American Idols LIVE! Tour 2014 Reaches New Sonic Heights with Sennheiser Digital 9000 Wireless System

Best In Class Wireless System Brings out The Best From a Diverse Range of Vocalists, Amidst Challenging RF Environments

Old Lyme, CT, August 19, 2014: As the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2014 charges through the final leg of its highly successful summer tour, North American audiences have been treated to a broad range of talented male and female contestants performing a diverse selection of material. The new Sennheiser Digital 9000 system has delivered stellar performance every step of the way, capturing each nuance of the vocal performances in stunning detail and clarity.

This year, since the contestants are singing to backup tracks, the audio system consists primarily of a multi-channel playback rig, wireless in ear monitors and vocal microphones — putting the spotlight squarely on the Idol contestant performances. At the recommendation of Lititz, PA-based Clair Global the audio team decided to utilize (16) channels of Sennheiser Digital 9000 wireless to provide the best possible audio quality for both performers and fans.

“When Clair presented me with the idea of using the new Sennheiser Digital 9000 on this tour, I was very excited because I know it is a phenomenal system,” commented Dustin DeLuna, Monitor Engineer and RF Technician for American Idols LIVE! Tour 2014. “So far, it has surpassed my every expectation — the microphones have sounded amazing across the entire range of vocalists we’ve got out here.”

The Digital 9000 system used on American Idols LIVE! Tour 2014 consists of two eight channel Sennheiser EM 9046 receiver units, (14) SKM 9000 handheld wireless transmitters with MD 9235 capsules and (2) SK 9000 beltpack transmitters. Each of the (10) Idol contestants have been using the SKM 9000 transmitter / MD 9235 capsule combinations. In addition, several microphone / transmitter combinations are being used as ‘guest’ microphones and for pre-show Q&A sessions, which are extremely popular among fans.

For monitoring, the audio team has been relying on (18) channels of Sennheiser 2000 series transmitters and receivers. These cover in ear monitoring — including click tracks to make sure everyone is in time — for each of the onstage performers as well as production staff including the stage manager, lighting technician and Pro Tools operator.

Digital 9000: Outperforming in the Most Extreme RF Environments

As one might expect, the performance venues on the tour vary greatly and include arenas, casinos, theaters, sheds, outdoor fairgrounds and others. In the face of such a diverse range of performance spaces, Sennheiser Digital 9000 helps bring predictability when it comes to RF performance. “The system has been unstoppable from a reliability perspective,” reports DeLuna. “Since we started using it, there has not been a single drop out. Just the other day, we were at Indiana State Fair — it was the most crowded RF environment we have seen on this tour. But after scanning and setting up our frequencies, we had no issues. It has literally been flawless.”

For DeLuna, who is handling double duty as the tour’s sole Monitor Engineer and RF Technician, ease of use and set up time are precious. On this level, the Digital 9000 does not disappoint. “The frequency scanning features are amazing because the interface is so visual,” he explains. “Scanning takes about 30 seconds from start to finish, and the Digital 9000 allows me to visually plot out where I am going to put the microphone transmitters to see how they will work with other RF in the area. I can scan and sync these transmitters without any trouble — and I don’t even have to walk them,” he says.

Delivering Pristine, Uncompressed Sound for the Masses

Front of House Engineer Kirk Shreiner, now in his third year on the Idol tour, says the Sennheiser Digital 9000 delivers on audio quality: “It has a very clean and warm sound,” he says. “I regularly get comments on how great the microphones are on this tour, and I am having great experiences on all the PA systems we have been using with these mics.” Shreiner also appreciates the outstanding feedback rejection of the new MD 9235 capsule. “It’s not unusual to have all of the contestants up on stage singing at the same time in front of the PA, and with these microphones we’re not having to fight the system.”

For mixing in ear monitors, DeLuna has had a similarly positive experience: “The top end of the MD 9235 capsule is very smooth,” he says. “All in all, the audio seems to be very well rounded. With the Digital 9000, I am hearing more detail and it is almost like the difference between an mp3 file and a wav file. Since there is more ‘information’ in the audio, it means I don’t have to make as many EQ corrections.”

In addition to the RF reliability and sonic qualities of the system, DeLuna is especially impressed at how quiet the SKM 9000 transmitter / MD 9235 capsule combination is in light of a brand new capsule design and dampening mechanism. “We have noticed zero handling noise, and this is usually among the first things a Front of House Engineer will complain about,” he says. In an RF world that is usually dependent on buckets of AA batteries, DeLuna also appreciates the newly designed battery compartment on the transmitter: “The two buttons at the bottom that are used to slide the battery in and out are so easy to use. Moreover, the rechargeable batteries last for six hours at a time and we can run the whole day with one set of batteries,” he says.

DVEO Wins Prestigious Annual SBE Award for DOZERbox II IP Video Traffic Smoothing via UDP Packet Recovery Technology

IP Video Traffic Smoothing and Packet Recovery Technology for Reliable and Timely Delivery of Video over Public Internet – DOZERbox IP IPSan Diego, California — DVEO, the broadcast division of Computer Modules, Inc. (CMI), announced today that their patent pending IP video traffic smoothing technology has won the prestigious Society of Broadcast Engineers Technology Award for 2014.

DVEO’s DOZERbox II IP gateways enable broadcasters, IPTV operators, and Over The Top (OTT) video providers to improve their video distribution over public internet or so-so private lines, doing invisible packet loss recovery. DVEO will demonstrate their “DOZER” technology at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, September 12-16, at Stand 2.A34.

“Only one SBE Technology Award is granted each year,” stated Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. “We are extremely honored to be chosen for this major broadcast engineering award. Everyone at DVEO is very proud of our engineering team.”

The Technology Award recognizes the SBE Individual or Sustaining Member who has provided the industry with the best new or innovative technical item to further the science of broadcast engineering and to assist the broadcast engineer to be more productive in the craft. The award will be presented during the SBE National Meeting taking place October 8th in Verona, New York.

In some regions of the USA, public internet infrastructure is not always reliable and drops video packets during periods of high packet volume. Public routers do not prioritize video traffic well enough. DVEO’s “DOZER” technology routes video through the public internet in a unique way.

The DOZERbox II IP IP is a compact (4.6 inches/117 mm square) end to end Error Correcting Router for smoothing UDP traffic over the public internet, with built-in packet recovery algorithms for alleviation of packet loss or resultant video freezes. It makes transmissions immune to jitter and noise, and does not delay video like FEC. It is perfect for delivering critical video over congested public backbones. The technology is also available as a software license — the Media Dozer: LIC, or in a 1 RU system — the DOZER Racks IP IP.

Typically sold in pairs, the DOZERbox and DOZER Racks gateways replace expensive private point to point internet managed network connections. Many broadcasters use them to replace satellite transmissions. Customers in the USA use Dozer technology to import video content from Greece, Iraq, Colombia, and Bangladesh — with no packet loss or video freezes, and lower latency. An Asian IP TV operator uses the DOZERbox to utilize video transfer between cities. Many customers use it to create their own advanced CDN (Content Delivery Network). The technology is also used in remote robotics.

When Media Dozer II: LIC is added to DVEO systems such as the MultiStreamer encoder or MPEG Gearbox II transcoder, the original content can be encoded or transcoded before it is processed by the Media Dozer II: LIC.

Media Dozer II: LIC can also be added to DVEO’s unicast to multicast RTP to UDP converter, the Proxicaster IP IP. The system adds wrappers such as HLS or RTMP, and redirects video streams to multiple locations. This new combination product is sold as the Proxi DOZER™.

HARMAN Professional Delivers Superb Sound in New Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium

BIBVEWADI, PUNE, India — The city of Pune has a new cultural attraction to be proud of – the recently completed Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium, an 850-seat facility built to host Marathi-language theatrical productions and other events. Named for the noted social reformer and writer, the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe auditorium has an understated yet striking architectural design and an elegant interior with the finest quality appointments and audio/video facilities throughout, including an audio system built around HARMAN Professional’s JBL, Crown and dbx.

Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium was built under the auspices of government agency Pune Municipal Corporation, which chose Zillion Solutions of Pune as the systems integrator thanks to the firm’s more than 25 years of experience in auditorium installations. “The time span to install the audio system was only five days,” said Pankaj Pansare, Zillion Solutions’ proprietor. “Five days for everything – from receiving the loudspeakers and components to installing, EQing and calibrating the system in time for opening night.” As if that wasn’t enough pressure for Pansare and his team, the installation was the first government project Zillion Solutions had ever undertaken.

Pansare knew he could turn to HARMAN to help him meet the tight time requirements and provide loudspeakers and products that would deliver world-class sound. “We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Zillion Solutions over the course of many successful projects,” noted Rohan Tadke, National Sales Manager, HARMAN Professional India. “They know our products offer sound quality, performance and reliability that’s second to none and we know they trust us as a valued partner to provide technical and design assistance and deliver products on time no matter what.”

HARMAN Professional India supplied 12 JBL VRX932LA-1 Constant Curvature loudspeakers, along with two VRX915S subwoofers, two SRX712M stage monitor/utility loudspeakers and 10 Control 1 wall-mountable loudspeakers. The loudspeakers are driven by seven Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers. Additional system components include a dbx DriveRack 4800 Loudspeaker Management System, dbx 234 stereo crossover and dbx 231 dual-31-band equalizer. “We needed a system that provided high-quality sound with even coverage throughout the auditorium, and was easy to operate and be totally reliable once installed,” stated Pansare.

The speakers were deployed in a somewhat unusual manner, since no fill loudspeakers were specified for the balcony by the architects. The JBL VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers were placed to cover both the main auditorium floor and the balcony, with the upper line array elements in the cluster aimed at the balcony and operated at a higher volume than the rest of the speakers via the dbx DriveRack 4800. “This combination actually works so well that we don’t miss the presence of fill loudspeakers at all,” Pansare pointed out.

The system was calibrated using HARMAN HiQnet Audio Architect™ software. Pansare noted that Audio Architect enables him to optimize a system to its full potential, and makes the process faster and easier than by any other means he’s used previously. The result was all Zillion Solutions hoped for and more. “The engineers from Pune Municipal Corporation were highly impressed with the sound quality and performance of the system and its ability to deliver even coverage and clear, intelligible audio throughout the auditorium.”

Pansare proudly noted, “Because of the hard work and dedication of our team and the support that HARMAN provided, the system was working a day earlier than we promised.”

Philadelphia Funk Authority Displays True Multitasking Skills With HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 Console

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Catering to weddings, private events, festivals, clubs and concerts in and around the tri-state area, Philadelphia Funk Authority comprises hardworking individuals whose passion is playing funk, soul and R&B music from the ‘70s to today. Since the band’s members all maintain regular jobs during the day, it opted for a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 console to mix its shows from the stage, foregoing the need for extensive technical training on a difficult-to-use console.

Heading up the technical department for the band is Andrew Kowal, a trumpet player who has been a musician for 30 years. While taking on the responsibilities of an onstage mixer, he needed an intuitive console that allowed him and the band members to simultaneously control the sound dynamics of the show and their own performances. The Si Expression 2 was chosen for its effortless workflow, flexible outputs, and the ability to mix on the fly.

“While onstage, I can operate the console and other band members can tweak their monitor mixes, meaning that we required an intuitive solution that could keep up with our dynamic pace,” said Kowal. “Having 24 channels is very comfortable for a 9-piece band with four lead singers and three horns, but having the flexibility to mix five discrete monitors at the same time while playing music is great!”

After acquiring the Si Expression 2, the band members noticed how much less gear they needed to transport to each show. With the Si Expression 2, no longer were they required to juggle additional racks and outboard equipment, resulting in a setup time of less than an hour. Even an extra feed into a house PA system only takes a couple of minutes to set up.

“I love everything about the console, especially the FaderGlowTM feature, because it’s so nice to light up only the faders that are in effect, so I don’t need to waste time on finding the right faders,” said Kowal. “I like having instant access to the graphic EQ, filters, compressors, as it makes everything so much easier and faster. Basically, everything improved for us overnight.”

MONTREAL, August 19, 2014Sliq Media Technologies announces that the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has selected its Harmony Suite to automatically record, transcribe and stream parliamentary proceedings, minimizing labor costs and workflow errors associated with legacy transcription processes.

The Sliq solution transitions the Parliament to an automated workflow that reduces the time required to create official public records. The automated workflow will streamline their existing process, reducing the Legislature’s reliance on traditional stenography for transcriptions. The upgrade will also add cross-platform streaming capabilities for the first time, broadening the delivery of legislative content across multiple consumer devices, including web and mobile targets. Collectively, the marriage of Hansard workflow and cross-platform webcasting delivers a unified service to the public that to date has not existed for the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago.

“The use of stenography technology in government meetings continues to diminish as more efficient tools become available to create public records,” said Sanjiv Menezes, president, Sliq Media Technologies. “Sliq provides an all-in-one, easy-to-use solution that combines transcription tools and cross-platform streaming to establish a far more efficient workflow with reliable results.”

The Sliq Harmony Suite enhances the user experience with cross-workflow indexing tools that deliver all relevant information from parliamentary proceedings alongside video and audio streams. While Sliq’s Razorback multi-channel encoders capture HD-quality (H.264) video and pristine audio streams, Harmony’s time stamped indexing tools ensure that content associated with parliamentary proceedings is uniformly presented alongside webcasts. This guarantees that all relevant legislative content, including speakers and orders of the day, is made available to constituents in one place, with simple access to specific points of interest.

The agreement includes video support at two venues and single-track audio support at three venues. Sliq Hawkeye tools will provide monitoring of all video and audio levels across the workflow, helping staff centrally monitor performance parameters for quality assurance—and quickly react to rare troubleshooting issues via diagnostics and alerting tools.

“This project advances our Caribbean presence to three countries, and we are in active discussions with several nearby countries that have recognized the efficiency and quality gains of neighboring nations that have transitioned to the Sliq platform,” said Nic Côté, VP, Business Development for Sliq. “The launch of the Harmony Suite for the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago also gives us an opportunity to go back this winter and enjoy a warm meal with our customers at Husseins Restaurant!”

NRJ TV Finds Versatile Solution in HARMAN Studer Vista 1 Digital Console

PARIS, France – NRJ TV has recently purchased a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 digital console for its television control room. NRJ TV has a television control room and two studios to manage the production of its NRJ 12 channels, Chérie 25 and NRJ Hits. Both channels broadcast news and live shows every day.

According to Cédric Drapeau, Technical Manager, it was important to upgrade to a console that could sustain the network’s production growth. “We have a variety of programming that takes place here at NRJ 12 and Chérie 25, so we need equipment that provides a high level of versatility to meet our varying needs,” he said.

To that end, NRJ chose the Studer Vista 1 digital console, which fits perfectly into the network’s technical environment.

The audio configuration of the two studios is based on an EtherSound network, allowing for easy routing and management of signals between the two TV studios and the control table. The Vista 1 has an EtherSound connection that can control over 32 inputs and 32 outputs to perfectly interface into the network.

The Vista 1 is highly suited to broadcast applications, with an integral DSP engine of 96 channels. The Vista 1 can handle mono, stereo and 5.1 inputs with ease, and is provided with 32 mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs and eight stereo AES inputs and outputs on rear panel connections.

The Vista 1 contains many of the same features as its larger brother, the Vista 5, including the patented Vistonics™ user interface plus features such as true broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control, GPIO, N-x (Mix Minus) busses, snapshot automation and DAW control.

The Vista 1’s I/O can be expanded using the standard Studer D21m I/O controller’s card slot on the rear, to allow a wide range of protocols including MADI, AES, AoIP, ADAT, TDIF, CobraNet, Dolby E/Digital and SDI connections. A MADI link can connect to any of the Studer Stagebox range for XLR connectivity as well as other formats.
