Meyer Sound Constellation at Danish Jyske Bank: Defining Meeting Spaces of the Future

With its new Meyer Sound Constellation® acoustic system, the headquarters of Denmark’s Jyske Bank has broken stereotypes in corporate meeting room design. This architectural and sonic showcase has seamlessly integrated Constellation into its everyday use, from board meetings, presentations, and open discussions to videoconferencing, all without the burden of hand-held or tabletop microphones. The system has also opened up abundant possibilities for future entertainment functions for bank staff.

Steen Mertz, director of communications technology at Jyske Bank, partnered with Anders Jørgensen, project manager for Copenhagen-based integrator Stouenborg, with the aim to create a welcoming space that encourages free-flowing conversations.

“Our goal was to optimize the space and improve communications within the bank, as well as with international business partners during videoconferences,” says Mertz. “With the adaptability and surprisingly natural acoustical qualities of Constellation, we have achieved this goal to a remarkable degree.”

The Constellation system has four presets customized for the bank’s range of business uses. These settings take advantage of Constellation’s voice lift feature, which generates precisely articulated and directed early reflections to greatly enhance intelligibility.

In Presentation mode, the system picks up the signals near the presenter and reproduces them in the audience area, while in Debate mode, the gain is raised throughout the room so all may participate in a discussion and be heard easily, with no need for microphones or raised voices. In Conference Table mode, the system focuses on the sounds from the center of the room, and Small Groups mode uses subtle reverberation effects to provide acoustical isolation between adjacent groups.

For external videoconferencing, Constellation seamlessly picks up all voices, with no need for individual microphones. “We’ve already had compliments from other companies we work with,” reports Mertz. “They say it’s very easy to hear what everyone in the room is saying, and this is mainly due to Constellation.”

Constellation also avoids the communication hazards that individual tabletop microphones present in conference applications. “With tabletop mics, if you look up and down or side to side, the level changes,” says Jørgensen. “But with Constellation you can turn in any direction, even stand up and move around, and everyone in the room still hears you clearly.”

In addition, the system includes special presets with long reverberation times of up to four seconds for musical applications. These long settings are appreciated by the bank’s in-house choir, which now uses the space for weekly rehearsals.

“The system sounds completely natural, as if you were changing wall materials, or moving walls closer or further away on demand,” adds Jørgensen.

Measuring 23 by 9.5 meters, the Jyske Bank meeting room holds up to 75 people, and can be quickly configured for theatre-style presentations, board meetings around a table, or simultaneous small group sessions.

The Constellation system comprises 36 MM-4XPD and 22 MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers, two UP-4XP 48 V loudspeakers, four Stella-8C installation loudspeakers, eight MM-10XP 48 V subwoofers, and 25 discreetly mounted miniature condenser microphones. A D-Mitri® digital audio platform running on Constellation’s patented VRAS™ acoustical algorithm is at the core of the system.

Ranked by Bloomberg as Denmark’s second largest bank, Jyske Bank has offices or subsidiaries in six other countries. Inside Denmark, Jyske Bank is noted for its emphasis on a customer-friendly experience, including local branches that often look more like neighborhood cafés than financial institutions.

With Nearly 300 Meyer Sound Loudspeakers, Self-Powered Advantage a Hit at Beijing Auto Show

At the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, 20 car manufacturers relied on nearly 300 self-powered Meyer Sound loudspeakers to provide visually unobtrusive and high-quality reinforcement. These brands included Chrysler, Toyota, Volkswagen, Subaru, and Honda; luxury makers Bentley, Ferrari, and Maserati; and six domestic Chinese manufacturers.

“Our business is focused on commercial exhibition, and it’s a great advantage for us to offer self-powered Meyer Sound systems,” says Dakun Bai, audio technology department director for Beijing Huelead AV Equipment, which provided more than 124 Meyer Sound loudspeakers for voice and music applications. “The line level audio cables don’t suffer the attenuation losses of speaker cables, and they are easier to tie on a truss. Self-powering also eliminates the noise and heat dissipation of amplifier racks, and because each driver has its own amplifier, sound quality and system reliability are much improved.”

The Volkswagen exhibit space included 30 UPA-1P, 30 UPM-1P, and 13 UPQ-1P loudspeakers; 10 UPJ-1P VariO™ loudspeakers; 16 MINA™ and 15 MICA® line array loudspeakers; and five-each 700-HP and 500-HP subwoofers. The system was optimized and driven by a Galileo® loudspeaker management system comprising eight Galileo 616 processors.

“Galileo is a great-sounding and highly reliable signal processor,” says Dakun Bai. “Using the Compass® control software wirelessly makes it very convenient to adjust the system from anywhere in the exhibit space. Also, the MAPP Online Pro® acoustical prediction program makes it easy to communicate with our clients’ technical teams anywhere in the world.”

In addition to Beijing & Shanghai Huelead AV Equipment, three other companies also supplied Meyer Sound products such as M’elodie® line array loudspeakers and USW-1P subwoofers. They include Superb Oriental Exhibition Service, AV Promotions Ltd., and Beijing & Shanghai Bright AV Solutions Ltd.

Informally known as “Auto China 2014,” the exhibition took place at the massive China International Exhibition Center across more than 230,000 square meters. It attracted more than 2,100 exhibitors from 22 countries, with estimated attendance at well over one million.

Meyer Sound MINA Goes Gold at Pennsylvania’s F.M. Kirby Center

The F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. has installed a new system based around Meyer Sound MINA™ line array loudspeakers. As part of the restoration for the art deco auditorium, custom-painted gold arrays blend seamlessly into the gilt wood proscenium arch. Dave Grogan of Wilkes-Barre-based Effects Unlimited handled system design consultation and installation.

“The MINA system has a powerful sound, and fills the hall beautifully,” says Michael Dale, technical director for the F.M. Kirby Center. “The system will be accepted on 95 percent of the riders. It’s got the most bang for the buck, and I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

In addition to dual hangs of 13-each MINA loudspeakers, the Meyer Sound system also includes six 600-HP subwoofers, four UPM-1P loudspeakers as front fills, and a Galileo® loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 616 processor for system drive and alignment.

“The MINA arrays were the preferred solution, as the venue didn’t want a massive array of black loudspeakers hanging in front of that gorgeous proscenium,” says Grogan. “As small as the MINAs are, they still throw beautifully to the back of the balcony. And the centre’s management was flabbergasted at how well the custom painting matched.”

Matching the loudspeakers’ color to the venue was a smooth and simple process, according to Michael Dale. “I took a color swatch up to that level of the proscenium, made a selection, sent it off to Meyer, and they sent back a piece of cabinet and metal grille for verification,” he reports. “The match really is astonishingly good.”

Dale adds that the system has already impressed a number of touring FOH engineers. “The sound is just phenomenal,” he says. “Alice Cooper was our first real test, and his FOH mixer loved what he heard. I heard much the same reaction when the Experience Hendrix tour came through with some of the world’s top guitarists.”

For the 1,800-seat venue’s movie showings, Effects Unlimited also provided three new 7,000-lumen Panasonic video projectors with image merging by Airflex 5D processing. FOH is mixed on a MIDAS Venice 320 console.

The lavish art deco structure housing the F.M. Kirby Center was completed in 1938, closed in 1977 due to economic factors, and reopened in 1986.

MerleFest 2014: The Tradition Continues with DiGiCo

SE Systems deploys numerous SD series consoles for 27th annual event

WILKESBORO, North Carolina — Country music superstars Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard, as well as bluegrass icons Dr. Ralph Stanley and Ricky Skaggs, were among the 130 acts over four days in late April whose tunes wafted pristinely from MerleFest 2014. As has been the case for the past 26 years, DiGiCo consoles processed much of the music emanating from the Wilkesboro, NC festival’s 13 stages, helping to cement MerleFest’s reputation as a highly celebrated perennial American music event.

MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson, son of bluegrass legend Doc Watson, as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and to celebrate “traditional plus” music, a term coined by Doc Watson to describe the wide variety of musical genres and styles celebrated at MerleFest.

Since the festival’s beginnings, Greensboro-based SE Systems has been handling sound for MerleFest. SE Systems CEO and Founder Cliff Miller was working with Doc Watson at the time and helped put the audio production in place for the first MerleFest, which was quaintly mounted on the back of a flatbed.

Sound quality is SE Systems’ primary consideration in anointing DiGiCo as its console supplier of choice. “The SD10s have been our workhorse for the last few years; they just sound great,” says Miller, a pro sound pro, as well as a first-rate musician himself; after Merle died in a tractor accident, Miller started filling in on guitar at many of Doc’s gigs.

DiGiCo consoles, according to SE Systems Media Relations Director Bryan Smith, are ideally suited for country music and bluegrass. “Acoustic instruments come across in a very natural way,” he says. “When you put acoustic instruments in front of a mic, you don’t want the preamps, effects or processing to change the sound. Cliff carried the DiGiCo SD10s on tour with Alison Krauss and we currently have two out with her now. When you’re mixing the number one female Grammy Award winner, it better sound good. The DiGiCos have proved that night after night.”

He goes on to explain that the DiGiCo boards are “very transparent and sound like the old analog desks.” When comparing digital consoles, DiGiCo’s 96KHz performance was “what also helped us decide on the SD10s. All of the plug-ins and effects work perfectly and it’s a fairly easy console for guest engineers to mix on in a festival situation. We also see DiGiCo on many of the artist’s riders.” This detail was underscored by the fact that headliner Alan Jackson brought in a DiGiCo SD8 for his Thursday night set.

On the main Doc & Merle Watson Theatre stage this year, two DiGiCo SD10-36 consoles were used for mains and monitors. The adjacent Cabin stage, which was used for smaller acts while the primary stage was reset, featured a compact SD11 to mix mains and monitors and was positioned next to the primary stage SD10 FOH desk. Smith describes the SD11 as “a great small rack mount mixer with all of the ‘big boy’ features.”

The Creekside stage used two SD10-24s for mains and monitors, while the Dance stage used two SD9s for mains and monitors. “This was the first year we used the SD9 at this stage,” Smith notes. “It worked fantastic; all the guest engineers loved it.”

An additional DiGiCo SD9 was used in the recording trailer. With every DiGiCo console deployed using either a D-Rack or SD Rack, all stages had fiber runs and SE recorded everything to a Live Tracker for archival purposes.

That DiGiCo still figures prominently in the MerleFest gear complement is hardly a surprise. Three years ago Miller bought two SD10s – SE Systems’ first DiGiCos, not to mention the first SD10 desks in the US – sight unseen. “I have been in the industry for a very long time and this was the first time that I ever purchased two new consoles without even putting my fingers on the faders! The sound quality is the best I’ve ever heard in a digital console, surpassing most analog consoles. The SD10 can be configured to operate like any old favorite console, but with hundreds more features,” he says.

About DiGiCo
DiGiCo is a UK-based manufacturer of some of the world’s most popular, successful and ground-breaking digital mixing consoles for the live, theatre, broadcast and post production industries and is exclusively distributed in the U.S. by Group One Ltd. of Farmingdale, New York.
