Miley Cyrus with Sennheiser Digital 9000 on Bangerz tour

Old Lyme, Conn., June 23, 2014 – Miley Cyrus is currently on tour with her fourth and definitely most controversial album to date, Bangerz. Having comprehensively ditched the Disney image of her teenage years – although not the purity of her voice which is dominant all the way through the album – Bangerz exhibits influences that shift dramatically between pop, hip-hop, funk, country, R&B and dance. The tour is equally eclectic and outrageous, featuring a giant hot dog, a troupe of dancing furry animals and cartoon characters, foam fingers and some very skimpy costumes amongst other things. High-energy and steeped in self-mockery, there is never a dull moment. Critics have been largely very positive, appreciating her vocal performance, audacity and charisma, with one critic from Time magazine calling her one of the “most dynamic performers of her generation”. On this tour, and for the first time, Cyrus is performing with the new Digital 9000 microphone system from Sennheiser.

Despite the change of image and musical direction of recent years, Cyrus has remained faithful to key members of her technical team, in particular monitor engineer Vish Wadi and FoH engineer Paul David Hager. Both have been working with Cyrus (and Sennheiser) for a number of years. Wadi’s relationship with Sennheiser goes back some 17 years, while Hager has been working with Sennheiser since he engineered the Goo Goo Dolls tour in 2005.

“Miley had been using an SKM 5200 handheld transmitter with a 5235 capsule which was a great combination for her – very robust and sounded good — but Paul [Hager] and I were really keen to try out the digital system,” explained Wadi. “When we did, we both fell in love with the sound quality and the innovative RF capabilities, so we decided to move Miley over to the Digital 9000 system for this tour. She is using an SKM 9000 handheld transmitter with the MD 9235 capsule, and it sounds fantastic!”

Wadi noted that FoH engineer Paul David Hager was a significant driving force of the desire to move over to digital. “If anything, it was even more important for him than it was for me because Paul is using digital outputs, and therefore wanted a fully digital workflow, whereas I am using analogue outputs because I think it works better for monitors, especially in-ears. That said, there has definitely been an overall improvement in sound quality, and the other major bonus is that it just makes life so much easier for all of us in terms of setup and operation. The frequency scanner is a real time-saver and once you’ve understood how it all works, it’s just a dream to work with.”

Hager is in complete agreement, and made particular reference to the Digital 9000’s unique, completely uncompressed digital transmission. “The difference in sound quality is measurable,” he said. “The wireless sounds much more natural without all the companding that was previously a feature of wireless systems. As a result, the 9000 doesn’t have that typical “wireless mic” sound – in fact, it almost sounds just like a cabled mic. Also, it can handle great distances without dropout, which for a major tour like Miley, where we’re in huge venues with massive stages, is a significant plus point. The other feature I love is the choice of AES outs right into my console for the cleanest possible signal chain – no messing around with any extraneous signal converters, it’s just direct from mic to console.”

“It’s also simplified things for me in terms of workflow,” continued Hager. “The fact that Miley and her background singers now sound so much more natural than before means that I don’t have to EQ nearly as much. The other thing that I love is having a range of heads for the mic so that I can find the right one for her voice. The downside is that we’re now spoiled for anything else – having used the Digital 9000, it’s going to be hard to go back to any other wireless system!”

Both engineers have been working with Sennheiser for some time, but Wadi in particular has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with the company. “My first contact with Sennheiser was in 1997 when I was trying to find a mic for Mariah [Carey],” he recalls. I came across the 5000 Series and talked to Greg Beebe [now President of SEC, the wholly-owned US subsidiary of Sennheiser]. He sorted me out for Mariah, and we became friends. Some years later, I needed a mic for Sting, and again, Sennheiser was the only company that really reacted and cooperated with me to develop the product I was looking for. In fact, the e865 dynamic cardioid mic was a direct result of that project. Since then, I’ve been involved in road-testing new gear and giving feedback whenever I can.”

“I think Sennheiser is a great company because despite their size and prominence in the market, they are still a family-run company, and those “family values” are definitely a defining factor in the attitudes of their workforce. You get an incredibly personal service wherever you are in the world — which is enormously reassuring, and from a technical and developmental point of view, they are always a step ahead of the crowd. The result is that you get to deal with great people AND great products. What could be better than that?”

The Sennheiser Group, with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. In 2012 the family company, which was founded in 1945, achieved a turnover of around 584 million euros. Sennheiser employs more than 2,300 people worldwide, and has manufacturing plants in Germany, Ireland and the USA. The company is represented worldwide by subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Germany, Denmark (Nordic), Russia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as by long-term trading partners in many other countries. Also part of the Sennheiser Group are Georg Neumann GmbH, Berlin (studio microphones and monitor loudspeakers), and the joint venture Sennheiser Communications A/S (headsets for PCs, offices and call centres).

Music Marcom Marks 10th Year

PR & Marketing agency serves over 50 music companies over the past decade, looks to the future

Phoenix, AZ (June 23, 2014) – Music Marcom (www.musicmarcom.com) is celebrating 10 years in business in 2014. During that time, the company has successfully provided marketing communications services to over 50 musical instrument, professional audio, and music technology companies as well as recording facilities and audio industry professionals.

Combining their collective PR and marketing experience from such companies as Guitar Center, Magix Entertainment, SDI Media, Steinberg Media Technologies and Fender Musical Instruments, Brian and Martina McConnon founded Music Marcom in 2004. “We actually met at the NAMM show in Anaheim, California,” points out Brian McConnon. “We have different, but complimentary skills sets that allow us to cover a lot of ground for our clients.”

The vision was to provide small to mid-size companies a menu of expert marketing and communications services as an alternative to an expensive in-house department. By keeping Music Marcom focused and specialized, they are able to provide a tremendous value for their clients. “As we ramped up, we found this formula fit a wide range of situations, from start-ups that need the entire portfolio of marketing services, to mid-size companies that need product launch or tradeshow support, and large corporations that need focused and targeted PR,” says Martina McConnon.

Kim Pfluger, PR and Events Manager for iZotope, Inc. said, “iZotope has had the pleasure of working with Music Marcom since the very beginning. Their focus, attention to detail, and assertiveness continue to build our brand in the Pro Audio, MI, and Post Production industries, as well as new industries and geographic locations. Up for anything, they deliver great results with a positive attitude, fostering close relationships with the media on iZotope’s behalf.”

As the industry has evolved, so too has the way Music Marcom markets their clients’ products and brands. “The shift to digital media has created more opportunities to engage customers, but it has also fragmented the landscape into specific interests and preferences,” adds McConnon. “We help clients plan and implement traditional PR and marketing strategies with modern digital, social, and content marketing strategies for a completely integrated approach.”

“We have been working with Music Marcom for the last five years to help us gain better product recognition of our musician oriented publications in the MI space,” said John Cerullo, Group Publisher, Hal Leonard Performing Arts Publishing Group. “They have done an amazing job augmenting our in-house efforts, which is exactly what we needed when we started this relationship. Brian and Martina have been wonderful to work with and are very engaged with both our publications and authors. This makes all the difference in the end results. We look forward to working with them well into the future.”

Masque Sound Brings the Powerful and Influential Lyrics of Tupac Shakur to the Stage in Holler if ya Hear Me

Custom Audio Equipment Package Keeps the Beat for First Hip-Hop Musical in Broadway History

NEW YORK, JUNE 23, 2014 – As the curtain rose and the beat dropped on Broadway, the rhymes of Tupac Shakur engulfed the Palace Theatre during the highly anticipated hip-hop musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. Sound Designers David Patridge and John Shivers turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to provide a custom audio equipment package for the riveting new production.

Holler If Ya Hear Me transports audiences to the world inside Tupac Shakur’s lyrics, and blazes to life in a non-biographical story about friendship, family, revenge, change and hope. The production brings to light the struggles for peace against the daily challenges of inner city life in this entertaining and original musical. Through the poetry of one of the 20th century’s most influential and culturally prominent voices, audiences are given a window into realities of the street, which are still relevant today.

Unlike a typical musical, which focuses mainly on reinforcing the audio coming off the stage, Patridge and Shivers’ goal in designing the sound for Holler If Ya Hear Me was to not only reinforce but amplify the audio to bring it to a level that was much more impactful. To do so, they worked with Masque Sound to obtain a custom equipment package, which included a DiGiCo SD7T Live Digital Console, d&b audiotechnik V-Series line array system, d&b D80 amplifiers and a Yamaha PM5D-EX digital console. The performers were outfitted with Sennheiser SK5212-II radios and EM 3732-II receivers, as well as DPA d:fine microphone booms fitted with a 4066 element.

“This was the first time that we used the d&b V-Series and D80 amplifiers and we were very impressed. The PA system needed to have more volume than a typical Broadway show in order to adhere to the punchy, hip hop score,” says Patridge. “The capacity and quality of the d&b D80 amplifiers was excellent. Working in an older theater also presented its challenges, architecturally speaking. We needed a line array system that was compact enough to fit the space, not block sight lines and not weigh too much; the V-Series was the perfect choice. Masque Sound went above and beyond in purchasing an abundance of high-end equipment for us, because the team knew that it was necessary for a show of this caliber. We are very appreciative that they were willing to go that extra mile to help bring our vision to life.”

The designers called upon two different d&b models in order to more evenly disperse the audio throughout the theatre. “We put the 120 degree boxes at the bottom of the array and had the narrower pattern going further distances, so when the audio opens up, it keeps some of the energy off the walls of the room,” adds Patridge. “When designing for sonic signature, you have to look at everything—it has to sound good, be coherent, be able to control the pattern and it has to have power. The d&b PA that Masque Sound provided allowed us to do just that.”

The location of the mix position also presented a unique challenge for the designers. The seating of the Palace Theatre is configured with a continuous slope, which provides a stadium seating effect instead of the traditional separate levels (orchestra, mezzanine and balcony). As a result of the angle of the chairs, the FOH mixer cannot see the actors on stage, as he would have to look through the console.

“Not having a good line of sight can be quite a challenge, so we incorporated a video monitor system into the design,” says Patridge. “As a one-stop shop, Masque Sound was able to supply the video component that we needed to overcome this unexpected challenge.”

In addition to his praise of Masque Sound, Patridge also credits his long-time production engineer Kevin Kennedy for a job well done. “The sound turned out great, and we are really excited and thankful to be part of this history-making musical,” concludes Patridge.

Holler If Ya Hear Me opened on June 19, 2014 at the Palace Theatre. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit: www.hollerifyahearme.com.

EDEN HIGH SCHOOL PUMPS UP HOME GAMES WITH ASHLY GEAR

EDEN, NEW YORK – JUNE 2014: Eden High School graduated its first class in 1899, when the small town of Eden was not a suburb of Buffalo, New York, eighteen miles to the north. Since then, the high school has been consistently recognized for its academic achievement and for the tenacity of the Eden Raiders sports teams. Indeed, the girls’ volleyball team is vying for its fifth straight state championship! In addition to volleyball, the school’s 1,300+ seat gymnasium hosts home basketball games and wrestling tournaments, but until recently, its sound reinforcement system was underpowered and frequently unintelligible. Harvey Electric and Sound of nearby Hamburg, New York designed and installed an abundantly powered and highly-intelligible sound reinforcement system using an Ashly nX-Series amplifier and a ne-Series processor.

“The previous system wasn’t particularly old, it just didn’t meet the needs of the space,” explained Greg Harvey, owner of Harvey Electric and Sound. “The Eden All Sports Boosters raised the funds for a replacement because it was so obvious to everyone that a vast improvement was needed. The system couldn’t overcome a cheering crowd, and even when everyone was quiet, it was still difficult to understand what was being said.”

The inputs to the system are simple and a mere update from the previous system: a new Shure wireless microphone, a new Shure announcer microphone, and an auxiliary input. It’s what happens after that point that makes all the difference. The inputs feed an Ashly ne4400 4-in x 4-out Protea™ DSP System Processor. “The old system was a simple mixer-amp, and the Ashly ne4400 is a vast improvement,” said Harvey. “It gave us the ability to shape the sound with compression, limiting, equalization, and filtering. We also gave them feedback suppression modules on the microphone inputs.”

Outputs from the ne4400 feed a four-channel Ashly nX 1.54 amplifier, which packs four channels of 1500W output into just two rack spaces. “This is our first experience with Ashly’s nX-Series amplifiers, and we chose the nX 1.54 for its tremendous output capacity,” said Harvey. “It sounds great and delivers as promised.” Right now, only two of the amplifier channels are in use. They power two EAW VFR159i loudspeakers, which will be doubled for the other side of the room once the funds become available. The remaining two channels on the Ashly nX 1.54 will power them.

An Ashly WR-5 wall-mounted remote control gives users simple control over input gains and overall volume. Once the system expands to four cabinets, Harvey will reprogram the WR-5 to allow preset selection for different types of events as well. “We went with Ashly for a couple of reasons,” he said. “Ashly’s rep firm in the area, Eaton Sales, does a great job. We’ve worked with them for twenty years. Ashly’s pricing is very competitive, but they don’t make a cheap product. The processors and amplifiers sound great and are very functional and rugged. This is the second installation of Ashly Audio products at Eden High School and we are confident that they will have great sound systems for a long, long time.”

ABOUT ASHLY AUDIO Ashly Audio Inc. is recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high quality & high performance signal processing equipment and power amplification for use in the commercial sound contracting and professional audio markets. The 40-year old company is headquartered in Webster, New York U.S.A.

Linear Launches Intelligent Three-Way Z-Wave Light Switch

Unlike most three-way switches that require a traveler wire, this smart switch can be installed just about anywhere there’s AC power

Carlsbad, CA – June 23, 2014 – Leading security and home automation, access control, and health and wellness manufacturer for residential and commercial markets, Linear LLC today announced the launch of its 3-way Z-Wave® smart switch, model WT00Z™.   The new Z-Wave smart switch allows remote ON/OFF control and dimming of as many as five other Z-Wave controlled lights, and adds another intelligent control solution to Linear’s Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio.  Linear, including its 2GIG® brand of products, is the largest user of Z-Wave chipsets in the world.

The Linear® WT00Z™ smart switch gives professional security and home automation installers an invaluable tool by offering a desirable home control lighting function that previously was either not possible or practical.  Because the Linear 3-way smart switch does not directly control a load, it can serve as a virtual 3-way switch and be wired anywhere power is available, without the need for a traveler wire.  When paired with a 2GIG® Go!Control® system, or other brand of home automation controller, the 3-way Z-Wave smart switch offers simple control of one, two or as many as five other lights, making it easy for consumers to quickly illuminate or extinguish lights with a simple flip of a nearby wall switch.

“This new 3-way Z-Wave switch is extremely important to our portfolio of connected devices.  It solves a vexing problem for installers, while bolstering the capabilities and value of the Go!Control® automation panels they install.  Controlling a light from two locations is a convenience most people have come to expect, but anyone who’s done electrical wiring knows it’s not always that simple,” said Duane Paulson, senior vice president of product and market development for Linear.  “This new Z-Wave smart switch makes it easy.  This is another example of our commitment to bring smarter products to market that add convenience, while enhancing the value of our 2GIG® home control platform, which continues to accelerate in popularity.”

Linear is also a principal member of the Z-Wave Alliance.  “Z-Wave is at the heart of the world’s largest ecosystem of interoperable smart products, and it will continue to grow. Our partnership is stronger than ever and we remain committed to bringing innovative, intelligent Z-Wave control solutions to the residential and commercial markets,” continued Paulson.

Z-Wave® is an international wireless standard for intelligent, interoperable, low-power, RF mesh networking technology. This powerful smart chip and compact protocol enable two-way RF communications among Z-Wave enabled devices. Linear is now manufacturing, selling and distributing Z-Wave lighting control products that include: wall dimmers, wall switches, wall outlets, lamp modules, appliance modules, 3-way switches/dimmers, fixture modules, as well as international versions of the same products plus other Z-Wave enabled security and convenience devices. Linear also has the capability to utilize its extensive OEM experience to manufacture Z-Wave products for partner companies seeking their own intelligent lighting solutions.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — June 19, 2014 – Quantum Corp. (NYSE:QTM) today announced that Alex Grossman, the company’s vice president of Media and Entertainment, will serve as a keynote speaker at the 2014 Creative Storage(TM) Conference on June 24 in Culver City, California. His presentation, “The Smarter Cloud for Media: More Than Compute and Storage — True Post and Broadcast Production Workflow,” will examine how the cloud can help content creators remain competitive as they address new workflow challenges in content production and delivery while enabling broader collaboration and improved efficiency.

“Content creators in broadcast and post production are under extreme pressure to remain competitive and efficient, even as they embrace higher resolutions such as 4K, new camera formats, a growing range of delivery options, and increasingly distributed collaborative production and approval models,” said Grossman. “Together, these factors push the limits of traditional content delivery and post-production workflow strategies, as well as the underlying infrastructure that powers these systems. Choosing the right cloud workflow can enable businesses to offload these pressures and become more flexible and agile in completing creative projects.”

During his keynote, Grossman will pose basic questions about today’s workflows, how they have changed, and the challenges that businesses face in handling remote users, multiple facilities, and the need to accept and deliver content from and to various partners and clients. He will examine issues associated with moving content across organizations — touching on replication, collaborative access, version control, and security — and then look at the cloud and discuss best practices for its use in supporting creative workflows.

Attendees will learn how to choose the correct cloud infrastructure, how the cloud can enable globally dispersed teams to collaborate in real time on creative projects for faster time to market and improved efficiency, and how the cloud can provide a scalable solution for meeting changing levels of demand during the post-production process. The presentation will also outline how the cloud can provide greater security and integrity in content management while allowing users to optimize prior investments and preserve future flexibility.

Grossman has more than two decades of industry experience. Prior to joining Quantum, he was founder and CEO of Active Storage, a developer of media and Apple(R)-centric workflow storage solutions. Grossman previously was an executive within the Worldwide Product Marketing group at Apple, with responsibility for driving the development, marketing and management of Apple server and storage products. Earlier, he served as senior vice president of sales, marketing and new product development at MicroNet Technology Inc., a developer and manufacturer of storage solutions for creative professionals and IT managers. Grossman has contributed to several patents associated with media management and storage technology, and he led the team that developed the first FireWire(R)-based storage area network.
