BrightSign Bridges the Gap Between Digital Menu Boards and Restaurant POS

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage media players, will showcase its recent advances in digital menu board content creation and updates at the NRA Show. In addition to delivering a complete menu board solution including hardware, software and networking, BrightSign offers simple methods, including an iOS App and Web UI, in which restaurant operators can create, update, and manage digital menu boards.

BrightSign will also announce plans for an aggressive push to promote key advances in restaurant-related digital signage. Headlining the company’s presence at NRA is BrightSign’s collaboration with Dinerware, one of the leading providers of point-of-sale (POS) solutions for the restaurant market. BrightSign will demonstrate a solution that finally integrates employee POS and customer-facing menu board content.

“For years restaurants have run POS and menu content in parallel, yet the technology hasn’t been readily available to integrate these two closely related functional elements,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “BrightSign and Dinerware have a mutual interest in bridging this gap, and we worked tirelessly to create a solution that’s both affordable and easy to integrate within the restaurant’s existing infrastructure. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and we can’t wait to demonstrate our solution to potential customers at NRA.”

To-date, point-of-sale technology evolved on its own path as digital signage gained a solid foothold in bars, restaurants and other foodservice settings. While these two functions matured separately as established, robust solutions in their own right, cross-platform incompatibility made it impossible to bridge the two. This mutual challenge brought together Dinerware and BrightSign and ultimately led to the solution that will be demonstrated at NRA 2014.

“BrightSign’s deep understanding of digital signage in the foodservice industry matched perfectly with our point-of-sale expertise,” said Rob Freytag, Director of Sales at Dinerware. “We believe our solution will streamline technology infrastructure and profoundly impact efficiency within virtually any restaurant setting.”

Rockbot, a social jukebox application powered by BrightSign and targeted to bars and nightclubs will also be demonstrated, as well as two stunning menu board video walls.

To view these demonstrations at the NRA Show 2014, visit BrightSign in booth 6267. For more information about BrightSign’s complete portfolio of digital signage solutions for the restaurant industry, visit www.brightsign.biz.

Sonnet Introduces Fusion QR RAID 5 SATA Storage System With Quad Interface

Newest Member of Sonnet’s Award-Winning Fusion Family Offers Highly Affordable Four-Drive RAID 5 Storage in a Lightweight and Portable Package

IRVINE, Calif. — May 14, 2014 – Sonnet Technologies today announced the launch of the Fusion(TM) QR, a compact and portable four-drive RAID 5 SATA storage system. The Fusion QR replaces the company’s Fusion D400QR5, which also offered reliable and affordable RAID 5 storage. Like the legacy system, the Fusion QR integrates a high-performance RAID 5 controller for maximum versatility, critical data protection, and added value, and offers a flexible quad interface that includes eSATA, dual FireWire 800, and USB 3.0.

“With the Fusion QR, we took everything that pros loved about the D400QR5 and made it lighter, more portable, and more affordable than ever. It is a great solution for on-location or mobile productions that require a reliable and versatile four-drive SATA storage in a compact package,” said Robert Farnsworth, Sonnet CEO.

Available without drives, and in 8TB, 12TB, and 16TB configurations, the Fusion QR features a high-performance internal RAID controller that manages the enclosed 3.5-inch hard drives and offers five drive configuration options for maximum flexibility. The RAID 5 configuration offers the best performance with enhanced security for critical files and provides data protection in case one of the drives fails. Other configurations include maximum capacity and performance (RAID 0), balanced performance and security (RAID 10), and most concurrent audio file editing (JBOD). By setting a switch, users can select RAID modes and configure the drives to meet their performance and data security requirements.

The Fusion QR delivers data transfers up to 250 MB/sec read and 240 MB/sec write with its drives configured as a RAID 5 group. The storage system’s USB 3.0, locking eSATA, and dual FireWire 800 interfaces, with three matching cables included, enable users to connect the Fusion QR to practically any computer. A built-in carrying handle makes the rugged and lightweight enclosure highly portable and a large, low-noise fan keeps the QR cool in noise-sensitive environments.

The Fusion QR is available now with suggested retail prices ranging from $369 for the model without drives (0TB) to $1,499 for the 16TB model. The Fusion QR is backed with Sonnet’s one-year warranty. More information on the Fusion QR is available at http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusionqr.html.

Kramer Electronics’ Educational Partnership with AQAV is off to a Successful Start

In November 2013, Kramer Electronics announced their newly minted educational partnership with the Association for Quality in Audio Visual Technology (AQAV); becoming the first educational partner in this program.

AQAV upholds their motto, “Saving the AV industry … one system at a time,” by offering courses designed to help personnel at Pro AV dealer/integrators, and technology managers who purchase and use AV equipment to improve the quality of every step in the installation and commissioning process. Focusing on quality results in greater profitability for the AV integrators, and effective and trouble free systems that are fully operational from the day they are installed.

Since the establishment of the partnership, Kramer Electronics has held five successful AQAV trainings with many individuals completing the workshop and earning their AQAV certifications. The trainings, which have taken place at the Kramer Electronics US Headquarters in Clinton, New Jersey and at Newcomb & Boyd, a consulting company in Atlanta, Georgia, have all been met with great turnouts and enthusiasm. Those who have successfully earned their AQAV certifications continue to see their work pay off in their projects. Both end users and Pro AV integrators are able to attest to the benefits of AQAV. End user, Elaine Manfredonia, Vice President of JPMorgan explained, “Being AV9000 compliant is a major plus for providers that want to work for us. It eliminates untold costs and aggravation that the client won’t and the integrator shouldn’t accept. No question the business is trending this way.”

Pro AV integrators, such as Jeremy Elsesser of the Pro AV integrator Level 3 Audio Visual in Mesa, AZ, are also aware of the advantages of being AQAV certified. Jeremy stated, “Since Level 3 Audio Visual started down the path of AV9000 and began implementing the systems into our daily workflows, we have seen a large increase in team collaboration along with a significant reduction of time spent in the field. Culturally, AV9000 has provided a mechanism to get everyone on the same page and pursuing the highest quality of work we can provide.”

In addition, higher education markets are also reveling in the AQAV benefits. Dan Doolen, Chief Instructional Media Systems Engineer at the University of Illinois, explains how his team has embraced the AQAV standards, “We’ve built AV9000 into our campus facility standards and follow it on all our installations. It has everyone working from the same page and explains the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how.’ It’s turned into a friendly competition between the installation team and the commissioning team.”

Kramer Electronics plans to build on the momentum of these first workshops, with three more upcoming AQAV trainings: two in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 14-16, and one in Dallas, Texas on July 29-31.

Examples of companies who are embracing the AQAV standards are Level 3 Audio Visual, Illinois State University, The University of Illinois, Sensory Technologies, Vistacom Audio Video Solutions, Comprehensive Technical Group, Newcomb Boyd, Technical Innovations and Whitlock.

For more information about AQAV, please visit the AQAV section of the Kramer website at www.kramerus.com/academy/aqav.asp or the AQAV web site at www.aqav.org.

Christie’s 4K Digital Cinema Technologies Light Up Screens at Toronto International Film Festival

Christie®, a world leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual displays, is proud to once again be the official projection partner to the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival® in September. A Festival sponsor for 14 consecutive years, Christie has played an integral role in ushering in the digital age at this renowned showcase for local and international talents. Today, with the help of this partnership, more than 99 percent of all Festival entries are screened digitally, with an increasing number in 4K, sharpening the shared experience between filmmaker and audience.

The Toronto International Film Festival is recognized as the largest public festival in the world and one of the most prestigious venues for emerging artists. It screens close to 400 films from 60+ countries, from blockbusters to small independents and documentaries at every level, with nearly half the films making their world premiere. Last year’s People’s Choice Award winner, 12 Years a Slave, the powerful British-American historical drama from director Steve McQueen, went on to receive nine Academy Award® nominations, win “Best Motion Picture of the Year,” as well as a Best Supporting Actress award for its breakout star, Lupita Nyong’o. Other past favorites that premiered at the Festival and went on to international acclaim, including winning Oscars and Golden Globe awards, were Argo, Slum Dog Millionaire, and Silver Linings Playbook.

“Christie has been a true partner in every sense of the word. Its digital cinema projectors were among the first to be used at the Festival, helping us to demonstrate the exceptional power of this technology to reignite the excitement of the collective movie-going experience,” said Diane Cappelletto, TIFF’s director of technical production services. “The future is 4K and, as Digital Projection Partner, Christie continues to raise the bar of cinema excellence, increasing its 4K presence to more accurately present the filmmakers’ visions.”

A variety of Christie technologies will be used throughout the Festival venues, including the Christie Solaria Series 4K and 2K DLP Cinema® projectors, the Christie HD10K-M projector with dual HD-SDI input module, and six Christie CineIPM 2K digital cinema image processors. Reflecting the Festival’s move to 4K-resolution screenings, Christie’s sponsorship features 4K projections at Roy Thomson Hall, Ryerson Theatre, The Elgin Theatre’s Visa Screening Room, and Princess of Wales Theatre. Christie’s 4K projection technology is also installed at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

“Digital cinema is all about creating pristine, high resolution images that help filmmakers get closer than ever before to their audiences,” said Kathryn Cress, vice president, global and corporate marketing, Christie. “Christie has been a leading advocate for 4K technology, and TIFF’s impact in this arena is indisputable, with a programming team that ensures the best and largest variety of films, talent and emerging stars make their mark here.”

“Christie is committed to strengthening its leadership role in digital technology on the world stage,” said John Hallman, Christie’s director of Canadian sales. “It is a great privilege to partner with TIFF and help the next generation of filmmakers, as well as many of its current masters, share their vision with an international audience.”

Christie’s visual technologies are part of many leading film festivals around the globe, including Cannes International Film Festival, May 14-25, and the Shanghai International Film Festival June 14-22.

Moody Gardens Chooses D3D Cinema and Christie for 4K 3D Giant Screen 6P Laser Projection System

Christie® and D3D Cinema are pleased to announce that the world’s first museum-based 4K 3D giant screen 6P laser projection system will be installed and premiering at Moody Gardens MG3D Cinema in Q4 2014. The system design and configuration will further distinguish the Moody Gardens MG3D Theater as one of the world’s most premier cinema venues.

“This is the game-changing milestone that the museum giant screen industry has longed to achieve for many years,” said Don Kempf, president and founder of D3D Cinema. “Moody Gardens’ audiences will be the first in the world to have a 6P giant screen laser experience, unarguably the future of cinema presentation. The DCI and DIGSS-compliant Christie laser solution, coupled with 6P glasses technology, will be unparalleled in terms of image quality. D3D has always been committed to designing first-rate giant screen solutions that are built on a more economically viable business model. It’s a great thrill to be able to achieve this goal AND be first to market with such a premium solution.”

John Zendt, CEO of Moody Gardens agrees. “D3D Cinema has proven time and again that they can deliver the goods first, better and more efficiently. We thoroughly researched all known laser options and the D3D/Christie solution beats the competition across the board – including, significantly, the price. We’ll own this laser system outright, which is important to us, saving significant operating dollars over the life of the laser modules. We’re really proud to have our theater represented as a pioneer in digital cinema and invite all museum executives to visit for a demonstration.”

Christie 4K 6PLaser Digital Projection System

The upgrade will replace Moody Gardens’ existing 4K xenon system with a state-of-the-art pair of Christie 4K laser projection heads, a 6P modular laser light farm with fiber optic delivery, Christie 4K 3D high-bitrate server, new giant screen 6P laser glasses, and a new premium white screen. “Our 6P laser design is a huge step forward for the industry,” said Don Shaw, senior director, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “This particular system is designed to achieve up to 14-foot lamberts onscreen in 3D, far exceeding any ‘ultra-bright’ industry standards. Our non-flashing 6P architecture is by far the most light-efficient 3D technology on the market, providing incredible brightness, enhanced color gamut and a remarkable contrast ratio. On a speckle-free premium white screen, Moody Gardens will deliver a peerless cinematic presentation to their audience. It’s a real feather in our cap to have Moody Gardens as a flagship theater.”

This latest collaboration between D3D and Moody Gardens builds on a longstanding partnership. In January 2011, D3D and Moody co-hosted the first annual Digital Cinema Symposium, showcasing 4K projection technology on a giant screen for the first time, including the first 4K vs. 70mm split screen shootout. The following year, at the 2012 Digital Cinema Symposium, D3D showcased the first 4K 3D demonstration, 11.1 3D audio, high frame rate 3D as well as a prototype laser on a giant screen, all industry firsts. The 2012 event was a milestone, marking the first time that industry professionals overwhelmingly acknowledged a digital presentation exceeded the quality of a 70mm film in a side-by-side comparison. A case study was recently published by D3D & Moody Gardens illustrating the financial benefits and qualitative success of digital presentation and rebranding.

Moody Gardens’ marks the first giant screen laser deal of many for D3D and Christie. “Lasers raise the bar,” adds Kempf. “After Moody Gardens, our first laser dome system is around the corner, which will save our dome clients hundreds of thousands in operating costs per year. The giant screen industry is about to look quite a bit brighter!”

ACIR Professional Celebrates Moms at Annual Music Fest

Mays Landing, N.J.—Held Saturday, May 10th in celebration of Mother’s Day, the annual Mother’s Day Festival took place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ and for the third year, ACIR Professional (Mays Landing, NJ) provided audio production services for the 14,500 attendees. This year’s line up included Charlie Wilson, Gladys Knight, and Heads of State featuring Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill. The Mother’s Day Music Fest is always the biggest holiday event at the newly renovated, historic Boardwalk Hall, drawing sell-out crowds.

ACIR provided two Yamaha PM5Ds digital audio consoles, one at front of house and one at monitors. The main PA consisted of 16 d&b J8s, four J12s, 16 B2 subs, and D12 amplifiers. The monitor system included 12 d&B Q1s used for side fills along with Q subs, ACIR 115 wedges, and 12 Yamaha T3N amplifiers.

“The system sounded incredible,” states John Grasso, ACIR Professional co-owner who functioned as front of house engineer. The changeover provided festival-like challenges so we treated it as a festival style in that we had three changeovers with only 10 minutes in between to re-set. This was accomplished by great pre-planning on the part of our crew.” In addition to Grasso, the ACIR crew included Dave Lefko, ME; Bobby Harper, systems engineer; Mike Nugent, systems tech; and Dominick Friia as crew chief. ACIR also provided the entire backline.
