efficient and rock solid performance for the 37 participating artists. Niclas Ljung of Mediatec, and David Bajt, an external video consultant and d3 specialist, worked together on the d3 system design, with David setting up the d3 project based on construction drawings, generating templates for the content designers and looking after the workflow.

The d3 system comprised a master and four slaves, plus four understudies to guarantee redundancy; the big system handled content over a network delivering distinctive graphical and video elements for each artist in the spotlight. Searing flames and undulating stylized wings played across all surfaces during the winning performance of “Rise Like a Phoenix” by Austrian contestant Conchita Wurst.

“The d3 4U didn’t miss a beat,” says Ljung. “The d3 media server proved itself time after time on a huge and complex production.”

Head operator Pontus “Bullen” Lagerbielke and assistant operator Luke Collins were responsible for programming the show, and Rowan Pitts and Morgan Brown were the d3 system technicians on site.

Marcus Anderson Creates Sounds For All Settings with HARMAN’s AKG Microphones

LONDON, United Kingdom – Although he has yet to reach the age of 30, Marcus Anderson is already a seasoned musician and one of the most accomplished saxophonists in the world. The multi-talented artist has been playing saxophone with Prince’s band, the New Power Generation, for almost two years. Recently, Anderson also released his fifth solo album, Style Meets Substance, featuring Anderson on a range of instruments and which includes original material that spans a variety of genres. Through it all, Anderson has relied on HARMAN’s AKG C519 miniature condenser microphone in the studio and on stage.

“This new album in unique because I didn’t set out to make a typical album—I kind of just created whatever music I felt like,” Anderson said of Style Meets Substance. “There’s some rock, some Bollywood, some jazz and some old-school hip-hop. It’s creative, adventurous and I hope it takes the listener on a musical journey, through these different musical genres and eras.”

More than two years ago, Anderson began his tenure with the New Power Generation. “I started playing live with Prince and then later began working with him in the studio, recording and creating songs from scratch,” he said. “It’s been cool to work with him in a studio setting. He knows when to jump in and offer feedback and when to pull back and let you be creative. He’s very respectful to his musicians and that’s the beauty of working with him. At the same time, I learn something new from him every day. I feel like I’m in grad school!”

For several years, Anderson has relied on the AKG C519 for use with his saxophone, clipped onto the bell of the instrument. “The C519 has been a tremendous tool for me when recording and performing live—whether it’s at a club with my own band, or in an arena with Prince,” Anderson noted. “It reproduces my playing with clarity and purity. I’ve been a fan of AKG microphones for a long time and the C519 lives up to the standard of quality that AKG has set for all its products.”

The C519’s tight cardioid polar pattern makes it an ideal tool for use near monitor wedges, while its flat frequency response delivers a natural, powerful and clear sound.

Anderson also uses an AKG WMS4500 wireless microphone system for live performances and rehearsals. “I love the WMS4500–it’s crisp, clean and clear. It just punches for me and gives me that clarity I need. I can trim back the high end if I want and pump up the low/mid when I need to.”

Mandy Parnell Goes Green

Black Saloon Studios in East London is flying the flag for environmental awareness by using solar power to fulfil all of its electricity needs.

Award-winning mastering engineer Mandy Parnell, owner of internationally acclaimed facility, says: “We are using solar panels to power the entire studio and part of the attached living space. This is quite an achievement, considering we operate on a 24/7 basis and run an assortment of amplifiers, electronic instruments, microphones and studio hardware. If we can do it, I don’t see why other music industry companies shouldn’t follow suit – everyone should be looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint and for businesses like ours solar energy also makes economic sense.”

Parnell says the transition to greener energy was very smooth and the panels are now providing enough power to sell a surplus back to the National Grid.

Based in Walthamstow village where Parnell has been a resident and business owner for 13 year, Black Saloon Studios hosts projects for a wide variety of artist including The XX, Feist, Sigur Ros, Bjork, The Knife, Frightened Rabbit, Brian Eno. Current projects being mastered at Black saloon include Glass Animals, Jungle, Bjork and Philip Selway.

Mandy Parnell’s presence in the Walthamstow Village has contributed to the ever-expanding creative and artistic community, by introducing a diverse range of artists to the area. “We are becoming a greener borough and my neighbours have really embraced our solar panel initiative,” she says. “The artists love it, too. I think everyone should be doing it.”

Wu-Jin’s New Phoenix Valley Cultural Center Spreads its Wings with Renkus-Heinz

Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China – May, 2014 – On a busy thoroughfare in Changzhou’s Wujin District, the aptly named Phoenix Valley Cultural Center stretches its wings over more than 156,000 square feet. The vast complex is the largest and most modern of its kind, an urban nexus that is home to four cinemas, sports and dance halls, art galleries and an early childhood education center, as well as a retail hub, children’s playgrounds, and a public square with canals and gardens.

The complex’s crown jewel is The Grand Theater. Seating just over 1,000 across two floors, the Grand Theater shifts the typical theater paradigm into something just as unique as it is state-of-the-art. The venue’s classic stage can host a wide range of events, from musical to theatrical, and 17 projectors can transform the stage, as well as the walls of the auditorium, into an Omni-Max style theater.

Audio for the Theater needed to be equally versatile, able to accommodate a variety of events, from drama, live shows and TV to meetings, conferences and multi-media reporting. The main system, designed by prominent consulting firm Shanghai LeDian Audio Equipment Co., Ltd., comprises left,  right, and center hangs of 14 Renkus-Heinz STLA/9 line array loudspeakers in all. Eight SGX41 four-inch loudspeakers are mounted on the orchestra rail for front fill, with six TRX81 boxes providing rear fill, and four DRS18-2B subwoofers adding low end reinforcement. Onstage monitoring is handled by a combination of PNX151T, TRX121/9, and CF81 cabinets.

For cinema presentations, a surround system is installed comprising 20 TRX81/12 boxes, along with three STX7/64 cabinets mounted up top for sound effects. Onstage effects are provided by a single STX5M2 loudspeaker and STX5 subwoofer.

Adjacent to the Grand Theater is The Small Theater, a 200+ seat auditorium designed for meetings, multimedia conferences, runway shows, small performances and other cultural activities. Shanghai LeDian selected left and right arrays of three Renkus-Heinz STX4 cabinets as the Small Theater’s main system, with four CFX81 boxes for front fill and a pair of DRS18-2B subs.

For Shanghai LeDan Audio Equipment Co.,. Ltd., the addition of one of China’s most prominent new cultural centers to the company’s portfolio is a prestigious one, to be sure. And for the Phoenix Valley Cultural Center, LeDan’s selection of Renkus-Heinz loudspeaker systems assures that the venue will continue to deliver the finest in audio quality, no matter what type of performance is on the program.
