University of Arizona Boosts Live Sports Production Control Room with Tightrope Media Systems

ZEPLAY slow motion instant replay system brings new life to venues during game action

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, July 16, 2012 – The University of Arizona’s rich sports tradition and heritage dates to the early 1900s, with 18 NCAA Championship titles to its name among many other titles and awards. The university recently overhauled its live sports production capabilities to more closely align with the grandeur of its sports tradition, transitioning its aging analog control room to an all-digital, HD-capable environment.

Director of Video and Information Technology Matt George oversaw the project, carefully choosing the components that would bring his control room vision to life. He selected Tightrope Media SystemsZEPLAY slow-motion instant replay system to inject fresh excitement into home Wildcats games, including football, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.

“My main focus is to promote the teams and create an environment for the fans where they will continue to support our events,” said George. “ZEPLAY helps us put on a show that rivals what viewers at home are watching on TV.”

George wound up purchasing two units for the price of a single competitive system he was evaluating — and with more features and capabilities per unit. Each ZEPLAY provides eight channels of live replay (four in, four out), a built-in multiviewer for studying angles, and extensive tagging options to assist with storage, recall and lightning-fast highlight package creation.

“We build profiles for each sport, and operators can just pull down the home team, type in the player number and use a hot button to tag a play,” he said. “This is especially ideal in basketball, where fans are close to the action. We can throw together a quick player highlight package after a scoring spurt to keep the crowd juiced during breaks. We couldn’t do that without ZEPLAY’s tagging options.”

Ease of use has also been a major advantage. George adds that he can — and has — put a non-technical person in front of the system in the pinch.

“We don’t have a huge budget for production, so we utilize a lot of student and freelance labor,” said George. “I can assign a camera guy who has never run replay for a basketball game and get decent results. It’s not a simple system — it does everything we want it to do — but it’s simple to operate, and it’s very robust and powerful. And things like the built-in multiviewer are a great cost-saver to me as it provides extra information, and features like color outlines and camera titling. Most of the products we looked at gave us the angle and nothing else.”

Systems integration company AVR worked closely with George and his team on design initiatives for the control room and installed all systems, recognizing the clear benefits of including ZEPLAY in the overall solution.

“The ZEPLAY solution was a significant value engineering choice as it literally provided double the bang for the buck in its feature set — and with change to spare,” said Jim Mauger, director of engineering, AVR. “It’s rare today to see so much quality and reliability for less money. All of this combined to help us provide a winning solution.”

AVR also added new routers, switching and audio equipment for the new control room among other systems, while running fiber connections to new digital scoreboards in the venues — the same scoreboards that now enliven the venue environments in cooperation with the ZEPLAY systems. The complete solution gives George and his staff a powerful set of live production tools to keep the fans coming back.

“The new control room is an improvement over the previous one in the way that driving a jalopy on a racetrack would compare to a brand new Corvette,” said George.

Tightrope Media Systems Amplifies the Carousel Digital Signage Experience

New dynamic bulletin and reporting features, integration with Zeplay instant replay solution boost operational and entertainment options

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, May 30, 2012 – The digital signage universe continues to mature in the public eye, giving businesses, universities and other verticals an increasingly recognized visual platform to engage customers and enliven public spaces.

Tightrope Media Systems comes to InfoComm 2012 (June 13-15, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth N2257) with new developments to its Carousel digital signage system that deliver a richer experience for viewers, and new creative and reporting capabilities for end users. The advances integrate smoothly into the existing Carousel system, retaining its installation- and user-friendly characteristics for systems integrators.

Dynamic Bulletins
The web-centric Carousel solution is renowned for location-based data, delivering weather and other relevant information to local viewers. At InfoComm 2012, Tightrope extends local weather options, supporting multi-day forecast creation (up to seven days) and text-based crawls from WeatherBug. Carousel operators can build forecasts with temperature information and graphics to visualize the sun, clouds, rain and other climate conditions.

Increased multi-lingual support is a significant new Carousel development, with right-to-left text for Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi languages; and Asian-language word-wrapping for Japanese, Korean and simplified/traditional Chinese. Carousel also now displays international date formats by location, supporting EDS and date/time display among others.

Tightrope also addresses social media and digital signage integration at InfoComm 2012 through live Twitter feed support, allowing operators to publish tweets alongside RSS and other data-based feeds in any screen zone.

Built-in location-based services ensure that the correct forecasts, languages and social media feeds are delivered to the right screens across larger networks.

Stadium Excitement
Tightrope will also demonstrate Carousel integration with its ZEPLAY Instant Replay Server for stadium environments. Operators using the integrated solution can trigger instant replays of touchdowns, home runs and other thrilling moment from an iPad interface for immediate translation to Carousel-driven displays.

Digital signage operators in the stadium following the game action can press an icon to launch the iPad application. The application triggers an XML data string, which translates replays from the main stadium display, such as a Jumbotron, to one or more digital signage displays. This is especially ideal for fans that missed the live action, allowing them to view replays of big moments on menu boards at the concession stands, for example.

Emergency Notification
Digital signage gives corporate offices, school campuses and other locations a dynamic informational and entertainment tool — and can bring additional value when used for security and public safety.

Carousel now supports the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) that is being implemented across campuses and organizations nationwide. CAP allows a large university, corporate or other campus to implement simultaneous emergency messaging across a variety of platforms — using the same protocol that triggers alerts via SMS/text, AM radio, cable television EAS and outdoor warning devices for Carousel digital signage systems.

Reporting and Data Management
There is an undeniable creative element to working with digital signage that injects a sense of excitement into the content that ultimately reaches the consumer. However, someone still needs to manage the data and understand how the results affect business and operations.

At InfoComm, Tightrope adds a report publishing module to Carousel to export all bulletin-related metadata. This allows users to intelligently filter information related to status, schedules and impression data — a key benefit for sponsors on advertising-supported networks. Users export CSV reports of each bulletin, and flexibly adjust bulletin filters as needed to include only the information required at that time. Users can select from a list of all active and current bulletins across each screen zone.

Technomad Expands Integrator and End User Options for PowerChiton Amplifiers

Localized control and connections, streaming audio support offer progressive solutions to enhance outdoor audio installations

BOSTON, May 15, 2012Technomad introduces several new product accessories at InfoComm 2012 to complement its advanced audio solutions range. The innovative tools give systems integrators and end users flexible new options to simplify Technomad installations in stadiums, on college campuses and across other indoor/outdoor facilities.

At InfoComm (June 13-15, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth C12033), Technomad introduces a weatherproof breakout box and Apple AirPort Express audio streaming compatibility for its range of PowerChiton amplifier modules. The company will also show a new stainless steel mounting solution for its high-power weatherproof loudspeaker models.

“Technomad is always seeking ways to increase the range of applications for our products, and make life easier for systems integrators by innovating solutions that address installation challenges in the field,” said Rodger von Kries, vice president, Technomad.

PowerChiton Breakout Box
The PowerChiton range of passively-cooled, IP66-rated weatherproof amplifier modules — available in four power levels up to 1600 watts — have grown increasingly popular in outdoor audio projects where installers wish to co-locate amplification with loudspeakers, from athletic field complexes to university campus mass notification systems. The compact and low profile of PowerChiton amplifier modules — along with the rugged, weatherproof design — enables sound contractors to easily install the modules on light poles and other surfaces at any height.

Technomad now introduces a specialized PowerChiton breakout box that enables local audio control at user-friendly locations in the same NEMA-style protective enclosure. Contractors can install the breakout box at eye level, for example, allowing end users to adjust volume and connect a handheld microphone or an iPod on the fly.

The PowerChiton breakout box, which begins shipping July 1, includes mic and line level inputs, a four-channel mixer, an accessory cord and mounting hardware. The breakout box also enables remote installations, such as athletic fields without a press box or other protected location, to benefit from permanently-installed, PowerChiton-based PA systems. A coach or announcer can walk up to the breakout box, open it and be speaking through the PA or playing music within seconds.

“Installers typically only open PowerChiton amplifiers to hard-wire connections and set levels, and then screw the box shut for dependable, permanent installations,” said von Kries. “The PowerChiton breakout box is designed for ongoing user adjustments, with easy and direct access to controls and the capacity to store an audio player and microphone. It also provides a local audio source to make announcements and connect an iPod or other playout device.”

Technomad also now supports AirPlay capability from PowerChiton for Apple AirPort Express users. This allows commercial and residential customers to wirelessly stream iTunes audio files and playlists to an AirPort Express unit within a PowerChiton amplifier or breakout box. Users require only the hardware and a basic network or Wi-Fi connection to wirelessly stream audio from a computer or playout device to the PowerChiton — reducing costs and infrastructure associated with traditional wiring and cabling.

New Wall Mount Solution
Technomad is now shipping a new stainless steel wall mount for its AS Series of weatherproof, advanced audio loudspeakers. The AS Series consists of the largest and most powerful Technomad loudspeakers, including the Noho and all Berlin models (broad and narrow-dispersion).

Unlike older styles, the new Technomad wall mount accessory allows installers to position any AS Series loudspeaker vertically or horizontally. The stainless steel design prevents weather-related erosion over time, and pole-mount adaption simplifies lighting and telephone pole installations.

Technomad will also show a range of existing advanced audio solutions, including its ultra-lightweight DragonFly remote audio system; and its Schedulon audio playback and recording system.

Technomad and Onyx AudioVisual Upgrade Woodberry Forest School Sound Systems

Integrator chooses all-in-one Technomad Turnkey PA System to reproduce high-quality voice and music indoors at Virginia school

BOSTON, APRIL 2, 2012Woodberry Forest School, situated on the banks of the Rapidan River near Charlottesville, Virginia, is an historic boy’s prep school situated on 1200 acres of land that once belonged to General William Madison, the brother of President James Madison. Using Technomad advanced audio solutions, the school has upgraded sound systems in two athletic facilities in alignment with campus-wide building preservation efforts.

Onyx AudioVisual, a Virginia-based IT consulting company with expertise in audio/video, network infrastructure and lighting, designed and integrated the new sound systems. The company chose a Technomad Turnkey PA System to bring multiple loudspeakers and all required signal processing systems together into a single, integrated solution.

The complete system, deployed in a 70-volt configuration to accommodate lengthy cable runs across four zones, reproduces intelligible voice and high-quality music over long distances for athletic meets, games and other activities in both areas. The installations include 11 Technomad Vernal loudspeakers in the pool area and 10 in the Reily Wrestling Room, delivering high-fidelity sound and broad audio dispersion from a compact form factor.

Onyx AudioVisual also chose Technomad for its rugged, weatherproof loudspeaker designs. The project required environmentally tough loudspeakers that could withstand the humidity and moisture associated with indoor pool environments.

Bart Cardea, sales director for Onyx AudioVisual, said his team balanced perfect audio detail inside the pool area and the wrestling room to achieve pristine athletic event sound. The upgrades substantially improve sound quality around the galleries, bleachers, pool and mats to help spectators follow the action during events.

“The sound needed to be excellent quality for sports writers, fans and athletes,” said Cardea. “We needed to preserve the historic integrity of the areas, while delivering state-of-the-art sound technology. We chose Technomad because of their reputation for superior sound, easy setup and environmental durability. They exceeded our specifications for sound while meeting the environmental challenges we faced.”

Cardea added that the Technomad Turnkey PA System design established a new central audio headend from which all cable runs originate. Technomad Turnkey PA Systems include a pre-wired amplifier, six-channel mixer, cables, connectors and open rack space for audio source equipment — all delivered in a compact, durable equipment rack.

Technomad Makes Loudspeakers with Heat from the Sun

Sustainable process improves quality while significantly reducing costs and carbon footprint

BOSTON, March 13, 2012Technomad redefines sustainable AV with a new partnership that brings solar technology to its already-green plastic loudspeaker manufacturing process. The move slices production costs up to 30 percent while reducing the company’s carbon footprint — and introduces a revolutionary process to the professional audio and AV space.

Technomad has long been associated with sustainable manufacturing, producing durable, weatherproof MilSpec loudspeakers using recycled plastic. As a result, Technomad loudspeakers are often specified into AV projects with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) requirements.

Technomad recently teamed up with LightManufacturing LLC, which developed a unique-patent-pending method of molding plastic with solar heat. The company’s unique Solar Rotational Molding (SRM™) systems eliminate greenhouse gasses associated with traditional rotational molding while reducing manufacturing costs — an unusual combination in a world that equates ‘green’ with unaffordable.

LightManufacturing now molds most of Technomad’s popular Vienna and Vernal loudspeakers at its California facility, with larger models to follow.

“Technomad is the first company in the professional audio industry to take advantage of solar thermal energy,” said Rodger von Kries, vice president of Technomad. “We’ve always worked on the cutting edge of green manufacturing, being the first company to use 100 percent recycled plastic to make loudspeaker cabinets. The LightManufacturing partnership brings new advantages by reducing our costs while benefitting the environment.”

LightManufacturing’s SRM process uses computer-controlled mirrors to concentrate heat from the sun onto a mold and melt the plastic inside. The sun’s thermal energy is used directly, avoiding the costs of making electricity with photovoltaic panels. The process delivers higher quality parts at a lower cost than traditional rotational molding, with typical savings of 10 to 30 percent. The nearly silent SRM systems use no natural gas or external AC power, and the hardware costs less than traditional rotational molding systems.

“This partnership shows that the solar molding process can deliver high-quality, reduced-cost parts for manufacturers right out of the gate,” said Mark Severy, a consultant at LightManufacturing. “Technomad came to us with a 15 year history of making world-class products. We met their requirements for outstanding quality, lower cost — and zero carbon emissions.”

ABOUT LIGHT MANUFACTURING
LightManufacturing LLC’s unique process re-invents rotational molding and other plastic molding processes through the use of solar thermal energy. The company works with equipment builders, plastic molders, large-scale end-users of plastic components, governments and NGOs to create sustainable and economically-competitive manufacturing solutions. Please call 415-796-6475 or e-mail newclient@lightmanufacturingllc.com for more information.

Technomad Mass Notification System Powers Outdoor Audio at Western Washington University

Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers and PowerChiton amplifiers deliver intelligible voice to three outdoor zones on campus

BOSTON, February 22, 2012Western Washington University‘s sprawling campus in scenic Bellingham stretches 215 acres, with nearly 15,000 students walking the grounds during the fall and spring semesters. The university gives prominence to campus safety, recently upgrading its fire alarm system in 47 buildings and adding a mass notification system to improve audio quality and long-distance coverage.

Mills Electric Co., a Bellingham-based electrical and systems contractor serving the commercial and industrial markets, installed the multi-zone audio system in conjunction with Western Washington University support staff. Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers exclusively power three outdoor zones at campus-designated “gathering areas.”

Technomad PowerChiton high-power waterproof amplifier modules drive live and pre-recorded messages to the loudspeakers for campus-wide broadcast. The project also marries all indoor/outdoor PA points and associated pan/tilt/zoom cameras to an existing Edwards EST-3 campus-wide fire alarm system, programmed and upgraded by Performance System Integration, an Edwards EST Life Safety and Communications Strategic Partner.

The complete system ties to a central network infrastructure, enabling administration, campus police and other offices to deliver voice notifications to any single location, multiple zones, or every PA point in an “all-call” scenario.

Cory Kovacevich, a service and project manager at Mills Electric Co., notes that the Technomad loudspeakers produce intelligible voice over long distances, ensuring that students, staff and visitors hear emergency notifications loud and clear. Each gathering area includes two Technomad Berlin 90×40 loudspeakers, mounted between 20 and 90 feet from the ground depending on the location. Weatherproof construction ensures long-term durability and protection from the outdoor elements in rainy northwest Washington.

Kovacevich adds that the PowerChiton modules deliver 500 watts of clean power to each Berlin loudspeaker in a simple, easy-to-install package. Though IP66-rated and designed for permanent outdoor installation, Kovacevich installed the PowerChitons indoors at the central audio headend for easier accessibility.

“The PowerChitons come in small, non-metallic enclosures and take up minimal space, which is important because we have limited room to add equipment,” says Kovacevich. “The PowerChitons tie directly to the fire alarm system, and are mounted next to the fire alarm panels. This keeps everything but the loudspeakers and cameras in one building.”

Kovacevich notes that the overall system represents a major upgrade for the campus, enabling text-to-speech translation and remote access to make announcements over the system from off campus — in addition to video integration, multi-zone capability and superior audio quality.

“The Berlins put out some serious sound,” says Kovacevich. “We had recently broadcast a test message from the rooftop and saw people more than 100 yards away stop, turn around and look directly toward the loudspeakers. The university is very happy with the power, sound quality and clarity of the voice.”
