Canon U.S.A. Introduces the EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W, Full HD Robotic Remote-Control Pan-Tilt-Zoom Indoor/Outdoor Cameras

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 10, 2013 – Building on the success of its line of cost-effective, remote-control HD pan-tilt-zoom cameras, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has introduced the durable EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W cameras, which provide improved image resolution, color reproduction, and Canon Auto Focus precision over previous models. Compact, fully integrated, and featuring an open control protocol for flexible systemization, the new EVERCAM XU cameras provide high-quality widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) image capture from practically any visual perspective.

The Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) HD cameras are equipped with a 20x Genuine Canon zoom lens (with additional 12x digital zoom), 2.1-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor, genlock input, and an HD-SDI output. Designed with a sturdy water-resistant/dustproof housing for indoor or outdoor use, applications for the new cameras include broadcast TV, houses of worship, sports arenas, schools, government, and performing arts venues. The Canon EVERCAM XU-81 W features a motorized ND filter and a wiper unit for outdoor applications.

“From sports stadiums, to traffic and weather POV cams, and houses of worship, there is an increasing demand for broadcast-quality, cost-effective remote-control HD image capture,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “Canon has successfully addressed this market with a series of versatile professional HD pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The latest introductions – the Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W pan-tilt-zoom HD cameras – deliver exceptional full HD resolution video, precise Canon Auto Focus, and great low-light performance ideally suited for most PTZ applications.”

Durable, Quick, and Quiet
The tough, durable housing of the Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W pan-tilt-zoom HD cameras meets the IP-55 enclosure rating for water-resistant and dustproof integrity, enabling it to be installed in environmentally challenging locations. The Canon EVERCAM XU-81 W is optimized for permanent outdoor installation and comes equipped with a wiper unit to maintain lens port clarity and a servo neutral density (ND) filter unit to optimize picture quality (an optional washer unit is also available). Both cameras are equipped with an integral weather-resistant microphone that allows for the capture of sound at the camera location.

Capable of fast, smooth, and highly precise movements while simultaneously panning and tilting at a maximum rate of 60˚/sec., the Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W cameras feature a pan range of ±180˚ and a tilt range of +220˚/-40˚. While quick and nimble, the cameras are also extremely quiet while in motion, with a maximum noise level of NC30. This makes the cameras well-suited for use in quiet environments where noise distractions are not permitted, including during broadcast, performance studios, lecture halls and classrooms, conference rooms, and hospital operating theaters.

Further adding to the versatility of the Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W pan-tilt-zoom HD cameras are their low-light capabilities and super sensitivity mode. When shooting under low-light conditions, the cameras can acquire extra brightness by using a slow-shutter (frame accumulation) function. The camera’s black & white mode, without the Infrared cut filter, will also support shooting in near-darkness. Dynamic Range Compensation allows for shooting in environments with a high contrast of light and shade (such as an office building lobby on a sunny day) by automatically correcting the contrast of the video according to the range of scene illumination. Both camera models have a sensitivity rating of 0.6lux (f/1.6, 1/60, 50IRE, +42dB).

In addition to providing clear, crisp HD video, the 2.1-Megapixel CMOS sensor in the Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W cameras delivers native imaging performance. A locally switchable output/control feature enables users to select either 1080i or 720p HD output (via a convenient HD-SDI connection) with simultaneous SD analog composite (NTSC or PAL) for monitoring. A genlock input on the XU-81 and XU-81 W provides the synchronization signal necessary for TV station use and other broadcast applications.

Remote control of the pan, tilt, and zoom movements of the EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W cameras employs a non-proprietary control protocol that enables users and system integrators to interface the camera with their own control system, or that of a range of third-party providers. Control can be toggled between RS-232 and RS-422, making the cameras extremely adaptable to new and existing multi-camera environments.

Compact and lightweight, the EVERCAM XU-81 camera weighs only 14.5 pounds, and the EVERCAM XU-81 W camera weighs only 15.5 pounds. The cameras include a built-in handle for convenient portability, and can be mounted upright or in an inverted ceiling mount. In either position, the picture image will automatically flip when the tilt angle reaches 90˚.

Pricing and Availability
The Canon EVERCAM XU-81 and EVERCAM XU-81 W pan-tilt-zoom HD cameras are expected to be available in September 2013, for the estimated retail price of $11,000.00 and $13,000.00, respectively.

Canon U.S.A. Defines a New Category of Pro AV Compact Installation Projectors with the Introduction of New REALiS Models

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has introduced a new multimedia projector category that combines the exceptional picture quality of larger installation projectors with the plug-and-play convenience of portable models. Known as Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) Projectors, this new Canon product category consists of the Canon REALiS WUX450, REALiS WUX400ST, REALiS WX520, and REALiS WX450ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors. All feature a trim design under 14 lbs. each, installation flexibility, easy set-up, and sophisticated operational advantages strategically designed for higher education, boardroom installations, museums, and many other professional markets.

Drawing on Canon’s expertise in optical and imaging technologies, the new Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors feature newly designed built-in Genuine Canon projection lenses engineered to address a broad range of image-display requirements. The new Canon REALiS WUX450 and REALiS WX520 Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors offer placement flexibility with their advanced Genuine Canon projection lens that delivers a consistent fixed aperture of f/2.8 allowing for no light loss across its entire 1.8x zoom range. Designed for short-throw use, the new Canon REALiS WUX400ST and REALiS WX450ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors are equipped with an advanced Genuine Canon 1.35x zoom lens with generous horizontal and vertical lens-shift adjustability for distortion-free image quality in environments where the projector must be located close to the screen or display surface.

“Canon’s new REALiS WUX450, REALiS WUX400ST, REALiS WX520, and REALiS WX450ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors blend the high-quality and exceptional detail, clarity and contrast of large projector models with the portability of smaller models,” explained Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “The demand for installation projectors is growing across many professional markets, and Canon is demonstrating its commitment to these users by developing this entirely new category of the Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors, which integrate the latest technologies to provide exceptional user benefits, convenience, and affordability.”

All of Canon’s new Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors employ a new Canon AISYS 5.0 optical engine that helps improve the management of light through the projectors’ next-generation Canon LCOS display panels. The result is the projection of high-resolution images with intricate detail, crisp contrast, high brightness, deep blacks, precise color, and reduced blur during fast-moving movie scenes. The REALiS WUX450 and REALiS WUX400ST deliver WUXGA (1920 x1200) resolution imagery with 4500 and 4000 lumens of brightness, respectively. The REALiS WX520 and REALiS WX450ST provide WXGA+ (1440 x 900) resolution imagery with 5200 and 4500 lumens, respectively. All models deliver a 2000:1 contrast ratio, 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio images, versatile connectivity and management controls, sophisticated image-processing and edge-blending capabilities, energy efficiency, and a lower total cost of ownership as compared to previous models.

Markets for the new Canon REALiS WUX450, REALiS WUX400ST, REALiS WX520, and REALiS WX450ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors include large classrooms, lecture halls, and auditoriums, houses of worship, museums and galleries, corporate boardrooms and conference rooms, ad agencies and photo studios, video and motion picture post-production facilities, training simulators, government command and control rooms, medical training and conference rooms, and videoconferencing sites.

Installation Flexibility
Approximately 25 percent smaller than previous Canon Pro AV Series projectors, the new projectors feature a new heat-exhaust design and a flat chassis which allows for a wide variety of installation-placement choices. Optional feet can be installed on the top of each projector for inverted ceiling-type mounts. Two units can be stacked to double light output, yet still fit into a compact space. The 1.8x zoom lens built into the REALiS WUX450 and REALiS WX520 includes a mechanical lens-shift feature for increased installation flexibility, enabling both projectors to be installed vertically, pointing up or downwards.

The REALiS WUX400ST and REALiS WX450ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors for short-throw environments include a built-in 1.35x distortion-free zoom lens and a 0-75 percent vertical and ± 10 percent horizontal lens-shift adjustment feature. This combination enables these projectors to be used for short-throw display applications, including both front- and rear-projection installations. Short-throw projection applications can include environments where the presenter and the display screen must be in close proximity because of room size, design, or other unique factors, such as a ceiling that is too low for mounting a projector.

Canon’s new Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors have a long-life lamp that provides up to 4000 hours of operation. Easy access lamp and filter covers help simplify lamp replacement and filter cleaning, even while installed. Power consumption for the REALiS WUX450 and REALiS WX520 projectors equals less than .081 watts per lumen at its brightest mode.

Imaging Versatility
Although integrating many unique technologies, the new Canon REALiS WUX450, REALiS WX520, REALiS WX450ST, and REALiS WUX400ST Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors are simple to operate and provide easy set-up features. These can be accessed using a configurable control panel on the side of each unit and by using the projected installation and professional-settings menus. The extensive image-processing capabilities of these projectors provide multiple user benefits. These include a dozen built-in test patterns (triggered via the remote control unit and user-accessible onscreen menus) for fast, simple image calibration without the need for a pattern generator or a PC. An innovative four-point keystone-adjustment function enables users to adjust each corner of the image independently while also keeping focus consistent, and to achieve true diagonal projection as well as moiré reduction.

An easy-to-use built-in edge-blend function with precision luminance ramp adjustment and pixel-overlap control enables the new Canon Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors to be used in multi-projector configurations for the display of large, seamless images with precisely matched edges. Easy registration adjustment for perfect edge-blend alignment is further enabled by the combination of the low “TV distortion” characteristics of the projectors’ zoom lenses and an integrated micro digital lens shift adjustment (a separate feature from the projectors’ mechanical lens-shift adjustment capability). The result is pixel-precise image blending for seamless multi-projector displays.

Advanced Management and Connectivity
Built into the new Canon Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors is a full suite of networking features, including full control over IP and content streaming. An Ethernet (LAN) interface enables advanced remote control and monitoring capabilities including power management, usage tracking, and other control functions. The REALiS WUX450, REALiS WX520, REALiS WX450ST, and REALiS WUX400ST are Crestron RoomView™-compatible.

Key networking features also include a content-streaming capability, which allows one or more PCs to connect to a projector over a standard LAN to share content. This NMPJ (Network Multi Projection) system has the ability to display content from four different PC’s on a single screen. Content can be streamed from any point with a network connection to a projector, either within a room or in multiple locations, simplifying installation. The NMPJ system allows for video streaming (without audio) through the LAN to the projector in four ways:
• Meeting mode – to share a participant’s screen with everyone (or share between remote sites via the Internet).
• Classroom mode – allows an instructor to select which PC screen to project; up to four PC screens can be shown simultaneously.
• Broadcast mode – images can be projected at multiple sites simultaneously.
• Direct mode – enables a projector to be connected directly to a PC using a LAN cable.

Input terminals on the new Canon Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projectors include a USB port for “PC-less” presentations of JPEGs and other content directly from a thumb drive or other USB-equipped flash-memory data storage device (and for firmware updates). Other inputs include DVI, component video, HDMI, and two mini-jack audio inputs. A special Picture-by-Picture Processor allows for the simultaneous use of HDMI and DVI in split-screen mode. A 5-watt mono speaker is built-in for audio playback without peripheral components.

The Canon REALiS WUX450, REALiS WX520, REALiS WUX400ST, and REALiS WX450ST are also available in “D” versions (REALiS WUX450 D Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projector, REALiS WX520 D ProAV Compact Installation Projector, REALiS WUX400ST D Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projector and REALiS WX450ST D Pro AV Compact Installation LCOS Projector) featuring a DICOM® Simulation mode and superb 21-step grayscale gradation display capabilities designed to effectively project high-quality medical images such as X-rays, CAT scans and MRIs. Please note, these models are not cleared or approved for medical diagnosis and should not be used for diagnosis purposes.

Canon U.S.A. Introduces Ultra-Portable Three LED Projector for Business and Home Entertainment Use

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has introduced its first ultra-portable projector ideal for both business and home entertainment use – the Canon LE-5W Multimedia Projector. Featuring high image quality and bright, vibrant color projection, the affordable and lightweight LE-5W can clearly display everything from spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations to video games and movies through its wide range of interconnectivity and multiple connection ports.

With HDMI input and five different projection modes, the Canon LE-5W projector can easily be used to project high-quality movies, video games, and still-or-streamed images from PC’s, Blu-ray players, game consoles, HD streaming players, and digital cameras onto nearly any surface. The perfect projector to bring along for off-site presentations and client visits, professional and home use, or even camping trips, the LE-5W also enables “PC-less” smart presentations directly from a USB thumb drive, SD card, or its own built-in 1.5GB memory. Featuring an energy-saving, long-life 3LED technology, the unit’s three LED’s (RGB) have a remarkable 20,000 hour lifespan with an ECO mode that consumes 30 percent less energy than while running in Normal Mode.

“The enormous growth in the use of tablet PC’s and mobile devices has created demand for a new kind of high-quality, affordable projector that easily integrates with tablet PC’s and AV equipment while also being ultra-portable and easy-to-use,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “The new Canon LE-5W Multimedia Projector is the perfect traveling companion for small business users who need to quickly and vividly share presentations or other visual information with clients.”

Multiple Projection Scenarios
The LE-5W Multimedia Projector employs 3LED technology to project vibrant and accurate colors. Because the LED light source for each primary color (red, green, and blue) is used without splitting light through a color wheel, images and video with pure, highly vibrant colors can be projected. Five different projection modes suit a diverse array of user needs:
• Presentation mode – this default mode matches the colors generally displayed by the screens of PCs and notebook computers.
• Standard mode – designed for optimal projection in rooms with minimal ambient light.
• Movie mode – delivers saturated colors, and is perfect for presentation in darkened rooms.
• sRGB mode – optimized for the colors as seen in a calibrated sRGB color space. This mode is best used for displaying graphics, AutoCAD diagrams, and other computer-calibrated presentations involving critical colors.
• User mode – enables customized settings of brightness, contrast, color, tint, temperature, and even sharpness.

Weighing just 3.5 lbs. and delivering 500 lumens of brightness with WXGA (1280 x 800) native resolution, a contrast ratio of 3000:1 and superb color fidelity, the LE-5W features a throw ratio (1.2:1) that achieves large-screen projections even in tight spaces. The Canon LE-5W is equipped with two built-in 2.5-watt stereo speakers, and a five-color wall-projection mode that makes practically any flat surface a suitable display screen. Also excellent for point-of-purchase digital signage applications, the LE-5W features a ¼ 20 Tripod Mounting Socket on its base, helping to make projection in tight locations without a tabletop possible.

The Canon LE-5W Multimedia Projector’s built-in USB thumb drive and SD card slots, and its own built-in 1.5GB memory, enable it to play multimedia files without peripheral components. Supported formats include: MJPEG, MPEG1/2/4, H.264, WMV, and RMVB video; JPEG and BMP photos; MP3, OGG, WMA, AAC, and WAV music; and Adobe PDF 1.2-1.7 and Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) documents.

The Canon LE-5W powers-up in four seconds and shuts down in less than one second, and measuring just 9.76” (w) x 7.60” (d) x 2.16” (h), the ultra-portable projector can easily fit in a carrying bag for on-the-go scenarios. The projector features an integrated lens cover and built-in power adaptor, and sports a clean design with a scratch-resistant finish. The LE-5W is available in black or white to match the décor of any location.

The Canon LE-5W Multimedia Projector will be available in the Summer of 2013, for an estimated retail price of $799.00. For more information about the Canon LE-5W Multimedia Projector, including a full list of product specifications, visit www.usa.canon.com/projectors.

Canon Megapixel IP Security Cameras Provide Comprehensive Video Coverage for The Ricardo Montalbán Foundation Theatre

Located in the heart of Hollywood, California, The Ricardo Montalbán Foundation Theatre is a venue for diverse cultural events. A well-equipped 1,000-seat facility, its security system includes several 1.3-megapixel IP security cameras from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions. The cameras are mounted on exterior and interior locations of the theatre, which is named after the late actor and performing-arts patron Ricardo Montalbán.

“Security is a concern in any busy urban area, and when you’re moving large groups of people in and out, it’s paramount for maintaining the confidence of both patrons and staff,” noted Gil Smith, chairman of the Montalbán Foundation Theatre. “We have an iconic 1926 Broadway-style theatre building, and graffiti and vandalism are continuing challenges. We want to maintain a positive environment here, and video surveillance provides documentation after the fact. If there’s an indication of some incident, you can go back and review the footage. This video information provides for better communication with both the community and the police.”

Veteran Los Angeles area security equipment specialists Post Alarm Systems handled installation and integration of the Canon megapixel IP security cameras, which include: VB-M600VE fixed vandal resistant dome cameras for the exterior of the building, VB-M600D indoor dome cameras, and VB-M700F “box-style” cameras. Plans call for a VB-M40 PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera to also be mounted to the outside of the building for wide-angle street views captured with its built-in Genuine Canon 20x zoom lens. All Canon megapixel IP security cameras are ONVIF conformant to ensure network interoperability.

“My first concern in choosing security cameras was picture quality, and I knew of Canon’s reputation for digital technology in its consumer and professional products,” Smith recalled. “Canon is a world leader in optics and image-making, so my instinct was to look very seriously at their IP security cameras. I think it was a very good decision to go in that direction.”

From Dark to Bright
The VB-M600VE, VB-M600D, and VB-M700F feature Genuine Canon optical zoom lenses, a 1.3-megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS image sensor, and a sophisticated Canon DIGIC NET image processor for excellent low-light performance. A Smart Shade Control feature automatically adjusts the contrast between bright and dark areas of the image to enhance the detail display. A special Night Mode provides increased low-light sensitivity over the standard recording mode.

“The theatre presents a lot of challenges for maintaining good picture levels,” Smith informed. “Conditions range from the darkest dark on our theater stage, to the hottest hot in bright outdoor sunlight. Our entry court has deep, dark corners that turn into bright sunlit areas as the day progresses. The dynamic range that I’m seeing from these Canon IP cameras, from highlights to shadows, is amazing. The edge control from the sharpness of the Canon lens, and the way the images are processed, is much better than what I’ve seen from other security camera systems.”

Remote Adjustment Function
In addition to their exceptional 1.3 megapixel imaging, the networked Canon IP security cameras at the Montalbán Theatre also feature Canon’s Remote Adjustment Function, which enables integrators and installers to remotely change the viewpoint, zoom, and focus of these fixed cameras after installation remotely from any Internet-connected PC, without removing the camera’s dome cover. Viewpoint adjustments to the image-capture area of these stationary cameras include their pan, tilt, and rotation angles. Access to the camera with a ladder or bucket truck becomes unnecessary, which eliminates the time and expense of on-site adjustments involving labor, transportation, and equipment. This feature is especially handy for large installations of multiple Canon IP security cameras.

“Using Canon megapixel IP security cameras with the Remote Adjustment Feature saved us a good several hours per camera,” noted Rich Buchanan, account executive at Post Alarm Systems, which installed the cameras at the Montalbán Theatre. “I can go down in front of a web page and make some tweaks in five seconds that would have taken me at least an hour to do if I was already on-site. That’s a huge savings that adds up over and over again. The Remote Adjustment Function is definitely going to equate to happier customers, and having a happy customer is definitely going to equate to more referrals and recommendations of Canon products.”

Yet another built-in feature of all Canon megapixel IP security cameras that the Montalbán Foundation Theatre is also taking full advantage of is video analytics, which assists in detecting abandoned, moving, and removed objects. User-adjustable in terms of detection area, sensitivity, and duration, these analytics can trigger alarms. In addition, camera analytics can alert for abnormal sound levels and tampering that may indicate a camera is being vandalized.

“The Canon megapixel IP security cameras at the Montalbán Foundation Theatre are indispensable,” Smith concluded. “The image quality detail, color accuracy, corner-to-corner focus, and low-light performance they deliver are amazing. The system gives us the confidence that we can close the doors, walk away, and know that at any moment we can access our servers and the images that we are capturing 24/7. Canon is at the center of the digital revolution, and it has made high-quality imaging far more accessible.”

Similar to other lenses Canon provides for its REALiS Pro A/V Series projectors, the RS-IL04UL Ultra Long Focus Zoom Lens includes independently floating elements, helping to ensure minimal image quality change and light loss throughout the zoom length of the lens, thus greatly reducing the need to over-specify projector brightness to compensate for light loss. For example, the brightness of the Canon REALiS WUX4000 projector drops only 17% from the wide angle to the telephoto setting of the standard zoom lens, while competitive products can lose up to 35% of their brightness in making the same adjustment.

REALiS Pro A/V interchangeable lenses offer color accuracy and image quality that users look for from a fixed lens combined with the flexibility of optical zoom. All of the lens options in the REALiS Pro A/V series include features developed from Canon’s industry-leading EOS technology, including aspheric lens elements help to diminish distortion and an Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element to reduce chromatic aberration. The lenses are also similarly sized to fit within the body of the projector, allowing for easy installation, regardless of the desired throw distance, when using a lift.

The suggested list price of the RS-IL04UL Ultra Long Focus Zoom Lens is $3499 and it is scheduled to be available at the end of November.

All feature class-leading low-light performance, a Genuine Canon aspherical wide-angle zoom lens with optimal lens coating technology, a 2.1 Megapixel 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen CMOS image sensor, and a pair of proprietary Canon DIGIC processors: the powerful Canon DIGIC DV III image processor for exceptional picture quality with lifelike colors and tonal accuracy, reduced noise, and low power consumption; and the second-generation Canon DIGIC NET II network video processor, a powerful, highly efficient compression, encryption, and transmission engine for full 1920 x 1080 HD up to 30 fps simultaneously in both H.264 and M-JPEG.

Advanced Canon technology built into these four IP security cameras includes sophisticated analytic capabilities as well as ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile S conformance for improved compatibility with other ONVIF-compliant third-party security products.

“Canon leadership in HD imaging technologies enables the Company to leverage its vast expertise in developing IP security cameras with exceptional picture detail and advanced digital features,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “These new cameras provide outstanding imaging performance and sophisticated user benefits to address the needs of security professionals in a diverse range of applications and environments.”

High Definition, High Functionality
All four of Canon’s Full HD IP Security cameras are designed to capture high-resolution detail and color vital for obtaining crucial visual information for security purposes. Markets for these cameras include financial institutions, industrial plants and utilities, military and government agencies, airports and transportation centers, schools, retail establishments, and casinos. The advanced Canon DIGIC DV III image processor built into these IP security cameras optimizes image quality, providing Auto Gain Control, which limits the amount of gain added to the image to reduce “noise.” The new DIGIC NET II network video processor includes a multi-codec function for the simultaneous transmission of video in both H.264 and M-JPEG up to 30 frames per second. The Canon DIGIC NET II’s H.264 codec features an adjustable i-frame interval to optimize bandwidth and video-storage space. M-JPEG and H.264 can be output in multiple resolutions: 1920 x 1080, 960 x 540, and 480 x 270. M-JPEG can also be output at 320 x 240 QVGA resolution. The DIGIC NET II network video processor is also utilized for the cameras’ Smart Shade Control feature, which selectively brightens dark areas while maintaining accurate exposure of bright areas in high contrast scenes.

Each of the Full HD IP Security cameras also features built-in Video Analytics to assist in identifying potentially crucial details including moving, removed, and abandoned object detection as well as passing (or “tripwire”) detection. User-adjustable in terms of detection characteristics such as sensitivity, area and duration, Video Analytics can engage configured alarms and notification functions. Passing detection can, for example, issue an alert if a person or object moves past a user-preset line or polygon in the camera image, such as a doorway, window, driveway, or other boundary. All four cameras also feature Camera Analytics, which include detection of camera tampering and sound-level detection in the vicinity of the camera that may indicate vandalism or sabotage.

Additional features shared by the Canon VB-H41, VB-H610VE, VB-H610D, and VB-H710F Full HD IP Security cameras include a Privacy Mask function to block sensitive locations (such as ATM keypads or computer monitors) from the cameras’ view while still allowing for a full range of motion. The cameras also feature two-way audio connectors for bi-directional sound communication, built-in Management Tools, and a Web Viewer function for remote video monitoring by authorized users on supported web browsers such as 32-bit versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9. The cameras ship with RM-Lite 2.0, Canon’s free network video and recording software for up to four cameras. A built-in SD Memory Card slot (supporting SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards) allows users to record still images or H.264 video during network outages, scheduled event triggers, or manually through Admin viewer (VB Admin Tools are resident on each camera’s web server). An Auto IP feature can automatically assign each camera a private IP address, allowing for connectivity without configuring each cameras network setting.

A valuable new feature shared by all four new models is Viewer PTZ, which allows a computer operator to magnify video from the camera for an even closer look at specific image details. Due to the high quality of Full HD video, video quality remains usable even when magnified. In addition to Viewer PTZ, the VB-H610VE, VB-H610D, and VB-H710F models are equipped with Digital PTZ, which uses the camera to trim or crop sections of the Full HD video image. The cameras can then digitally encode and transmit just those cropped areas, saving bandwidth. Compared with streamed video that is magnified on a computer using the Viewer PTZ function, the Digital PTZ function can reduce the overhead for computers because the video cropped by the camera is streamed, resulting in smaller file sizes. Digital PTZ supports a 16:9 aspect ratio at multiple resolutions, including 640 x 360, 512 x 288, 256 x 144, and 128 x 72 pixels.

VB-H41
Featuring a completely new structural design for increased durability with improved bearings and a flexible-cable assembly, the Canon VB-H41 Full HD IP Security camera includes a best-in-class Genuine Canon 20x optical zoom lens with 12x digital zoom, a wide 60.4º angle of view, and an improved Auto Focus algorithm to improve focusing accuracy in various difficult shooting conditions. Working together with a built-in thermal sensor, the VB-H41 Auto Focus algorithm also corrects for temperature changes in the installation environment. An electronic Image Stabilization feature minimizes blur that can be caused by vibration in the installation base, and the VB-H41 supports select third-party USB joysticks for controlling PTZ and presets. The VB-H41 can capture potentially crucial image detail in low-illumination environments down to 0.4 lux at F1.6 and 1/30 sec. in color* and 0.02 lux at f/1.6 and 1/30 sec. in black & white.*

VB-H610VE
The VB-H610VE fixed vandal-resistant Full HD IP Security camera is housed in a clear polycarbonate dome mounted to an aluminum body; this unified enclosure has a dust and water-resistance rating of IP66. The enclosure can also absorb violent impacts. Inside the enclosure, the VB-H610VE lens is mounted in a damping mechanism to protect it against heavy blows. The camera is designed for use in areas that may be subject to abuse, such as correctional facilities, public transportation centers, shopping malls, and schools. An optional heater allows the camera to be used in temperatures down to -22º F. The VB-H610VE also features a built-in Genuine Canon 112.0º wide-angle 3x optical zoom lens for clear, high-quality images. The VB-H610VE (and VB-H610D and VB-H710F) can capture potentially crucial image detail in low-illumination environments down to 0.3 lux at F1.2 and 1/30 sec. in color* and 0.015 lux at f/1.2 and 1/30 sec. in black & white.*

VB-H610D
As with the VB-H610VE, this camera has a built-in Genuine Canon wide-angle 3x optical zoom lens with an ultra-wide 112.0º angle of view, making it ideal for use in areas with severe space restrictions such as stairways, narrow halls, and elevators, as well as vast, wide-open spaces such as shopping malls or factory floors. The lens’s sophisticated aspherical optical composition and optimal lens coating technology enables it to produce high-quality sharp images with minimal distortion and flare. The VB-H610D is a versatile fixed security indoor dome camera suited for many IP security applications. Both the VB-H610VE and VB-H610D cameras also include a Remote Adjustment Function to change the angle of view (including pan, tilt, rotation, zoom, and focus) of the cameras from any remote PC, thereby eliminating the time and expense of on-site adjustments involving labor, transportation, and equipment.

VB-H710F
Designed with a traditional rectangular “box” look, the Canon VB-H710F Full HD IP Security camera also features a built-in Genuine Canon wide-angle 3x optical zoom lens with an ultra-wide 112.0º angle of view. A unique feature of this camera is its built-in motorized focus and zoom function, which enables users to adjust those settings. Convenient and labor-saving, motorized focus and zoom is a major benefit for challenging and/or large installation environments.

Installation Advantages
The Canon VB-H41, VB-H610VE, VB-H610D, and VB-H710F Full HD IP Security camera are designed to facilitate convenient installation. All provide ONVIF Profile S conformance for improved compatibility with other ONVIF-compliant third-party security products. All four cameras can be powered either with 24VAC, 12VDC, or PoE (IEEE 802.3af conformant).

Pricing and Availability
The VB-H41 PTZ camera, VB-H610VE fixed vandal-resistant dome camera, VB-H610D fixed indoor dome camera, and VB-H710F fixed indoor “box” camera have suggested list prices of $2,899, $1,569, $1,289 and $1,159 respectively1. Initial shipments for all new models are scheduled to begin in December, 2012.

Canon HD Digital SLR Cameras Provide Documentary Filmmakers With Creative Freedom

Documentary filmmakers have long agreed that the more inconspicuous the camera, the more “truth” it can capture. The proliferation of compact, highly mobile video cameras during the past 20 years has proven this to be true, but many of today’s documentarians not only want a camera that won’t intimidate interviewees, they also want a camera that can capture imagery that’s more cinematic. The filmmakers behind two of this year’s Oscar-nominated documentaries achieved both goals by using digital SLR cameras from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions. Directors Danfung Dennis (Hell and Back Again) and Lucy Walker (The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom) recently discussed the advantages of their Canon digital SLR cameras during interviews at the International Documentary Association’s Los Angeles DocuDay event. Each documentary took advantage of a different EOS DSLR and series of EF lenses to uniquely capture their particular stories. Dennis’ camera of choice was the EOS 5D Mark II, while Walker and her director of photography Aaron Phillips used an EOS 7D DSLR.

Hell and Back Again tells the story of a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant’s battle with post-traumatic stress disorder after his return from Afghanistan. The film combines combat footage shot by Dennis with intimate scenes of the soldier’s physical and emotional difficulties as he tries to readjust to everyday married life as a civilian in North Carolina. Prior to shooting the film, Dennis spent several years as a photojournalist covering both Iraq and Afghanistan with Canon DSLR cameras. An early adopter of the HD capabilities of the EOS 5D Mark II, Dennis built a stabilization rig for the camera that enabled him to shoot run-and-gun video while embedded with Echo Company 28 of the 2nd Marine Division in Southern Afghanistan.

“I have always been interested in how I could advance documentary cinematography so that it was closer to the methods and look of both still-photojournalism and narrative cinematography,” Dennis explained. “I was deeply moved by past war photographers, especially those from the Vietnam era. I wanted to borrow from the syntax of photojournalism, and then mold and shape it with cinematic HD to convey the emotional power of still images to give audiences a very direct, immersive feeling of what it’s like to go to war and then come home from it. Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II allowed me to do that, with extremely high-quality lenses and a small single-person set-up that enabled me to get into various situations ranging from combat zones to the home of an injured soldier. This type of visual medium helped me get into that person’s mind, and was very different from a traditional documentary look and feel.”

Technology and Trust
Upon returning to the U.S., Dennis rebuilt his EOS 5D Mark II camera-stabilization rig to be even smaller and less intrusive for capturing cinema vérité footage of the everyday lives of the sergeant and his wife. Shooting extensively in interior locations, Dennis had special praise for the low-light capabilities of the Canon 5D Mark II’s 21.1-megapixel 36mm x 24 mm full-frame Canon CMOS sensor, and for the Canon EF series lenses he used.

“The 5D Mark II’s sensor is incredible, I was pushing the limits of what’s possible with its low-light capabilities,” Dennis stated. “You can shoot at extremely high ISOs and still have a relatively clean image. I also used really nice Canon lenses, an EF 35mm f/1.4 and an EF 50mm f/1.2. Those L Series lenses allowed me to open it all the way up to f/1.2 in extreme low-light, push the ISOs quite high, and still get this incredible image without having to use any external lights. They gave me a shallow depth of field for conveying a lot of the emotions of the central character. In Afghanistan I primarily used an EF 24-70mm f/2.8, which gave me the diversity necessary to get wide and tight shots, without having to fumble and change lenses when there is a lot of dust and action going on. The EOS 5D Mark II and its EF lenses allowed me to work as one person with one rig and shoot an entire film.”

Equipment aside, Dennis hastened to mention another essential element of his documentary technique that goes beyond using a small camera with no intimidating movie lights. That element is trust.

“I think it’s really also about having that level of trust with your subjects, where they are willing to open up to you and let you capture something that is very personal and raw,” he noted.

Visual Haiku
Trust was also key to director Lucy Walker and DP Aaron Phillips’ interviews of Japanese earthquake and flood survivors in The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom. Touring areas devastated by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake by car and on foot, Walker, Phillips, and their driver/translator carried their Canon EOS 7D cameras and minimal gear in backpacks, and were always careful to tell their interview subjects that they were filming video footage and not just taking still pictures.

“It was important for people to understand that we were shooting video, because you want them to be ‘on-board’ with what we were doing,” Walker said. “And even though they knew we were filming, the compact size of the Canon 7D and its familiar stills-camera appearance helped avoid any ‘intimidation’ factor. They felt comfortable, and you always want the scene to be about the people you’re filming – candid, honest, and emotional – and not about the crew and the equipment. The EOS 7D was absolutely super for us and we never really considered an alternative.”

“The Canon EOS 7D was liberating,” Phillips agreed. “I don’t think people would have been as receptive to us if we had a larger, traditional-format documentary camera. I think we would have been booted from many locations if we had a crew with boom poles and lights. The EOS 7D made us much more ‘human’ and sensitive to the situation.”

Walker and Philips shot interviews with survivors in the areas hardest hit by the disaster, juxtaposing that footage – and news video of the tsunami – with scenes showing the beginning of cherry blossom season, a cherished annual tradition in Japan. As the film’s website notes, The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom is “a stunning visual haiku about the ephemeral nature of life and the healing power of Japan’s most beloved flower.”

A Cinematic Look
Walker and Phillips found that the 18-megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor in the Canon EOS 7D digital SLR camera was particularly well-suited not only for photographing the beauty of nature in bright outdoor settings, but also for shooting intimate, emotional indoor interviews in subdued lighting. “To have the option to shoot with no light and still get a gorgeous image was important,” Phillips related.

Lenses used for filming The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom included a combination of Canon EF series models. “We used all Canon lenses, including Canon L-Series zooms: the EF 16-35mm f/2.8, the 24-70mm f/2.8, and the 70-200mm f/2.8,” he said. “We also used a Canon Extender EF 2x and did a little work with 24mm and 45mm Canon tilt-shift lenses.”

Crafting beautiful images for a documentary is as appropriate as it is for any other kind of film, Walker believes. There’s no reason why a documentary has to have a traditional “documentary” look. “People often think of documentaries as being poorly shot and low quality, but I like to think of documentaries as being potentially very beautiful,” Walker explained. “Just because it’s depicting real life doesn’t mean that it’s ugly. Aaron is the kind of cinematographer who can bring artistry to spontaneity, even when I am demanding that we move fast. I believe you should be able to deliver results that stand up to a big-screen cinematic blow-up and look absolutely stunning.”

Both filmmakers believe that this is a golden age for documentary production, due not only to the sophistication of cameras such as the Canon EOS 7D digital SLR, but also due to the elimination of the cost of film and processing made possible by digital recording and editing.

“The decreased cost is a huge advantage,” Walker stated. “You have the flexibility to shoot, experiment, and explore. We were translating Japanese as we went, which slowed the interviews, but we didn’t have to cut. This does make it easy to shoot too much content and get into trouble in post, but we didn’t. We had 46 hours of footage, which would have been totally unaffordable in film, but for us it was the absolute right amount to shoot, and a fabulous freedom. Now it is easier than ever to sculpt stories from scratch, and I credit the new digital tools of non-linear editing and affordable, cinematic cameras such as the Canon EOS 7D digital SLR as the reason why it’s such an exciting time to be a documentary filmmaker.”
