AGCO Corp. Chooses Christie 4K Projectors for 3D Virtual Reality Powerwall

Agricultural machinery leader AGCO Corporation is using Christie® 4K high frame rate (HFR) projection to light up its 3D virtual reality powerwall at its engineering facilities in Jackson, Minnesota. AGCO installed a Christie-powered virtual reality system at its FENDT Research and Development facility in Germany and, impressed with the system’s results and utility, decided to expand its program to North America. The new powerwall in Jackson utilizes two Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® 4K projectors

The Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® projector features full 4K resolution and 35,000 center lumens running at a high frame rate of 60Hz.

running at 60Hz, with TechViz’ 3D visualization software technology and ART tracking system, to display images of agricultural machine models in stereoscopic 3D onto an 8-feet by 16-feet glass screen. Christie performed the site survey and full design, as well as the integration and installation, providing a “one-stop shopping” solution.

One of the largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery in the world, AGCO is committed to investing in state-of-the-art visualization technology to aid in design and development of farming equipment at its facilities. Using TechViz visualization software brought to life by Christie’s high performance projectors, AGCO engineers can view virtual prototypes of the machines on the wall during the design and development process. This allows them to visualize site lines inside and outside the cabs, take off the hood, analyze HVAC airflow, and carry out overall reviews of the machines. Eventually, they’ll use full automations of running machines to see how they respond to different surfaces and textures.

Improving Product Quality, Reducing Costs, and Encouraging Collaboration
The core functions of the system are to achieve optimal product quality and reduce costs by streamlining product development. AGCO also plans to use the powerwall for manufacturing and assembly training purposes, as well as servicing and marketing, attesting to the versatility and value of the solution.

“The powerwall has become an incredibly instrumental and useful part of our engineering process,” said Joseph Black, senior business analyst, AGCO Corporation. “By reviewing the models virtually we are able to catch interferences, perform clearance checks and fix engineering designs ahead of prototyping, allowing us to create fewer prototypes before the final product is ready. Ultimately, we hope the powerwall will not only help us reduce costs, but build the best farming equipment possible.” The TechViz XL software enables the display of virtual prototypes in real time without data conversion, and the use of a wide range of applications.

AGCO’s new powerwall has also succeeded in encouraging collaboration among employees and divisions by supporting communication through visual presentation. In addition to the individual operating the wall, 3D glasses are available for all of the observers in the room. This allows teams to gather and perform group analysis and work together on innovative new ideas. The powerwall screen, made up of a single sheet of durable glass, provides a much clearer image as compared to soft white screens.

Christie Technology and Service Get the Job Done
“3D visualization technology has proven to be an instrumental tool for engineers and developers, as it allows concepts and designs to be viewed and analyzed like never before. For AGCO, it’s critical for the virtual image to be as representative as possible, optimizing their ability to detect and correct any potential design concerns long before production release,” said Jennifer Smith, executive vice president, Global Market Solutions, Christie. “Offering the highest resolution, highest brightness and highest quality image and video displays available today, the Christie D4K3560 projector is the perfect solution. AGCO can be confident that the powerwall is delivering ultra-realistic images to ensure every detail of the object being displayed can be viewed clearly.”

The Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® projector features full 4K resolution and 35,000 center lumens running at a high frame rate of 60Hz. Built on the Christie TruLife™ electronics platform, it delivers superior brightness, smoother video, and vibrant, life-like images.

“We were so impressed with the Christie D4K35 projectors, running at 30Hz used for the FENDT powerwall in Germany, that when it came time to install the system in Jackson, Christie was once again the clear choice. But with the projectors running at the higher frame rate of 60Hz, we can produce an even better image — a feat that we didn’t think was possible. The visuals look absolutely stunning,” added Black. “The Christie service team did it all for us – not just the overall design, floor plan, and configuration of the powerwall, but also the complete installation.”

World Cup Concert in Rio Scores Big with DPA Microphones

Renowned classical musicians helped close FIFA games during finale performance with assistance from d:dicate™ Recording Mics

RIO DE JANEIRO, JULY 18, 2014 – When Spanish tenor and conductor Plácido Domingo took to the stage for the Concert in Rio, honoring the close of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, television audiences received a crystal clear sound thanks to DPA Microphones’ d:dicate™ Recording Microphones. Performing at the HSBC Arena Stage in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, July 11, Domingo was accompanied by Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra.

With the entire world watching, Grammy® Award-winner Jesse Lewis, audio producer for the live international broadcast of the concert, knew he needed reliable microphones for the broadcast of the performance, which was aired live from the massive arena. He turned to DPA Microphones for its range of d:dicate mics, including the 4006 Omnidirectional, 4011 Cardioid and 4041 Large Diaphragm solutions.

“For a venue of that size, we had a tremendous need for an overhead microphone that was able to reach deep into the orchestra and pull out the really important details of the instruments,” says Lewis. “In this case, it was the DPA 4006 and 4041. The sound of the live broadcast depended greatly on the special sound those mics provide. Additionally, I have relied on the d:dicate 4011 for years as my preferred mic for acoustic piano recording. That’s why I selected a stereo pair on podium stands, accompanied by a pair of the d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Mics, for Lang Lang’s piano, and I’m happy I did, because the sound was very big and beautiful.”

Working alongside the concert’s live sound engineer Jerry Eade, who used his own collection of microphones, Lewis also faced the challenge of combating PA and monitor bleed with the live broadcast. “We needed a microphone that would keep the music and the atmosphere, but would reduce the negative effects from being on the wrong side of the PA system,” he explains. “Being omnidirectional, the DPA 4041 has unique characteristics, both on and off axis, that helped us do exactly what we wanted – more music and less PA bleed. It really couldn’t have been a more perfect setup. Despite using a PA system, we were able to achieve the exact sound we strive for in a pure acoustic situation.”

According to Lewis, the concert’s producer Bernhard Fleischer was ecstatic with the sound that they achieved. “The DPA mics hanging over the orchestra were the most crucial ingredient for this production,” adds Lewis. “They ensured that we conveyed the music in a powerful way to the broadcast audiences around the world.”

Performing for his sixth World Cup concert, Domingo presented a program of arias, Spanish zarzuelas and Broadway hits in addition to traditional Brazilian songs and sambas. Led by American-born pianist and conductor Eugene Kohn for the Concert in Rio, the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1940 and was the first touring orchestra from Brazil. The Latin Grammy Winner for Best Classical Album in 2001, Martínez regularly performs alongside Domingo as well as singer Andrea Bocelli while Lang Lang, who is considered one of the most sensational artists in classical music, was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of three.

Holosonics Announces Fully Integrated Design For Audio Spotlight Directional Speakers, Including Smaller And More Powerful Models With New Features

Already featured in thousands of prominent installations worldwide, the Audio Spotlight directional speaker system by Holosonics just received a lengthy list of improvements and new features.

Designed to produce a narrow beam of sound, similar to the beam of light from a stage spotlight or flashlight, Audio Spotlight speakers provide unprecedented directivity and sound control. By simply aiming the thin, flat speaker panel at the desired target, Holosonics’ patented technology allows users to discreetly provide sound to specific areas, without significantly impacting the overall ambient noise level, or disrupting surrounding areas.

Holosonics’ new speaker design eliminates the external amplifier in lieu of a simpler, sleeker, all-in-one package. While the amplifier/processor has been squeezed into the speaker, its abilities and features have also been significantly enhanced. The amplifier now features revised audio processing, resulting in a much fuller and more natural sound output, including an improved low frequency range. The improvements in breadth and depth of sound quality the new models offer is quite impressive, and a large step forward for their unique directional speaker technology.

The advancements don’t end there; the new Audio Spotlight systems also offer a built-in playback device with microSD memory capability, as well as an infrared remote control, seamlessly allowing users complete advanced control over the system’s features and parameters.

Rounding out the control features are a series of selectable optimized preset modes designed to best accommodate typical program material, such as voice, music, and power. A visual display screen on each speaker also provides real-time report of mode, settings, adjustments, and level metering.

Holosonics has also included VESA 100 and M6 mounting inserts on each speaker model, in addition to a pair of keyhole style inserts, to provide more flexible mounting options and third-party compatibility, which will be of great benefit to customers worldwide.

Dr. F. Joseph Pompei, founder of Holosonics and inventor of the Audio Spotlight directional speaker technology, proudly states, “We have been working towards this design for a long time, and are very excited to share these new and improved models with our customers. We take great pride in catering our technology to our customers, and every new design came directly from their desires and thoughtful feedback.”

Artspace Studio Buys a Prism Sound Titan Audio Interface

Artspace Studio, one of London’s premier boutique recording, has recently invested in a Prism Sound Titan USB multi-track audio interface for its Brixton-based facility.

“Titan was recommended to me by quite a few people, including mastering engineer Mandy Parnell at Black Saloon Studios and Kirk DeGiorgio (aka As One),” explains mixing and mastering engineer/producer, Tom Gillieron. “We thought we’d test one out, and we were amazed! I do a lot of mixdown work for people and they send me tracks that they’ve mixed down ‘in the box’ in Pro Tools, Ableton or Logic. When I compare the mixes I have done through the Titan and then summed on the SSL Matrix, the clarity in the high end is amazing and the stereo image is far clearer and more impressive.”

Studio owner Olsi Rama agrees that the Prism Sound Titan has been the best purchase Artspace has made this year.

“We have used the pre amps a lot because they are great, and we have also used it to clock from our Digidesign 192s,” Rama says. “We have an 8-track 3M tape machine at the studio and sometimes we like to record drums onto that. With the Titan’s fantastic conversion we can get back into the computer really easily without losing the warm analogue sound.”

Artspace is developing a strong reputation as the place to record in London. Artists who have recently worked in the facility include Jamie T, Marmozets, The Severed Limb and Martyn Ware (Human League). It is a mixed digital and analogue recording facility that offers three rooms, including a large live room, the Octagon, billed as a distinctive space ideal for laying down drums and group recordings.

Rama adds that another feature both he and Gillieron like is Titan’s versatile USB connection.

“This is great because it allows visiting engineers to just plug in their laptop with their preferred software and make an immediate connection to our vintage outboard processors without losing any of the detail,” he says.

Gillieron adds: “I have mixed down some tracks that I started elsewhere, on different speakers and on headphones and so on. The Prism Sound unit gave all the projects a bit of a boost – to my ears – which was exciting but also made me listen to them more carefully and mistakes became more obvious.”

For the future Gillieron is looking forward to using the Titan on multitrack field recordings of live musicians, but he’s already impressed with what it has revealed through his current and long-standing audio set-up.

“I have mastered a few tracks using the Titan and I find it’s easier for me to pinpoint unnecessary resonance than it was with what we were using before,” he says. “And I’ve been using the same speakers and amp for about 18 years.”

Gillieron has recently remixed PHORIA and his re-mix can be heard at this link: https://soundcloud.com/phoriamusic/emanate-tom-gillieron-remix

RCF & Reid Sound Support Special Olympics USA Olympic Town Stage

(Edison, New Jersey) The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games was the largest national games undertaking by the organization with this year’s event June 16-20 including 16 different sports competitions with over 5,000 athletes and more than an estimated 70,000 spectators. RCF was proud to partner with Windsor, New Jersey-based Reid Sound (www.reidsound.com) in providing the sound system for the Olympic Town Entertainment Stage.
The College of New Jersey, acted as the site for the Olympic Town, which served as the hub for all the events held at various locations throughout the area. The Olympic Town was given a boardwalk theme with sand placed in front of the stage to create an artificial beach and a wooden boardwalk over 150-feet long ran through the center of the venue. The stage was host to multiple bands, magicians, dance troupes and a variety of other performers each day.
The system configuration included 4 dB Technologies DVA-T8 three-way active line array boxes ground stacked on top of 2 DVA-S10DP 18” active subwoofers per side, with RCF TT25-A 15” active two-way cabinets used as stage monitors and NX15-SMA 15” active speakers as fills. Additional satellite sound was provided with RCF HD10-A 10” active two-way cabinets.
The DVA-T8’s provided plenty of volume, with headroom to spare, for the crowds of athletes and volunteers that gathered at the site at the end of competition every day,” notes Reid Sound Director of Event Services Jonathan Mills-Winkler. “Considering the size, output and tonality of the speakers, they offer considerable value,” as well as lightweight and ease of setup.
“We can’t thank RCF enough for their participation,” says Reid Sound owner Darren Sussman. “This was a huge event that required an intense amount of planning and coordination, and I am grateful for RCF pitching in. There was not even a moment of hesitation from RCF to participate.”
Reid Sound has built a solid reputation over the past 15 years providing professional audio-video service, event production and installation solutions in the New Jersey area. Recently, Reid Sound has expanded its commitment to community partnership by launching the Reid Sound Scholarship for Theatrical Technicians, an annual award to recognize the achievements of those high school students who have participated and wish to continue their education in the arena of theatrical production.

Clay Paky Rocks Third Eye Blind Festival Tour

American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind (3eb) is taking its Festival Tour to venues across America, and Clay Paky’s A.leda B-EYE K20 LED-based moving lights are hitting the road with them.

3eb’s production and lighting designer Mitchell Schellenger, of I Like Lights in Denver, created a look for the band that echoes the sunset set times of some of their gigs. “The band doesn’t always have a headline slot, and when that happens they don’t have the luxury of performing in complete darkness,” Schellenger explains. “So we decided to mimic the look of sunset with warm pretty light on stage. To do that we needed really bright fixtures.”

Enter Clay Paky B-EYEs, which Schellenger had read about and seen in video clips. “I wanted to get my hands on them – they looked really awesome,” he recalls. 4Wall Entertainment Lighting’s Nashville office supplied five fixtures, and Schellenger proceeded to design a rig that would be “universally speedy” getting on stage and off, a critical factor when the band wasn’t headlining.

His solution was to build carts comprised of Chauvet Nexus 4×4 LED panels with four B-EYEs arched above them. The fifth was positioned on a center line upstage to pop behind the lead singer.

“The B-EYEs have a nice big head so their look is perfect for our sunset theme,” Schellenger says. “The show color scheme starts more bright CTO Amber and works its way toward a deeper orange. The B-EYEs’ awesome effects give the show the ability to progress visually through that minimal color scheme.”

On the Festival Tour he’s doing quite a lot of bit mapping across the Nexus panels, the B-EYEs and a complement of other lights. He also deploys a number of macros, which enable 3eb to get on and off the stage quickly. “A start show macro makes us immediately ready for quick focuses,” Schellenger explains. “We have song macros, too, and an end show macro for a speedy finish.”

The lighting designer says that he and his assistant and crew chief, Cort Lawrence, have been pleased with the “stunning results” produced by the B-EYEs. “We’ve had a ton of feedback from the promoters, the band and fans on social media. Everybody has responded really well to them!”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, commented, “The Third Eye Blind tour is using out B-EYEs jus the way we intended them to be used and they look great on the stage. We’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for Clay Paky.
