The company’s W1070 was the top-selling home entertainment projector in the U.S. retail channel in 2013, while the latest Colorific projectors have allowed BenQ to rank as the No. 3 overall projector brand in North America. On a global basis, BenQ has sustained its No. 2 standing as overall projector brand. According to PMA Research, DLP has been the projector market’s leading technology over the past four years.

“PMA’s latest report solidifies BenQ’s leadership position as a value-added provider of customer-centric digital lifestyle innovations,” said Bob Wudeck, Associate Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at BenQ America Corp. “Our outstanding customer base has truly responded to BenQ’s unique combination of dependable performance, industry-first features, and consumer-friendly pricing. Toledo’s Hollywood Casino chooses RCF/dB Technologies system for Summer Nights Concert Series

(Edison, New Jersey) This is the second year for The Hollywood Casino in Toledo, Ohio Spotlight Summer Nights series of concerts in an open-air amphitheater setting on the banks of the Ohio River. Scheduled headliners for the series include Smokey Robinson, .38 Special, Night Ranger, Travis Tritt, Wilson Phillips, George Thorogood, Pat Benatar, Everclear, Soul Asylum, Chevelle and Robby Krieger’s Jam Kitchen.
Amphitheater may not be quite the right description as the grounds are a re-purposed parking lot with temporary staging and seating, and an interstate running behind it, calling for an increased need for proper sound control and reproduction.
Their choice for sound reinforcement – RCF line arrays with dB Technologies subwoofers and monitors. This is a joint venture between the casino and Toledo-based Great Lakes Sound, Inc. The system is comprised of 8 RCF TTL33-A active three-way cabinets flown per side along with 8 dB Technologies DVA-S30N dual 18” subwoofers. For sidefills, Parks added one RCF 4PRO 6001 three-way cabinet coupled with one dB Technologies DVA-S20DP subwoofer per side. dB Technologies DVX DM15 active monitors cover the stage.
Great Lakes Sound owner Bill Robison notes, “on delivery day the system was rigged and immediately put to the test,” and quickly realized, “what this PA was capable of. The dB Technologies DVA-S30S subwoofers do a great job and are a perfect compliment to the system as well.
“The system is quick and easy to install. Also, because all of the boxes in the system are powered, our normal footprint is greatly reduced. This is nice because it’s a pretty cozy venue in terms of backstage and wing space.”
Regarding comments from the performers, Robison says, “So far, all of the travelling engineers who have mixed on the system have had pleasant things to say about the RCF and dB Technologies package.”
The system will once again provide reinforcement for a wide variety of rock, R&B, and country acts this year.
As the system is flown on a temporary basis for the shows, the fact it features RDNet is a critical component as they system literally gets set up the day of the show using a StageLine trailer for the summer events. RDNet is RCF’s RS-485 proprietary protocol allowing for monitoring of all system components and control of system parameters. As the rig is flown for the show, all components including on-board amplifiers and each individual transducer can be tested to be in proper working order. And, with RDNet control, Parks is able to meet with the performer’s front-of-house engineer during rehearsal walk-through and apply any necessary changes needed in the system quickly to meet the artist’s sound requirements.

Equipment list:
FOH: (16) RCF TTL33A, (8) dB Technologies DVA-S30N subwoofers
Sidefill: (2) RCF 4PRO 6001A, (2) dB Technologies DVA-S20DP
Monitors: (13) dB Technologies DVA DM15, (1) dB Technologies DVA-S10DP

Tightrope Media Systems Helps Binghamton High School Spread the News Through Digital Signage

Using Tightrope’s Carousel solution, school district communicates news, events and more across multiple platforms to the benefit of students, faculty and parents

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, June 9, 2014
– The Binghamton School District in the central-southern tier of New York State has discovered a way to communicate clearly with high school students, faculty and parents at once, creatively using digital signage technology from Tightrope Media Systems to deliver information inside the school and over the web.

Branded as Patriot TV, the school district rotates morning announcements with regular updated information on school events, weather and more to nearly every space in the Binghamton High School, reaching 1700 students across grades 9-12. Using Tightrope’s Carousel digital signage solution, the IT-centric architecture allows the school to broadcast feeds on classroom SMART Boards and large monitors situated inside the cafeteria and within common areas.

Additionally, Patriot TV feeds are replicated 24/7 on the school’s website, easily accessible from the front page. This has the added benefit of giving parents an easy way to keep up with district news, school closings and other important information.

“We were really looking to simplify how the greater community accessed this information,” said Roxie Oberg, Principal at Binghamton High School. “We wanted to provide a better experience than going to our website and navigating through a bunch of pages. The Tightrope system puts everything in one place, in a visually appealing and easy-to-comprehend manner. The community is learning about a lot of our activities through the Patriot TV web stream.”

This multiplatform approach was the driving influence behind adopting digital signage as opposed to more traditional methods. An initial plan of launching a basic, traditional TV broadcast for morning announcements quickly transitioned to digital signage when its benefits of reaching wider audiences became clear. And of all solutions explored, Lawrence Kassan, Coordinator of Special Events for the Binghamton City School District felt Tightrope offered the best mix for creativity, content management and price point. Though Carousel supports unlimited screen zones, The Patriot TV output consists of four discrete zones and a constant data crawl of the morning announcements.

“The whole school doesn’t go quiet the minute the morning announcements come on, and we realized we could reach students and faculty all day through a rotational digital signage program,” said Kassan. “The Carousel system gives us a very creative template to produce a dynamic output. Integration with SMART Boards means that teachers can easily show Patriot TV feeds in the classroom when they are not using them for instruction. And it has added to the overall school atmosphere as well. The students are constantly looking at the big display screens. There is a noticeable element of excitement.”

Ease of use is another major benefit, according to Kassan. Time-sensitive content is often added on the fly, though a rich scheduling function supports long-term planning. Though Kassan currently handles all Carousel operations, the quick learning curve will allow him to train students and other faculty members heading into the 2014-15 school year. Carousel’s user rights and permissions will help him facilitate the types of bulletins that can be created, screen areas that users can access, and advance content approval.

The opportunity to train other departments to use Carousel is especially pertinent given the school’s reputation as a creative force. In fact, the high school boasts a school of the arts named after Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, who graduated from the school in 1943.

“The Rod Serling School of Fine Arts produces a tremendous amount of events covering theater, dance, concerts and more,” said Kassan. “Our visual arts department has an excellent graphics arts department. It’s a natural fit to have these faculty members and students contribute to Patriot TV. And the easy learning curve of Carousel makes that a no-brainer.”

Kassan also expects to integrate the athletics department into the Patriot TV rotation, alerting the community about game schedules, results and other interesting sports highlights.

Alcorn McBride is on a Roll – the High Roller – in Las Vegas

The aptly named High Roller, the world’s tallest observation wheel, has opened in Las Vegas where it serves as the focal point of The LINQ, the innovative shopping, dining and entertainment district on the Las Vegas Strip developed by Caesars Entertainment. The 550-foot tall wheel has 28 glass-enclosed cabins that hold up to 40 passengers each. The 30-minute ride, scheduled day and night, offers unparalleled views of the Strip and surrounding valley. The experience includes a dynamic video and music show that fades away as the wheel ascends along with a colorful nighttime light show. Running behind the scenes is a full suite of Alcorn McBride gear.

“It was a challenge to work with a system spread over a 550-foot tall wheel and a 30-minute ride,” says Kevin M. Ruud, a consultant with Design Horizons who served as the design engineer and programmer for the High Roller, the pre-ride building and The LINQ. “It took a lot of rides for us to get all the cues and programming worked out. The programming was especially complex with 28 different timelines for the cabins running simultaneously. We knew the only gear that could handle this accurately and reliably was Alcorn McBride.”

When visitors arrive at the wheel’s pre-ride building they meet Lucas, the narrator of the High Roller experience. Two Alcorn McBride A/V Binloop HD units feed monitors throughout the facility. In the security area, visitors see five consecutive portrait-mode monitors where Lucas’s image is locked together and interacts with five different feeds of himself. In the reception and bar areas sets of monitors feature graphics and pricing for the ride. A photo area allows visitors to get their pictures taken with the wheel.

The departure concourse houses a 270º curved screen measuring 121 x 13 feet. Six video projectors display a giant, edge-blended image across the screen offering a glimpse of the adventure to come. Moving lights enhance the space and a 12-channel plus subwoofer sound system delivers the audio. An additional screen is over the ride entrance that leads out to the platform. All of the imagery and audio are run from Alcorn McBride V16 Pro and LightCue Pro systems.

Each cabin on the High Roller has a dedicated V16 Pro and A/V Binloop HD, which feed eight monitors wrapped above the windows of the cabin. They display content relevant to the position of the wheel at that moment, such as what sights visitors are seeing and how high in the air the wheel is; a celebratory piece displays when they reach the zenith of the ride. Dedicated AM4 units in each cabin play background music and announcements. All 28 cabins talk back to another V16 Pro on the platform that sends information to each cabin when the wheel is rotating.

When visitors finish riding the High Roller they can stroll along the quarter-mile LINQ, which features a sound system along its entire length. A V16 Pro runs the time-of-day routines, sets levels and adjusts music types. Announcements are run through an AM4, controlled by the V16 Pro.

“I’ve had experience with Alcorn McBride products and have found them to be reliable and cost effective – just what we needed for the High Roller and the LINQ,” says Ruud. “The people at Alcorn are always great to work with, too. They’re always available and more than willing to help.”

Content for the High Roller attraction was created by the Hettema Group. Hettema Group was also responsible for the design of the wheel, cabins and the building entry. The installation was performed by National Technology Associates; the cabins and cells were built by Leitner-Poma of America, Inc. Building wiring was done by Bombard Electric.
