A United ‘Console’ Kingdom

DiGiCo, Allen & Heath, and Calrec Announce the Formation of a New ProAudio Group

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — Aug. 1, 2014 – The DiGiCo team has spent the last 18 months consulting with Electra Partners about the possible combination of both Allen & Heath and Calrec with the DiGiCo family. The culmination of this brings together three British console companies to create a new professional audio group, while retaining their unique skills, customer relationships, and the identities of each brand.

James Gordon will become Group CEO supported by a strong and talented management team from across the new group. When asked about what this means for the future, James said:

“We have bold plans for the group but it is imperative that each company maintain its own independence and style. None of these brands needs to trade off each other’s technology or reputation.”

“These are three great companies and all the brands currently in the group have enviable reputations for technology, audio quality, reliability, and perhaps most importantly, customer focus and care. The strategy is to share technology and resources across the group and allow some interconnectivity across the product lines.”

“The combined R&D teams are about to enter a new world of possibilities and we intend to take full advantage of their resources, passion, and experience. It’s an amazing opportunity for us, and just maybe the whole British Pro Audio industry.”

Glenn Rogers, Managing Director of Allen & Heath, added, “The creation of the group with DiGiCo and their management is an impressive combination. It will certainly add new momentum to what Allen & Heath and Calrec had already planned for the future.”

Henry Goodman, Calrec’s Sales and Marketing Director, commented that “This exciting formation gives Calrec new opportunities for swifter development of a host of ideas we have been wanting to bring to the market. We will have a vast pool of engineers to share new ideas for the industry and target them specifically to each brand’s needs. Customers can expect us to maintain, and in some areas improve, our very high levels of support and service.”

The complexity of this combination required the effort and support of two of London’s top Private Equity houses. For the first time, Electra Partners and ISIS have pooled resources to support the management of this ambitious vision for the future of U.K. Pro Audio. Charles Elkington, Investment Partner at Electra Partners, said:

“DiGiCo augments our existing investment in the professional audio sector. We have worked hard over the last 18 months to bring together these three successful businesses. We look forward to working with James Gordon and his team to grow the group, while also preserving the distinctive brand identity and excellent customer relationships of each business.”

Entertainment Quality Audio System for New Debrecen Stadium

Interton Ltd has designed and installed a Community loudspeaker sound system for the new Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen, Hungary. An all-seated football stadium, Nagyerdei has a 20,340 capacity, making it the third largest capacity Hungarian football stadium and the second largest Hungarian League stadium.

Home to the Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club, Nagyerdei Stadion was opened on 1 May 2014 and the first official match was played between Debrecen and Újpest, which ended with a 3-1 victory for the host team. As well as hosting Debreceni VSC games, the stadium will host matches for the Hungarian national football team. The ground also incorporates conference and banqueting suites and has a club shop selling Debrecen merchandise.

Zoltán Horváth, chief engineer of Interton Ltd, explained the basis for the system design, “Community loudspeakers are our first choice for stadium systems, and we have completed many successful projects with R SERIES. The brief for Nagyerdei, in addition to good speech intelligibility, was for discrete styling and high quality music, so the obvious choice was the weather-resistant version of the iHP-1596 from the iBOX SERIES, which provided the power, wide frequency response and aesthetics the client wanted. An EASE simulation was carried out to confirm the design would meet the required criteria.”

The audio system network is provided by a Q-SYS system, with one Core250i and the required number of I/O Frames. The main arena sound system uses four I/O Frames and twenty-eight PLX3102 amplifiers, located in four rack rooms. These amplifiers drive fifty-three Community iHP-1596WR loudspeakers, mounted below the outside edge of the canopy and providing sound to the 360-degree grandstand and to the playing field. The iHP-1596WR is a premium quality large-format 15-inch full-range loudspeaker system with 90 x 60 degree coverage. “The results are impressive,” comments Horváth. “It’s a really nice sounding system with great SPL to inform and entertain a capacity crowd.”

In addition to the main arena PA, Interton designed and installed the audio systems for the venue’s main buildings and studio and also supplied a mobile conference system. Interton additionally installed the scoreboards and the perimeter display, the video distribution system and more than 100 LCD displays. Audio and video distribution are Ethernet based using the stadium’s LAN.

An inauguration ceremony was held for the opening of Nagyerdei Stadion by Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán. After sanctification by leaders of both the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Catholic Church, singers including Lou Bega, Viktor Király, Ildikó Kersztes, Gigi Radić and Erika Miklósa entertained the audience at the celebration.

Diggerland Offers Great Fun with Great Sound

Unique Attraction Features Construction Site Theme and Community Loudspeaker System

Spellcaster’s Mike Shafer says “looking at the vast areas I had to cover outdoors, I immediately thought of R Series.” He chose R.15COAX loudspeakers for the outdoor short-throw, fill and walkway areas and R.35-3896 three-way loudspeakers for the long-throw applications.

Diggerland USA’s indoor spaces have dropped ceilings with very little space between the ceiling and the roof deck. Shafer used Community’s D4LP four-inch, low-profile ceiling loudspeakers which fit in the restricted space and left room for wiring. For the covered open-area spaces such as the games arcade, he used Community’s DP6 pendant loudspeakers which brought the sound down below the ceiling beams and vibration isolated the loudspeakers from the metal roof. The overall park loudspeaker system is a 70-volt distributed design that used over 12,000 feet of speaker cable.

Spellcaster used Ashly amplifiers and an Ashly NE24.24M DSP to manage the park audio systems. They added a park-wide Wi-Fi system that allows Diggerland USA technical personnel to adjust the audio systems from any point in the park with an iPad. Spellcaster also integrated the audio system with the park’s CCTV cameras and security systems.

Diggerland USA plays music and advertising messages over their audio system with a live DJ for special events. Paging is available from any park telephone and Shure wireless mics are available for parties and other special events. Spellcaster’s Shafer says, “the park’s audio systems are everything we expected. The music sounds great and the voice paging is loud and clear.”

Clay Paky Shotlight Washes Rock at Back-to-Back Outdoor Concerts

Clay Paky Shotlight Wash fixtures really rock. In fact, they took to the stage for two back-to-back concerts in May: the MMR*B*Q, the annual show from Philadelphia rock radio station 93.3 WMMR where Rob Zombie headlined, and the WRFF-FM Seventh Birthday Show where Foster the People headed the bill.

John Duncan of Pinpoint Lighting, the festival lighting designer for both shows, says the same rig stayed in place for MMR*B*Q and WRFF’s Seventh Birthday Show at the outdoor Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey. Ten Shotlight Washes obtained from Main Light Industries in Wilmington, Delaware were mounted on the downstage truss for the shows.

“The rig’s overall design was a standard festival plot,” he says. “It’s just that every year everyone wants it brighter. So the Shotlight was perfect for this application.”

Clay Paky’s Shotlight Wash combines a 1500W discharge lamp wash light and a 3000W Xenon lamp strobe in one device. The two wash/strobe functions are perfectly integrated and can be operator-controlled with either simultaneous or separate operation and special effects. The strobe function is provided by two semicircular Xenon lamps working independently so they can flash together or separately at different frequencies.

The wash light section features an optical unit with extremely high luminous efficiency; an 11º-74º electronic zoom; an array of filters; a hybrid dimmer; and three-phase pan/tilt motor for perfectly silent operation.

Duncan had previously used Shotlights on an indoor show and found that he could “wash the entire stage with just four of them. They were really bright, and I needed something big, bad and bright for the back-to-back festivals.”

John Bailey, the lighting designer for Rob Zombie, was initially supposed to use another light as a “good front light” for the singer. “But when I heard the Shotlights were going to be used, I was happy. I was very glad to see a bigger lamp. Ten on the downstage truss was more than enough.”

For Rob Zombie’s act Bailey ran four 9×12-foot scrims with images on them around the stage. “It took only two Shotlights to wash all that for me,” he reports. “They were really perfect for this type of thing. My color palette for Rob is very saturated, and these lights mixed them really well. I was also very impressed with the strobes.”

Duncan says the Shotlight Washes performed “excellently” for the duration of both rock concerts. “We didn’t have one problem with them.”

Bailey calls the fixtures “really amazing” and says, “I look forward to using them again.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, commented, “The Shotlight’s brightness combined with the innovative effects seemed perfect for this application and I’m glad they could function so well for these great lighting designers.”

A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for Clay Paky.
