Introducing the Moog Theremini: A re-imagining of one of the oldest electronic musical instruments

Asheville, NC, May 28, 2014— Today Moog Music announced the official release of the Theremini; a re-imagining of one of the oldest electronic musical instruments, and Bob Moog’s first love – the Theremin. It is the only known instrument that you play without touching. Moving your hands in the space around its antennas controls pitch and volume. The Theremini combines a powerful sound engine derived from Moog’s award winning synthesizer, Animoog, with the traditional no-touch playing of a Theremin.

The Theremini’s sound engine captures the vast sonic vocabulary of Moog synthesizers and effects, allowing for a wide range of styles and tones. The front panel features a multi function LCD screen, which displays a chromatic tuner with real-time feedback of each note as it is played. This is a useful tool for correcting a player’s position and pitch for each note. The Theremini also features a portable design with tabletop feet, bottom nesting pitch antenna, and a built-in speaker for quick setup and rehearsal anywhere.

“Learning to play a traditional Theremin is extremely difficult because there’s no tactile feedback, so you have to rely completely on your ears,” said Moog Music CEO Mike Adams. “The theremini has built-in tools that not only help users learn to play, but also teach pitch recognition and scales. Now anyone can play immediately.”

The Theremini features controls for pitch correction, scale, and root note, which allow anyone to adjust the level of playing difficulty, and to explore new means of music creation and gestural control. At the maximum position, the Theremini will play every note in a selected scale perfectly, making it impossible to play a wrong note. If pitch correction is set to minimum, the Theremini performs exactly as a traditional Etherwave Theremin – an analog heterodyning oscillator controls pitch.

For live performance and gestural control, the Theremini features a stereo effects processor with two line level audio outputs, an assignable ¼” CV output jack with selectable range, and a mini USB jack for preset editing, sound and firmware updates, and MIDI control.

The Theremini has begun shipping and is available at authorized Moog Music dealers worldwide. moogmusic.com/dealers

MultiDyne 2014 Cine Gear Expo Exhibitor News

Visit MultiDyne(R) at the 2014 Cine Gear Expo — Booth 301

At the 2014 Cine Gear Expo, MultiDyne(R) will showcase a broad range of innovative, fiber-optic-based video and audio transport solutions designed specifically for pro A/V and broadcast applications.

A key highlight at the booth will be additions to the MultiDyne SilverBACK(TM) family of fiber transport solutions. Responding to consumer demand, MultiDyne has added the option for Ethernet transport and DC power taps to the SilverBACK family.

Key Product and Technology Demonstrations

The Dingo(TM) Fiber Transport Card Line
At the 2014 Cine Gear Expo, MultiDyne(R) will introduce The Dingo(TM), a new fiber transport card set. Featuring a flexible, elegant design, The Dingo supports a wide range of camera signals — 3G HD-SDI, composite video, analog or digital audio with cross-conversion, intercom, serial data, and Gigabit Ethernet — over a single fiber-optic cable. Available in three interoperable formats, The Dingo brings unprecedented flexibility to all aspects of fiber transport.

The Dingo is available as an openGear(R) compatible card that offers SNMP management and power redundancy in a single hot-swappable card; as a portable, black box that makes a great addition to MultiDyne’s LightBrix line; or as a smaller personality card for The BullDog(TM), LiGHTBoX(R), and LiGHTCuBE(R) product lines — all from MultiDyne. All three formats are interoperable, enabling seamless communication between openGear cards and other fiber transport equipment in the field.

The Dingo supports a variety of applications including broadcast, A/V, sports, OB, ENG, POV, and multicamera shoots, making it the ideal solution for professional camera operators as well as field and facility infrastructures.

As part of The Dingo Line, MultiDyne will release an individual card for each signal transport, as well as various signal combinations, creating over two dozen individual cards in order to fit each and every fiber transport application — all available as cards, a black box, or as personality cards for The BullDog, LiGHTBoX and LiGHTCuBE.

The BullDog(TM) Field Fiber Transport System and The BullDog Big Brothers
MultiDyne(R) is now shipping The BullDog(TM), an innovative field fiber transport system that packs endless functionality into a compact, rugged package. Using The BullDog, professional camera operators can significantly extend the transmission distance of multiple camera signals, including HD-SDI video, audio, intercom, control data, Ethernet, GPIOs, tally, and power. In addition to transporting any camera signal over a single fiber cable, The BullDog can efficiently transport up to eight HD-SDI signals in any direction. Designed to withstand the harsh environments of sports and ENG applications, the cost-effective and scalable system can be easily configured to support a wide range of existing and next-generation signals.

Already operating on a lightweight battery pack, The BullDog gives users the option of adding the MultiDyne JUICE power supply. In addition to transmitting signals to and from the camera with a hybrid optical cable, users can send power to The BullDog and the camera. With the Juice option, there is no need for a battery or local power, which is particularly useful at golf courses and venues without a power infrastructure.

In addition to its standard compact version of The BullDog, MultiDyne will highlight The BullDog Big Brothers, two larger-sized units that pack even more functionality into a still rugged and compact form factor.

SilverBACK-4K(TM) Will Have Significant New Features Including Ethernet and Power Taps
Also on display at the 2014 Cine Gear Expo will be the MultiDyne(R) SilverBACK-4K(TM), a powerful camera-mounted fiber transport solution that supports 4K (Ultra HD) digital television. Utilizing SilverBACK-4K, users can seamlessly transmit any camera signal, including Ultra HD video, HD-SDI video, audio, intercom, control data, GPIOs, tally, and power, over a single hybrid copper and fiber cable.

The SilverBACK-4K is available in two versions: a feature-rich model with a video option for viewfinder or monitor viewing in the field; and a low-cost model without the viewfinder/monitor viewing option. Ultra HD support can be added to any existing SilverBACK-4K system through a simple upgrade, enabling MultiDyne customers to deliver a state-of-the-art 4K television experience cost-effectively.

The award-winning MultiDyne SilverBACK-4K transport system features an elegant, compact case, measuring just over one inch thick, with a simple, intuitive user interface. Ideal for digital cinema, sports, ENG, D-SNG and multicamera studio applications, SilverBACK-4K can transport SDI video up to 4K uncompressed, with embedded or separate program audio. wysiwyg makes light of Macao’s ‘Rhythm of Life’ celebration

The ability of CAST Software’s wysiwyg pre-visualization solution to enable unique creative event ideas – while saving time and money – has been perfectly showcased by The Rhythm Of Life, a majestically colourful multimedia show held in Macao’s ancient city centre.

Commissioned by the Macao Cultural Institute and under the artistic direction of Lebigre & Roger, ‘The Rhythm of Life’ celebrated the Latin heritage of Macao – today a separately administered part of China, but until 1999 a colony of Portugal. Featuring dozens of performers wearing traditional painted faces, the parade was inspired by the great carnival of Viareggio in Tuscany.

“In total this was a three-hour show with around 2,500 cues, all of them controlled by SMPTE, and 1,300 lighting fixtures,” says Alessio de Simone, Lighting and Show Designer at Italy’s Trussdesign.it, which was contracted by Lebigre & Roger to produce the lighting and staging concept for ‘The Rhythm of Life’.

“We used wysiwyg in all phases of the project,” continues de Simone. “We began with the CAD function for our own internal brain-storming, then used the Design function to develop renderings that could be presented to our customers.

“Once the main structure had been approved, we created a Lighting Plot, and finally, once we had received the soundtrack of the show and the choreography, we literally locked ourselves in the blue room in our office where, for about six weeks, we pre-programmed the whole event scene-by-scene.”

De Simone says that wysiwyg’s ability to create moving ‘points of view’ from virtual cameras was invaluable in assessing the detail of light-fixture positioning and programming, as well as the effectiveness of the design as a whole. The final setup, complete with four spectacular automated ‘marionettes’ dancing and soaring up to 9m into the air, was realised in remarkably short order once the Trussdesign.it team had arrived in Macao.

“We placed all the projectors as called-for in our wysiwyg documentation, turned on all the moving heads – and every scene position was exactly as it had been in our pre-visualization. With small adjustments for pan and tilt, gobos and beams were perfect – just like they had appeared in our designs, 10,000km away.”

‘The Rhythm of Life’ was performed in front of 20,000 people and shown on three different Chinese TV channels, to ecstatic ratings and reviews. Yet without wysiwyg, the show might not have gone ahead at all, as monsoon rain swept through Macao in the days prior to the production, effectively halting all on-site programming.

“The rain stopped the job completely,” recalls de Simone. “As every lighting designer knows, when you have outside fixtures you can’t program during the day – only at night. And the rain just didn’t stop. Fortunately, thanks to our pre-visualization with wysiwyg, we had already fixed everything in our control panel.

“On the night of the performance, the sound manager pressed ‘Play’ on his Mac, we watched the SMPTE on our Hogs, sat back, relaxed…and enjoyed the show!”

Bruce Freeman, Chairman, CAST Group, concludes: “wysiwyg users are independent professionals. Whether you design for live theatre, special events, TV/film or Macao, you compete and you must deliver globally. Previz that does not cheat is vital – you must have confidence. This story is a great example of how pros used wysiwyg and the significance of previz as well as the rich graphics that make renderings really virtually real. Another reason wysiwyg’s previz often plays such a big role in special events is that it is “green” – it can save up to 60% of electricity costs because you don’t need to take over the space and run the lighting for the design phase.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional CBT 70J-1 Column Loudspeaker and CBT 70JE-1 Extension Box Receive THX Approval

NORTHRIDGE, California – Making its world-class CBT column loudspeakers available for even more cinemas around the world, HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced that its CBT 70J-1 column loudspeaker and CBT 70JE-1 extension box are now THX approved. This enables exhibitors to include CBT 70J-1 loudspeakers in their THX-certified theaters.

“The CBT 70J-1 was developed for a variety of applications where high-quality sound and low visual profile are priorities and we have seen considerable adoption of this product in cinema environments,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Manager, Commercial Sound, JBL Professional. “Now, with THX approval, even more moviegoers can enjoy the sonic benefits of the CBT 70J-1!”

The CBT 70J-1 is a high-power, 2-way line array system consisting of 16 high-frequency drivers and four high-power low-frequency drivers, all in a fully co-axial column loudspeaker, featuring JBL’s patented CBT Constant Beamwidth beam control circuitry. The vertical coverage of the loudspeaker is asymmetrical, sending more sound toward the far seats of the auditorium than the near seats. When used as surround speakers, this technological breakthrough provides a much wider “sweet spot” where the audience hears a similar amount of both left and right surround speakers.

The 2-foot height of the column array controls the sound as well as a 2-foot tall horn would, so this asymmetrical coverage takes place throughout a wide bandwidth of the operational range of the speaker. In addition, the CBT 70J-1 covers a very wide horizontal angle of 150 degrees, allowing the even coverage of more seats. The small frontal profile makes it visually unobtrusive and the bracket allows for both vertical tilt and horizontal swivel aiming. The CBT 70JE-1 extension box can be added to the CBT 70J-1, doubling the low-frequency output capability and extending the pattern control of the system down to a lower frequency.

Major cinema exhibitors have installed the CBT70J-1 and the CBT70J-1 + CBTJE in the past several years as surround systems. These systems provide complete even coverage for each seat throughout the auditoriums at high SPL levels.

“We are very pleased that THX has certified the CBT70J-1 + JE,” said Charles Goodsell, Senior
Manager, Cinema, JBL Professional. “Movie theaters throughout the world are already employing these systems and we are glad they will now be able to be installed in THX-certified auditoriums.”

HARMAN’s Studer Vista X Console Star of the Show at KOBA 2014

SEOUL, South Korea – At KOBA 2014, HARMAN’s Studer showcased a broad selection of its latest products for broadcast applications, including the flagship Vista X digital console with the new Studer Infinity Processing Engine, additional Vista Series models, the compact, cost-effective OnAir broadcast consoles and more. KOBA (the Korea International Broadcast, Audio and Lighting Equipment Show) is South Korea’s premier showcase for the global broadcasting industry.

Studer exhibited with HARMAN’s South Korea distributor Dongyang Digital Co., Ltd. at KOBA 2014 at the COEX Exhibition Center, Seoul, South Korea, Booth C210 (May 20 – 23, 2014).

“At KOBA 2014, attendees had a unique opportunity to experience the new Vista X,” said Myoung-Ho Seo, Director of Technical Sales for Dongyang Digital. “It is a remarkable advancement in large-scale broadcast console technology that gives broadcast professionals far greater mixing and production capabilities than ever before—and by a wide margin.”

At the heart of the Vista X is the Studer Infinity processing engine, which uses CPU-based processors to provide huge numbers of DSP channels for large-scale, high-resolution audio processing and mixing. Thanks to the Infinity core, this is the first time more than 800 audio channels have been processed in a single CPU-based board. The Vista X includes 12 A-Link high-capacity fiber digital audio interfaces, to provide more than 5,000 inputs and outputs.

The Vista X shares many features with the Vista 5 M3 and Vista 1 consoles that were featured at KOBA, including the company’s patented Vistonics™ color touchscreen interface, FaderGlow™ enabling faders to be color-coded according to function, flexible input routing and many additional features that make Studer Vista consoles the most powerful and versatile in the industry.

Also on show was the Studer OnAir Series 3000 consoles, a complete lineup of compact, flexible boards that offer a host of useful high-end features that are ideal for smaller, medium and larger radio and TV studios.
