Alford Media Invests in the Future With Martin Audio MLA

Originally founded in 1984 by Steve and Tom Alford, Alford Media is a Dallas-Fort Worth area-based company that specializes in staging high-end corporate events throughout the U.S. and around the world.

Asked about the company’s criteria for choosing a new speaker system as part of an equipment upgrade, Manager of Audio Services John Caswell said, “We’ve been using another system for about 11 years and wanted to take it up several notches to offer our customers a high end solution that could stay on the cutting-edge of technology for years to come.

“We demoed many of the top lines before talking to some of our freelancers who’d used the Martin Audio MLA System and had a lot of good things to say about it. Tom Alford spoke with Mario Educate, CEO and founder of On Stage Audio, who strongly recommended that we listen to the system before making a final decision.

“That got us listening to MLA,” John continues, “discussing the product and the technology in terms of a loudspeaker system that’s still going to be ahead of the curve many years from now. When we looked where Martin Audio was headed with MLA, we felt it would be the longest-term solution and stay well ahead of other companies technologically. This explains why we made the decision.”

Declaring that Alford Media is “glad to be part of the MLA family,” Caswell affirms how impressed they were when his team first demoed MLA at a Walmart show at the Orlando Convention Center. “This is one of the biggest and most acoustically challenging convention centers in the country, which truly helped demonstrate MLA in its element. We were extremely impressed with the results on that show, and so was our client. The system covered the areas it was supposed to cover with a balance across the spectrum. The ability to control sound and quickly achieve optimization was what sold us on MLA.”

Alford initially opted for a system comprised of 32 MLA Compact, 32 MLA Mini, 18 DSX and 8 MSX subs. Taking delivery early, the audio team quickly had half of the system hanging in the MGM Grand for a corporate focus group event and the other half on a truck headed to San Antonio for a Pizza Hut show.

According to John, “Initial feedback from our audio team was that the system was covering exceptionally well and had more horsepower than we needed for these events. Overall, when you factor in the system’s cutting-edge technology, product cycle longevity, superior performance and exceptional audio quality, the reasons for choosing Martin Audio MLA just go on and on.”

Lighting Designer Jason Liggett Goes Interactive with grandMA2 light On Innovative Mike Gordon Tour

It’s certainly not your grandma’s jamband tour. Nevertheless a grandMA2 light, manned by lighting designer Jason Liggett, is critical to band-audience interaction on Phish bassist Mike Gordon’s solo tour in support of his album, “Overstep.” A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of the MA Lighting in North America.

Gordon has conceived the show as something of an interactive art installation. One of his gags to encourage audience participation is a massive digital keyboard, called the EEL, stretching across the front of the stage. It has 55 keys and, at certain points in the show, the EEL illuminates and catches the attention of concertgoers in the front of house. Then it goes mostly dark with only a few keys remaining lit or active. Fans instinctively reach out to touch them and when they do they hear a bass, a snare drum, a piano. As they start to tap the keys the sounds take on the rhythm of the song played onstage and the fans get about 30 seconds to jam with the band.

‘For two bars we’re playing, then for two bars we go quiet and the audience plays, then for another two bars we play something that complements what they just did, and so on,” Gordon has said. “We’re having a duel with the audience.”

Liggett, who heads Liggy Lighting Design LLC, has been a grandMA user since 2009. He transitioned to the grandMA2 for Gordon’s tour “for its power and ability to handle anything externally and trigger devices,” he says. “The ability to create MIDI triggers is great on that system.”

The lighting designer worked with Andy Cass (http://www.andycass.com/) to tie in MIDI components with lighting and video elements. “Any of the commands running from the EEL goes through MIDI and the grandMA2 while I’m running the lights. It amazed me how easy it was to set up MIDI on the grandMA2 and get everything to talk nice.”

Liggett uses between three and five universes per show, plus MIDI. “It’s been great,” he reports. “I’ve fallen in love with the layout view in the grandMA2. And the cloning is amazing. Using the layout view and cloning together I’ve cut hours and hours from my focus time in production.”

He also gives kudos to the system’s converter. “I’ve been able to bring over all the effects I’ve created since 2009,” he says. “I really appreciate that. This board does it all for me, and I feel like I’m just scratching the surface. A.C.T Lighting has been great in supporting the grandMA2 as well.”

Atomic Pro Audio provided the grandMA2 light for Liggett. BML provided all lighting and video gear.

New Yamaha Amplifiers Added to CIS Product Line

LAS VEGAS—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. will launch two new amplifiers at InfoComm 2014 that will add to the growing number of Commercial Installations Solutions (CIS) products. The user-friendly UI of the MA2030/PA2030 are based on years of experience developing AV products and musical instruments.

At a targeted MSRP of $399, the MA2030 mixer amplifier, available in the summer of 2014, provides functionality not normally seen in products at this price point. World-renowned DSP technology allows product features such as Priority Ducking, Feedback Reduction, Auto Leveling, Speaker Processing, and simple remote connectivity. The MA2030 is the only mixer amp in its class that provides a low-cost optional DCP1V1S wall controller panel connected over a common Cat5 cable for simple user control without having to access the amplifier. The DCP mounts in a standard single gang wall box and provides one knob and four switches.

The PA2030 can easily provide more power by adding two more 30-watt channels to the MA2030 and also works great as a low-cost, high or low impedance amplifier. Reliable Yamaha quality and a “green” and silent design equipped with a highly efficient class-D circuit with a fan-less cooling design, the PA2030 will be available at an MSRP of $299 in the summer of 2014.

“When we originally introduced the CIS product line, we knew it was only a first step in bringing great value, Yamaha reliability, and technology features to the market, states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems. Inc. The tradition continues with the addition of these two new products.”

The MA2030 mixer amp features three stereo line inputs (two RCA, one Mini-Stereo plug), two mic inputs (one Euro Block, one combination XLR/phone jack), one Stereo output (RCA), two amplifier outputs (2×30 watts at high impedance, 70v or 100v, or low impedance from 3 to 8 ohms), and one DCP control port (RJ45 supports one DCP1V4S with power and control).

The PA2030 power amp has two stereo line input options (RCA and Euro Block), two amplifier outputs (2×30 watts at high impedance, 70v or 100v, or low impedance from 3 to 8 ohms).

Devoted Fans Celebrate 311 Day with Five Hours of Music and Lighting From HARMAN’s Martin Professional

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Devoted 311 fans swarmed to New Orleans this year for the ultimate celebratory concert experience on March 11, better known as 311 Day. Showcasing a culmination of 11 albums, including their most recent studio album released earlier this year, titled Stereolithic, HARMAN’s Martin Professional Atomic 3000 DMX strobes (10) and M6 lighting console were deployed by Joe Paradise, Lighting Designer.

311, an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska formed in 1988, created 311 Day in 2000 when the band played 47 songs straight. Since then, the band has consistently increased its set list, including over five-and-a-half hours of music this year.

“The biggest challenge is being able to program at a high rate of speed and to be able to have most of the songs programmed ‘cue to cue’,” Paradise said about the M6 console. “I have used Martin consoles since the Maxxyz lighting console came out and have always been impressed with the ease of programming and how simple but diverse the effects engine is.”

“I switched to the M1 because of how solid it is and the familiar syntax and since then have chosen the M6 for the same reason. I really do enjoy the larger format and the numerous playbacks. I am really happy with how modular it is and I really enjoy the variety of playback placement types as well as the playback options. The touch screens are really easy on the eyes but vivid and very accurate. It just keeps getting better!”

On this particular show, Paradise had Martin’s M1 console standing by as a network backup console, but it was never needed. “The goal was to make this a very special event for hardcore fans of 311,” Paradise stated. “I wanted to make the show look a lot larger than it was and make the audience feel as though they were part of it as opposed to just being there. The M6 console makes getting what you see in your mind’s eye to the fixtures very simple and effortless.”

Paradise, who has used just about every Martin fixture since the MAC 250s and 300s came out, utilized the Atomic strobes to create diverse effects for the audience. “The crowd really responded to some of the looks and gags we put together and everyone walked away very happy! It was a great experience and I always enjoy using Martin to showcase my vision.”

FUJIFILM to Showcase All PL 4K and Cabrio Cine-Style Lenses at Hollywood’s Cine Gear Expo 2014

Wayne, N.J. – The Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation will showcase its entire range of Premier PL 4K+ cine lenses and the Cabrio cine/ENG-Style lens series at the Cine Gear Expo 2014, being held from June 5-8 at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood.

The Premier PL 4K+ Series features the fastest T speeds available in a family of zooms, with unprecedented color matched 4K and beyond optical performance. The entire range of Premier PL 4K+ cine lenses will be in the booth. The 14.5-45mm T2.0, 18-85mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400mm T2.8-T3.8 will all be on display. All four PL Mount zooms are similar in size and weight, and uniform gear placement and front barrel diameters (136mm). Focus, zoom, and iris gears are all in the same position—which speeds up lens changes, since follow focus accessories and lens motors can stay in the same position on the rods. Focus barrel rotation is a uniform 280 degrees on all four zooms.

Premier PL 4K lenses have been used by several acclaimed DPs for feature films including Life of Pi, Oblivion and Iron Man 3.

The latest addition to its popular series of cine zooms – the FUJINON Premier PL 25-300mm Cabrio [ZK12x25], introduced in April at the NAB show – will be on hand with the rest of the Cabrio series at Cine Gear. Equipped with a 35mm PL mount, the PL 25-300mm boasts a high zoom ratio covering the focal length of 25mm to 300mm. The PL 25-300mm supports an optional, detachable servo drive for electric zooming, focusing and iris. Mounting the unit enables remote control of zoom, focus, and iris adjustment.

FUJINON’s popular Cabrio series includes the new PL 25-300mm (model ZK 12×25), PL 19-90 (model ZK4.7×19), PL 85-300 (model ZK3.5×85) and PL 14-28mm (model ZK2x14). The PL 19-90, PL 85-300, and PL 14-28 Cabrio feature exclusive detachable servo drive units, making them suitable for use as a standard PL lens or as an ENG-style lens. And they can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

Designed using the latest proprietary optical simulation software, the entire range of Cabrio lenses offer exceptional optical performance in the center of the image and in the corners of the frame. The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—including the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate. The zooms support Lens Data System (LDS) and /i Technology metadata formats, and can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

The PL 25-300, PL 19-90, PL 85-300, and PL 14-28mm FUJINON lenses are equipped with flange focal distance adjustment, a macro function for extreme close-up focus, and coverage of a 31.5mm diagonal sensor.

Cabrio lenses are being used in TV series and feature film production, including several 3D features currently in production.

“Cine Gear is a thriving show attended by some of our most loyal customers,” said Thom Calabro, director, marketing and product development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. “We always look forward to connecting with them and meeting potential new users during Cine Gear. It continually draws an audience of key decision makers in entertainment production, and we’re eager to show off our 4K and Cabrio zooms this year.”

This year marks FUJIFILM’s 80th anniversary, and 40 years for the Optical Devices Division, formerly known as FUJINON, in the U.S.
