On the Eve of Its 40th Anniversary, Aphex® Is Making Bold Moves for the Future

— Historic pro audio brand is adding talent and technology to reinforce focus on new DSP offerings and tech licensing —

BURBANK, CA, May 20, 2014 — Pro audio brand Aphex®, a leader in professional audio technology, is currently in its 40th year of business and plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary in grand style next year. On the way to this exciting milestone, Aphex continues to grow and expand its focus on developing new DSP technologies with the goal of putting these into Aphex Pro and Prosumer products, as well as into a variety of products made by OEM licensees.

Aphex is in the midst of expanding into critical markets beyond Pro Audio to augment its business and offerings, with technology geared to Assistive Listening; Speech Recognition; and Prosumer Recording, Podcasting, Telecommunication and Automotive Infotainment.

Since purchasing Aphex in 2010, parent company DWV Entertainment has made dramatic changes to expand the Aphex brand and its pro products. Starting with a major facility change (moving into a stand-alone building in Burbank) and revising its entire manufacturing and production process, as well as creating digital code of the legendary Aural Exciter®, Aphex is leveraging its capabilities and technology roadmap to take the company into the future, with additional audio enhancement products and DSP code that can impact products in a much broader range of key applications. Adding extraordinary talent to its DSP and USB engineering team, Aphex now has the tools in place to excite the world for another 40 years.

Aphex continues to grow its pro audio product line with a wide assortment of 500 Series and USB products, and now, with added emphasis on new technology development and licensing, Aphex will be able to achieve even greater goals.

Evidence of this future-focused growth plan is the recent addition of Rob Barrett as Director of Digital Business Development. Rob’s software and development skills, honed working with Apple, Ford, Motorola and Google, give laser-like focus to Aphex’s roadmap of new and advanced audio and hearing product development.

DWV Entertainment and Aphex Chairman David Wiener stated, “Aphex has a legendary presence in the pro audio and music world. Now it’s time to share our ability to improve sound with more people who can benefit from improved listening experiences. It’s very exciting to see the evolution and expansion of Aphex into the markets we all live our daily lives in. Everyone needs better sound, and not just in the studio and on stage. We truly want to make your world sound better!” Wiener added, “With Rob leading our expansion into licensing, and our new DSP and USB engineering team, our future is grounded in producing timely technologies for pros, consumers, and commercial and military applications.”

“We continue to look for exceptional talent for arenas we are moving into, including the large market expansion with automotive infotainment systems. Our business association with Ferrari and preliminary meetings confirm Aphex tech has wide ranging applications for this important segment of the audio and communications market,” stated David Wiener, in response to questions about the obvious connections DWV Entertainment has with the automotive industry.

Plans for Aphex’s 40th anniversary event will be announced later this year.

Christie Technology Takes Visitors on Spectacular Coast to Coast Visual Journey

Christie® technology is taking people on an unforgettable journey across Canada – without flight delays, congested airports or jetlag. A spectacular new flight simulation ride called Fly Over® Canada launches guests into a thrilling immersive experience including the jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies, cosmopolitan cities, the rugged East Coast and more via the Christie D4K35603-chip DLP® projector and images produced by Sherpas Cinema.

Christie Projectors are used in Fly Over Canada

Installed at Canada Place in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Fly Over Canada also features Uplift, a preshow presentation produced by the award winning Montreal-based Moment Factory using eight Christie DWU675-E 1-chip DLP® projectors.

Christie: The Brightest and the Best Choice
“As we built up the company we started talking to Christie about various aspects of this project. Moment Factory then specified Christie for the preshow projectors so that got us hooked up with the (Christie) DWU670-E projectors,” said Eric Sambell, director, construction &technology, Soaring Attractions.

“After considerable research by the technical and creative team at Soaring Attractions, the owner/operator of Fly Over Canada concluded that Christie was also the clear 4K projector choice for the main ride.

“We chose the Christie D4K3560 projector solution because we needed the brightness and intensity to light a 19-meter diameter surface area. Obviously we needed the brightest projector and as much resolution as we could get,” continued Sambell. “That meant a 4K solution but because it’s a motion ride we needed 60 hertz to avoid motion blur – which led us to the D4K3560.”

The Christie D4K3560 projector is part of the Christie TruLife™ electronics platform offering customers superior image and video quality for the most comfortable and realistic viewing experience.

Christie Steps up and does it Right
“The projector sits out on a perch, which made it a bit of challenge but the installation went smoothly and Christie made sure everything was perfect; they came through with everything right when we needed it. Everyone, from the Christie field application engineers to Geoff Chick (central and western regional sales manager, Canada), really stepped up and made things right.”

The show opened last summer and, according to Sambell, ran at capacity on weekends and well-exceeded expectations in the months that followed. He said people have returned up to ten times and the reaction from people of all ages has been overwhelmingly positive.

Christie DWU675-E1-chip DLP® projectors provide trusted performance, reliability and exceptional image quality. Ideal for small auditoriums, boardrooms, classrooms and houses of worship, the Christie DWU675-E delivers image blending and warping, stacking capabilities and precision color matching for use in either fixed or rental staging applications.

Vista Systems’ Spyder Forms the Core of Extensive Technical Component at New Preston Trail Community Church in Texas

There’s a Spyder inside Preston Trail Community Church’s new facility in Frisco, Texas, and it’s definitely meant to be there. The Vista Systems Spyder 344, which will migrate from the church’s existing space, is at the heart of a high-end roster of equipment in the media-savvy house of worship.

“We are very media driven,” says Preston Trail’s tech director Jerod Chambers. “We’re relocating the Spyder from our current church and upgrading everything else around it.”

Chambers notes that the non-denominational church, which celebrated its first public service in September 2002, has grown from 200 members to over 5,000. The current facility opened in December 2006 and offers three Sunday services. The new facility site was dedicated May 18, and the congregation will move in this summer.

“We’re doubling the size of the venue,” Chambers says. “The Spyder has served us well as our church has grown. Now, we’ll be able to use it in our new facility with all updated equipment.” That equipment will include a complement of studio cameras, RenewedVision’s ProPresenter church worship software, Blackmagic playback devices, alpha keyers and a routing system, which will distribute signals around the campus and also tie feeds to live streaming.

The Spyder will work in conjunction with a par of 18K projectors and a 30K projector. “To facilitate our creativity we need all our projection surfaces to act as one,” Chambers explains. “The Spyder will be operated by volunteers, and while it’s very cutting edge it’s also incredibly capable and volunteer-friendly.”

He praises the “world-class support” Preston Trail receives from Vista Systems. “When you call, you get a real person,” he reports. “At the end of the day, the most important thing a vendor can supply is a good relationship, and Vista Systems really delivers on that.”
