ASHLY AUDIO PROCESSING AND MULTI-CHANNEL AMPS REVAMP CHICAGO AREA MALL

VERNON HILLS, ILLINOIS: Built in the early 1970s, Westfield Hawthorn Mall is located in the Chicago suburb of Vernon Hills. Its classic mall architecture boasts 4 anchor stores, 180 retail spaces, and 1.3 million square feet of space. However, until recently, its sound system possessed the lifeless quality of 1970s-era contractor-grade components. Music was low-fidelity, speech was of poor intelligibility, and volume throughout was too loud during slow times and too quiet during busy times. Renaissance Communications Systems, located nearby in Franklin Park, Illinois, overhauled Westfield Hawthorn Mall’s sound system. In addition to replacing the ceiling speakers, Renaissance also gave the mall modern auto-leveling control and multi-zone support using two Ashly Audio ne8800M 8-In x 8-Out Protea™ DSP System Processors and two 8-channel Ashly ne8250.70 Network Amplifiers.

“Certainly, one big issue was the sound quality itself,” said Mike Shares, CEO with Renaissance. “The components needed to be modernized. Beyond that, they were having problems with the volume control. First, the system wasn’t zoned properly, so low-ceiling areas had to share the same volume with high-ceiling areas such that neither area could be ideal. Moreover, traffic in the mall varies widely; it’s very slow on a weekday afternoon but very busy on a weekend afternoon or in the rush up to the holidays. The management wanted the sound system to play at appropriate volumes without having to manually track it. They have enough other things to worry about.”

Shares divided the system into thirteen zones based on location, purpose, and ceiling height. Input sources to each zone may be selected independently, and the target volume-over-noise in each zone may also be selected independently. Sensing microphones in several of the zones feed the pair of Ashly ne8800M Protea™ Digital Processors, which analyze the ambient noise and adjust the music or paging output to hit the target sound pressure level. A pair of Ashly ne8250.70 8-Channel Network Power amplifiers deliver 250-Watts per channel to all thirteen zones while taking-up only 4 rack spaces. Nearly 200 full-fidelity Community D6 loudspeakers now deliver the background music with modern impact and convey pages with crystal-clear intelligibility. Of course, paging and alarm overrides provide Westfield Hawthorn Mall patrons with a secure environment.

“I’ve been using Ashly for twelve years now, and I’ve always had excellent results,” said Shares. “The equipment is extremely reliable, and its five-year warranty was a selling point for the client. I have a good relationship with the Ashly support staff, and they helped with the most efficient plan for Westfield Hawthorn Mall. The ambient noise detection and adjustment feature in the Protea software works very well, and the fact that we could fit all of the processing and amplifier channels into just 8 rack spaces was great. That saves space and power consumption.” Based on the success of Westfield Hawthorn Mall, Renaissance has already secured another mall renovation job, where Shares will again use Ashly processing and amplification to deliver excellent performance at a fiercely competitive price.

Blackmagic Design announces ATEM Camera Control Now Available

Fremont, CA – July 31, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced the immediate availability of ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 which adds support for controlling cameras from ATEM production switchers via the program feed to the camera. ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 is available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website.

Until now the ability to control cameras from the live production switcher was only available to extremely high end broadcasters who had the costly infrastructure that allowed this feature. With the new ATEM Camera Control software update, ATEM live production switchers can now control cameras via a new open standard protocol sent to the camera via the return program feed.

ATEM Camera Control is compatible with the new Blackmagic Studio Camera when running software update v1.8.2 or later. The Blackmagic Studio Camera HD and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models feature both optical fiber and regular SDI program return feeds to the camera and the commands from the switcher are broadcast to all cameras via this program return feed.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera can be controlled via a regular CCU style of control, however to allow even greater creativity, the Blackmagic Studio Camera has a fully featured DaVinci Resolve primary color corrector built in featuring the same YRGB style grading that is found on DaVinci Resolve.

This means the switcher operator has incredible control over the cameras and not only can settings like focus and iris be remotely set with extreme accuracy, but the operator has full lift, gamma and gain controls in full YRGB colorspace just like a full color corrector. Now any colorist that is familiar with DaVinci Resolve color grading can use their creative skills on live production work.

This new ATEM Camera Control with color correction will allow customers to not only get perfect matching between cameras on live production, but operators can also take into account changing light conditions, which is common on outdoor events. Then when customers need to generate creative looks, such as for music videos, they can push the correction further for exciting looks all in real time.

The stylish control panel in the ATEM Software Control allows normal operation of the ATEM live production switcher, but then at any time the user can select the camera tab and then see the controls for each camera. They get a familiar CCU style of interface with easy control of black and iris settings on the camera as well as focus. When controlling a camera, this camera is automatically output using one of the switchers aux. outputs so the operator can use this aux. output to local monitoring.

When more refined and creative looks are desired, the user can then push a button and the CCU style interface will expand out to a fully featured primary color corrector interface, that allows color grading using an interface very familiar to any DaVinci Resolve colorist. Every setting creatively is the same as DaVinci Resolve as the processing is the same. With the color corrector built into the camera, customers get much greater creative control because the color corrector gets full bit depth and colorspace direct from the camera’s sensor.

“Since we first demonstrated the ATEM camera control, the response has been amazing, and broadcasters have quickly recognized the advantage of the Blackmagic Studio Camera’s design and interoperability with ATEM switchers as well as the incredible color corrector built right inside the camera itself!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Now they can have full control without running any extra cables using the new SDI based protocol. All that is required is a single thin SDI optical fiber or SDI cable. This is not just a simple CCU style of color adjustment but a full featured DaVinci primary color corrector built right into the camera itself. The benefit to the customer is that exciting creative looks can be achieved in live production, that previously were only possible in post production. I’m very excited to release this software and cannot wait to see what people do with it creatively!”

ATEM Camera Control Key Features

Color control for up to 20 cameras.
Familiar Da Vinci YRGB style live color grading including lift, gamma and gain control.
CCU style operation for the most commonly used operations of iris and pedestal levels.

ABS Lighting Grid Upgrade Improves Studio Versatility, Reduces Energy Costs for TV Tacoma

SEATAC, WA – The production studio for TV Tacoma, a government access channel serving the City of Tacoma and Pierce County, Wash., is a lot brighter and more versatile since professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) upgraded the facility’s lighting grid. ABS removed all incandescent lights and replaced them with almost 70 Brightline daylight balanced (5600K) fluorescent and LED LIGHTING instruments.

According to Mark Siegel, president of ABS, the redesigned lighting grid has twice the lights but has reduced energy consumption (including HVAC usage) by more than 75 percent. The four-day project was completed in February and also included a new ETC Element lighting console, which allows operators to dim all instruments and save lighting designs for easy recall.

Under the direction of supervisor John Miller, TV Tacoma has six FULL-TIME producers and a full schedule of original series and special programming, which is available locally on Click! and Comcast cable systems. Programming is also streamed live on www.cityoftacoma.org and archived through Granicus for on-demand viewing. The City of Tacoma also operates a regional bulletin board channel and a regional master control center that serves six channels from its facility.

The primary goals of the project were to drastically improve the overall studio lighting to coincide with the arrival of new sets, as well as reduce heat and energy consumption generated by the existing incandescent (quartz) lights. The 25×40 studio space once housed three sets, but now has enough lighting to support six sets, including a new green screen wall for chromakey productions.

Joe Cervone, a sales manager for Brightline who assisted with the project, said the company’s fluorescent SeriesONE fixtures were used to light large areas of the sets. “From there, we used our Lupolux LED Fresnels to sculpt, highlight, and add depth and texture,” he explained. “By mixing broad and point sources, we were able to produce excellent results with a more realistic return on investment, more so than if we just used LEDs.”

Jeff Lueders, cable communications and franchise services manager, City of Tacoma, said the new lighting was part of their overall improvement plan to enhance productions and the viewer experience. “It definitely makes our studio space more versatile, allowing PROGRAMS to include a performance area in addition to the traditional interview area,” he said. “The new lighting scheme also helps prepare our facility for the transition to HD production, which should be completed within the next nine months.”

“The before-and-after differences are stunning,” Cervone added. “In the ‘pre-light’ shows, the interview set almost looks grey and black, while it’s actually several shades of red, violet and gold. Also, utilizing daylight-balanced sources, we were able to relieve some of the challenges to the broadcast chain while they’re rapidly switching from studio to exterior location shots.”

“TV Tacoma might not have the biggest studio, but their investment in new lighting instruments has made their space significantly more flexible,” said Siegel. “The investment in Brightline fixtures is already paying off in lower energy costs and improved lighting quality. Plus, the new ETC lighting board makes it easy to recall lighting schemes for regular series, which saves a lot of time and effort.”

Power Music of Denmark Takes Newly Purchased HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers to ABC Beach Party

GRENAA STRAND, Denmark — Power Music of Denmark recently added HARMAN’s JBL VTX line arrays and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers to its inventory. A longtime HARMAN customer, Power Music is a leading regional provider of sound and lighting systems for applications of all sizes. The company recently put its new VTX system to the test at ABC Beach Party, a 12-hour event organized by Danish broadcaster ABC Radio, featuring approximately 25 artists. Held at Grenaa Strand, in Denmark, ABC Beach Party drew an audience of 10,200 people.

“As a JBL VERTEC® user for many years, the time had come for us to take the next step with VTX,” said Rune Hjort, Owner of Power Music. “The launch of the VTX V20 loudspeaker was a perfect solution for our company, providing great flexibility and fast setup with the new ASM suspension system.”

Power Music purchased a total of 16 VTX V20 loudspeakers, along with six S25 subwoofers and six G28 subwoofers. In addition, the company added six Crown I-Tech 12000HD and four I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers featuring Crown’s DriveCore™ technology (on top of the four I-Tech 4x3500HD amps the company already owns).

The PA system at ABC Beach Party featured a left-right configuration of eight V20 loudspeakers per side, topped with three S25 subwoofers per side. Six G28 subwoofers were ground-stacked as a center cluster in cardioid mode, while two VTX F12 loudspeakers were used for out fill. All monitors were JBL SRX712 and VRX915M loudspeakers, while side fill monitoring was handled with two JBL SRX725 loudspeakers and two SRX718S subwoofers. A Soundcraft Vi4 digital console was used at the FOH position, while a Vi1 console was deployed for monitors and the entire system was powered with Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers that were controlled, configured and monitored with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™.

“The last couple of years we have used JBL VERTEC® VT4888 loudspeakers, so we were really excited to see how the VTX system would compare,” said Rune Hjort, Owner of Power Music. “Needless to say it blew everyone away.
Considering the size of the crowd and the fact that the music was very sub-heavy we had some concerns about the amount of headroom. But when you have VTX boxes with I-Tech HD amps in front, you never really run out of power—you can just keep turning up the volume. I also love the fact that we barely had to touch the EQ on the vocals to get it just right.”

USO’s 4th of July Pitbull Concert at the White House Celebrates Veterans with Event Tech and HARMAN Professional

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Contracted by the United Service Organizations, Inc. (USO) for the sixth year to integrate the sound at the 4th of July concert on the South Lawn of the White House, live production company Event Tech deployed HARMAN’s JBL VTX line arrays, Crown amplifiers and dbx signal processing to meet the strict demands of the venue and to deliver high-quality sound to the honorable audience.

International pop star Pitbull gave an hour-long performance for the 1,200 US servicemen and servicewomen that were present, as well as their families and the White House staff. Besides the show, there were various activities such as barbecue, lawn-games, photo stands and meet-and-greets. However, the annual event would have not been as successful without Event Tech’s ability to bring high-level production quality to the events.

Because of a gradient on the South Lawn, it was a challenge to balance the sound between the two ends of the stage; stage-left was elevated two feet above the ground, and stage-right was elevated five-and-a-half feet above ground. To provide precise coverage of 280 degrees, Event Tech used four stacks of six ground-stacked JBL VTX V20 loudspeakers and one VTX S25 subwoofer per stack, as well as six VTX G28 subwoofers per side in cardioid arrangement as the main PA. Two VTX F12 and two VTX F15 loudspeakers were deployed for front and out fills.

Four VRack 4x3500HD and two VRack 12000HD amplification systems powered the entire PA system. A dbx DriveRack 4800 unit enhanced the signal processing and routing for the overall system. The system was configured and controlled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™.

“We did a lot of pre-work at our office with the VTX rig, because we wanted to make sure that the coverage was precise and make it drop off 300 feet from stage left, so that the sound did not penetrate the White House,” said Jeremy Meyers, Account Executive and Audio Systems Designer for Event Tech. “I was very impressed with the output from these small V20 boxes, given their relative size compared to those from other manufacturers that I have worked with in the past. The detailed coverage from JBL’s patented waveguide and the precise frequency output of the D2 drivers allowed us to accomplish our goal.”

Since the stage was set up between the fountain and the White House, space was tight and the FOH position was at an awkward location. Also, the crew was forced to use smaller sized loudspeakers in order to fit all the equipment onto the stage. However, compromising on power was not an option either, since Pitbull’s music has significant output requirements, especially for low frequencies.

“The VTX V20s were truly perfect because of their power-to-size ratio and the Crown amplifiers were also compact and powerful enough for this event,” said Raul Gonzalez of HARMAN. “The front stacks could throw the music 225 feet to the back of the audience, and the stacks on the side were so powerful that we did not need separate loudspeakers for the FOH position. Overall, the performance was great and we were able to deliver everything in a compact, tightly-integrated package.”

“We were also impressed with the VTX F12 and F15 fills, which had amazing output, even when compared to the V20 boxes,” said Meyers. “Thanks to our experience in live corporate events and the incredible caliber of these JBL loudspeakers, our veterans received a terrific 4th of July gift.”

Rockdale Town Hall Upgrades to State-of-the-Art Audio System with HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers and Soundcraft Digital Console

SYDNEY, Australia – In a project designed to reinvigorate the city’s regional arts and cultural hub, systems integration firm The P.A. People recently upgraded the audio system at Sydney’s Rockdale Town Hall. The new state-of-the-art system features HARMAN’s JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers and a Soundcraft Si Expression 1 digital console.

The new audio components at Rockdale Town Hall provide fresh life to the historic complex and provided Sydney with a world-class venue that can accommodate a varied array of events from musical concerts and variety shows to business, community and social events. In addition to the new PA and communications system, the auditorium’s beautiful Art Deco detailing has been restored.

To avoid intruding on the classical aesthetics of the venue, an unobtrusive yet powerful PA system was required and Brett Steele, project manager for The P.A. People, immediately thought of the JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers. Hung in a left/center/right configuration, the VRX932LA loudspeakers deliver extraordinary power handling, clarity, flexibility and, of course, stunning JBL sound in an attractive, easy to handle and affordable package.

“The VRX loudspeakers are configured to ensure maximum coverage and cater to the widest range of applications from musical theater to simple speeches,” Steele said. “The VRX rigging made it easy to install and the system is performing well.”

The PA is controlled through a Soundcraft Si Expression 1 digital mixing console, which is ideal for a venue that has to accommodate a wide variety of uses.

“This easy-to-use console from Soundcraft has the flexibility to accept local inputs in the control area, such as radio microphones and playback sources, as well as accepting microphone and line level inputs via the mini stage box located on the stage,” Steele added. “This is a great general purpose console for this venue.”

The reopening concert received a warm reception from both the crowd and in particular, the council.

“The Rockdale Town Hall reopening concert proved the sound system, specifically designed for this unique 1940s Art Deco auditorium, has the dynamic range to cater for any type of performance from opera to basic public speaking” endorsed a Council spokesman. “It complements and supplements the existing natural excellent acoustics of the Hall. Rockdale City Council is very happy with the end result.”

Wohler Provides Custom Monitoring Solution to France Télévisions

Wohler Collaboration With Audiopole and France Télévisions Demonstrates Agility and Speed in Meeting User Requirements

SAN FRANCISCO — July 30, 2014 – Wohler Technologies today announced that it has collaborated with local partner Audiopole and France Télévisions to provide a rapid solution for France Télévisions’ specific monitoring needs. Together, the three companies identified the additional audio monitoring functionality that France Télévisions desired from its existing AMP1-16M monitoring units, and, within a matter of weeks, the Wohler engineering team had created and delivered a software beta version for testing. Shortly thereafter, France Télévisions approved the software and ordered additional AMP1-16M units.

“I was really amazed by the responsiveness of the Wohler team,” said Jean-Philippe Blanchard, director of the broadcast division at Audiopole. “Given how quickly the solution was delivered and approved by France Télévisions, I think this is a very good example of perfect cooperation between a manufacturer and a broadcaster and how they can work together to improve a product.”

During live event broadcasts, France Televisions derives some audio from the microphones of commentators or talkback systems, which are as critical to monitor as the broadcast-to- air content. During a visit by Wohler’s regional representative and colleagues from partner Audiopole, France Télévisions requested a modification to its existing AMP1-16M units to enable a new monitoring workflow at the touch of a button. Wohler quickly stepped up to address this request, and the resulting functionality has become part of the latest firmware (version 4.0) for the AMP1-16M. Now France TV, France 24, and EuroNews all take advantage of this new monitoring approach.

“We are serious about our role as an extension of our clients’ engineering teams, and our collaboration with Audiopole and France Télévisions demonstrates this commitment very well,” said Carl J. Dempsey, Wohler president and CEO. “Wohler monitoring products are designed to be versatile systems that help users work the way they want to work. We use feedback from our customers to refine the design and functionality of all our products so that they yield the performance required, and the modification we made for France Télévisions is just one of many examples of this proactive approach to both product development and customer service.”

The Music Producers Guild Backs Fair Digital Deals

The Music Producers Guild has expressed its support for the Fair Digital Deals Declaration – a new initiative supported by over 700 indie record labels that want to see fair and transparent accounting of digital revenues for artists.

This massive show of support for artists to be treated and compensated fairly in the digital age has equal significance recording professionals, many of whom rely on royalties for a large proportion of their incomes.

“The music industry has a long history of unfairly exploiting the work of artists without whose creativity the industry would simply not exist,” says producer and MPG executive board member Mick Glossop. “The Fair Digital Deals Declaration is a welcome initiative, which seeks to address those injustices by promoting transparency and accountability.”

The initiative, coordinated by Worldwide Independent Network, states five primary guidelines that signees must adhere to. These include:

1. Ensure that artists’ share of download and streaming revenues is clearly explained in recording agreements and royalty statements in reasonable summary form.
2. Account to artists a good-faith pro-rata share of any revenues and other compensation from digital services that stem from the monetization of recording but are not attributed to specific recordings or performances.
3. Encourage better standards of information from digital services on the usage and monetization of music.
4. Support artists who choose to oppose, including publicly, unauthorized uses of their music.
5. Support the collective position of the global independent record company sector.

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – Heralded as one of the top voices in modern soul”, Scottish singer/songwriter/musician Paolo Nutini has quickly hit the big time since his 2006 debut album These Streets reached 5-times platinum in the UK. His 2010 follow-up Sunny Side Up reached Number One on the UK charts, as did his latest 2014 release Caustic Love. Nutini is currently touring worldwide in support of Caustic Love with monitor engineer Paul Hatt, working behind a HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi4 digital live sound console. Hatt has been with Nutini for the past six months, relying on the Vi4 to deliver monitor mixes to Nutini and his 11-piece band that includes guitars, bass, drums, a 2-piece brass section, backing vocals and more. In addition, Hatt’s company, CS Audio, has been providing a control and monitor package for the tour.

“Paolo has a wonderful dynamic range and we’re doing a nice mix of rock and some softer tunes,” Hatt pointed out. “The Vi4 sounds equally clear and musical whether Paolo and the band are quiet and subdued or rocking away at full bore—the console never sounds strained or harsh no matter what we ask it to do.”

Hatt notes that Paolo and the band are so tight they don’t need a click track: “This is the first band I’ve done in years where I don’t have to hear that click in my ear all the time and can just concentrate on the mix. The vocal and instrumental balances are always varying and changing with a band of this size and with the Vi4 I can easily store hundreds of cues if I like and easily keep up with anything Paolo and the band want to do, even on a moment’s notice.”

Hatt finds the expanded monitor mixing capabilities provided by the Soundcraft Vi4’s latest Version 4.8 software to be especially useful. Version 4.8 offers a number of significant new features including the ability for all 32 of the console’s mix busses to operate in stereo mode, to allow use as in-ear mixes. A number of new signal routing, panning and processing options are also provided. “I give Soundcraft credit for improving their already-excellent consoles with an update that adds new features to make life easier,” he said.

“The Vi4 is now even more suited to live performance thanks to the expanded bus structure,” Hatt said. “It’s nice to know I can keep adding stereo mixes and not run out of them, which happens with some other consoles.”

Hatt has also been working with the Soundcraft ViSi Remote iPad app, which enables remote control of Soundcraft Vi Series or Si Compact consoles from an iPad. Hatt takes his iPad with ViSi app on the road to EQ the monitor wedges from various locations across the stage, finding it extremely useful in dialing the sound of each monitor without having to constantly run to and from the console to the stage. “To say this speeds up the process of fine tuning and ringing out the monitors would be an understatement,” he noted.

Hatt had been using Soundcraft digital consoles for a few years before signing on with Nutini. “I have to say the Vi4, along with the Vi1, has been my favorites of any live sound consoles.”

In Hatt’s estimation, the Vi4 and Vi1 are the most intuitive to operate and combine all the control, signal routing, instant setup and recall, built-in processing and other benefits of a digital platform with unexcelled sound quality. “With the Vi4 I often forget I’m using a digital board, but when I go back to other brands I can feel the difference in ease of use,” he concluded. “The Vi4 is by far the best and easiest console out there for live concert mixing.”
