Nexidia QC v2.3
At IBC2014, Nexidia will demonstrate Nexidia QC v2.3, an automated, file-based QC application that can automatically test critical components of media with proprietary technology — tests that, until now, could only be performed manually. Nexidia QC contains unique tests to verify that closed captions are not only present, but also correct in terms of content, completeness, and timing, which no other media QC application can do. Additionally, Nexidia QC can report on the presence of video descriptions and can identify the audio languages that are present with the media. Nexidia QC automates manual processes to reduce operating expenses, automatically identifies and corrects caption timing errors to avoid regulatory fines, and enables a higher-quality experience for viewers across all platforms.

Nexidia QC has an API that allows it to integrate easily into other workflow and QC applications. Version v2.3 will include several new features:
- Caption retiming
- Caption/subtitle text language verification
- Expanded caption formats supported (STL, EBU-IT, ITT)
- Language ID technology update with expanded language support
- Dialect verification

At IBC2014, Nexidia will demonstrate Dialogue Search — the world’s only software tool that searches for any spoken word or phrase, independent of metadata, across massive media libraries in seconds. The patented technology behind Dialogue Search allows media organizations to make better use of their media libraries by quickly and precisely finding unique assets that searching traditional metadata could never reveal. Dialogue Search dramatically reduces logging and transcription costs, integrates directly with media asset management (MAM) and editing applications, and requires no training. Version v1.6 will include several new features:

MPEG DVB-ASI and IPTV Monitors
Providing functionality critical for facilities migrating toward IP-oriented distribution networks, the MPEG Series monitors decode and provide convenient at-a-glance monitoring of program content from MPEG-2/4 ASI and Ethernet IP streams, as well as 3G/HD-SDI inputs. To meet broadcasters’ increasing need for stream-based monitoring, the MPEG video monitors identify, decode, and display in high resolution both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 signals (input via BNC or Ethernet) while giving users the ability to browse the PAT, PMT, PID, EIT, and NIT data (both ATSC and DVB tables) for each selected stream. In addition to MPEG ASI and dual-input 3G/HD-SDI with loop-through, the MPEG monitors also accommodate audio with level meters, GPI, and tally. Convenient monitoring capabilities include Dolby Digital and Digital+ decoding, as well as the capacity to decode as many as 12 audio groups. In-picture level metering of up to 16 channels of audio is provided for both average and PPM (peak) levels with selectable meter scales.

A turnkey closed-caption/subtitle translation solution, WohlerCaption leverages Wohler’s RadiantGrid(TM) technology to extract closed-captioning from media sources and insert closed-captioning back into the transcoded output file.

Boasting a new captioning/subtitling framework built on open standards, the solution now supports an enhanced range of input and output standards in addition to a variety of data presentations. AMP2-E16V Series Modular Audio/Video Processing Monitor
The AMP2-E16V monitor’s feature list continues to be the longest in the industry, yet the product is operated with one-touch simplicity. In addition to its top-quality audio system, it features simultaneous multiformat monitoring, quick program selection, instant stereo downmix, loudness monitoring, internal channel mixing including SDI re-embedding, and audio delays. The monitor also includes a wide variety of meter scales and ways to view meters, video, and Dolby or SMPTE 2020 metadata.

The AMP2-E16V offers Dolby Zoom, Dolby E line position, and CRC error monitoring, as well as automatic system configuration based upon signal inputs, 32 complete system configuration presets, a complete internal help system, and Ethernet software updates. Audio processor card options facilitate easy configuration for multiple SDI, AES I/O, analog I/O, and connection to external surround systems.

A new AVB Monitoring Option card allows AVB channels to be mixed, level-adjusted, and monitored alongside AES, SDI, analog, and other input types, and in the same fashion. At IBC2014, Front Porch Digital will launch DISTILL(SM) in the European market. This new solution, delivered over four simple steps — capture, process, manage, and retrieve, ensures that almost any metadata created at any stage of the content lifecycle can now be easily and effectively managed.

Metadata is a critical part of every media project, but the inflexibility of traditional IT solutions has made it difficult for media companies to leverage this data fully. Industry sources estimate that less than 5 percent of metadata created in production remains available for the full lifecycle of the content, with most being lost as the video asset is moved, transcoded, and monetized repeatedly. DISTILL allows media professionals to work with the tools they prefer while ensuring that users enterprise-wide and beyond (subject to access permissions) can leverage that critical data wherever and whenever they need it. Invisible Cities: An Opera for Headphones Receives Local Emmy® Nomination for Best Entertainment Programming

KCET’s Artbound Special Explores Creativity and Innovation Behind Visionary Experimental Opera, Made Possible with Sennheiser Audio Technology

Old Lyme, CT, July 16, 2014: Audio specialist Sennheiser announced that Invisible Cities: An Opera for Headphones has been nominated for a Los Angeles Area Emmy® Award by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Invisible Cities: An Opera for Headphones was commissioned by Sennheiser and produced by KCET, the leading independent public media organization serving Southern California, and The Industry, the L.A. based experimental opera company.

The local Emmy® Awards will be presented at the 66th Los Angeles Area Emmys Ceremony on July 26, 2014, at the Television Academy’s Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.

Invisible Cities: An Opera for Headphones [kcet.org/invisiblecities] was featured online and on-air last December in a multimedia series for KCET’s arts and culture series, Artbound. The series provided an exclusive, in-depth look at the artisitic and technological challenges that collaborators The Industry, L.A. Dance Project and Sennheiser faced in creating the world’s first large scale opera for wireless headphones. Yuval Sharon, Founder and Artistic Director of The Industry, contacted Sennheiser in early 2013 to help make the wireless opera production become a reality.

“Invisible Cities would not have been possible without Sennheiser’s support,” Sharon explains. “I actually feel like Sennheiser was a creative partner for me because it was their technology, their spirit of innovation and their love of experimentation that really gave me the confidence to create this project in the first place. The fact that they came on board at such an early stage and really wanted to support something that was a vision and not yet tangible as a reality and said ‘yes’ gave me the confidence to move forward and create this project.”

Invisible Cities, written by Christopher Cerrone and based on the 1972 novel by Italo Calvino, took audience members on a multi-sensory journey through Los Angeles’ Union Station, where they experienced an operatic narrative consisting of live dance performance, orchestral music and dramatic dialog: all driven by wireless headphone technology.

In addition to hundreds of wireless consumer headphones worn by attending opera patrons, the production utilized other Sennheiser technology including wired and wireless microphones, IEM (In Ear Monitor) systems, a complex antenna farm set up through the terminal, as well as Sennheiser’s latest innovation: its state of the art Digital 9000 system, which delivered eight channels of uncompressed, artifact free audio.

Hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as a “signal cultural event” and “a delicate and beautiful opera” by The Los Angeles Times, Invisible Cities was a joint production by The Industry and L.A. Dance Project which premiered at Los Angeles’ historic Union Station and performed to sold-out audiences during its run in October and early November 2013. Based on Italo Calvino’s fantastical novel, the opera was composed and adapted by Christopher Cerrone, conceived and directed by The Industry’s founder and artistic director Yuval Sharon, with choreography by Danielle Agami. New MADI Option on LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe Sound Card
With the addition of an optical MADI interface option to the company’s LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe sound card, Digigram enables the industry’s migration from synchronous audio (MADI) to IP audio (RAVENNA/AES67) in the studio environment. As a result, users can move from more expensive, less flexible proprietary equipment to standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IT-based systems running common media-oriented IT protocols. Four Join Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems “A” Team

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) has announced the appointment of four industry notables to positions on the marketing and technical teams.

Steve Armstrong spent close to 20 years as an independent rep in the Northwest and Northern California representing many top lines including Dolby Lake, L-Acoustics, and NEXO. He also held the position of North American Director of Sales at JBL for 12 years in 1994. Previously, Steve was tour director for two major product roll outs and involved in the design and installation of several major installations, most notably, Bayside Church in Roseville, CA; Herbst Theater and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. In his new position as Speaker Systems Application Engineer at YCAS, he will support the NEXO product line as well as Yamaha branded speaker systems.

Chad Cooper began his career at Capitol Records in the A&R department during college. He then worked for the Walt Disney Company at the Disneyland Resort for the past 28 years as both a Live Sound Engineer/Technician and Manager, mixing upwards of ten thousand shows in his career at Disney, then becoming a manager in the technical services department in charge of the flagship Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park. As Applications Manager, Chad is responsible for YCAS Technical Support.

Patrick Killianey joined YCAS as Network Systems Applications Engineer in late 2013 with over 15 years of experience in Pro Audio, Automation, and Commercial Sound. Working with TASCAM, AMX and M-Audio, Patrick was involved in product development, market expansion, and customer education initiatives. He also spent seven years operating his own business – South Coast Logic – providing system design, project management, and automation programming services for premiere dealers across the country. Patrick’s focus at YCAS is on the mass transition towards networked audio, acting as an internal champion and an educator to the industry.

Marcel Mauceri has been appointed to the position of NUAGE Technical Marketing Specialist. His music and audio experience range from live performance, songwriting, and recording to audio post-production work for independent feature films. Prior to joining YCAS, Marcel held multiple positions over fourteen years, including Echo Digital Audio, a research and development company located in Santa Barbara, CA. where he managed global sales, interfaced with clients as the go–to tech person, and was a contributor to Echo product development and OEM projects for Mackie and Gibson guitar.

Broadcast Pix Part of New Video Call Center Solution for New Genre of Production Workflow

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ announced today that its integrated production switchers are being used with the new Video Call Center (VCC) automated production solution to bring the caller-based talk radio show format to television. By utilizing Broadcast Pix’s application programming interface (API) and file-based macros, the VCC system essentially creates a video-driven version of talk radio using Web-based video sources.

Inventor Tom Wolzien company received a patent for VCC on July 1. A 45-year television veteran, Wolzien serves as a consultant for large media organizations through his company, Wolzien LCC, and is the lead independent director for TiVo, Inc. Since last year, Wolzien and his team have been testing the VCC system by producing TalkCenterAmerica®, a series of call-in shows covering a variety of topics.

“VCC is right at the intersection of social and mass media, TV and the Web,” said Wolzien. “What’s unique is that the system doesn’t just handle a single IP video call, but it’s designed to handle multiple video calls simultaneously, each with the power of its own computer – essential for any live caller-based TV program.”

With VCC, the on-camera host produces the call-in show without a traditional control room.
